While everyone is too busy with hurricane predictions and political cheesecake videos to pay any attention to the rapid erosion of the freedom of speech, the stealth jihad proceeds apace in another arena: the Islamization of American public schools.
"Islam in America's public schools: Education or indoctrination?," by Cinnamon Stillwell in the San Francisco Chronicle, June 11 (thanks to all who sent this in):
With fatal terrorist attacks on the decline worldwide and al Qaeda apparently in disarray, it would seem a time for optimism in the global war on terrorism. But the war has simply shifted to a different arena. Islamists, or those who believe that Islam is a political and religious system that must dominate all others, are focusing less on the military and more on the ideological. It turns out that Western liberal democracies can be subverted without firing a shot.Nowhere is this more evident than in the educational realm. Islamists have taken what's come to be known as the "soft jihad" into America's classrooms and children in K-12 are the first casualties. Whether it is textbooks, curriculum, classroom exercises, film screenings, speakers or teacher training, public education in America is under assault.
Capitalizing on the post-9/11 demand for Arabic instruction, some public, charter and voucher-funded private schools are inappropriately using taxpayer dollars to implement a religious curriculum. They are also bringing in outside speakers with Islamist ties or sympathies. As a result, not only are children receiving a biased education, but possible violations of the First Amendment's Establishment Clause abound. Consider the following cases:
* Last month, students at Friendswood Junior High in Houston were required to attend an "Islamic Awareness" presentation during class time allotted for physical education. The presentation involved two representatives from the Council on American-Islamic Relations, an organization with a record of Islamist statements and terrorism convictions. According to students, they were taught that "there is one God, his name is Allah" and that "Adam, Noah and Jesus are prophets." Students were also taught about the Five Pillars of Islam and how to pray five times a day and wear Islamic religious garb. Parents were not notified about the presentation and it wasn't until a number of complaints arose that school officials responded with an apologetic e-mail.
* Earlier this year at Lake Brantley High School in Seminole County, Fla., speakers from the Academy for Learning Islam gave a presentation to students about "cultural diversity" that extended to a detailed discussion of the Quran and Islam. The school neither screened the ALI speakers nor notified parents. After a number of complaints, local media coverage and a subsequent investigation, the school district apologized for the inappropriate presentation, admitting that it violated the law. Subsequently, ALI was removed from the Seminole County school system's Dividends and Speaker's Bureau.
* As reported by the Cabinet Press, a school project last year at Amherst Middle School transformed "the quaint colonial town of Amherst, N.H., into a Saudi Arabian Bedouin tent community." Male and female students were segregated, with the girls hosting "hijab and veil stations" and handing out the oppressive head-to-toe black garment known as the abaya to female guests. Meanwhile, the boys hosted food and Arabic dancing stations because, as explained in the article, "the traditions of Saudi Arabia at this time prevent women from participating in these public roles." An "Islamic religion station" offered up a prayer rug, verses from the Quran, prayer items and a compass pointed towards Mecca. The fact that female subjugation was presented as a benign cultural practice and Islamic religious rituals were promoted with public funds is cause for concern.
* Tarek ibn Ziyad Academy, a charter school in Inver Grove Heights, Minn., came under recent scrutiny after Minneapolis Star-Tribune columnist Katherine Kersten brought to light concerns about public funding for its overtly religious curriculum. The school is housed in the Muslim American Society's (the American branch of the Egyptian Islamist group the Muslim Brotherhood) Minnesota building, alongside a mosque, and the daily routine includes prayer, ritual washing, halal food preparation and an after-school "Islamic studies" program. Kersten's columns prompted the Minnesota chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union to issue a press release expressing its own reservations about potential First Amendment violations. An investigation initiated by the Minnesota Department of Education verified several of Kersten's allegations and the school has since promised to make the appropriate changes. In a bizarre twist, when a local television news crew tried to report on the findings from school grounds, school officials confronted them and wrestled a camera away from one of its photographers, injuring him in the process.
* The controversy surrounding the founding of New York City's Arabic language public school, Khalil Gibran International Academy, last year continues. Former principal Dhabah "Debbie" Almontaser was asked to step down after publicly defending T-shirts produced by Arab Women Active in the Arts and Media, an organization with whom she shared office space, emblazoned with "Intifada NYC." But KGIA has other troublesome associations. Its advisory board includes three imams, one of whom, New York University Imam Khalid Latif, sent a threatening letter to the university's president regarding a planned display of the Danish cartoons. Another, Shamsi Ali, runs the Jamaica Muslim Center Quranic Memorization School in Queens, a replica of the type of Pakistani madrassa (or school) counter-terrorism officials have been warning about since 9/11. Accordingly, several parents founded Stop the Madrassa: A Community Coalition to voice their contention that KGIA is an inappropriate candidate for taxpayer funding....

Does anyone see a correlation between this growing problem and the language restrictions imposed by the current Administration on federal employees?And the recent apology by the President?

