The Psychology behind Suicide Bombings. By - Pierre Rehov, documentary filmmaker
On July 15, MSNBC's "Connected" program discussed the July 7th London attacks.
One of the guests was Pierre Rehov, a French filmmaker who has filmed six documentaries on the intifada by going undercover in the Palestinian areas.
Pierre's upcoming film, "Suicide Killers," is based on interviews that he conducted with the families of suicide bombers and would-be bombers in an attempt to find out why they do it. Pierre agreed to a request for a Q&A interview here about his work on the new film.
Q - What inspired you to produce "Suicide Killers," your seventh film?
A - I started working with victims of suicide attacks to make a film on PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) when I became fascinated with the personalities of those who had committed those crimes, as they were described again and again by their victims. Especially the fact that suicide bombers are all smiling one second before they blow themselves up.
Q - Why is this film especially important?
A - People don't understand the devastating culture behind this unbelievable phenomenon. My film is not politically correct because it addresses the real problem, showing the real face of Islam. It points the finger against a culture of hatred in which the uneducated are brainwashed to a level where their only solution in life becomes to kill themselves and kill others in the name of a God whose word, as transmitted by other men, has become their only certitude.
Q - What insights did you gain from making this film? What do you know that other experts do not know?
A - I came to the conclusion that we are facing a neurosis at the level of an entire civilization. Most neuroses have in common a dramatic event, generally linked to an unacceptable sexual behavior. In this case, we are talking of kids living all their lives in pure frustration, with no opportunity to experience sex, love, tenderness or even understanding from the opposite sex. The separation between men and women in Islam is absolute. So is contempt toward women, who are totally dominated by men. This leads to a situation of pure anxiety, in which normal behavior is not possible. It is no coincidence that suicide killers are mostly young men dominated subconsciously by an overwhelming libido that they not only cannot satisfy but are afraid of, as if it is the work of the devil.
Since Islam describes heaven as a place where everything on Earth will finally be allowed, and promises 72 virgins to those frustrated kids, killing others and killing themselves to reach this redemption becomes their only solution.
Q - What was it like to interview would-be suicide bombers, their families and survivors of suicide bombings?
A - It was a fascinating and a terrifying experience.
You are dealing with seemingly normal people with very nice manners who have their own logic, which to a certain extent can make sense since they are so convinced that what they say is true. It is like dealing with pure craziness, like interviewing people in an asylum, since what they say, is for them, the absolute truth. I hear a mother saying "Thank God, my son is dead." Her son had became a shaheed, a martyr, which for her was a greater source of pride than if he had became an engineer, a doctor or a winner of the Nobel Prize.
This system of values works completely backwards since their interpretation of Islam worships death much more than life. You are facing people whose only dream, only achievement goal is to fulfill what they believe to be their destiny, namely to be a Shaheed or the family of a shaheed.
They don't see the innocent being killed, they only see the impure that they have to destroy.
Q - ARE SUICIDE BOMBERS PRINCIPALLY MOTIVATED BY RELIGIOUS CONVICTIONS?
A - YES, IT IS THEIR ONLY CONVICTION. They don't act to gain a territory or to find freedom or even dignity. They only follow Allah, the supreme judge, and what He tells them to do.
Q - Describe the culture that manufactures suicide bombers.
A - Oppression, lack of freedom, brain washing, organized poverty, placing God in charge of daily life, total separation between men and women, forbidding sex, giving women no power whatsoever, and placing men in charge of family honor, which is mainly connected to their women's behavior.
Q - What socio-economic forces support the perpetuation of suicide bombings?
A - Muslim charity is usually a cover for supporting terrorist organizations. But one has also to look at countries like Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Iran, which are also supporting the same organizations through different networks. The ironic thing in the case of Palestinian suicide bombers is that most of the money comes through financial support from the Occidental world, donated to a culture that utterly hates and rejects the West (mainly symbolized by Israel).
Q - Is there a financial support network for the families of the suicide bombers? If so, who is paying them and how does that affect the decision?
A - There used to be a financial incentive in the days of Saddam Hussein ($25,000 per family) and Yasser Arafat (smaller amounts), but these days are gone. It is a mistake to believe that these families would sacrifice their children for money. Although, the children themselves who are very attached to their families, might find in this financial support another reason to become suicide bombers. It is like buying a life insurance policy and then committing suicide.
Q - You say that a suicide bomber is a 'stupid bomb and a smart bomb' simultaneously. Explain what you mean.
A - Unlike an electronic device, a suicide killer has until the last second the capacity to change his mind.
In reality, he is nothing but a platform representing interests which are not his, but he doesn't know it.
Q - How can we put an end to the madness of suicide bombings and terrorism in general?
A - Stop being politically correct and stop believing that this culture is a victim of ours. Radical Islamism today is nothing but a new form of Naziism.
Nobody was trying to justify or excuse Hitler in the 1930s. We had to defeat him in order to make peace one day with the German people.
Q - Are these men traveling outside their native areas in large numbers? Based on your research, would you predict that we are beginning to see a new wave of suicide bombings outside the Middle East?
A - Every successful terror attack is considered a victory by the radical Islamists. Everywhere Islam expands there is regional conflict. Right now, there are thousands of candidates for martyrdom lining up in training camps in Bosnia, Afghanistan and Pakistan.
Inside Europe, hundreds of illegal mosques are preparing the next step of brain washing to lost young men who cannot find a satisfying identity in the Occidental world. Israel is much more prepared for this than the rest of the world will ever be. Yes, there will be more suicide killings in Europe and the U.S.
Sadly, this is only the beginning.

