UK: Teenage convert to Islam misunderstands his new religion, faces terror charges for explosives

Andrew Ibrahim Update: "Teenager facing terrorism charges," from the BBC (thanks to Davida):

A 19-year-old Bristol man has been charged with terrorist offences relating to explosive substances.

Andrew Ibrahim, of Westbury-on-Trym, was arrested on 17 April. Three controlled explosions were later carried out at his flat.

He has been charged with possession of an explosive substance, the intention to commit terrorism and the possession of articles for terrorist purposes.

He will appear at City of Westminster Magistrates' Court on Wednesday.

The student is a son of an NHS consultant and was educated at some of Bristol's top independent schools.

Speaking ahead of his appearance in the London court, Mr Ibrahim's family spoke of their "shock" at the charges.

In a statement, his relatives said: "As a family we have been shocked and deeply distressed by the events of the past fortnight.

"We are still coming to terms with the news and trying to deal with this shock as a family. We therefore would ask that the media respect our privacy at this extremely difficult time."...

ACC Roberts thanked the local Muslim community for its assistance.

Mr Ibrahim, who moved to the area just weeks prior to his arrest, is understood to have recently converted to Islam.

He was arrested after covert inquiries prompted by an intelligence tip-off from within the city's Muslim community....

That is good, at least. Now what are they doing to prevent converts like him imbibing jihadism? What's that? The question itself is "Islamophobic"? Great. All right, then: what are British authorities doing to prevent people from imbibing jihadism? Nothing, you say? Trusting the self-proclaimed "moderate" Muslim leaders, who are essentially doing nothing? Got it!

Dang it, doesn't this kid watch the news? Islam is peace, everyone knows that. How on earth could he ever confuse the teachings of the prophet (peace be upon blah blah blah) with violence? Must be a very rare case.

Another tragic misunderstanding Islamophobe.

God, you're hard to please. It's a deliberate strategy. You don't think all the authorities are dopes, do you? Just give it a little more time. Any day now, the results will be obvious.

I thought I read somewhere his father was Egyptian and his mother English. If so he was not quite a full convert being half way there already.

_this certainly runs counter to the claims that young Muslim extremists are poorly educated, have been offered no opportunities from host nations and thus hang around slum areas eager to find something to do which usually involves striking out violently at the indigenous population.

Deporting all these Moslims, where are you going to deport this UK youth too.
It is about impossible, if you know from which country they came.
The Netherlands have send some back in a plane, escorted with the military or police.
They handcuffed them, they had to drag them in the plane, once in a seat they were cuffed to the chairs.
One man treatened to throw his baby on the cement.
Can you imagine sending thousands back, not to discuss, if you are talking about, sending millions back.

He'll be out of jail before you know it.

Yes. Yes, I can.

If deportation of muslims is not undertaken with all vigor, our lands will look like Persia, Egypt, Arabia, Pakistan, Kashmir, Sudan, Maldives, Indonesia, or any other country that has been taken over by Islam. Terrible oppression and darkness.

And every single soul that is taken because of Islam will be our burden. We will be personally responsible for every babe that dies at the hands of Islam. Every shriek and cry of every soul taken will be ours to cherish.

That is our legacy to this point. Pathetic and sickly. Because we are too weak to send them away let alone wage war upon them.

Sad.

And, as usual, the family are protesting total ignorance of what their family member was up to - they're shocked! shocked!:

QUOTE "Speaking ahead of his appearance in the London court, Mr Ibrahim's family spoke of their "shock" at the charges.

"In a statement, his relatives said: "As a family we have been shocked and deeply distressed by the events of the past fortnight.

Oh yeaaah?

Given that this has been the standard response of every single Muslim family in Infidel lands, when their little jihadis are caught red-handed, I am afraid I am not exactly inclined to believe them.

Not without knowing a lot more about them - whether the mother was a convert to Islam, whether father was a practising Muslim and how much, what mosque they attended and how often, whether the 'independent school' was a Muslim or a non-Muslim school and who taught there, and how much contact young Ibrahim Jnr had with his dad (or with any other possible male relatives on his father's side).

Indeed, the reporter doesn't even explain whether the term 'family' just means 'dad, [separated] mum and younger brother', or whether it includes, also, "Muslim dad and a whole bunch of Muslim uncle/s and male cousin/s on the father's side".

I hope the British authorities are going through Ibrahim Snr's entire CV and background with a fine-tooth comb...keeping an eye open, especially, for any possible Muslim Brotherhood connections.

The boy being a convert can mean one of two things.

1) His dad is a Muslim, but his mom raised him as a Christian, at least nominally. His name is Andrew, after all.

2) His father could be an Egyptian Copt as the name Ibrahim can be either Muslim or Coptic (notice I did not say Christian, as Coptic is merely a racial and cultural designation used erroneously as a religious affiliation--- Since Copts, even atheists and non-religious ones are still copts). His father could be one of those Copts who marry white women and forget everything about his former life in Egypt…. It follows that he told the boy nothing about the history of Coptic persecution and the reality of how his relatives in Egypt live. Just a possibility. I could confirm it or deny it if I have the first name of the father.

havemercy

according to an earlier news report, the father's name is Nassif.

Posted by: dumbledoresarmy [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 29, 2008 11:10 PM

It turned out that his father is most likely a Copt as his first and last names (Nassif & Ibrahim) are neutral names that could be given to either groups, but in combination they are more suggestive of a Coptic man. Apparently, he was not raised by his father and he grew up with his English mother and her living lover. Seemingly, a typical Britt from a broken home growing up with an identity crisis… First, he was in the punk music counter-culture scene and then he moved to the other extreme, Islam. The sad thing is that his pre-Islam face looks like relatives of mine.
