I'll bet you never guessed that Omar Sharif and Hugh Fitzgerald were the same person

0_61_sharif_omar.jpg
Hugh, is that you?

Of course, I have said this also, since early 2003 (I wrote the "No" section), before American troops entered Iraq. I guess Hugh and Omar and I are one big happy individual.

It is not a racial problem. It is not some kind of genetic defect. It is a problem arising from the political and social character of Islam, which renders, in the minds of all too many Muslims, the idea of a separation between religion and the state utterly unacceptable.

"Actor Omar Sharif Says Arab Nations Will Never Be Democratized," from FoxNews, June 8 (thanks to all who sent this in):

[...] Sharif said that he spoke with President Bush before the beginning of the Iraq War and told him that Arab nations are made up of sects resistant to becoming democratized.

"I said to Bush, even before he entered Iraq: Forget about all that. We, the Arabs... We are not like [regular countries]," said Sharif. "You will drown there.

After being asked what Bush's response was, the actor stated: "He didn't believe me."

Sharif, who was born Michel Demitri Shalhoub and raised a Roman Catholic, converted to Islam and changed his named when he married Egyptian actress Faten Hamama in 1955....

Robert, Hugh, Omar Sharif, Clark Kent, Batman--it's all so confusing.

Does Hugh play bridge as well as Sharif can?

Posted by: skevin [TypeKey Profile Page] at June 8, 2008 2:33 PM

What's incredible is that even after the Lebanese civil war in the '70s, Bush dismissed the notion of excessive sectarianism among the Arabs possibly coming into play in Iraq. Who's advising him, anyway?
I wonder if Omar Sharif ever considered converting back; though he could be whacked if he openly apostasized.
I liked his narrative role in the Egyptian history IMAX.

Actually, FOX got this from MEMRI, where it has been for over a week. It's well worth watching:

Omar Sharif is no dummy!
He was a world champion backgammon player

Plus his advice to G Bush was correct

Posted by: dennisw [TypeKey Profile Page] at June 8, 2008 2:58 PM

[edit] Early life
Sharif was born Michel Demitri Chalhoub in Alexandria, Egypt, the son of Claire (née Saada) and Joseph Chalhoub, a timber merchant.[1] The family was Roman Catholic,Sharif graduated from Alexandria's Victoria College, then from Cairo University with a mathematics and physics major. Afterwards, he worked with his father in the lumber business.

But Wikipedia says he converted to Islam

"He didn't believe me."
-Sharif on the Bush take toward his advice

Of course not, what could Omar Sharif possibly know about islam or the predictable historical pattern which those "Arab nations" demonstrate?

George has to take the course of those entities who have poured a honey elixir, amongst other things, in his ear.

"Lawrence of Arabia"'s buddy knew what he was taking about.

We haven't exactly "drowned" in Iraq, but all we're going to get out of it is not much better.

Swamped by a Sharia Law Constitution.

And one more Muslim theocratic tyranny.

Paid for by our tax dollars.

Was having certainty over the Iraqi WMD's worth it?

Only if we installed a secular state.

Which Sharif claims is impossible.

The only alternatives would have been:

-Bomb them from afar until they revealed their non-existent WMD's.

-Or bomb them to extinction if a WMD was ever used.

I would have been fine with those two choices.

As opposed to naively sinking billions from our treasure and spending thousands of our lives to merely prop up a stable Mohammedan tyranny.

There can be no Trinity, yet Robert, Hugh, and Omar are the same individual.

Truly, the world is a strange place.

by profitsbeard

Why didn't this become our policy after 9/11 and why isn't it the stated policy of each and every European nation?

Let the Iranians (for instance) do as they please, so long as they understand that the first WMD they launch against anyone (not just the US) will be their last, and that there won't be a single "innocent" Iranian anywhere in that country. (Nuclear weapons are expensive to build and to maintain. If they want to waste their oil profits buying materiel from Western countries, who are we to stop them?) They're nationalistic and they're proud of their nuclear program. Pride can be deadly. Just look at China. Their recent earthquake may have been caused by an underground nuclear explosion.

If you watch the MEMRI video Omar Sharif says that democracy is not suited to the Arabs, if a neighbour steels from you go to the sheik.
Actually, the traditional tribal system isn’t so great, if you have a debt you sell your five year old daughter to clear it.
No moral high ground there.

Posted by: Odyessus [TypeKey Profile Page] at June 8, 2008 4:51 PM

He's not looking too good.

Converting to Islam has taken it's toll.

All that head-banging to a non-existent moon deity.

I agree with Omar Sharif. Democracy does not apply to the Arabs. not only they cannot get along with each other but forget talks and negociations .if You don't agree with them . They will kill you.
and another of their main quality, you cannot trust one word of what they say. They are liars and they will stab you in the back at the first opportunity.
I remember what one of my cousin said . He was in the army and commanded men from a lot of different countries.
He said thaat he could manage with all the soldiers but the Arabs. They were the only one who needed to be directed with a stick not words.

Getting angry about the passport issue, did not matter. What he said to Bush is an other matter.
Becoming a Democracy not on Bushes watch, not on the next President either.
Go and live there for a year or longer. Especialy when you live in the villages. It still will take a long time for them to change, if that will ever happen.
As long they keep on living by the Koran it will never happen.
Changing, updating the Koran, like from the Old Testament to the New Testament, how long will that take.
May be, it will change with " Nukes ".
Than we all better say a prayer.

I know this is OT, but where in the world did you hear/see that?!?

Can anyone verify Omar Sharif's claim that only 10% of Americans have passports? I suspect he fabricated this statistic from thin air. And what percentage of Egyptians have passports?

Posted by: Xero G [TypeKey Profile Page] at June 9, 2008 12:31 AM

Within minutes (ya' gotta love Google) I found passport statistics for USA: http://travel.state.gov/passport/services/stats/stats_890.html

Passports are valid for 10 years and in the past 10 years, 91,441,068 US passports were issued which is approx. 30% of total population.

Omar should check his facts next time or risk revealing again that he's a buffoon.

Posted by: Xero G [TypeKey Profile Page] at June 9, 2008 12:47 AM

Gee

Sepration of church and state prohibited. No democracy. Subjegation of women, Jews, Christians, Homosexuals, Hindus, Buddhaists. Enslavement of blacks in Sudan. Death or Dhimmitude (eventual death) for anyone who does not bow down and bray to Mecca.

Whats not to like. The ACLU will be representing them next week to decertify the US. Constitution.

l guess Omar being an Arab speaks for all Arabs?

Posted by: ZenaWarriorPrincess

I hope this isn't another attempt at excusing Dubya from his ignorance. The man doesn't speak for every Arab but what he said was pretty accurate in general. Many Arabs are resistant to democracy and will continue to resist and the US will infact drown there for it's utopian goal. The question is how many lives must be lost and soldiers injured for the sake of chasing unicorns in the hot desert sands?

George didn't believe him...George knows what Arabs want, what Muslims want more than Arabs and Muslims...just ask him.

Posted by: Sneakyzionistcrusader [TypeKey Profile Page] at June 9, 2008 4:10 PM

In addition to the 30% of Americans who have passports (both the native born and legal immigrants) many millions of American service men and women travel the world; typically without a passport.

Few of my Navy shipmates had passports. We're more well traveled than Omar thinks.
