An update on this story. "German Islamist plans Afghan suicide mission - media," from Reuters:
BERLIN (Reuters) - A radical German Islamist may be planning suicide attacks on German targets in Afghanistan, Focus magazine reported on its Web site on Thursday, and police confirmed they had issued warnings.
The news weekly said the 20-year-old, identified only as Eric B., was suspected of having links to three men arrested in the Sauerland region last year whom authorities believed planned attacks against U.S. installations in Germany.
A spokesman for the Federal Crime Office (BKA) confirmed the main points of the Focus report but declined to give details.
"We have warned our national and international partners, and possibly endangered institutions, of terrorist activities by two people from the German Islamist spectrum," the spokesman said.
Focus reported that as well as the German national there was also an Egyptian national involved.
Focus said the BKA sent warnings and a picture of Eric B., who was believed to be currently in Pakistan, to the German embassy in Kabul. His photo had also been posted at German organisations in Afghanistan.
Authorities were particularly concerned because the man spoke fluent German and might easily win his compatriots' confidence. His apparent targets were soldiers or policemen, but civilian organisations were also at risk, Focus said.
Germany has some 3,500 troops in Afghanistan as part of NATO's 47,000-strong mission and politicians here have debated in past weeks whether Berlin should give in to allies' demands and send in more troops to help fight the Taliban.
Unlike Spain and Britain, Germany has so far escaped a major Islamist attack at home but the publication last month of a video apparently showing Germany's first Muslim suicide bomber in Afghanistan, highlighted the threat.

I doubt if he considers himself to be a German. Or a radical. Or an islamist.
More like an observing Muslim. Fighting in the way of Allah.

If he is just another of the apparently ubiquitous "lone deranged individuals", and if Islam is the Religion of Peace, why was he drawn like so many other "lone deranged individuals" to Islam?
If Islam is incompatible with violence as the apologists claim, then why aren't these "lone deranged individuals" also drawn in equal numbers to Buddhism? Why aren't they mass murdering in similar numbers in the name of Jesus Christ? Why aren't they quoting from Hindu texts to justify their attacks? It's a statistical anomoly.
If Islam is just like other religions, why are these types of individuals attracted like moths to the nearest mosque, but not to synagogues?

The idea of a German convert to Islam frightens me especially, because when Germans go bad, they go really bad. Most Germans are very decent indeed, and make more of an effort than most other nationalities; but at the same time, they have a way of not only getting hold of the wrong end of a lot of sticks, but of going right down to the end of every stick they get hold of, with an earnestness and a thoroughness that the worst scoundrels elsewhere would not imagine. There is a special kind of horror associated with the country, from consensual cannibalism to the couple that jointly decided to let their six-year-old child starve to death and did so, to the woman who bore seven children, murdered them all after birth, and buried them in her own back garden. A country whose misfits can produce monstrosity on such a scale - monstrosity, one might say, without self-interest, monstrosity for its own sake - can well produce Islamists of a ferocity and thoroughness unknown even to our common or garden Muslim friends. Think of the horror of East Germany - a police state of thoroughness unknown even to other Communists - or of the murders of the RAF terrorists. A German Islamist terrorist would not be a podgy posturer like Adam Gadahn or a visibly lost soul like Walker Lindh, but a cool, efficient, quiet-spoken mass murderer with no conscience and a devastating ability to get things done. You have heard of Teutonic efficiency, and it is not just a myth. And unfortunately, thanks to the virtual collapse of Christianity in Germany, the number of spiritually rootless Germans is very large indeed.