This is also why Federal investigation into the ACLU should be brought forward. ACLU has become a tool to suppress all religions and advance Islam at the same time.
The ACLU should lose it's non-profit status.
The school adminitrators need to share the 'who' is passing these requirements down the ranks. And the 'who' should lose their job at the least, if not more that could happen to them.
Someone is bringing this stuff into the schools and it is happening at toooooo many schools in toooo many areas all at the same time.

You betcha. We are being infiltrated, no question. As an aside, A few months ago I was required to take online management training as part of my job. One of the training segments was devoted to religious tolerance in the workplace. Guess which religion was used as the case study for the tolerance training? Yep, good ole Islam. I was thinking to myself at the time, Islam is one of the tiniest religious minorities in this country (so far, thank God) wouldn't a Jewish or Catholic case study be much more applicable to our country for religious tolerance teaching purposes? ... and in the middle of the case study they invoked the abominable Bush's terminology, "Religion of Peace". We are being assaulted on so many levels by the silent jihad.

The left is slowly learning. An article like this would get no where on Fox News, but in the SF Chron, maybe it will get the left's attention. The secular left is even more threatened by the spread of Islam then the religious right. Islam is not a faith. It is pure ideology. It offers no escape and no freedom. It kills those who vocally disagree with it or choose to opt out once in. It humiliates those who do not join, until they either die, are killed, or cave in and join. It's leaders are the imams. They are the party apparatchniks that know how to make the most of a bad situation--control or be controlled. Islam is a virus that the imams are the most directly responsible for spreading. They choose to be leaders; they have death on their breathe.

I had the same thought, how refreshing that a leftie appears to "get it" about "Islamists," and their subversive ways, but she needs to go beyond this and see that the problem has always been fundamental, orthodox, by the book ISLAM, which constitutes a clear and present danger to children and other sentient beings.

Actually, I'm encouraged. Step by slow step, Islam continues to overstep what is considered right, decent and proper in America. And more Americans are noticing this as the months and years go by. Holy hell, even some liberals are beginning to stumble into the truth respecting Islam's nefarious agenda. As I said, I'm encouraged.

The people behind this sort of crap are generally secular liberals, who share several beliefs with their Islamic breathern.
1) Hatred of Christianity.
2) Hatred of the West and its values.
Because of these beliefs the secular left will support religions and movements that are in the long term lethal to its existence and to the nation.
Put another way, if say Greek Orthodox Christians were to put together a presentation for a public school, every leftist in a 500 miles would be threatening the school board with lawsuits and riots.
Thats the secular left. The same one that is silent in the face of FGM, Muslims intimidating the MSM over the motoons, etc.
As for the ACLU, its known that George Soros pumped some $12 million into that organization. Then add to it that he wants to see the U.S. taken down a couple of notches.

If you read the comments sections at places other than Jihad Watch, it becomes clear, unfortunately, that there are a lot of folks out there who believe in their hearts that fears of the spread of Islamic law into the West are just paranoias fostered by right-wing conservative provinciality and small-mindedness, and by the sick need to invent an enemy. Given that state of belief in the wider world, it might be most helpful now if there were more people willing to speak from a leftist point of view against the global jihad (including the stealth jihad via demography and money and without guns or bombs). The fight against Islamic supremacism must be detached from attacks on the left, or we may be doomed. Most on the left will only be willing to be convinced by someone they perceive as one of their own. Someone who is attacking the left at every turn will obviously not get a sympathetic ear. If the left is not convinced of the dangers the West faces, then the West may remain too divided to effectively defend itself, certainly in Europe, where Muslims are very soon going to constitute a majority of the youth population in many cities. So, when arguing with lefties about the dangers of the spread of Islamic law, etc., one will often be most effective if one does not bring into the discussion any criticisms of the left, in fact if one even praises the left. Criticism should be kept focused on Islam, and how it will damage the interests and goals of the left.

My seventh grade son's California Public school textbook is an Islamic propaganda tome. He actually brought it home to me and asked me to tell him what was true in the textbook and what wasn't. The class had to draw an outline of their hand, and write the five pillars of Islam. They had to write them on their test. NO TEN COMMANDMENTS, but they had to write the five pillars...
Imagine, given my Greek heritage, finding out that the textbooks says Ottomans gave Greek boys an education and gave them status as Janisaries! And how Christians were allowed to practice their religion under Islamic rule. No mention of jizya. No mention of distinctive "Christian dress". No mention of kidnapping children to become Janisaries.
Greeks, I explained, were required to wear broad red cumberbunds, and funny hats and shoes so everyone would know they were Christian. More than one Greek lost their life when they, even temporarily, put on a fez, and were declared to be Muslim apostates. Christians were heavily taxed to be able to go to Church. When a Muslim wanted their property, they were taxed beyond what they could pay, and their wives and children became slaves. Boys who resisted going with the Turks to be Janisaries were killed, or forced to kill their mother, father, sisters and brothers.
Islam was not the first non-animist religion in Africa,
Ethiopia was Jewish for thousands of years, and has been a Christian nation longer than any other.
The Middle East was Christian until Islam invaded, slaughtered the men, and enslaved the women and children.
WE DESPERATELY NEED TO GET THESE BOOKS OUT OF OUR SCHOOLS! Parents across American have been trying for nearly ten years now to bring this to teachers, school boards, and the publishers attention. Our children are being lulled into an acceptance of Islam as a benign entity.

