Just watched this story on our local CBS affiliate..Not a single word about the suspect saying "allah" or speaking in Arabic. Just a shocking random attack is what they are reporting. Not that this is comes as a big surprise or anything..

One needs some training to jump into a fight like that, even if it's not a fight at all but some poor kid being pummeled with a hammer. It's not "natural" to come to the aid of a stranger being attacked, even on the subway in a modern American city. One needs training, and one gets that sort of training from being in the military, as an example. The usual citizen just freezes, like the natural person anywhere does. Too bad, but such is life.

The link that 'dag' posted is most interesting: it describes a ‘mentally ill’ Muslim man who behaved as follows, in Vancouver in early August this year, I quote:

“Vancouver police spokeswoman Const. Jana McGuinness said the incident began around 10:20 p.m. [on a Sunday evening] when a man left the Tutti convenience store on Davie without paying for his items.

'After leaving the store, the man headed to the Majestic Restaurant and Lounge on Davie, where he struck a man in the head with a ball-peen hammer, knocking him unconscious.
He then hit a doorman and three patrons with the hammer, before hitting one more person as he left the restaurant.

'Police allege the man then went to Characters Restaurant, just down the street, where he hit two other women in the head.

'A man who was with the two women chased the suspect and tackled him to the ground.

'He [the tackler] was then also struck in the head with the hammer, said McGuinness.” END QUOTE

Note that most people were taken completely by surprise. Of course, we don't know how big the hammer was; maybe it wasn't large, and therefore not easy to see at a distance. And unlike a gun going off, it wouldn't make a noise.

One person tackled the attacker, and got hurt. Maybe three or four tackling him together would have been a better idea - in which case you need enough able-bodied guys in the vicinity to be able to respond if there's someone prepared to yell 'let's go get him!' If there aren't...

I’m not sure what I would have done under such circumstances – being a middle aged housewife, though basically physically fit.

Perhaps the thing to do would be to take cover and, from cover, throw anything small and heavy you can find at the guy to try to distract him from his victim (take care not to hit the victim!) - a full drink can, handful of pebbles, rolled-up umbrella. After all: ok he’s got a hammer, but what if he has a gun too? If he’s yelling ‘allahu akbar’, how do you know he hasn’t got a suicide vest on? In which case, mobbing him/ jumping him mightn't be the best idea - scattering and taking cover is, if you don't have the means to take him out.

Whatever you do: NO terrified screaming. Shouts of 'Fire!' I am told, are best. Or, if you can muster it up, yells of rage NOT fear.

'Undaunted' - I know you have all sorts of useful stuff on your website, but how about some quickie tips right here?

What to do, in a situation like these two hammer attacks, on the subway in Philadelphia, and the one in the streets of Vancouver, if you are

1. a physically fit unarmed citizen (teenager-middle aged) - advice may be different depending on whether person is female or male

2. a not very fit unarmed middle-aged to elderly person - but perhaps carrying umbrella, handbag or walking stick

3. carrying a gun

4. if you are on your own

5. if you have an adult companion (spouse, relative, friend, workmate)

6. if you are a woman or man with a young child (baby to age 7) accompanying you

We all know we are supposed to Do as We Would Be Done By - (which means, in a case like this, help someone who is attacked, just as one would want to be helped ) but few of us, in the fortunate western world, have faced this kind of 'test' of our principles and we 'freeze' when faced with something outside our experience.

Any ideas on how to turn a random crowd of 'sheep' into something a bit more like a purposeful group of Citizens prepared to defend their fellow citizen?

They have allowed themselves to be emasculated and have neither the tools or mindset to defend themselves or the innocent. Like the British have been. Well, the same applies to me, too--basically--and at just 5'2" I'm not all that formidable. Still, I don't think I would just stand by--or run--if I saw a man beating a prone victim with a hammer.

Anyone with a cell phone can call 911. Most subways have station agents, and most are patrolled by either their own police forces or city cops. I once broke up a fight in downtown Oakland--at least five big guys, teens or early twenties--by randomly pointing down the street and yelling "here come the police!" They all scattered. Right after that I went over to the newstand and actually did call the cops.