a couple of remarks: first, several posts have noted how Islam seems pitched to 14-yr-old boys, but that sooner or later they have to grow up. It seems to me that is Islam's main problem -- so many of them never do grow up, they remain 14 yrs old, intellectually and emotionally, all their lives. Sort of like Peter Pan, only a couple of years older.
second, notice how the whiteness of the heavenly virgins is repeatedly emphasized; i.e. no African or Oriental virgins. One must wonder what Nigerian or Indonesian moslems make of this.

Mmmm. Oh, they become virgins again? So maybe the 72 virgins in paradise are it? Like only 72 total? So this answers the question of where they would get so many virgins. And the waiting in turn? Maybe he's talking about the hundreds of thousands of "martyrs" all waiting their turn. Ewwwe! Talk about messy. And the wine thing...your religion forbids it so your experience is maybe limited. Not all your Imams claim it is...drink too much and you'll wind up with a terrible headache in the morning. But hey, Muslim brothers, lets go out and drink a few, see if we can get "lucky". They'd probably say that a leader has different responsibilities. It is their "burden" to live a long and comfortable life amidst the temptations on earth in order to bring about the return of the caliphate. They'd probably say the terrorists are "the lucky ones".

you know whats funny...when you think about how long eternity is...I dont think 72 virgins would be enough. If the typical guy has sex with 20 people in their lifetime (just a figure I came up with.) that means in 4 lifetimes that would be 80 people. wow, eternity is more than 4 lifetimes and who wants to have sex with the same virgins every night. Plus sex gets boring if its so easy to have, where is the challenge...am I crazy? does not sound like heaven to me. Heaven to me would have the virgins, but that would be a small part of it. I want good swell, great golf, my family, and really good food. I dont think that is too much to ask.

Honest to God, this is really bizarre stuff.
Remembering Robert's point, in The Politically Incorrect Guide, that otherwise universal moral values do not necessarily carry over into Islam, I have to say that it looks like he was understating that.
What is really alien about this, and sad, is the sheer crassness, the lack of any exalted spiritual thought which might have the power that religions are supposed to have (and that the Karen Armstrongs of this world assure us Islam does have) to regenerate human nature.
Here is the "ideal" for which men are willing to die? Here is Islam's version of the otherwise universal religious insight that there are higher claims on us than the ones we might be most inclined to submit to?
And this, the un-spiritual crassness, together with the barbaric mission to conquer and control, used to be well recognized about Islam. For centuries of time it fooled almost no Westerner.
Today you will be accused of the most nefarious crime if you fail to fall into line and refuse to recognize what Islam is. Abandoning reason, turning away from the slightest objectivity, throwing open the gates of acceptance and treating every imaginable barbarity as a member in good standing of a world family of faiths, is now a principle that you transgress at your peril.
Peril of your life, if you speak out too much.
You might become some warrior of God's chance at his very own Salma Hayek.

I, too, have wondered why the allures of Paradise have not enticed the bearded holy ones (No, I don't mean ZZ Top.) to claim their virgins in a blaze of glory.
Could it be that these wise old men know that if you have 72 women, regardless of their sexual experience, in the same place at the same time keeping them quiet would be beyond the power of Allah himself? And how long would it be before these 72 damsels begin to look askance at the lazy lump who expects them to pour wine and peel grapes all day? Will the honored shaheed have to pick up his own socks and underwear? What happens when he gets bored with the whole thing and wants a change?

