Keith Olbermann: anti-jihadists are the "equivalents of jihadists"

Recently Pamela Geller, Charles Johnson and Michelle Malkin pointed out that a new Dunkin' Donuts ad featured Rachael Ray wearing a Palestinian kaffiyeh.

What's wrong with that? People in the Middle East, including Arabic-speaking Christians, wore it long before the establishment of the State of Israel and the invention of the "Palestinian" nationality. But there is no doubt that it has become a symbol of the Palestinian jihad. Charles posts a piece explaining the kaffiyeh as a "symbol of resistance and solidarity with the Palestinian struggle." Michelle Malkin accordingly asks, "It’s just a scarf, the clueless keffiyeh-wearers scoff. Would they say the same of fashion designers who marketed modified Klan-style hoods in Burberry plaid as the next big thing?"

Dunkin' Donuts pulled the ad, causing the company to be named "Worst Persons in the World" by Keith Olbermann. In the course of his fulmination in the video above (thanks to the Constantinopolitan Irredentist), he says this:

They pulled the ad? Because of the possibility of misperception? By the right-wing equivalents of jihadists -- the people in this country who most closely share the mentalities of the terrorists. Who act the most like Middle Eastern nutjobs. Who rail against diversity, try to murder dissent, and care more about flags than about people. You know, the Michelle Malkins of the world....How about the rest of us boycott Dunkin' Donuts, for giving in to fascists like Michelle Malkin? And for giving weight to perhaps the most absurd idea the lunatic fringers have ever belched forth: that there are terrorist scarves! Terrorist scarves!

This is another example of the witless moral equivalence that I devoted a book to refuting last year. It's just stupid rhetorical overheating, but it is worth noting because it distracts from the reality of the global jihad, and that keeps us from defending ourselves against it. If American conservatives really were the "equivalents of jihadists," Keith Olbermann's head would some time ago have been separated from his body. But the obverse is even worse: if jihadists are just like American conservatives, why, then they're just "nutjobs" who "rail against diversity" -- worthy of mockery, but not of serious concern.

And so meanwhile, they continue to advance.

American Liberalism loves anything that opposes Judeo-Christian conservative reasoning. Islam is just their latest darling in the global community.

Posted by: SoteriA [TypeKey Profile Page] at May 29, 2008 8:20 AM

I stopped watching MSNBC about four years ago, when Chris Matthews devoted thirty minutes a night to pictures of Abu Ghraib.
I'm sure Daniel Pearl would have been quite content to have been treated the same way by his Muslim captors but you'd think the US Army was public enemy #1 by the way MSNBC handled its coverage.
Conservatives are the enemy to them. Always have been, always will be.

Posted by: PMK [TypeKey Profile Page] at May 29, 2008 8:25 AM

I wasnt aware conservatives threatened to blow up Dunkin Donuts until the ad was pulled.

ROBERT: "But the obverse is even worse: if jihadists are just like American conservatives, why, then they're just "nutjobs" who "rail against diversity" -- worthy of mockery, but not of serious concern."

Except that Oberman and his Left-wing ilk would never mock Jihadists...political-correctness and fear, not necessarily in that order, preclude such honesty.

Posted by: interestinconundrum [TypeKey Profile Page] at May 29, 2008 8:57 AM

Olberman is grating, I don't like his style at all.
Only self abusing liberals and a few conservatives looking for laughs would tune him in.
A while back Olberman made the mistake of saying something negative about Mark levine, who spent his entire air time castrating Kieth, and I mean 'castrating'. Now that was good radio...

Keith Overbite hasn't got a clue about what is going on out there.

On those rare moments that I think I can stomach his leftwing crap for a few minutes, he never fails to demonstrate how incredibly ignorant and arrogant he is with his diatribes against conservative thinkers.

I just didn't know. I will never say the dark words of fascism "It looks like a kaffiyeh" ever ever again, even if it looks like a kaffiyeh. ooops.

Swastikas were used as a design motif in India for years before Nazis adopted them.

Now they have a very specific meaning, and everyone knows doggone well what it is.

There was another case where shabby chic butted heads with political reality:

Cameron Diaz Apologizes for Maoist Bag

Was this "just a bag?" Certainly not. The main difference is that Maoists don't enjoy the same status as "Palestinians" often do in the media, sheltered by political correctness and trailed by a cloud of euphemisms ("resistance," etc.).

So Diaz's gaffe was called out for what it was, while doing the same in Rachel Ray's case makes one an Islamophobe, a seething reactionary, and quite possibly just plain eeeeeeevil.

I commented about Michelle's comments on a different blog and said that she was over the top, but that doesn't even compare to the 'hug a thug' crowd that includes such notables as Carter, Penn, Glover, etc.

