Spencer's Islam Unveiled banned in Malaysia

IslamDitelanjangi.jpg
But you can still get it in Indonesia

Hey, what about The Politically Incorrect Guide to Islam (and the Crusades)? What about The Truth About Muhammad?

I don't believe that ideas that I oppose should be ignored or forcibly suppressed. I believe they should be met honestly and refuted. They don't agree in modern, moderate Malaysia.

"Ministry Bans 11 Books About Islam," from Bernama (thanks to Morgaan Sinclair):

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 29 (Bernama) -- The Internal Security Ministry has banned 11 books -- eight in English and three in Bahasa Malaysia -- about Islam whose contents have been found to be deviating from the teaching of the religion.

According to the ministry's Quran Publication Control and Text Division Secretary Che Din Yusoh, the ban order was gazetted on Jan 17 under Section 7(1) of the Printing Presses and Publications Act 1984.

The books banned are:

* Secrets Of The Koran: Revealing Insights Into Islam's Holy Book by Don Richardson (Regal Books From Gospel Light, Ventura, Calfornia, USA);

* Qur'an and Women Rereading the Secrets Text From Woman's Perspective by Amina Wadud (Oxford University Press, New York);

* The Two Faces Of Islam: Saudi Fundamentalism and It's Role in Terrorism by Stephen Schwartz (Anchor Books, New York);

* Woman In Islam by Margaret Speaker Yuan (Greenhaven Press Farmington Hills);

* Islam Unveiled: Disturbing Questions About The World's Fastest-Growing Faith by Robert Spencer (Encounter Books Califonia);

* What Makes Me A Muslim by Catherine M. Petrini (KidHaven Press Farmington Hills);

* The Importance Of Muhammad by Marilyn Tower Oliver (Lucent Books, Farmington Hills);

* Faiths Islam Worship, Festival and Ceremonies From Around The World by Trevor Barnes (Kingfisher, Massachusets);

* Amalan Kemurahan Rezeki by Lifa Karimah (Jasmin Enterprise);

* Rahsia Jalan Yang Lurus (Al-Mustaqim, Johor Bahru); and

* Islam & Pluralisme by Al-Mustaqeem Mahmood Radhi (Middle Eastern Gruaduate Centre, Damansara Kuala Lumpur).

So that copy you gave me will become a collector's item? I told you I would try to learn Bahasa Jawa, Bahasa Melayu, Bahasa this and Bahasa that, in order to read it. But apparently I chose the wrong version of the local conceivable bahasas, because I still haven't managed to understand more than the title -- and even that I'm not so sure about.

The people of Malaysia SHOULD read these banned books whether they agree with their contents or not. At the very least, you need to know what the government does not want you to know.

I also do not find it odd that the Qur'an is "supposed" to be read in Arabic. This means that about 80 percent of Muslims worldwide have not even read the holy book of Islam and are dependant on Mullahs or Imans to tell them what is in the Qur'an.

We had a period of time where the Bible was only written in Latin. Then along came the printing press.

Read the Qur'an.

Free your mind and the rest will follow.

What's banned?

Specifically: books connected Islam to terrorism and the maltreatment of women.

Or, you can do it but you CAN'T say that's what's going on.

Or, put another way, if you SAY that terrorism or the way women are treated is wrong, THAT is the real crime, because according to them it's just FINE and justified that all this happens.

'Nuther small point:

The major indication of immaturity in a child, a group, or a culture is that it cannot take criticism. It's touchy little ego is so fragile it can't have a damned conversation.

The book must be too close to the truth, otherwise it would have no scrutiny at all.

Another badge of honor for Mr. Spencer. One would think that Robert must be getting a bit top-heavy by now.

One title that caught my eye:

  • What Makes Me A Muslim by Catherine M. Petrini (KidHaven Press Farmington Hills)
  • Is that book a sarcastic or parody of why one would want to be a Muslim?

    As for Islam Unveiled, methinks it's the misleading cover, which suggests that it's a book on Quranic studies, rather than an analysis of the teachings of Islam that co-relate to the violent and intolerant underpinnings of Islam.

    tanstaafl

    The New Testament originally was written in Greek, the old testament in Hebrew. When Latin became a common language, it was used for reading the bible. Today, the bible is read in languages of all nations. On the other hands, today Qur’an is still kept as it was since Kalif Othman III; it’s in Quraysh. Like Sanskrit, Quraysh is totally a dead language no one uses today, not even Arabs. The Arabic Characters are still the same. When an Arab reads it, he pronounces each word perfectly, but he only produces musical tones with no meaning in Arabic, so you called it “odd,” but those who are depending on it for livelihood called it advantageous.

    Muslims all over the world can tell you this verse says this, and that verse says that, but none could speak or read Quraysh.

    I must admit that the prayers I used to hear five times a day blaring on loud speaks through out their land sounded beautiful and musical—of course, it’s annoying at 5 a.m. in the morning when I had to be kept awake until it was over.