Islam thus gives free reign and divine sanction, even, to impulses that lead to decadence of self and society, to the loss of spiritual, psychological and political freedom. Western society, too, gives free reign to such impulses, but not divine sanction.
This Islamic doctrine is a perversion of what Augustine (I think) once said: provided you are truly, unselfishly loving (not deluded that you are loving), you can do whatever you want, because, to that extent your desires will be unselfish, compassionate, kind, etc.
Islam perverts this and makes it: provided you obey the Quran and Muhammad, your physical desires and lusts will be gratified in heaven. The Islamic view is a materialistic caricature of the Augustinian one. Islam is concerned with blind, even terrified, obedience to the despotic "Allah". Such obedience earns a reward of physical gratifications in heaven. Augustine is concerned not with blind obedience, but with love, thus with freedom, and how love will make it possible for one to do whatever one desires because one's desires will then be unselfish and wholesome. One will be free, yet in tune with the spirit.
Vladimir Solovyev was great on how to integrate pleasures into a Christian life. He wrote somewhere that one can divide things up into two categories: essentials, and secondary things. He then assigned the digit 1 to the essentials, and the digit 0 to the secondary things. Then he pointed out that if you put the 0 after the 1, you increase its value. In fact the more zeros you add, the larger grows the number. 1 becomes 10, or 100, or 1000000, etc. But if you put the 0s before the 1, you reduce the value of the number, which becomes .01, or .0001, or .0000001, getting smaller the more zeros, i.e., secondary things, you place first in your life.
Thus the more secondary things you put in first place in your life, the lower in value goes the number. But if one puts first things first -- love, knowledge, learning, kindness, etc., and puts the secondary things second, then the secondary things actually increase the value of life, rather than reducing it. A good tasting meal, or other sensual pleasures, diminish us only insofar as we favor them over the need to grow, evolve, love, learn. The digit 1 in the example signified for Solovyev integrity, wholeness, oneness, and the actions and qualities that increase one's integrity and wholeness. 0 signified things of no value in themselves, but only as secondary enhancements to a life of integrity that incarnates in matter and gives meaning to matter, which is, I suppose, the Christian way, the way of incarnation, not retreat. But if, instead, one makes the 0s of life primary, one more and more turns oneself into a 0, a slave to emptiness, indulgence, ease, escape, pleasure, addiction.
So how does one actually put the secondary things in their rightful second place? A whole lot easier said than done, but one key that some sages have offered is that one avoids seeking out the secondary things for their own sake. One seeks out only the primary things, and accepts the secondary things only insofar as they happen to come one's way and fit into a life devoted to the primary things. One doesn't actually seek out secondary things to indulge in them as ends in themselves. If one seeks them at all, one does so only if and when they provide a means to grow in the primary things like knowledge and love. But easier said than done.

I've wondered about that myself; if Islamic scholars have opined on it, it's much less talked-about. I've thought about these possibilities:
1. Some pretense of modesty prevents them from discussing the same subject regarding women (things like this cleric's portrayal of what awaits the men notwithstanding).
2. These guys don't know or care what women like anyway.
3. The woman's lack of rights in a relationship (often a misnomer) make all things sexual seem so lousy that an eternity of sex is hardly an incentive to wage jihad.
4. Promising an eternity of spectacular sex would detract from its status as a duty toward the husband on earth.
Still, from what I have read, the focus in primary Islamic literature is on the sensuality of the paradise that awaits men-- specifically, the male jihadist. There isn't nearly as much to go on from the Qur'an and ahadith as there is for men.

OK people - which great modern film-maker, still living, has the talent to make a satirical film - Virgins in Paradise? - that will heap upon this stuff the searing mockery that it so richly deserves?
Complete with a totally over-the-top faux-Arabian/ Oriental musical score.
Include the story of the original Assassins, and the guy who ran the outfit: he had a fake Paradise set up, well-staffed with delicious females, so his poor tools (drugged; allowed to wake in 'paradise'; drugged again and removed) thought they'd been given a pre-death vision of same, so as to increase their enthusiasm for suicide-murder missions.
Intercut excerpts from those horrid 'Palestinian' Arab music videos about paradisal virgins awaiting the suicide-murderers - 'death porn' I think someone here called them.

Supposed a woman was not in love enough with her husband in this life and would not like to take him again! And… how come that a woman accepts to share her husband with all this number of hoors?
Actually, we have to realize that the dwellers of Paradise are not going to be ruled by the same nature of passion that used to rule them in this life. This is such as
hatred and jealousy. They will have a totally different psychology from that
they used to have in this life. It is the special psychological nature of the people of Paradise, which Allah has described in the Qur'an in Surah 43, verse 7. This is when He said the meaning of:
*{And we shall remove from heir hearts any rancor}*
Even if the husband was not appreciated by his pious wife in this life, Allah is capable of changing his negative nature so to please her in Paradise. In the same way he changes her into the most beautiful woman - while she was so not in this life - just to please him.
As for the second half of your question about rewards given to men martyrs alone, this is a common misunderstanding. A masculine pronoun does not only refer to men in the Arabic language. There is a linguistic rule that exists in both Arabic and English that a masculine pronoun in case of referential ambiguity - that is when the referred to person is not identified - refers to both men and women. The martyr here refers to both he and she martyrs. May Allah make us among them.

I attended Catholic schools. Heaven was described to me to be blissfull because of the nearness of God. The only other reward mentioned was that truth would be revealed. I looked forward to the knowledge of the creation of the universe. What a contast to the Islamic whorehouse in the sky.

