Snapped Shot has some ideas for Wahhaj's marketing campaign
The ads are being paid for by the Islamic Circle of North America, which, as Marisol noted here, is one of the organizations listed in the infamous 1991 Muslim Brotherhood memo as participating in a "grand Jihad" aimed at "eliminating and destroying the Western civilization from within and sabotaging its miserable house by their hands and the hands of the believers so that it is eliminated and God's religion is made victorious over all other religions."
Siraj Wahhaj, meanwhile, has warned that the United States will fall unless it “accepts the Islamic agenda.” He has lamented that “if only Muslims were clever politically, they could take over the United States and replace its constitutional government with a caliphate.” In the early 1990s he sponsored talks by Sheikh Omar Abdel Rahman in mosques in New York City and New Jersey; Rahman was later convicted for conspiring to blow up the World Trade Center in 1993, and Wahhaj was designated a “potential unindicted co-conspirator.”
"Winner Takes Allah: MTA's Islam Ad Furor," by Jeremy Olshan for the New York Post, July 22:
Elected officials and straphangers called on the MTA yesterday to pull the Islamic subway-ad campaign being promoted by a controversial Brooklyn imam whom federal officials have linked to acts of terrorism. The push to promote Islam on the rails this September, in a $48,000 ad campaign sponsored by the Islamic Circle of North America, was reported in The Post yesterday.
"I strongly believe the MTA should pull the ads," said Rep. Peter King (R-LI), a ranking member of the Homeland Security Committee. "They are especially shameful because the ads will be running during the seventh anniversary of September 11, and because the subways are considered a primary target of terrorists."
Although the group says the ads - which will coincide with the holy month of Ramadan - aim to educate non-Muslims and reach out to those interested in joining the faith, many are incensed that Imam Siraj Wahhaj was chosen as the pitchman in a YouTube video for "The Subway Project."
In 1995, federal officials named Wahhaj an unindicted co-conspirator in a plot to blow up city landmarks, although he was never formally charged.
A former member of the Nation of Islam, Wahhaj also served as a character witness in the trial of convicted terrorist Sheik Omar Abdel-Rahman, and has said that he hopes one day all Americans are "persuaded" to become Muslims.
MTA officials said the ads are protected as free speech under the First Amendment. Mayor Bloomberg agreed.
"If you were to advocate becoming a Muslim, I assume the First Amendment would protect you," he said. The content of the ads themselves is not offensive or suggestive of violence or terrorism, officials said....

"They are especially shameful because the ads will be running during the seventh anniversary of September 11, and because the subways are considered a primary target of terrorists."
BINGO. Good on Rep. Peter King.
Quoting the previous story:
The stark, black-and-white ads of the Subway Project promote Islam with the goals of clearing up long-held misconceptions about the faith and reaching out to those interested in becoming Muslim, according to the Islamic Circle of North America, the group behind the campaign.
Goal 1 = clearing up long held misconceptions
Then the audience for this campaign exists not on public transportation (especially that of NYC), but within Wahhaj's own congregation, and congregations like his.
If this is about ramadan - then it's time for some of that 'internal struggle' version of jihad so frequently tossed out there. Time for some inner reflection.
The language of the suicide bomb, hijacked aircraft destroying capitalist superstructures, SUV's driven into pedestrian areas, trains/buses exploding and when malls/classrooms/jewish centers become shooting ranges - all in the name of allah - it is not the daily commuter with misconceptions Wahhaj and the Islamic Circle of North America need be concerned about.
First things first, Wahhaj and the Islamic Circle of North America have to effectively confront some "misconceptions" of their own.

