Egypt: "Anyone who breaches the border will have their legs broken"

So said Egypt's Foreign Minister, in a nice display of brotherly love. And he also criticized Hamas, leading a Hamas op, Fawzi Barhum, to retort: "Rather than criticise the resistance one should provide aid to the resistance and to the Palestinian people, because it defends the entire Islamic nation." The entire Islamic nation? You mean, this "Palestinian" struggle has something to do with Islam, and isn't just a quarrel over land and nationalism? What are you, Barhum, some kind of Islamophobe?

"Egypt threatens to break the legs of Gaza infiltrators," from AFP (thanks to Anne Crockett):

CAIRO (AFP) — Egypt said on Thursday it would no longer tolerate Palestinians infiltrating the country from the Gaza Strip, and threatened to break the legs of anyone crossing the Rafah border illegally.

"Anyone who breaches the border will have their legs broken," Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Abul Gheit was quoted as saying by the official MENA news agency on public television overnight.

Hundreds of thousands of Palestinians living in the impoverished Gaza Strip, subjected to a punishing Israeli blockade, crossed freely into Egypt after Islamist militants from Hamas blew apart border barriers late last month.

Abul Gheit said Egypt had allowed the Palestinians to flood across the border for humanitarian reasons only.

He blamed Israel for the situation in Gaza, accusing the Jewish state of imposing collective punishment on the territory, home to 1.5 million Palestinians, in response to rocket attacks by militants.

Abul Gheit also reproached Hamas for firing rockets into Israel, describing the standoff as a "laughable caricature."

The minister said some rockets misfire and hit the Gaza Strip itself, wounding Palestinians and merely providing Israel with a pretext to attack.

Hamas spokesman Fawzi Barhum, responding to the remarks, said that "rather than criticise the resistance one should provide aid to the resistance and to the Palestinian people, because it defends the entire Islamic nation."

Threatening cruel and degrading punishment? Where is the UN when you need them?

Breaking legs... The Yishmaelites certainly know how to deal effectively with their own. We should learn from them.

Can I vote for that candidate? Posted by: Zeno [TypeKey Profile Page] at February 7, 2008 1:24 PM

Funny how policies change when the money turns out to be bad.

How can Israel impose a "punishing" blockade on Gaza, which also has a land frontier with Egypt, and a coast on international waters? Why isn't the Eygptian barrier "punishing"? If it's Israel doing the blockading, why did Hamas blow up the Eygptian barrier?

At last a law created by savages for savages in a language they all understand: abject brutality. How brilliant!

More thuggery from the middle east - big surprise.

Posted by: champ [TypeKey Profile Page] at February 7, 2008 1:40 PM

How DARE they protect their borders! Don't they know that only racists, xenophobes and hatemongers want their borders secure?

Why aren't La Raza, Mecha, and Lindsey Graham protesting?

Oh wait, protecting borders is wrong only when Gringos and Joooos do it. Never mind!

Imagine the global uproar that would result if the US government tried that at its borders with Canada and Mexico...

pythagores

The money I would pay to hear a candidate just say that.
Wouldn't it be nice if we could just bruise their legs a little? The illegals, that is.

Muslim brothers.

They know how to deal with each other...

With the possible exception of some EuroLeftists, it doesn't look like anyone wants the Sewage Surfers in their country anymore.

Let me get this straight: If Israel refuses to CONTINUE supplying electricity, fuel, humanitarian aid, etc, to a group of people dedicated to wiping it off the map, it is condemned.

However, it's perfectly alright for Egypt to build a wall and threaten to break the legs of anyone trying to come in and buy ... cigarettes, motorcycles, cell phones...

Isn't this a "punishing Egyptian blockade" ?

Lobbing missles at Jews is ok. But don't let the same people go on a shopping spree to purchase smokes!

Bigfoot,

One thing at a time. First they have to get Lou Dobbs off the air. They've been accusing him of "hate speech". La Raza is busy getting to CNN.

Unfortunately, we'd probably be the ones paying for their health care afterward. Bruise the leg and we'll probably discover a "knee injury" that must be treated and the illegal must be compensated for his "pain and suffering" and he'd probably end up on lifetime disability, courtesy of the American taxpayer.

Naah, they won't. But those same Egyptian guards horribly lynch black Africans from both Darfur and Southern Sudan who are desperately trying to reach Israel to escape Arab Holocaust.

Time to invest in a local Plaster and Gauze Producer.

It seems the "progressive" Egyptian Gangsters have progressed well beyond the Fingers to make a point.

Where is the Press when you need them to expose the cruelties the Palestinians suffer at the hands of Egypt? They afraid of making Israel look good by being seen breaking the Legs of Poor Palestinian Moms and Dads who just do not have enough? Expose the Myth of Islamic paternalism by doing the same thing as Israel?

Humpty Dumpty never had a chance to jump off the Wall. The Wall was knocked out from under under Him, while all the Kings Horses and all the Kings Men stood around and watched Palestinians make scrambled Eggs.

I know none of us like the idea of a Mohammedan president, but if it weren't for the law that requires the president to be born here, could we import and have Ahmed Abul Gheit as our president, and export to Egypt Bush, McCain, Obama and Clinton?

Gheit makes Tancredo look like an amnesty shill ;-)

One of the interesting things about war is that when it goes big time and countries start to thinking about their own survival. The whining of the palestinians will drop below the radar. The solution then will be very quick and forthcoming and certainly not to the benefit of the palestinians.

"Anyone who breaches the border will have their legs broken"

So what's next - a long walk off a short pier? Cement boots? A trip upstate in the trunk of a car?

I guess the Egyptians must "know some people".

Did the Egyptians have a "Godfather" marathon on TV?

..............................................

This statement is insane. Imagine a criminal gang, trying to do something especially henious, like murdering police officers, or assassinating public figures who stood up to them. Would you consider it nothing more than a "pretext" if the authorities went after them if they were poor shots and missed their targets? How about if they were truly inept and shot one of their own gang members?

Would this somehow change the intent of the perpetrators? I don't see how. Yet we accept statements like the one from Abul Gheit all the time regarding Israel.
