And once granted safe passage, they took along five children and ten other residents of the town as human shields.
"Islamic militants take schoolchildren hostage in Pakistan," from Indo-Asian News Service:
Islamabad, Jan 28 : A group of Islamic militants entered a high school in a town in Pakistan's North-West Frontier Province (NWFP) Monday and took around 300 children hostage, media reports said.
The insurgents stormed into the school to escape arrest after failing to abduct a government health official and his driver in the Battal Khel area of Bannu district, 200 km south of the NWFP capital Peshawar, the Aaj television channel reported.
From inside the school building the rebels exchanged fire with law enforcers, leaving three security personnel injured. One of the hostage-takers was also killed in the gunfight, but all the children remained safe.
The armed men released most of the students but held 25 of them and six teachers following hours of negotiations with the local religious leaders and administration.
The militants demanded safe passage with five schoolchildren and 10 local residents, assuring authorities that the hostages would be released once they crossed into the lawless tribal areas, the TV report said.
The hostage drama is the first of its nature in the ongoing conflict between Islamic extremists and the government of President Pervez Musharraf.
Pro-Taliban militants from the neighbouring restive tribal region bordering Afghanistan routinely launch raids in the Bannu district on security officials and state installations.

There it is again: "Islamic Militants", "Insurgents", when they are really the companions - Ṣahābi - of Mohammad, following the footsteps of the Perfect Man, Q 33:21.

Obviously these guys did a stupid thing, but they were trying to save their lives for heavens's sake.
This is what you call on-the run tactical moves: i am sure they have brought publicity to their cause and do not in any way seek to kill those children.
Reminds me of the Beslan story in which russian forces stormed a school to "free" children and killing 300 of them instead.
they knew the risks but they preferred to slaughter the kids but "not give in to terrorists": talk about ego overcoming rational thought.

Glad to see "Goldberg" excusing the hostage-taking of children.
Hope you don't have any kids, G.

From the article:

There's that quaint term "restive" again. Why "restive"? Why not "violent", "warring", "berserk", "psychotic", "deranged", "overzealous", "obsessed", or "belligerent"? There are so many words that are more accurate than "restive".
A jr. high school class at 3:25pm is restive. Taliban-ruled Waziristan is beserk, not restive.

You gotta love the media in canada now the the Human Rights Commissions can Charge and financially punish anyone that may have caused a possible offence to a Muslim somewhere on Earth that may live in canada today or in the future.
The report i heard on the radio was that SOME gunmen entered a School and held students but didn't make any demands , and after a short while the students were release as the gunmen surrendered.
WOW , now Canadains in the Media live in fear of reporting News from other Nations because the HRC is in bed with the Pro-Sharia Islamofascists like Dr.Elmasry and his pals at CAIR-Canada .

Islam's colour is that same.
Whether it is Pakistan or Beslan.
Whether it is the 7th century or the 21st century.

"At least 250 people - most of them students, teachers and parents - died, according to official reports and witnesses, after two large explosions set off pitched battles between heavily armed captors and Russian forces that continued for hours.
[More than 340 people, including 155 children, were killed in the violence that ended a hostage standoff with militants at a southern Russian school, a prosecutor said Saturday, according to the Associated Press."

Goldberg sez:
"Reminds me of the Beslan story in which russian forces stormed a school to "free" children and killing 300 of them instead.
....the fact is.....the Russians did not kill the captives...the Muslim terrorists did and they planned to do it....this is established by the fact that they wired the building with explosives and set them off when the Russians moved in to arrest them....it was premeditated murder....
"you must expect death when Muslims show up"
"and you cannot negotiate with them"
"

Once again, how many of the same people who are protesting the kidnapping of THEIR children applauded when it was done to non-Muslims? And how many of them would join in the violence in the event of the Wilders film's release?
Pro-Taliban militants from the neighbouring restive tribal region bordering Afghanistan routinely launch raids in the Bannu district on security officials and state installations.
And nothing has been done before now? How many pro-Talibans are in Bannu? Looks like they're reaping what they have sown. How do they like it?

exsgtbrown - great post!
goldberg - the rules of Western warfare deliberately forbid the targeting of civilians, in particular, children. Yes, armies in the West have accidently killed civilians - but in no case does the Western military plan to kill them.
This is a tactic of Al-Qaeda and it's fellow jihadists.

A stupid assessment gets ...
....the fact is.....the Russians did not kill the captives...the Muslim terrorists did and they planned to do it....this is established by the fact that they wired the building with explosives and set them off when the Russians moved in to arrest them....it was premeditated murder....
... an intelligent and factual response.
The Russians did not after all, take over the school in Beslan and shoot the children in the back when they tried to escape -- it was the muslim murderers who did that in the name of the mohammad because that is what islam teaches in the quaran.

So let me understand.. removing children from hostage takers is not *Freeing* them? Do u meant to imply they were with these moslem swine who invaded their school on their own free will?!
Yes u are a moslem so of course u expect us to give in to terrorists.
It never occurs to u and ur ilk that WE love our freedom more than u love ur Satan allashat.
And thus we are willing to sacrifice our selves and sometimes even our defenseless own in the pursuit of their liberation.
To give in is worse than death.