that is dreadful.
Thank God that you, at least, were able to tell your child the truth, right from your own family's knowledge - backed up, I would guess, by what you've learned here.
But think of all the non-Greek families who haven't got a clue. Who cannot understand why Greeks (whether Christian or atheist) don't trust Turkish Muslims, or for that matter, any Muslim; why there is so much fear and so much hostility - all of it, in light of the history, completely rational and justified.
Are there Greek community organisations - I know here in Australia we have things like the Greek Club or the Hellenic Society - that you could take the textbook to, show them chapter and verse, so they can kick up a massive stink? Greek Orthodox church groups and church leaders?
You could always form an alliance with members of other groups who also suffered under Islamic occupation and whose terrible history has also been blandly elided. Serbs; Bulgarians; Maronites; Copts; any Sudanese Christian refugees in your neighbourhood?
For that matter, Spanish American families need to recover their own historic memory. Like the Greek Orthodox, the Spanish Catholics kept their language, faith and culture heroically under hideous Muslim oppression and persecution and in the end - by heroic and persistent effort - threw off the Muslim yoke. Kids need to know that stuff. THAT'S what needs to be in the history books.
I can't name, right now, the heroes of the Greek resistance to Islam: the saints, the bishops who died under torture, the warriors who finally liberated Greece. But as a kafir, an inhabitant of the free world, I OUGHT to know their names. They should be just as famous as - indeed, they should be MORE famous than - the heroes of '300'.
In the meantime - are there any other Greek families in the school? Would you be able to go as a group of angry parents, to the headmaster and your child's teacher, and the PTA, taking along Bat Yeor, 'The Decline of Eastern Christianity Under Islam', and Bostom's 'Legacy of Jihad', so you can rub their noses in the primary documentation of such horrors as the Taking of Constantinople, the devshirme, the periodic mass murders, the destruction of churches, mass deportations and enslavements, and so on, ad nauseam? Tell them about the sack of Smyrna in the 1950s.
Note to self: make sure I examine my own children's school 'social studies/ history' textbooks (I have one kid in Yr 5 and one in Yr 10).

It is kind of interesting to compare the text books before and after Islamization.
Arun Shourie wrote this about the changes of school books that took place in West Bengal:
"Concerned teachers in West Bengal have been so kind
as to send me the circular relating to textbooks for class IX.
Dated 28 April, 1989, it is issued by the West Bengal
Secondary Board. It is in Bengali, and carries the number
"Syl/89/1".
"All the West Bengal Government recognised
secondary school Headmasters are being informed," it
begins, "that in History textbooks recommended by this
Board for Class IX the following amendments to the
chapter on the medieval period have been decided after due
discussions and review by experts." "
"The authors and publishers of Class IX History
textbooks," it continues, "are being requested to
incorporate the amendments if books published by them
have these aushuddho [impurities, errors] in all subsequent
editions, and paste a corrigendum in books which have
already been published. A copy of the book with the
corrigendum should be deposited with the Syllabus Office
(74, Rafi Ahmed Kidwai Road, Calcutta -- 16)." Signed, "....Chattopadhyaya, Secretary."
The accompanying pages contain two columns :
aushuddho -- impurity, or error -- and shuddho. One has
just to glance through the changes to see the objective the
progressives are trying to achieve through their "objective",
"rational" approach to the writing of history. Here are some
of the changes.

Page 141 : Aushuddho -- "Fourthly, using force to destroy Hindu temples was also an expression of aggression. Fifthly, forcibly marrying Hindu women and converting them to Islam before marriage was another way to propagate the fundamentalism of the ulema."
Shuddho : though the column reproduces the sentences only from "Fourthly....", the Board directs that the entire matter from "Secondly.... to ulema" be deleted.
Page 89 : Aushuddho -- "Sultan Mahmud used force for widespread murder, loot, destruction and conversion."
Shuddho -- "There was widespread loot and destruction by Mahmud."
Page 154 : Aushuddho -- "As dictated by Islam, there were three options for non-Muslims : get yourself converted to Islam; pay jaziya; accept death. In an Islamic State non-Muslims had to accept one of these three options."
Shuddho -- Delete.
Page 161 : Aushuddho -- "The early Sultans were eager to expand the sway of Islam by forcibly converting Hindus into Islam."
Shuddho -- Delete.
Page 130 : Ashuddho -- "That is why he adopted the policy of converting Hindus to Islam -- so as to increase the number of Muslims. Those Hindus who refused to discard their religion were indiscriminately massacred by him or his generals." Shuddho -- Delete.