C&P from "THE RELIGION OF PEACE.COM WEBSITE
Islam is a Religion of Peace
The Myth:
Muhammad was a peaceful man who taught his followers to be the same. Muslims lived peacefully for centuries, only fighting in self-defense when it was necessary. True Muslims would never act aggressively.
The Truth:
Muhammad organized 65 military campaigns in the last ten years of his life and personally led 27 of them. The more power that he attained, the smaller the excuse needed to go to battle, until finally he began attacking tribes merely because they were not part of his growing empire.
After Muhammad’s death, his most faithful followers and even his own family turned on each other almost immediately. There were four Caliphs (leaders) in the first twenty-five years. Three of the four were murdered. The third Caliph was murdered by the son of the first. The fourth Caliph was murdered by the fifth, who left a 100-year dynasty that was ended in a gruesome, widespread bloodbath by descendents of Muhammad’s uncle.
Muhammad’s own daughter, Fatima, and his son-in-law, Ali, who both survived the pagan hardship during the Meccan years safe and sound, did not survive Islam after the death of Muhammad. Fatima died of stress from persecution within three months, and Ali was later assassinated. Their son (Muhammad’s grandson) was killed in battle with the faction that became today’s Sunnis. His people became Shias. The relatives and personal friends of Muhammad were mixed into both warring groups, which then fractured further into hostile sub-divisions as Islam grew.
Muhammad left his men with instructions to take the battle against the Christians, Persians, Jews and polytheists (which came to include millions of unfortunate Hindus). For the next four centuries, Muslim armies steamrolled over unsuspecting neighbors, plundering them of loot and slaves, and forcing the survivors to either convert or pay tribute at the point of a sword.
Companions of Muhammad lived to see Islam declare war on every major religion in the world in just the first few decades following his death - pressing the Jihad against Hindus, Christians, Jews, Zoroastrians, and Buddhists.
By the time of the Crusades (when the Europeans began fighting back), Muslims had conquered two-thirds of the Christian world by the sword, from Spain to Syria, and across North Africa. The Arab slave-trading routes would stay open for 1300 years, until pressure from Christian-based countries forced Islamic nations to declare the practice illegal (in theory).
Today, there is not another religion in the world that consistently produces terrorism in the name of religion as does Islam. The most dangerous Muslims are nearly always those who interpret the Qur’an most transparently. They are the fundamentalists or purists of the faith, and believe in Muhammad’s mandate to spread Islamic rule by the sword, putting to death those who will not submit.
The holy texts of Islam are saturated with verses of violence and hatred toward those outside the faith. In sharp contrast to the Bible, which generally moves from relatively violent passages to far more peaceful ones, the Qur’an travels the exact opposite path. The handful of earlier verses that speak of tolerance are overwhelmed by an avalanche of later ones that carry a much different message. While Old Testament verses of blood and guts are generally bound by historical context within the text itself, Qur'anic imperatives to violence usually appear open-ended.
By any objective measure, the "Religion of Peace" has been the harshest, bloodiest religion the world has ever known.
at July 22, 2008 10:09 AM
Whats that passage in the Koran that talks about the holy month and to stop fighting after which to engage in full course blood bath of infidels?
Also noted by other posters on this site this is one of the ways in which Muslims present Islam to the infidels, first to invite them. Next, if infidels do not accept Islam, infidels must provide protection tax to Muslims. If that is not done then Muslims can continue wholesale massacre of Infidels.
This is step one of the course of action by Muslims. I bet they have had an eye on the NYC subway for a while now. It is prime target for the Mohammedans to inflict great harm to infidels.

I think this is a lovely idea!
May I suggest that the "Islam is peace" logo be set against a backdrop of the WTC burning in the background?
A picture of some of the people leaping from the upper floors of the WTC to their deaths would also be a nice touch, don't you think?

"the holy month of Ramadan..."
-- from the article above
No, it is not "the holy month of Ramadan" despite that use of that fixed phrase in The New York Post and, I notice, in The New Duranty Times. It is merely "Ramadan" to Infidels. No other faith gets such solicitous treatment, where what is believed by the adherents of that faith is described in the precise terms that those adherents, but no one else, yses.
We should not be subject to the drip-drip-drip of what is essentially Muslim propaganda, however unwitting, or rather, having affixed to our daily journalistic lenses the prism of Islam, so that we begin to be mentally acclimated to the idea that yes, indeed yes, it is not merely "Ramadan" but the "holy month of Ramadan." And one also sees much the same thing with the "holy cities of Mecca and Medina." They are not holy to me, or very likely, to you, dear Infidel reader. They can be described, properly, as merely "Mecca and Medina" or, if one insists, as "Mecca and Medina, the two holiest cities for Muslims" or "Mecca and Medina, regarded by Muslims as holy cities."
What is illegitimate, and needs to have exposed and discussed and overturned as in-house style-sheet policy, is the use of epithets accepted only by Muslims and foisted on us, forcing a kind of mental or emotional collaboration we should not be expected to endure.
There is apparently no end to this.
So attention must be paid. Or rather, not merely attention, but something deeper, what can be called "eternal vigilance" -- the same eternal vigilance to be found in that celebrated phrase "eternal vigilance is the price of liberty."
"Ramadan."
Not "the holy month of Ramadan."
Make The New York Post, make The New Duranty Times, aware of your fury at the ease with which their editors have succumbed, and have forced you, the innocent reader, to slowly succumb as well.