I found his rant about O'Reilly funny too. I don't know what he has against O'Reilly - I listen to him and he isn't very radical at all. In fact, he bends over backwards to be fair and balanced which sometimes seems a bit too appeasing to me.

I would say that the fascist is Olbermann who is unable to deal with people who disagree with him and resort to name calling.

I just watched the video clip and sit here in shock.

Is that what passes for journalism today?

Is the callow behavior exhibited by Mr. Olberman typical standard fare of MSNBC?

What company, in their right mind, would sponsor such journalistic (feh!) twaddle?

I obviously don't watch much television, and it's not likely I ever will watch anything offered by MSNBC, now that I witnessed MSNBC's puerile insult to journalism.

In the long ago days of Palestinian hijacker, Leila Khaled:
http://www.pflp.ps/english/files/images/leilakhaled1.jpg

Arab women could wear this EXTREMELY masculine symbol and the message to Arabs was "our women even are warriors, aren't you men ashamed?"

Now its another 'thing' entirely. Rachel Ray could have been attacked for 'insulting Islam and Arabs' by wearing an important male Arab symbol. The proper 'look' for the 'modern' Palestinian women is no face at all and a bomb belt.

The man is dangerous and evil not just pathetic. When is the last time he saw a "right wing equivalent" murder someone cutting off their head when they are screaming for their life. Presumably he is referring to Christians or Jews. The man is a despicable. Defamation is a statement about someone that is false with knowledge that it is false or in reckless disregard of the truth. Mr. Olbermannn appears too intelligent to claim recklessness. He must be evil!

Posted by: David England [TypeKey Profile Page] at May 29, 2008 9:51 AM

To ignore the significance of symbolism in clothing, I suppose Olberman would also reduce the significance of the color of head rags or scarves worn by gang members or the yellow star worn by jews during WWII.

It's the company he keeps. The very existence of Fox News is what bothers Olbermann. Fox is the liberal's "F" word.

For quite a few years before the 20th Century, the swastika was a symbol of good fortune.
Symbols have meanings which can be interpreted differently by different people. Flags of the Confederacy are a good example.
/Olbermann is a wild jackass braying in the intellectual desert.

Would this ranting speck of vacuity be happy with swastika or KKK hood-wearing or Che T-shirted greasy Donut sellers?

Or rival broadcasters dressed in cartoonish "Native American" outfits and calling themselves "The News Scalpers"?

The irrationality of his faux outrage (when he is a prime shieldbearer of p.c.) in this instance is telling of the politically one-eyed mindset of his ilk.

These kind of journalists are found all over the (free) world. Anybody calling a jihadi terrorist a jihadi terrorist immediately gets labeled as a right winger, arch-conservative, xenophobe, islamophobe, neocon, Hindutva fanatic, etc etc depending on the country you're in. I'm still not sure how many of these journos are honest dupes and how many are beholden to the House of Saud for their bread and butter (or should I say extra spending money?)

We are hanging ourselves with our own tolerance. Our children are going to suffer dearly for the insanity this man spews. On another note I'm all bumed out, because you deleted my waterboarding thing .... the sarcasm was a bit over the top I guess wouldn't want any liberals to see it and become offended LOL ... probably for the best.

In an interview with Rupert murdoch that can be read in todays Wall Street Journal:

"So why aren’t there more liberal voices on Fox News, Kara Swisher asked?"

Murdoch replied, that he would hire a liberal voice if he could find one that was strong enough.

“Would you hire Keith Olbermann?” Swisher asked.

Murdoch’s response: “No, I fired him five years ago… He’s crazy.”

The real truth is that Keith Olbermann has spent his entire life in sportscasting and only recently ventured into the political playing field.

Posted by: Mackie [TypeKey Profile Page] at May 29, 2008 12:56 PM

Quit watching Keith years ago, talk about crazy!! What ever happened to basic journalism? Unbiased, just the facts journalism. Money, I guess.

And yes, he does hate to be disagreed with. Big baby.

Using Olberdoof logic...Police are the equivalent of criminals.

His brain cell is doing all it can...but it's really tired...and stupid...and sick.

The only thing that could open this morons eyes to the danger of Islam, is the same thing that will close them for good.

Islam is a lie. Truth, and when necessary, superior firepower, will kill it.

Keith Olbermann has achieved a very dubious distinction indeed. He is an unintentional parody of the conceited, arrogant, pompous broadcaster. I mean you couldn't act out what he does sincerely on his show on MSNBC. He's his own caricature. And the guy is obsessed with Bill O'Reilly and Fox News. Super obsessed. I watch him occasionally for the same reason I read the editorial page of The New York Times now and again-------for laughs. The sad part, though, is that there are a lot of people out there who take Olbermann seriously, just as there are still a hell of a lot of folks who think The New York Times is a real newspaper.

