Why Islamic reform is about as likely as an attack by men from Mars, part 65320: "Afghan teacher killed after speech condemning suicide bombings," from The Associated Press, May 14 (thanks to Jeffrey Imm):
KABUL, Afghanistan: A teacher was shot to death in northern Afghanistan after he gave a speech condemning suicide bombings, officials said Wednesday.Abdul Hadi criticized such attacks as un-Islamic and un-Afghan during a speech Tuesday in the Archi district of Kunduz province, said Khair Mohammad Subat, the provincial education department director.
Hadi spoke at a gathering of about 700 people, including the Kunduz governor, and was on his way home when he was killed, Subat said....

A discussion of the topic would take too much time between beheadings, stonings and the like..............

Can't those Islamophobes just leave people alone? And to quote Rodney King: "Can't we all just get along?"

Suffice it to say that it will be a long uphill struggle to moderate islam and it's adherents.

Sad irony; and the gunman was being more honest about Islam by following the example of his false prophet, Mo.

Seems there are two ways of discovering whether what Mohammed said was true. Suicide bomb (murder)in the name of Allah and book your ticket to 'Paradise'.
Or commit involuntary suicide (being murdered) by speaking against suicide bombing in the name of Allah.
That will moderate the moderates!

Along the same lines, the same AP story reported
"In central Logar province, meanwhile, education department director Kamaluddin Zadran said three girls schools have been set ablaze in the past three weeks."
This is depressing. Has our presence in Afghanistan since 2001 resulted in ANY progress toward modernizing this barbaric culture?

Then they murdered him. I guess that put him in his place...Now Allah has him in the dungeon, he's not talking un-Islamic anymore.

My guess is that progress in Afghanistan is an illusion. When we are present in large numbers, heavily armed, and facing down the mujahideen, there is an illusion of progress.
When the lights go out, so goes the illusion.

And I would not be too sure about the men from Mars.
The Catholic Church just said it was ok to believe in space aliens. I have a little problem with 'believe in', but if aliens are ok with the Church, they are ok with me. I can accept the idea of space aliens, and I can even welcome the reality, if it is not harmful, but 'believe in'? That sounds too religious. I don't 'believe in, white people, black people, green people, planes, trains, or automobiles. I might believe in Allah, God, or Jesus, but space aliens? What did they ever do that I should 'believe in' them? Believing in Jesus is faith...I put no faith in men from Mars, even if they invade, especially if they invade...

Eastview poses the question, "Has our presence in Afghanistan since 2001 resulted in ANY progress toward modernizing this barbaric culture?" I think in all honesty, I must answer no. I recall right after 911 when it was said that our involvement in Afghanistan would NOT involve nation-building, but would be a search and destroy mission like the British used to mount in the latter days of the Raj. We would find people involved in 9/11 and their allies, and kill or capture them. Almost immediately we did get involved in nation-building and immediately became bogged down in the morass that is tribal Afghanistan. Today Kharzai is little more than mayor of Kabul. Afghans will take what materil goods Uncle Stupid is willing to provide, destroy what they do not value, then scuttle back to the 9th century. Most of them truly want to be there, so in a perverse way democracy has sort of triumphed. The only benefit that we attain is using the failed state of Afghanistan as a lantern to attract jihadist moths, some of whom will end up dead. Perhaps better to do battle there than elsewhere as there remains very little to break.

Anyone familiar with the transformation of Japanese culture beginning in the late nineteenth century? Kevin Bacon, The Last Samurai ...
While the United States was growing up there were two hundred fifty years of Native American Indian massacres.
Imagine one Sunday morning you wonder why the McGuilicuties(?) didn't show up in town for church services. You and a couple of guys ride over to their cabin, ... the place is ransacked, and to find Joe and Sally and the kids all dead. Anyone ever see someone after being scalped? Imagine looking at three dead scalped kids ...
Two hundred fifty years with the Native Americans ..., what was the peoples solution? Patience ...?
Islamists started attacking Americans in the 1960's, hijacking and blowing up commercial airlines on a regular basis. I don't see any lessons to be learned. Nothing applicable.

So the man is shot to death in cold blood?
The Afghan government thinks this is perfectly acceptable?
Yet another proof that Islam is incompatible with American jurisprudence. Muslims need to choose one or the other. They can't have both.
Hugh suggested moving Muslims around in the Middle East and moving Christians to Lebanon.
Like it or not, the same might be required in the West. Move them out. Do we want Afghan norms of behavior to become ours? They make the "sinful" America that is portrayed in Hollywood movies more preferable.

If he said -"peaceful" suicide bombings are o.k.- he would have gotten a medal instead of a metal bullet.

No. These people don't want to change. They want to remain ignorant savages. We are wasting our resources and our people over there, and the sooner we get out, the better.

"We are wasting our resources and our people over there, and the sooner we get out, the better."
Sure, keep that defeatist attitude -- one barbaric incident does not sink the ship. Good work is being done there and our soldiers deserve every opportunity to complete their mission.
Leaving won't civilize them either -- it will embolden them; have you forgotten about this?

"Leaving won't civilize them either -- it will embolden them; have you forgotten about this?"
Does that require us to invest our blood and treasure in them?
If they're not civilized at this point in human history then there isn't much we can do to help them. The best thing to do is isolate THEM. Deny them access to our countries.
Remember this: no matter how "emboldened" they were after the Soviets pulled out, the people they trained could never have attacked the United States mainland without first gaining access. We let them in. It's time we learned from our mistakes.

Pretty naive to speak out and not be willing to fight back with the same kind of cunning and firepower as the declared jihadist maniacs.
This isn't a tennis match or debating society square off.
It is a war for sheer existence against retrograde, terroristic, homicidal madmen.
Stop the posturing silliness of empty condemnations and gird for seriousness demanded by survival.