This ad is a perfect illustration of the true nature of islam. They say that they are peaceful, yet they put a target on the side of the subway -- "attack here!".
And that is a perfect picture of islam -- just like the song -- "They smile in your face, all the time they want to take your place, the backstabbers."
Islam -- backstabbing everyone since 623!

..............................
Why are people--Americans, for God's sake--always so confused about freedom of speech? Of course someone has the right to advocate becoming a Muslim, or all sorts of other things--but that does not mean they automatically have the right to adspace in the NYC subway to perform that advocacy.
The water is less muddy when it comes to the private sector--although, oddly, many people seem confused here, as well. Put in the simplest terms possible: you have the right to burn the American flag as an expression of freedom of speech, but you do not have a right to burn that flag in my living room. These are part of *my rights*.
In a similar manner, I have freedom of speech to extol the virtues of flag burning. The Local Gazette, as part of its own free speech rights, is *not* obligated to print my editorial. They can if they so wish--they do not have to. In fact, if they were obligated to print my editorial, when the publisher, editor, and the entire staff was applalled by such a view, would be a violation of their own rights of free speech.
The fact that the NYC Subway system is public does somewhat cloud this issue, but not by much. The subway system is not obliged to carry any specific ad. This does not violate "Why Islam"'s freedom of speech--they can still prosletize on any streetcorner.
MzEllen wrote:

MzEllen, the target "ad", with the emphatic "Islam is Peace!!!", is a parody mocked up by Snapped Shot--I think it's quite brilliant.
The actual ads--should they ever run (one hopes not) will be black and white, i the form of a question, i.e.: Q: Islam--A: You Deserve to Know.
Well, they are right--we do deserve to know. But we are unlikely to learn much about the more unpleasant side of Islam from this lot until it is too late.

These ads are extremely offensive, they are infuriating. Imagine for one moment if the Nazis had attacked the US and killed 3000 people, and then promoted Naziism by painting swastikas on subway cars and slogans claiming 'morgen die ganze Welt'- who would put up with that?

Bloomberg did not suddenly become an educated, or cultivated, or wise man, simply because he is a billionaire and his estimated net worth went up the other day by another ten billion. His views on Islam, as seen so far, are dangerously complacent and ill-informed.
It's a widespread problem in the current world, the confusion of wealth with wisdom, or at least with some quality other than the ability to make money. Wealth does not entitle one to immediate respect, if it not combined with intelligence and virtue, and with the ability to learn about things, so as to use that money, and the influence it can buy, for the right and not for the fashionable things, or the things that some adept professional fund-raiser manages to convince you is just the ticket, just the thing for your 501(c)(3) beneficence.

The Islamic Circle of North America was founded
in 1971 by the Muslim Students Association, which is the Muslim Brotherhood. The ICNA is also a counterpart to the Muslim Brotherhood of Pakistan,
Jamaat-e-Islami. The ICNA website was originally a mirror site of JI media (farrukh.net. The ICNA has been tied to the Jamaat charity in Karachi, Al Khidmat Foundation(AKF)--in 2006 AKF sent 6 million rupees ($99,000) to Khaled Mashal, the head of Hamas, something proudly announced by JI and acknowledged by Mashal. At the top of the list of donors (according to the AKF website) were ICNA Relief USA and ICNA Relief Canada. ICNA's Helping Hand is also on the list. Plus, the Al-Khidmat Welfare Society (AKWS), AKF's sister organization, lists ICNA Relief and Helping Hand as "partner" organizations (along with their logos), out of a list of only three organizations, the final one being Muslim Aid UK, a London-based JI charity. (information courtesy of Joe Kaufman).
Why an organization providing material support to a designated terrorist entity is being allowed in this country at all is a good question, but the connection to Hamas (and to the JI which supports the Taliban and whose leader has had meetings with bin Laden) should be enough to get the ads pulled. You'd think. If not they should have to add a footnote to their "Islam is Peace" banner, mentioning all of the above in the name of full disclosure.

I have two issues with this ad campaign.
One, I am highly offended and know that this statement is false, deceptive and pure propaganda.
Two, this is a religious statement and you know if a Christian sign or ad were suggested you would not hear the end of it. As an alternative the Ten Commandments seem in order.
Give them back their stinking money. Although I would be tempted to charge them about the same to remove the offending art. Graffiti looks so much better.

