BRUSSELS - Malika El Aroud, a 48-year-old Belgian, calls herself a female warrior for Al Qaeda.
In a movement that gives women little power, Ms. El Aroud has distinguished herself on the Internet.
Writing in French under the name “Oum Obeyda," she has transformed herself into one of the most prominent Internet jihadists in Europe.
She insists that she does not disseminate instructions on bomb-making and has no intention of taking up arms herself. Rather, she bullies Muslim men to go and fight and rallies women to join the cause.
“It’s not my role to set off bombs - that’s ridiculous," she said in a rare interview. “I have a weapon. It’s to write. It’s to speak out. That’s my jihad. You can do many things with words. Writing is also a bomb."
Ms. El Aroud is well known to intelligence officials throughout Europe as simply “Malika" - an Islamist who is at the forefront of the movement by women to take a larger role in the male-dominated global jihad.
The authorities have noted an increase in suicide bombings carried out by women - the American military reports that 18 women have conducted suicide missions in Iraq so far this year, compared with 8 all of last year - but they say there is also a less violent yet potentially more insidious army of women serving as organizers, proselytizers, teachers, translators and fund-raisers.
“Malika is a role model, an icon who is bold enough to identify herself,” said Claude Moniquet, president of the Brussels- based European Strategic Intelligence and Security Center. “She plays a very important strategic role as a source of inspiration. She’s very clever - and extremely dangerous."
Ms. El Aroud began her rise to prominence after her husband, two days before the attacks on September 11, 2001, carried out a bombing in Afghanistan that killed the anti-Taliban resistance leader Ahmed Shah Massoud at the behest of Osama bin Laden. Her husband was killed, and she took to the Internet as the widow of a martyr.
She remarried, and in 2007 she and her new husband were convicted in Switzerland for operating pro-Qaeda Web sites. Now, according to the Belgium authorities, she is a suspect in what the authorities say they believe is a plot to carry out attacks in Belgium.
“Ask your mothers, your wives to order your coffins," she wrote to a supposed Western audience in March about wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. To her followers she added: “Victory is appearing on the horizon, my brothers and sisters. Let’s intensify our prayers."
The rise of women comes against a backdrop of discrimination that has permeated radical Islam. Last month, Ayman al-Zawahri, Al Qaeda’s second in command, said in an online questionand- answer session that women could not join Al Qaeda.
The changing role of women in the movement is particularly apparent in Western countries.
Ms. El Aroud reflects that trend. “Normally in Islam the men are stronger than the women, but I prove that it is important to fear God - and no one else," she said.
Ms. El Aroud collects more than $1,100 a month in government unemployment benefits.
“Her jihad is not to lead an operation but to inspire other people to wage jihad," said Glenn Audenaert, the director of Belgium’s federal police force, in an interview. “She enjoys the protection that Belgium offers. At the same time, she is a potential threat'"
Although Ms. El Aroud insists that she is not breaking the law, she knows that the police are watching. And if the authorities find way to put her in prison, she said: “That would be great.
They would make me a living martyr."

Oh, for god's sake. Buttalo fuori. Get her out of the country. Figure out a way. If the Beligan police and Belgian government can't figure out a way, then there is something wrong with the laws and customs of Belgium and those laws, and the attitudes that support that kind of suicide (here, yet again, Mr. Justice Jackson: "The Constitutioin is not a suicide pact."), both have to be changed to meet the case.
And the same thing can be said for any other Infidel land that finds itself helpless before such a situation, reduced to a state of expensive support-cum-monitoring for these universal enemies. Don't imprison them, but force them out, so that they won't be on our dole or in our presence where they can do harm - even or perhaps especially in prison, as they conduct campaigns of Da'wa, to a country already reduced by Islam.
If what she is doing now is not a crime according to the laws of Belgium, then the laws of Belgium need some fixing.

It's ridiculous that this filth is allowed to remain in an infidel land and on the dole. Laws can be changed and these enemies of the infidels can be forced to live in one of the many Islamic paradises on earth.This reminds me of the Muslima teenager who was an illegal living in New York who express her believe that it is acceptable to kill in "defense" of Islam.She was deported back to the Islamic paradise of Bangladesh where the NYT reported that she cried when informed she would have to share a bed with four other Muslims.