Olbermann's ignorance of Islam places him at the same level of stupidity as the man he hates even more than Bill O'Reilly: George Bush.

But, given that so many American's still think Islam is 'a religion of peace', he's not alone.

He is conceited, arrogant and pompous as a sportscaster too. Keith appears more concerned about himself rather than whatever he's supposedly reporting about.

Worse than appearing a goofy and not funny, he's boring. No wonder he has no audience.

I liked him better when he was doing sports.

Olbermann does sound like a d**khead. But IMHO some of us anti-jihadists did go overboard in this one. The scarf Rachael is wearing in the ad is not a kaffiyeh at all; it's just a white scarf with a fringe and a black paisley design. I could tell at one glance at a small digital photo that it wasn't a kaffiyeh, and I'm no fashion expert. This was later confirmed. What a silly tempest in a teapot.

A personal anecdote: this isn't the first time the kaffiyeh has become fashionable in the West; I remember back in the mid 80s a lot of young people were sporting them, including yours truly, and I can honestly say that I was no more anti-Israel then than I am now. Nor was I an ignoramus; I was aware of its Arab origins, that it was worn on the head by Yassir Arafat, whom I did not admire, along with millions of other Arab men, and I was also aware that some pro-PLO types wore it as a symbol, usually wrapped around the head and face at demos. As I had no intention of wearing it that way, as I bought it, like everyone else I knew who wore one, primarily to keep my neck warm in the Saskatchewan winter, I figured that people would be intelligent enough not to mistake me for a terrorist supporter. There's nothing intrinsically "Palestinian" about the kaffiyeh; it's just Arab/Middle Eastern, like falafel and belly-dancing. To us it was just another "ethnic-funky" fashion item, albeit a practical one. I like wearing black too, a colour associated with Satanism, and yet I am not a Satanist and as far as I know have never been mistaken for one. I wore my kaffiyeh for years until it became too worn out, then it served as a bedroom curtain for a couple more years. Then I bought another one. It's still in good shape, but I doubt that I'll wear it anymore. It's image has obviously become far too loaded. I still like it, but not enough to risk my politics being misunderstood, by either side. Maybe I'll dye it purple and use it as a kitchen tablecloth.

Who the hell is this loudmouth joker, Keith Olbermann? Someone should tell him that with today's technologically advanced microphones he doesn't have to shout.

I have never heard of him before and hope never to hear of him again.

I do agree with him on one point however. Rachel Ray is, indeed, unbearable, as unbearable as he is.

She and he make the perfect couple.

Posted by: M.O.T. [TypeKey Profile Page] at May 30, 2008 12:48 AM

M.O.T.~ He has to shout because MSNMC and NBC have the 'background' music SO loud that the speaker can barely be heard. They obviously never listen to their own shows or they would know that.

It seems that the word fascist now means ~ "Anyone who disagrees with me."

The kaffiya is not analogous to the KKK hood, the swastika, or the yellow star, all of which were adopted for specific political/ideological purposes. If you want to make a World War II analogy, it would be like wearing a Tyrolean hat or a drindl--i.e., an article of clothing long used by people of a certain ethnic background, but which has no intrinsic political meaning. At worst, it might be like wearing a red scarf, which was the symbol of the Soviet Young Pioneers, or a pith helmet, which during the Vietnam war was commonly worn by soldiers of the People's Army of Vietnam (i.e., the North Vietnamese Army), both of which did have identifications with a particular enemy, but could also have neutral connotations. Those looking for symbolism in Rachael Ray's kaffiya should keep in mind that sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.

Another Kaffiyeh Wearer Gets in Trouble
Fri, May 30, 2008 at 8:48:56 am PDT

A store employee in Australia has gotten in trouble for wearing a kaffiyeh: Keffiyeh kerfuffle hits Bondi bottleshop.

More overreacting right-wingers, seeing terrorist symbols where they don’t exist?

No; this time a Palestinian customer complained because she was wearing it for fashion reasons, rather than as a political statement.

Ms Tieger said she had “no idea about the politics” when she bought the scarf at the Tree Of Life store.

“I thought it was a nice scarf, a cowboy scarf. I thought: ‘It’s black and white, no-one will say anything to me because that’s all we can wear [with our work uniform]’.

“A Palestinian customer came up and asked me if I’m wearing this scarf as a fashion statement or for political reasons.

“I had no idea what he was talking about because I don’t follow politics at all. I just laughed it off.

“Two days later he called and complained about it.”
