"Denounced." Not "renounced?" And for that matter, against whom: Libya? Against Islamic countries? Or at all?
"90 members of al-Qaeda-linked group freed from Libyan jail," from the Associated Press:
Libyan authorities released on Tuesday 90 members of an al-Qaeda-affiliate from a Tripoli prison after they denounced violence, a government-backed charity said.
The released were members of the Libyan Islamic Fighting Group which purportedly has links to the al-Qaeda terror network. The group has long been accused in Libya of plotting to overthrow the country's autocratic leader Moammar Gadhafi. ''All the released have denounced violence,'' Saleh Abdul-Salam, director of the Libyan charity organization, which mediated the release, said Tuesday. ''The foundation will help them in finding work and integrating better into society.''

TRIPOLI (AFP) - Libya has freed 90 members of the Libyan Islamic Fighting Group, an Islamist group that Al-Qaeda hailed as a new affiliate last November, the Kadhafi Foundation headed by the son of Libyan leader Moamer Kadhafi said on Tuesday.
"The dialogue opened with leaders of the Libyan Islamic Fighting Group .. has resulted in the release of 90 members, which represents one third of the membership of this group," said the foundation headed by Seif al-Islam Kadhafi.
The prisoners were paraded for photographers as they were released amid tight security from the Abu Salim prison in the Libyan capital Tripoli.
Al-Qaeda had announced in an audiotape posted on an Islamist website last November that the Libyan group had joined the jihadist network.
"The esteemed leaders of the Libyan Islamic Fighting Group have announced their allegiance to the Al-Qaeda network," Al-Qaeda number two Ayman al-Zawahiri said in the recording.
The Libyan group was the second Islamist organization in North Africa whose allegiance was claimed by Al-Qaeda after Algeria's Salafist Group for Preaching and Combat joined in January last year.

Oh, this is just swell. I'm sure these guys, presumably having previously misunderstood the dictates of Islam, will now go on to become productive members of society now that they have a better understanding of its true peacefulness.
I wonder if there's a way to track the subsequent careers of the releasees.

I wonder whether the Libyans were as generous with opponents of the regime during the 70's and 80's, when the Jamahiriya was an active supporter of terrorism, as in the Rome & Vienna bombings, the La Belle diskothek in Berlin bombings, Lockerbie, et al?

Denounced violence, eh ? Hey all you guys who call us JWers haters and bigots, are you aware of the fact that EVERY muslim makes his kid behead an animal and the family celebrates this day as special ? They don't do what, exactly ? Beheading animals (qurbani) is a basic requirement of being a muslim along with the sunnat. Every muslim must offer the qurbani to allah in order to qualify as a muslim and believe me, it is a big thing in a muslim household when their kid beheads his first animal. Learn some islamic language, visit muslim neighbourhoods (I do both) or else don't make stupid comments calling me a bigot. You can also get your knowledge second-hand, by going to sites such as these.

They make their kids do it around the time of the sunnat. This varies between 4-11 years olds. The one who beheads has a special place in islamic societies (some of them, due to contact with Infidel societies are not able to do so), and every mosque has a team of professional beheaders as a service for these "believers" who are incapable of performing the basic duty and therefore do it on their behalf. You might find the phrase "a team" strange and I must explain : They need about 4-5 guys to hold the animal down while the fifth recites the koranic verses necessary at qurbani and beheads. After that they have to gut and cut the animal up into pieces and for that 4-5 chaps are required as well, since the beheading guys have to behead another.
If you want to see this stuff firsthand (not recommended), you can visit some islamic areas in your country and you will see the parents making their kids do it. The kids are muslim, and they must do everything that uswa hasana, al insan, al kamil did, and they must learn to behead, first and foremost. Yes, they make their kids do it since it is basic requirement of being a muslim.
