Gratitude. "Somali killings of aid workers imperil relief," by Jeffrey Gettleman for the IHT, July 20 (thanks to DFS):
NAIROBI, Kenya: At a time of drought, skyrocketing food prices, crippling inflation and intensifying street fighting, many of the aid workers whom millions of Somalis depend on for survival are fleeing their posts — or in some cases the country.They are being driven out by what appears to be an organized terror campaign. Ominous leaflets recently surfaced on the bullet-pocked streets of Mogadishu, Somalia's ruin of a capital, calling aid workers "infidels" and warning them that they will be methodically hunted down. Since January, at least 20 aid workers have been killed, more than in any year in recent memory. Still others have been abducted. [...]
A plane with at least a dozen Somali aid workers left Mogadishu on Friday. Several workers said it was the leaflets that scared them away.
"These people are serious," said one Somali aid professional who is now hiding with her family outside Mogadishu.
The leaflets were tacked onto walls and scattered on streets in Mogadishu about 10 days ago. They could not have made the threat any clearer. "We know all the so-called aid workers," they read. "We promise to kill them, wherever they are." [...]
"Then, when the sacred months have passed, slay the idolaters wherever ye find them, and take them (captive), and besiege them, and prepare for them each ambush" -- Qur'an 9:5.

But several factions of Somalia's Islamist movement, which is fighting an intense guerrilla war against the government, have condemned the attacks.Sheik Muktar Robow Abu Monsur, a leader of the Shebab insurgent group, said Islamic militants were actually guarding food convoys. United Nations officials have mixed feelings about the Shebab, saying that some factions are violently anti-Western while others recently helped free two kidnapped aid workers.
Some Western security analysts theorize that in the violent murkiness that has overtaken the country, unsavory elements within the Somali government may be killing aid workers to discredit Islamist opposition groups and draw in United Nations peacekeepers, who may be the government's last hope for survival.
The government admits that it desperately needs peacekeepers. But it denies that it is attacking aid workers to get them.
"It's obvious who's doing this," said Abdi Awaleh Jama, a Somali ambassador at large. "It's hard-liner Islamists who hate the West. They are forces of darkness, not forces of light."...

I guess the air pollution must be something else in Somalia. I've heard of a "killer fog"; this must be some variant of that.

The only good thing I've seen to come out of Somalia is Hirsi Ali.
After the incident where a certain US soldier was killed, desecrated, and his body dragged through their "streets" I would think the message would be crystal clear: DON'T FEED THE SOMALIS! They don't appreciate it.
Let them feed themselves, or beg from their more wealthy Muslim brothers. The "Ummah" needs to learn some self-sufficiency.

No matter, their holiness and their recitals of the koran will feed the people. There's a point that I just don't care anymore. We try to help these people and the beards just become hysterical because someone dares to challenge them.
Fine, starve to death; their fanaticism will be taken care of.

And the peacekeepers they want are obviously American and British troops. African peacekeepers are notoriously corrupt, untrained and ill disciplined. They will simply contribute to the mayhem.
Once the first elation has died, these very same Somalis will be shooting, bombing and lying in ambush for the peacekeepers and food distributors. Besides Western peacekeepers bring with them huge amounts of money to distribute, and also offer themselves as Infidel targets.
No thanks.
It is sad to state, but that is the nature of Somalis. Somalia is what it is now, because of the nature of Somalis. By allowing millions of them into the West, we have brought in those very attitudes that have brought Somalia to the condition it is in.

All aid and aid workers should be removed from Muslim dominated lands...as a parting act, leaflets should be air dropped:.
"If you are miserable, poor, oppressed and starving and you wonder why the world has deserted you...Thank Allah and Islam."

exsgtbrown l agree with you a hundred and ten percent. l almost want to throw a electried barbed wire fence over every muslim country, let them eat their #$!@$@# oil, no Westerner would be allowed to enter a muslim land, and all pious muslims sent back with one way tickets for the nice ones, all others can swim back.

Why we give these violent rejects a crumb is beyond me. They are savages, let their so called Muslim brothers help them, you know, the ones with the trillions of oil dollars. But thanks to the military nanny mentality of the Bush's we are stuck being the sugar daddies to these ungrateful, uncivilized Islamic scum.