Exodus 20:3-17
Do not worship any other gods besides me.
Do not make idols of any kind, whether in the shape of birds or animals or fish. You must never worship or bow down to them, for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God who will not share your affection with any other god! I do not leave unpunished the sins of those who hate me, but I punish the children for the sins of their parents to the third and fourth generations. But I lavish my love on those who love me and obey my commands, even for a thousand generations.
Do not misuse the name of the Lord your God. The Lord will not let you go unpunished if you misuse his name.
Remember to observe the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. Six days a week are set apart for your daily duties and regular work, but the seventh day is a day of rest dedicated to the Lord your God. On that day no one in your household may do any kind of work. This includes you, your sons and daughters, your male and female servants, your livestock, and any foreigners living among you. For in six days the Lord made the heavens, the earth, the sea, and everything in them; then he rested on the seventh day. That is why the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and set it apart as holy.
Honor your father and mother. Then you will live a long, full life in the land the Lord your God will give you.
Do not murder.
Do not commit adultery.
Do not steal.
Do not testify falsely against your neighbor.
Do not covet your neighbor's house. Do not covet your neighbor's wife, male or female servant, ox or donkey, or anything else your neighbor owns.

Islam isn't complicated at all. EVERYTHING everyone ever needs to know about it can be summed up in 9/11.
What confounds me is when the islamists claim its a religion of peace, ...and then threaten to kill you if you don't convert or pay jizya (and behave like a good dhimmi.)

This looks like the same Orwellian dissembly we've had in the UK for quite some time now (In fact I believe Robert or Hugh have written about it.
I wonder where the money trail leads?

Islam is for the suckers. These SOBs are destroying my country bit by bit. They will pay for this mess. Only if Bush kept his focus tight we won't had to put up with this amount of insults from the degenerate Islamic imams. I wish to ask the President - are you with us?.
I have also run out of the swear word for the Islamic SOBs.

I agree that the ad campaign is obnoxious and infuriating. However, it could provide an opportunity to actually educate people about the (lack of) truth of islam. For example, implementation of the suggestion by Hugh for plastered stickers, with actual quotes by muslims and their so-called prophet, would be instructive. A short politically incorrect documentary, such as those done in the past by Evan Coyne Maloney, would be instructive as well.

For cognitive dissonance, or sticker shock, this hadith quote from bukhari would be interesting alongside siraj wahhaj' propaganda:
Volume 9, Book 89, Number 256:
Narrated Anas bin Malik:
Allah's Apostle said, "You should listen to and obey, your ruler even if he was an Ethiopian (black) slave whose head looks like a raisin."
Allah's apostle described in the Qur'an as: "al-insan al-kamil", the perfect man, and "uswa hasana" -- an excellent model of conduct

The content of the ads themselves is not offensive or suggestive of violence or terrorism, officials said....But the website that the add promotes is very offensive. I read on whyislam.com that:
The word, "Islam" is derived from "Salaam" which means "Peace"...
Women have equal rights under Islam.
Not a single word of the glorious and divine Qur'an has been changed in 1400 years.
Jesus is revered and honored under Islam, but Muhammad doesn't get same treatment under Christianity...so which religion is truly tolerant?

Unfortunately, ladies and gentlemen, freedom of speech is a double edged sword that cuts both ways. Few proper limits should ever exist on freedom of speech. If these subway posters do not step over the line of advocating insurrection or mayhem in the United States, or exceed any of the other similar limitations, it must be allowed.
It must be combated with direct counter arguments and proofs, which themselves face the same limitations not including "political correctness."
A little intellectual honesty is called for here, really.

I live in New York right now, so I wrote to MTA about the ads. This is the response that I got:
We do recognize that some of our customers may find certain advertisements offensive.
As a result, the MTA board enacted advertising guidelines designed to better regulate advertising within the transit system. While some may find certain advertisements offensive, they do not violate the guidelines. Furthermore, please be aware that advertising on our buses and in our subway system fall under the jurisdiction of CBS Outdoor, a private company contracted by MTA Department of Real Estate. As such, we advise you to contact CBS Outdoor in writing with regard to your concerns. Their mailing address is 405 Lexington Avenue, New York , NY 10174. Otherwise you may contact MTA Real Estate directly at 347 Madison Avenue, 8th floor NY 10003.

Are there legal cases setting limits to the Ist Amendment? Could I place ads on MTA trains, or other public places that read for eg ISLAM MEANS WAR or MO WAS INSANE or PROFIT MO SUCKS?
Where are the able graffiti amenders? They could turn the proposed lies into truths!
The US public is not immune to indoctrination; consider the places of intellectual "excellence", the universities!!!

@American.. we started the Religion of Pigs ® a few threads ago. The Divinity we worship is Pigod. The ultimate goal is to convert the black rock in meca into troughs for swine to feed from and rub their hairy backsides on.