Exactly! Where do I sign up?! I would love to become a Muslim because I can hardly wait to see what allah has in store for women. Maybe allah allows the 'good girls' desk jobs so that they can sit down and rest their weary legs, while the 'not-so-good girls' have to stand on their feet all day as greeters into Sex Heaven and watch from a distance while 72 virgins ravage their husbands 24/7. Actually, there is no reason to assume that Jesus was celibate. There is no tradition of celibacy among the Jewish people. (However, there definitely IS a prohibition against debauchery, whether one is in heaven or not, which is where it differs markedly from Islam!)As a practicing Jew and a rabbi (religious teacher), it would have been expected of him to marry and have children. Just because there's no mention of a wife and children in any of the Gospels, some Christians have taken that absence as proof positive that he was celibate. I know this is a thorn in the side of some of my fellow Christians, but I don't quite understand it.

While Christian doctrine (correctly I believe) holds that Jesus was not married, his celibacy would not have been shocking to his fellow Jews. He was only 33 years old when crucified and many prominent Jews such as Yitzhak (Isaac) and Yakov were much older than that when they first married.
Also, celibacy was common for many Jews because of the Roman occupation and expectations of the Messiah. The Essenes were an almost completely celibate sect as were those like John the baptizer who had taken the Nazirite vows. Paul also wrote that he was a lifelong celibate and he had been a prominent Rabbi.

I hope I did give the impression that I support the notion that Christ was ever married. I consider it heresy to believe that he was married and may have had children, because Christs' "church" is his bride.

Sandra is a Jewish-background believer. She has a classic evangelical theology, BTW. But she writes of a shattering spiritual encounter, and I think we Gentile Christians need to hear her.
(Rationalists, non-Jews, non-Christians, PLEASE ignore the rest of this post - what I reproduce here is relevant to Jewish-Christian relations only).

Agony - and ecstasy. The divine eros. YHWH agonising over His people.
Doesn't sound to me like someone who's fallen out of love, finalised the divorce, gotten over it, and found someone better and different. He's still pursuing his FIRST love and has no intention of giving up - EVER.

Sandra argues that the call of Gentile believers, who through Yeshua belong to the God of Israel, is to love that God, and His people, passionately enough, consistently enough, that Jewish people may be able to see His glory and see that their own God really is at work in us.
Frankly, our record at that, over the past 1900 years (ever since Gentile believers became a majority in the 'church') has been dreadful. Jews have mainly experienced from us - from people who claimed to worship a Jew as Son of God, and His Mother as 'Mother of God' - a face of hatred, rejection, oppression and outright murder. Naturally, they have matched rejection with rejection.
In the context of the Third Jihad perhaps we Gentile Christians must ask this, first and foremost: that God will grant to us the strength NOT to betray the Jews; that this time around, instead, many of us (rather than a tiny, almost invisible minority) will be able to love Israel as God loves her.

The line, "Then (it seemed) the Father tore open his heart, and spoke one sentence: 'this is how I feel about Israel'," reminds me of Paul's anguish over his fellow Jews who could not/would not recognize in Jesus, the Messiah who had been foretold in the law and the prophets. Why should it be so? Paul concluded that a certain hardness had afflicted Israel so that grace could come to the Gentiles, who otherwise would have been left out, not grafted in to the true vine, but that in the end, "all Israel will be saved." Romans 11:26 whatever is meant by "all."
The emergence of Islam as the antithesis of Christianity some 6 centuries later could be seen as another consequence of Israel's rejection of Jesus as Messiah. Mohammad co-opted and mutated Jesus as presented by Christianity into a servant of his own perverse will to dominate and humiliate the Jews.

He would pursue his own twisted agenda, believing himself to be the righteous executioner of Allah's wrath against the Jews because they had rejected him as a false prophet, when the REAL issue was rejection of Jesus as the true prophet, priest, and king, which is EXACTLY the same mistake that Mohammad made, but his blindness was even more pronounced.
Now he knows better, but does the knowledge fill him with joy?

Maybe if these guys would relax and have a glass of wine and hold a woman's hand here on Earth now and then, they wouldn't be so keen on blowing themselves to Kingdom Come along with the decadent infidels, who are clearly enjoying themselves more. Seems these macho Muslim guys are actually so insecure about their manhood that they can only deal with women as fantasy sex toys, or as inferior creatures (or little girls) - never as equals. Insecurity could explain why they're so touchy about insults to their religion too.
While using the "hoori" could I suppose be defended as morally OK since they're just a fantasy, meanwhile the subjugation of living women and girls in Islam continues every day; here's the latest protege of Muhammad in Yemen; unemployed man marrying off his 8 year old daughter to another unemployed guy under threats from him and his gang:
