Eight peace-seeking tribal elders shot dead by jihadists in Pakistan

The jihadists register their disapproval of a ceasefire. "Eight peace-seeking tribal elders shot dead in Pakistan," by Allegra Stratton in the Guardian Unlimited (thanks to Block Ness):

Eight tribal leaders attempting to broker a ceasefire in Pakistan's dangerous north-west province have been shot dead by suspected Islamic militants in eight separate killings.

The assassinations began late on Sunday night and continued into the early hours of Monday morning, according to a statement from a security official and the military.

The eight tribal leaders were scheduled to meet each other on Monday in Wana to discuss plans to achieve peace between between security forces and insurgents.

All the attacks happened in South Waziristan, a mountainous region close to Afghanistan where al-Qaida and Taliban militants are known to operate. The suspected insurgents killed three of the men in a market in Wana, the region's main town, while the other five were killed in attacks on their homes, the security official said.

Pakistan's security forces have fought intense battles with militants in South Waziristan. Although the government has encouraged moderate tribal elders to push for a ceasefire in the region, there has been little sign of success.

Also today, a suicide attacker detonated a bomb near a guesthouse occupied by military officers, wounding one person....

Is there no way the tribal areas can be cordoned off, allowing no one to get in or out? If Pakistan can't maintain order in these areas then how can it claim sovereignty?

There's a reason why Pakistan doesn't deal with its lawless north-west province: There's no will to deal with it. Too many people in the government sympathize with the Taliban and their supporters, and those in Musharraf's government that would like to take strong action to restore government control in the area, don't know who in the administration or army can be trusted to support firm action in the area.

Musharraf himself is a likeable enough character, but he is a weak leader, who seems incapable of making a decisive decision about anything. His recent State of emergency was a complete flop, and he soon backed down from taking a decisive stand against the Talibam controled areas of Pakistan.

Sad to say, but Pakistan needs a cold-blooded tyrant as its leader, someone who can terrorize the terrorist. In short, it needs a Sadaam Hussein.

Nothing else seems to work in an Islamic society. It has to be an Islamic tyrany or a secular tryany, but it has to be a tyrany.

No peace, just pieces.

Sounds like Iraq. Maybe the Phashtoons are getting sick of thair Arab 'guests'.

We need to defund Pakistain. We get nothing for our aid. Then one of the generals might take the bounty on Bin Laden.

No surprise here. Jihadi justice is sham justice.

The day after 9/11, the whole Afghan Pakistan border - all those mountains, caves and hiding places should have been bombed until they were smooth as a pool table.

Must disagree, Rational.

Pak's State of Emergency was a flop only in the eyes of the western media. Days after imposing the emergency rule, Musharraf pulled troops from border with India to redeploy in NWFP (early Nov). While the world was busy wringing their right hands, tossing barbs at Musharraf, the Pak Prez was effectively using his military left hand. Presto...

Under pummeling from aircraft and Pak military once they arrived in the region? Most SWAT/S. Waziristan locations known to be Taliban and AQ strongholds. Notable bigwigs in their crosshairs? Baitullah (new Taliban org leader), Maulana Fazlur Rahman (JUI/MMA). Reports of Bin Laden's Black Guard security head honcho's capture have arisen just in the past 24 hours. And who do you think got them? Sure wasn't tribal leaders, NATO or US forces.

There is quite a bit of house cleaning with heavy artillery going on... you just won't find it in the western media. Goes against their "hate Bush", "depose Musharraf" agenda.

Try the The Daily Times, or the news briefs at DAWN and the PakTribune as just a few of the many alternative sources available. The western media can't multitask, and remains fixated on the latest BS dripping from CIC wannabees only.

Since Pakistan won't let us follw the Taliban into Pakiland, we need to just seal the Afghani border and let them kill each other.

And as Ruebacca suggested, cut off the aid, before it's turned against us (if it hasn't been already).

Re: Eight peace-seeking tribal elders shot dead by jihadists in Pakistan

Today someone told me she heard a memorable line in a recently seen movie. She said a mobster was talking to another mobster about the dangers associated with the profession. He said: "Life is like a chicken-coop. It's short and it's shitty".

I know I feel better when I realize just how close this nuke-armed dumphole is to being ruled by savages.

And with nearby Iran seemingly being allowed to assume the same path? Cool, my nights will be calm and unfettered by worry.

It sounds like we need to give them some ICBM's. That should win their hearts and minds, and make them become democracy-loving peaceniks.

One defination of Islam----Kill any pain in the fanny peace-seeking tribal elders or anyone else remotely interested in peace so we wont be interrupted in our practice of our death cult.

If necessary, hunt them down and kill them in their homes before they get a chance to meet and discuss any plans.

Islam---Highest reading on the barf meter!

Report: One in Three in Arab World Illiterate!

Get in line, Finkelswine & Chompsky: there is always another useful idiot for the Sowdi payroll:

Andy Worthington, author of 'The Guantánamo Files', states that “it appears that none of the Saudis just released was involved with al-Qaeda or the 9/11 attacks” and concludes that they were footsoldiers, missionaries and humanitarian aid workers.”

It seems that people here are agreeing with the culturist position that diversity exists, Islam doesn't seek to morph into a progressive democratic mode, and that blood and resources spent on this endeavor are largely - sadly - wasted.

Now, can we get in there and remove or dismantle the nukes? Can we do it swiftly enough that they don't have time to retaliate? While we are in the neighborhood going North and capturing OBL would be great. But after that we should split, withdraw funds and let them create their own paradise on their own. We need action, but winning the war of values with words ain't resulting in enlightenment.

"Eight peace-seeking tribal elders shot dead in Pakistan"

Are they the moderates because they didn't chop peoples' heads off? Maybe Ibrahim Hooper could explain this one....

By the way, where is Hooper? He is quiet as usual. Unless Israel is there somewhere, in order to blame.

...once again Islam shows it is nothing more than a death cult....

Ban Muslim Immigration....Muslim immigration is pointless and harmful to the host country...

Ridiculously naive of them(the tribal elders)
They should have hunted them down and killed them first.