    If you never heard it before, rest assured, they are coming to your neighborhood. I am done with it, but it could be a nice change for most Americans.

    By the way, if you have lived among them, you would know that there is not a single westerner who could sing like the Arab and Indian singers; they have the voice indeed emanates from their strong diaphragms.

    Pre-Islamic Al Arab al Arabia encompassed the land extended the entire Middle-East, excluding Isreal and Persia. Al Arab al Arabia was a superpower; they were the Babylonians and Assyrians. Though the Romans sacked Jerusalem in 70 A.D., the Jewish refugees under Arab auspicious sent the Romans home crying like a baby.

    Better for the west that Qur’an remains in Quraysh, lest they be your over lord.

    ans...a whacko with a gun...

    Posted by: exsgtbrown [TypeKey Profile Page] at January 30, 2008 3:27 PM

    ...Islam is serious about mind control...Muslims do not want their "believers" to have any chance of "discovering the truth about Islam" or of developing questions that would make the clerics uneasy....Muslim routinely round up "undesirable" books, burn whole libraries, jam radio and TV stations, and of course, as we know, try very hard not to allow their women go unescorted (lest they happen upon something "UnMuslim" to look at or read)....Islam is like "Big Brother" ...always watching, secret police, religious police, spies, informants, death squads....all ready to use upon those who dare to think there is something wrong in Islam.....

    Muslims are a parnoid lot...

    Posted by: exsgtbrown [TypeKey Profile Page] at January 30, 2008 3:44 PM

    hmm, i guess the men and women in malaysia won't have to wait in seperate lines to buy those books afterall.

    "Islam Unveiled"

    Maybe they took offense to the word "Unveiled" and they think that you want to unveil their womenfolk; which if forbidden, you know.

    Posted by: champ [TypeKey Profile Page] at January 30, 2008 6:07 PM

    I strong suggest those who can, and desire to, go and purchase a copy of "Islam Unveiled". Mine is a first edition, my hope would be to see it go into it's seventh edition now.

    Thank you Malaysia.

    Thank you Robert for writing the book.

    do the people of malasya have internet access where they could try to buy this covertly or can someone make photo copies with permission of course from the author, and drop leaflets over heavily populated areas like they used to do in ww2?

    Argh. Blasted browser ate my post. I'm not gonna retype everything but here are my key points:

    1. Malaysia is a multiracial, multireligious country, secular by Constitutional fiat. How well we adhere to the Constitution (supposed to be the supreme law of the land but tell that to the Shariah nuts, right?) is a different story. I myself am conservative evangelical Christian (Anglican) and Chinese by descent.

    2. People are people anywhere. Bureaucrats likewise. Being a film censor has got to be the best job - you get to watch all the latest films uncut for free AND deny others that same privilege. Some tightass mid-level drone probably made the decision based on a 'by the book' approach. No need to project sinister-ness when stupidity and stubborn reactionism fills the bill, eh?

    3. Politics is politics also. The govt intends to remain in power indefinitely, so controlling Islam, of which there is an officially sanction version, is important.

    4. Censorship is stupid, and the government only pays lip service to it. If you have access to the Internet (preferably broadband, but we're woefully lacking in that), then, well, no censorship there. Coming back to films, piracy is rampant and you can get ANYTHING (well, black market economics, you know). I'm typing this from my office PC! (they don't filter the sites either)

    5. But I think, Robert, your translator was having fun with the title, unless you told him/her to do it. In which case, man, were you trying to kill me with laughter? Calling the book

    "Nudifying Islam: Subversive questions surrounding doctrines and traditions of the Muslim race/tribe"

    is somewhat different from

    "Islam Unveiled: Disturbing Questions About The World's Fastest-Growing Faith"

    won't you say? I couldn't stop laughing at the word picture the Indonesian version painted. I mean, you know, the connotation was that you were stripping a girl naked and, well, that doesn't fly in the culture here either. Sorta a double whammy.

    Love this site, btw. Keep up the good work.

    Posted by: gkong3 [TypeKey Profile Page] at January 31, 2008 12:10 AM

    gkong3:

    I had nothing to do with the Indonesian translation, and didn't know that was what it meant until you just told me.

    Just checking the Petrini book on Amazon, it seems to present a warm and fuzzy picture of Islam suitable for grade-school children. Interesting that even when one tries to make nice with the Muhammadans, one gets banned.

    "Nudifying Islam: Subversive questions surrounding doctrines and traditions of the Muslim race/tribe"
    - the title in Bahasa Melayu, as explained by someone in Malaysia in a posting above

    "Nudifying Islam" it is then.

    And perhaps, Mr. Robert Rose Selavy Spencer, you'd like in the francophone world to have that book of yours marketed under the seductive title "Islam Stripped Bare By Her Bachelors, Even."

    It can be arranged.