Funnily enough, a half-Somali medical student from the UK playing the troll on this site, a year or two back, said that she was the only thing that made him ashamed to be a Somali. I'm all for having a good opinion of oneself and one's country but sometimes the conceit and disconnect with reality of Muslims can be astonishing.
I'm fairly certain that he's now returned as 'Talib' although if that is the same person, he's become violently abusive rather more quickly than last time.

Such evil blindness! People who bow to a god which requires astoundingly mindless wickedness. The opposite of Christianity as espoused in the Bible. This god invites his followers to become ignorant, sadistic, bloodthirsty, animals. I also can't help but notice that using this subject to bash the president just shows a basic ignorance of our geopolitical situation, and our own cultural mentality.

Ayaan Hirsi Ali is living proof that what is wrong with Somalia - and other hellholes within the Islamosphere, places as far away from Somalia as Afghanistan, Aceh or Gaza - is memetic, not genetic.
Waris Dirie hasn't gone the whole way and apostasised, but she is another example of a beautiful, smart Somali woman who - having escaped the hellhole - is trying to help people (by campaigning against FGM).
I am sure that, if one looked carefully, one would also find Somalis who have - in countries outside Somalia - apostasised from Islam. I recall a story that ran here at jihadwatch, about a Somali man who had become a Christian in the UK and then (somewhat rashly, perhaps) returned to his homeland to work as a schoolteacher and was promptly martyred. Interesting that his first thought, as a new Christian, was to try to help people.
There must be others who have left Islam and are peacefully living productive lives while keeping a low profile. I read, not long ago, a Bible Society article about Somali women in Kenya, converting to Christianity. It sounded like they were doing it perfectly seriously - after all, the risk of being known as an apostate, where there is a large Somali Muslim community, would be pretty high.
Priority #1: the major Christian churches could pool resources to flood expatriate Somali Muslim immigrant communities (e.g in US, Netherlands) with good quality Bible radio in the various Somali languages, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Incorporate gospel songs in traditional music style; find traditional songs that don't have Muslim content (there must surely be some). Mix in accurate news items, and testimonies of those who have apostasised, and baby health and womens' health information in a program slot advertised 'for ladies listening only'.
#2 - do the same for Somalia itself (and smuggle in small, easy-to-hide, easy-to-power radio receivers).
#3 - Don't take in any more Somali migrants. Make a concerted effort to deprogram the ones already living outside Somalia in countries with non-Muslim majorities.
I'm sure Ayaan Hirsi Ali would be only too happy to suggest the sorts of 'deprogramming' materials that might be most effective.
I know that she said that as a young teenager in Kenya, she loved: Hans Christian Anderson, Famous Five, Secret Seven, Nancy Drew...and sizzling Harlequin Romances. Get her to translate the stories she loved best, back then, into Somali and record her or other ladies reading them aloud; then every morning and afternoon for half an hour women and girls can tune in to a nice book-reading.
Worth a try. Intelligently composed radio broadcasts into the USSR, China, Vietnam were powerfully effective during the Cold War.
But otherwise: nothing goes into Somalia and nothing comes out. No Infidel aid or weapons go in; and no more Somali Muslims are let in to the Infidel lands.

Getting rid of the terrible unbelievers is far more important than whether their neighbors and kids are starving and dying.
It's very much as Golda Meir put it about the pali arabs -- the war will be over when they love their children more than they hate the Jews.
And the principle applies generally.
True then, still true now.

I have a good idea to solve the Somali civil war. Evacuate all decent people from that country and then surround Somalia in a blocade. Hopefully, the Jihadists will start killing each other off. If that is done, then Somalia can be rebuilt. Such a move would let other Jihadists around the world know that the same fait awaits them.

Yes--and horrific as it is to note, some Western academics feel the same way.
Shortly after the terrible "Blackhawk down" incident of the mid-'90s, Assistant Professor Nicholas De Genova of Columbia University called for "a million Mogadishus".
Can you, really, think of anything more appalling than the idea of "a million Mogadishus"? Just about as close as you can get to hell on earth.
