Hundreds of Taliban escape in attack on Kandahar prison

Some men, you just can't reach

"After the massive explosion, which was heard across the city and destroyed the gate and a police checkpoint, reports say up to 30 motorcycles raced forward, carrying armed men firing rocket-propelled grenades, machine-guns and AK-47s."

"1,000 inmates escape from Afghan prison after blast," by Doug Schmidt for Canwest News Service, June 13:

KANDAHAR CITY, Afghanistan - Canadian soldiers joined other ISAF and Afghan national security forces in a sweeping door-to-door hunt for hundreds of escaped prisoners after the Taliban staged a daring mass breakout at Kandahar City’s Sarpoza Prison late Friday.
A suicide bomber drove up to the prison’s main entrance and detonated his vehicle at about 9:30 p.m. local time. After the massive explosion, which was heard across the city and destroyed the gate and a police checkpoint, reports say up to 30 motorcycles raced forward, carrying armed men firing rocket-propelled grenades, machine-guns and AK-47s. During the ensuing 20-minute battle in the city’s west side, hundreds of prisoners were able to flee. It was still unclear how many escaped from the prison, which houses almost 1,200 inmates, including about 400 Taliban.
A Taliban spokesman said the group is claiming responsibility. [...]
One official told Reuters between 750 and 800 prisoners had managed to escape, adding some prisoners were killed in a gun battle between police and Taliban fighters inside the jail.
"I think scores of others are caught up inside," he said, adding he suspected the gate was blown up by a suicide bomber driving a truck. Several Taliban fighters entered the prison and started freeing the inmates, he said.
The blast caused an unknown number of casualties among the guards, prison director Abdul Qadir told Reuters.
"They (Taliban) used a truck to blow the gate open and all of the guards (at the gate) have been killed and are under rubble," he said by telephone. As he spoke, bursts of gunfire could be heard in the background.
The two officials who declined to be named said the Taliban fired several rockets at various parts of the mud-built prison.

Probably not the best place to house dangerous inmates posing a high risk of flight.

Hours after the attack, several rockets hit a base used by foreign troops in another part of the city, an official and several residents said. Sirens were heard from inside the base, they added, but no further details were immediately available....

I think they did not know of the Supreme courty ruling giving them US consitutional rights when captured with their very own prayer rug and koran.

Since they are no longer prisoners they will not benefit by the new Supreme Court ruling.

Now the 'rules of engagement in the field' apply. When your enemy is not in uniform he is to be treated as a spy, and shot.

I have a strange feeling that we may start seeing fewer and fewer prisoners being captured in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The most fitting response that can be paid to Anthony Kennedy's idiotic swing vote of yesterday is not to bother with taking prisoners, in this instance or on innumerable other occasions in the future. Just shoot the bastards.

So,

You get what we had here last week. And, I don't like it any more than you men.......

We went into Iraq and now have two running Islamic sores on our hands. We can't even get Afghanistan right but we are going to bring Western style democracy to the whole Muslim world, what a hash dream! Carp about the Supreme Court all you want, but that is irrelevant to this case.

No, no, no. This is all wrong. Don't they realize "Mission Accomplished"?

Muslim countries sure have a hard time keeping jihadis in jail.

Why didn't these 800 jihadis just ask to be taken out to pray at the nearest mosque, and then all sneak out the side window when their guards weren't looking? It has worked in the past.

What ? The inmates were not satisfied with the quality of the halal hot meals ? Were the prayer rugs too small ? The springs in the mattresses were loose ? Did some Infidel Allied soldier actually handle the quran without his gloves on ? Or were the inmates not allowed to halal their own meals ?

What ?

"What ?

Maybe Hollywood will make a move about this jail-break.

Clint Eastwood can play the part of the planner and leader of the pack of liberators.

George Clooney can be Prison Director Abdul Qadir.

Karen Armstrong can do the narration.

John Esposito can write the screenplay.

I can't wait for the DVD.

They escaped and now have to be captured or killed, as soon as possible.

And yes, if the Kennedy five ruling stands, those captured will not be put back in prison.

The tragedy is not that s... happens, it is that a rational approach with long term possibilities of success are cut off.

The Dems and their toadies on the bench are both traitors and a..holes.

Why they live here and not in their much vaunted socialist paradises is beyond one.

As for the movie, maybe Clint can get Spike Lee to play the Taliban Leader.

As for "Mission Accomplished", the sign referred to the brave sailors on the carrier who had just indeed accomplished THEIR mission. If you researched or read anything besides Huffington Post, you'd know that.

You left out Sean Penn. What Mohammedan will he play, and then go back to his Hollywood mansion after filming?

What we got here is failure to communicate.

Posted by: del [TypeKey Profile Page] at June 14, 2008 7:50 PM

Not to mention Michael Moore being editor.

Whoops. Should have mentioned Michael Moore being director instead.
