Virginia: Yemeni man yells that he has a bomb, forces evacuation of train

Apparently Basel Saleh Salem Kassem simply lost his temper, and began crying out that he had a bomb. Happens all the time. But whether knowingly or inadvertently, he served to strike terror into the hearts of the infidels on the train, in accord with the Qur'anic command: "Against them make ready your strength to the utmost of your power, including steeds of war, to strike terror into (the hearts of) the enemies, of Allah and your enemies..." (Qur'an 8:60)

"Bomb Threat Evacuates Hundreds From Train In Emporia," from WRIC Richmond (thanks to Mackie):

Reports of a bomb on an Amtrak train in Emporia forced hundreds of people onboard to evacuate.

A number of streets were shut down overnight around where the Amtrak train stopped in the middle of town. Hundreds of passengers on board the train bound from New York down to Florida were forced to evacuate after a man on board said he had a bomb.

The nearly 300 passengers are rushed off the train around 10:30 Saturday night and taken by bus to Greensville Elementry School. [...]

While the passengers were at the school, the State Police Bomb Squad scoured the train. Investigators tell 8News a 23-year-old Yemeni man named Basel Saleh Salem Kassem got into an argument with another man on the train and then yelled that he had a bomb.

"Allegedly he was causing a disturbance on the train and the conductor attempted to move him to another part of the train, that's when he said he had a bomb and the bomb was in his bag" says Emporia Police Chief Bernard Richardson.

Around 2am the bomb squad determined the threat was a hoax. The Yemeni man was taken into custody by the FBI and is facing a felony charge of making a threat on a public conveyance. The hundreds of passengers were finally able to continue on their way.

Cair Cair where are you..this one is right up your alley..

The "argument" made him upset, he was being picked on... it's not his fault.

He's from Yemen, it was his accent, "darn" sounded like "bomb".

Dismiss the case, someone said he looks like a Arab.

They need to - as my mom always phrased it - put him under the jail.

Please tell me he's being sent back home to yemen..

I have lost my temper many times. Probably even more often back when I was 23, like Basel. But never once have I begun crying out that I have a bomb.

But I'm kind of an edge case, since I also never asked an airline attendant for a seatbelt extender when I didn't need one. Nor did I embed batteries and wires into a block of cheese that I put into my luggage. Nor did I buy hundreds of cellphones, then dissassemble them in my van keeping only the components that can be used to build remote detonation devices. Nor did I place dried feces into the food that I was selling. So, I guess I'm pretty atypical.

"Normal" behavior has apparently "evolved" while I wasn't paying attention, and left troglodytes like me behind.

Probably a dry run to see how long it takes emergency responders to get there so they can plan something like they do in Israel...explode a bomb then have another explode when the emergency workers get there.

No need to have him endure prison. Be charitable. And thrifty. Back to Yemen at once, in speeded up -- overnight if possible -- deportation hearings. And pass whatever legislation is necessary to strip citizenship from those who engage in any behavior, or any activity whatsoever, "tending to further the cause or causes" that are "favored by terrorists such as those in, but not limited to, Al Qaeda, Lashkar Jihad, Hamas, Hezbollah, Islamic Jihad, Al Aksa Martyrs' Brigade, Ansar al-Islam, and [here list one hundred other groups]."

Legislative drafting can be fun. Just do it.

Perhaps he grew upset when it was suggested that islam has a propensity towards violence?

Posted by: The Cool Ghoul [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 17, 2008 4:59 PM

He does not have very good people skills.

Posted by: Ruebacca [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 17, 2008 5:28 PM

Shhhhhhhh!

We must be very, very, quiet when we talk of things like this -- if we say anything too loud they might all get upset and we'll have a rage-fest or something!

After all, we wouldn't want our political leaders to get brown legs because of all the threats would we?

That would be dreadful -- we could tell the Dutch politicians from the Americans if we let that happen!

Once on a train in China a Yemeni man begged me to- as long as I seemed to be a traveling sort- go with him to Yemen. Truly, he assured me, I had seen nothing until I had seen Yemen.
I declined, but remained trapped on the same train with the importuning Yemeni until we reached the destination (Datong, if I recall aright, whose Buddhas have under Communism escaped the fate of Afghanistan's Buddhas under the Taliban).
I begin to feel about Yemenis on trains as Samuel Jackson does about snakes on planes, but perhaps I over-generalize.

Send him the bill for all this.

Posted by: Celsius [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 17, 2008 5:50 PM

Back to Yemen? No sir. Straight to Guantanamo for many, many hours of interrogation.

Posted by: No More Ham, Ed [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 17, 2008 5:55 PM

The threat is costly.

Yemen tends to let their prisoners slip away.

Guantanamo doesn't.

Give him a course in what it means to terrorize Americans.

Gitmo... till he can be traded for an infidel hostage somewhere.

Hey, what's the big deal? Doesn't everybody get "bombed" on St. Patrick's Day?

Posted by: Xero G [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 17, 2008 6:04 PM

"Around 2am the bomb squad determined the threat was a hoax."