In Belgium, almost everybody gets money if unemployed. It is attractive.
Waffles and chocolates are not a real threat for the ability to recognize a horrible threat ... Maybe is it Belgian beer?
She is a Belgian, of Morrocan origin, but she is a Belgian. She cannot be sent out of the country.
I have never seen what she writes, but it might probably be considered as incitement to violence, which is a crime.
[Do you know Gad's joke? "I am a Morrocan" sounds like "I am American". Several European Morrocans (not all of them are jihadists) like to make this joke with Americans.]

There was a famous hacker case in the U.S. about ten years ago where, as part of the sentence, the guy was not allowed to use a computer for a number of years. Why could not a law be passed that would assert that access to the Internet is not a right, but a privilege, like driving, and subject to restriction if abused? This would include all activity, everything, that derives in whole or in part from online access - no email (either send or receive), no putting up of a web site, even if hosted by a hosting company, etc., no Skype - nothing that makes use in any way of Internet technology. Of course, enforcement could be problematical, but, hey, it would give lawyers something useful to do. Such a law could significantly reduce such stuff as this if intelligently implemented and enforced.

This is easily resolved - simply include a morality clause to the qualification requirements for any taxpayer-funded benefits.
Criminals, those connected with terrorists, instigating or promoting terrorism, polygamy, child brides, slavery - anything cultural or religious that violates the laws of country they are residing - instant disqualification for assistance.

It's likely that the $1100/mo she's getting is just the cash part of a much larger package of benefits. She probably also gets free or subsidized housing, free medical care, the Euro equivalent of food stamps, etc. $1100 doesn't go far in present-day Belgium.

If she is bullying, er, encouraging men to fight, isn't this a form of sedition, treason, or some other crime? Why is she still connected to the internet? Why is she not in prison or out of Belgium?

Yes, man has become something that was not part of the original created order. Today we work hard to promote things that we know are harmful for us, but we pretend it is not.

Europe and Belgium in particular need "Welfare Reform", any able bodied person needs to be taken off the dole after a very short time, and then deportation if they are not Belgium born, and jailed if they are when proven as she is for inciting violence against Belgians. l would love to see her in a household of the sauds, where she would be used up very quickly. let her live a true muslim women. these brave muslim women inciting violence from the safe confines of a Western country need to be taught a very valueable lesson of what a real humane society is, and that fearing her god allah is not cracked up to be when you live out the life as a concubine or one of multiple wives of a muslim man.

Malika El Aroud, widow of an al-Qaida suicide bomber, received a six-month prison sentence suspended for three years....
The suspects, who are now married to each other, were released on bail after their initial detention and had moved to Belgium.

There is no indication in this article that this woman was Belgian. (The original link was not available.) It didn't indicate that she was born in Belgium.
A six-month sentence suspended for three years? On what conditions? Maybe she could be extradited to Switzerland and imprisoned.
In any case this woman's words and deeds should be proof to all of our leaders that you don't need to be a suicide bomber to be a jihadist.
How is it that this woman's acts aren't criminal? She is urging and encouraging others to kill non-Muslims. Does Belgium have no laws against criminal incitement? Surely the legal code applies incitement to more than just riots.

Christians usually became martyrs while either being held captive or while defending a vicious assault.
Muslims usually become martyrs while trying to attack in an effort to kill as many people as possible and they encourage their women and children to become Muslim martyrs to make a statement of fear...Muslims intentionally send their people out to become martyrs to instill fear and for propoganda purposes to insite its masses into further violent actions...

Islamic martyrdom ain't what it used to be. There are thousands of them since about 1970; it's hard to remember any particular one. They tend to get lost in the crowd. Martyrdom is beginning to look like a bowling league trophy.

Wow, finally something we agree on. But that does not mean that homosexuals should be killed or persecuted, as it is the case in Islam.
Back to Ms. El Aroud - it is simply incredible that someone like her cannot be kicked out immediately. I hope that cases like this one will lead to a change in our Eurabian laws, especially those concerning immigration policies.

Then why don't they all just kill themselves and be done with it? And leave us "sinners" here to enjoy God's Earth without the scourge that is islam.
The difference between Nuns being holy and mulsim women being oppressed is because nuns are never murdered by their fathers for not covering their faces. Nuns do it by choice, muslim women do it through threat of violence.
