A global movement of these folks, and we might be getting somewhere. Taslima Nasreen Update: "'Secular' Muslims want Taslima back in Kolkata," from IANS (thanks to lgn):
Kolkata: A section of secular Muslims on Monday spearheaded a move to bring controversial Bangladeshi writer Taslima Nasreen back to the city from where she was shunted out by West Bengal's ruling communists following street riots late last year.Ostensibly for her own security, Taslima Nasreen has been kept virtually in seclusion by the central government at a 'safe house' somewhere in New Delhi.
The Dharmamukto Manabbadi Mancha (DMM) (Secular Humanist Forum), an organization of "secular" Muslims, Monday demanded that Taslima be allowed to return to the city.
"Taslima should not be kept under house arrest like now. She should get back her normal life and immediately allowed to return to Kolkata," said Giyasuddin, president, DMM. The meeting was attended by eminent writer Mahasweta Devi.
"A wrong campaign is doing the rounds. Everywhere it is being circulated that the Muslims want her out of the city. But those who took part in the street riots on Nov 21 that triggered her ouster from the city were hired rowdies. Not every Muslim locality of Kolkata had taken to the streets," he said.
"It is an insult to the Muslim society when it is said that the Muslims want her out of Kolkata or India. Some self-declared representatives of the Muslims should not have the last word," he said.
"Maulana Bukhari, the imam of Delhi's Jama Masjid, had gone to Nandigram as an envoy of the West Bengal chief minister, but he was rejected by the Muslims of Nandigram. Imams alone do not represent the Muslims," Giyasuddin said.
"We also demand that besides adequate security arrangements for her, she should also be allowed to visit the Kolkata Book Fair beginning Jan 30 and action taken against those clerics who issued a fatwa (decree) to kill her," Giyasuddin said.
It's a start.

On the other hand, maybe it is just an excuse to get her back into firing range.
"Secular" muslims wouldn't try to deceive anybody now would they?
IMHO secular muslims are akin to the ether of early 20th century physics: invisible, immeasurable and virtually impossible to prove their presence. Nought but a theoretical construct in the mind of western man.
If you go by polls, they are supposed to make up the majority of muslims but for all of their value in the struggle for peace they may as well be invisible. However, polls expect truth in the answers and no Muslim would try to deceive a poll would they?
Failure to control or remove jihadistic violence and failure to take any effective action to change the way Islam is taught in most madrassas anywhere makes all Muslims culpable in the eyes of a slowly increasing many.
If ever the west reaches the state of saying: "if you are not for us then you are against us" it will only lie at the feet of these invisible beings.

How does the west support the people in the Muslim world who are not strangers to reason? I'm not throwing out a complaint but wondering what people here think. I don't know. However, these kind of people will be the ones to tame the Imams and the endless host of nutters ruining Muslim societies, if anyone can. Outside forces can only do so much.

Of course we should support "moderate muslims" to the hilt but not with cash or weapons but moral support only.
However, to actually expect some value from this invisible and intangible force is naive in the extreme IMHO. Muslims have had 1450 years to see the light and remove nonviolence from their doctrines and that is without the presence of the "great satan", Israel and recent western histiory to use a banner to further project their violence and their revived hopes of the return of the caliphate. Thye have seen evidence of the value of christian virtues(the genuine ones) since 630 AD and it has had NO effect upon these ehtereal moderates ever.
Where were the moderate Muslims when one million Armenian christians were being exterminated in Turkey, when the Ibo were being massacred and the Anatolian Greeks exterminated? Where were the moderate Muslims demonstrating agsinst 9/11, London, Madrid, Nairobi, Bali etc>>>00?
Despiteb my scepticism, moderate Muslims should be given the chance to "step forward and act" but as most suicide bommbers seem to come from the families of such "moderate Muslims" how are we supposed to ensure that their children will have their views and not the view of their radical madrassa taecher?
Encourage, morally support and hope. But no money and no weapons and no expectations. We cannot count on these beings and we will probably have to solve this problem ourselves and make them accept the solution or we are doomed as is all mankind.

Quijybo,
Outside forces CAN only do so much. Look at Iraq. It took outsiders to get rid of Saddam. Let's see what the "moderates" do with the opportunity they've been given.
We have been asking the moderate Muslims to stand up and be counted. They haven't. The only time we hear from any self-proclaimed "moderates" is when those who have been killing others are themselves threatened.
Are moderates willing to renounce the message of the terrorists or not? When given the opportunity they speak in diplomatese and everything they say about Islam is couched with a but. The overriding rule is "thou shalt not speak ill of another Muslim". The terrorists can bomb a city and the "moderates" will find some way to avoid outright condemnation.
Either they are against the terrorists or they're not. If we have to accept that they can't speak out for fear of death then that means their support of us is worthless. Let them stand up to the Islamists and actively seek to quash them and the moderates will find a lot of support. Until then, don't hold your breath.

1. Unforeseen, difficult-to-locate, difficult-to-predict Muslims are plotting to use WMD of any kind they can to mass-murder as many people as possible anywhere in the world
+
2. Islam has taqiyya
=
ALL MUSLIMS ARE SUSPECT.

By a "section of secular Muslims" do they mean three?
Or four?
(And is that like a murder of crows or a crash of rhinos?)