Islam is a hoax - the biggest and best yet!

You left out that detail about whether or not you ever inserted a cell phone into your rectum. Nowwww, come on, it's okay to tell us - we promise to sit on such info (in a manner of speaking) should we receive it. ;-)

So did you, s_g, did you?

Posted by: Infidel Pride [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 17, 2008 6:23 PM

Lengthy interrogation - if yes GITMO, if no Deportation. In either case he should pay the costs involved with stopping the train. Passengers might also want to sue him personally for their trauma and inconvenience.

Posted by: MP [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 17, 2008 6:41 PM

This dirtbag is lucky that some of the passengers didn't get all punchy with him like those folks on the plane did with shoe-bomber, Richard Reid. Perhaps the next "bomber" will not be so lucky.

No, not that I remember.

Now I'm really starting to feel like a freak. All these behaviors are so normal and healthy, and yet I've done none of them.

Unfortunately, I gotta add a bit of balance on this:

They evacuated the train, just because of a bomb threat from a man who looked Middle Eastern? Why, that's nothing but Islamophobia!

I am with Hugh..

Back to Yemen and do not pass go.

Why must we waste tax dollars keeping him forever, because to keep a muslim is like a diamond...forever.

Perhaps it is time to bring back banishment.

why no mention in the article about DEPORTING this pig-filth ?

Seizure of all assets; entire family deported

They should have thrown him from the train while it was moving at a good clip.

Ding! Ding! Chatanooga, Richmond, Manassas, Jihadville! Watch the snow and ice and bombs on your way out!
Not exactly the Love Train.

Why are people from Yemen even given visa?

Posted by: Jerry M [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 17, 2008 9:58 PM

Well, there goes my last hope of fairly innocous travel. I have always loved trains, I grew up with the sound of steam and have enjoyed many travels by rail. After 9/11 I knew I wouldn't fly again and had taken the "Coast Starlight" often. Now, however, because of this incident which, by the way has nothing to do with Islam (sarc) we will see the type of screening at train stations we now endure at airports, and all due to the "Religion of Peace". If I had been on that train, and experienced this mans Islamic behavior believe me, he would not have been able to give any info to the authorities except maybe blood type, at least until he recovered a little more. Time to stop the madness and as I have said before.......

air burst, fues set at 1500 feet.

I wonder if the airline imams (I forget which airline it was) could have been charged under the same statute?

As a matter of fact, I wonder if a variety of weird anxiety-provoking airplane behaviors, security probes usually, could be busted that way.

"Yemeni man yells that he has a bomb, forces evacuation of train"

Well, airline food is pretty gross.

Some people just take a nibble then leave it, others go nuts and shout "BOMB BOMB".

Horses for courses really

Posted by: ewha1 [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 18, 2008 1:33 AM

Train food ain't much better. Why oh why did I think it was a plane?

Posted by: ewha1 [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 18, 2008 1:38 AM

Is there an attorney brave enough to make a stand and support the traumatized passengers in a civil class action suit against this man. He must be made an example of. Just as "fire" cannot be shouted in a theatre, this behavior must strongly be discouraged both legally and criminally. The window for sending such a message is still upon us.

I'll bet this all started in the lounge car. I was in an Amtrak lounge car once, and it's a very friendly little place, with strangers talking and everything. The trouble here most likely started when a U.S. American asked him where he was from...

Posted by: Bingo [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 18, 2008 2:16 AM

He wasn't Muslim at all. He was an Yemeni Jew involved in a little pre-Purim celebration. And it wasn't. "I have a bomb" it was L'CHAIM!

Posted by: Kemaste [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 18, 2008 2:23 AM

Ya'man - premature evacuation. Scusi.

Posted by: TallyP [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 18, 2008 2:25 AM

Yemeni tourists and immigrants to the USA need quadruple screening or just plain banning...their country is a breeding ground for Islamic extremism. This man from Yemen was just doing what comes naturally. He has bombs on his mind, just like his neighbors in the ME, the Saudis, Egyptians, Lebanese....UAE...hey wait a minute here...
Aren't these the "friendly ally" countries that the 9/11 "bombers" were from?
Yet our bomb government bombs on bombing...and bombs Iraq.
Grrrroannnnn.....

maybe this was the bomb he was referring to...

As I stated earlier, send his ass to Gitmo with plenty of sleepless nights and Dethklok playing at full blast for about a week until he "softens-up" and tells us about his Yemeni friends, both here in the CONUS and abroad.

Posted by: duh_swami [TypeKey Profile Page] at March 18, 2008 9:21 AM

The ACLU will want to put this guy Kassem to work right away, like maybe doing some of the ACLU's investigations of madrassas across America...

Yet another example of why we should stop all immigration of muslims. It doesn't seem to matter how they got here or where they came from, they all have the sense of entitlement and willingness to resort to violence of the smallest slight. Even the Somali "refugees" in Minneapolis cause problems wanting Sharia.

Deport them all and ban future immigration.