Of course, I realize that a crazed hammer-wielding Jihadist is likely harder to stop. But the idea that a platform full of riders would do nothing to try to stop this guy *is* part of the problem. I agree with Undaunted and spcbat.

Successful Jihad counts on two things--violent Jihadists and victims who won't fight back. Does anyone know how the victim is doing?

The late great Jeff Cooper, father of the Modern Technique of Pistolcraft, once wrote a small book entitled "Principles of Personal Defense," in which he elucidated seven of the same. The first principle he covered was ALERTNESS. The victim of this attack, dozing with his hearing blocked by an IPod, was in gross violation of said principle. I have personally forestalled several potential attacks simply by being aware of an adversary's attention to me. If they see you know what they're about and are ready for it, prudence will usually prevail.

There are numerous reasons why the average person on a subway train or on the street, or what have you, does nothing in case of emergency. One is the "diffusion of responsibility," the problem of "Oh, I thought you were going to do something." It's real and it's normal. There are leaders in the world because most people cannot act on their own, not without permission from someone or an order from an authority. Leaders are few. If you are one, then you are among the few indeed. Others await you. Don't blame them for not leading. They will likely follow you if you ask.

If there is no leader, most people in a state of shock-- and a hammer attack on a sleeping kid is shocking-- will freeze unless they have some combat training, which no one gets from reading the Internet. One has to practice overcoming shock and moving toward a threat. It takes training and practice to do so at all, and more to become effective even against a paltry threat. By the time people realize they are shocked and have to do something, the threat is either fatal or over. Too late then.

Assuming one will act heroically is a mistake, not quite as harmful a actually trying to be a hero. One might consider doing not the heroic but the small, and not just in cases of violence but in many mundane cases: Each of us on a daily basis can do some tiny thing to hurt jihadis, if only we would think of small rather than melting Mecca; we can hurt jihadis by standing in the doorway of a Muslim jihadi's shop selling illicit goods, for example, deterring customers. Small, small,small. There's danger enough in the small acts to prepare one for anything greater, should that occasion ever arise.

Do the smallest thing possible. Lead in the smallest effort, and someday, perhaps, there will be an occasion to do some great thing. Then you might be ready to be heroic. Then you can lead others who would otherwise freeze and do nothing at all. Think small. Small. Really small.

gravenimage, skevin - good thinking! The reason the oldest tricks in the trade are the oldest tricks is because, most of the time, they work. Even a doddering old guy or little old lady could do *that*. And even if it doesn't completely work - if it just distracts the attacker for a moment, that moment might be enough for someone else bigger and fitter to make a move.

The guy who supervised my PhD, once thwarted a mugging that was happening in the street outside his inner city residence, by leaning out the window and yelling in angry tones, at the top of his voice, 'Hey, Fred! Bill! George! Come on let's get 'em'!' (or something to that effect). The mugger didn't wait to find out whether the boys being summoned were real or not - he bolted.

gravenimage - you asked how the victim is doing.

Given that the really interesting part of the testimony comes from the victim himself - "Taylor told Action News last week that all throughout the attack, the man kept chanting something, and he distinctly recalled the word "Allah."" - I'd say he's physically not too bad.

And - dag - great advice. It's about building a certain habit of mind. The jihad-minded Muslims work themselves up, day after day, year after year, into a habit of hate and aggression. Well, it looks like we kafir have to start actively training ourselves into habits of civic responsibility, caring for each other, willingness to stick up for each other.

I can only add: no harm in any of us who haven't yet done so, signing up - with our families - for 1. basic self-defence 2. first aid and 3. bodies such as 'Neighbourhood Watch'.

A young pregnant woman, say, who can't physically intervene in an attack, can still save lives afterward if she has basic first aid training.

A gun, a knife, knuckles, chair, anything handy. People need to decide AHEAD OF TIME that they are willing to defend themselves and others from danger. The guy was in "Condition White" (or as I call it white-out). On a bus or subway, I'd be at least yellow, maybe red. My husband is well trained in firearms, me martial arts. The MIND needs to be conditioned to respond. I've been attacked; I responded. I don't wear heels, I stay alert, I position myself well, carry when I feel the need. My husband has been threatened; his training and cool head saved him a pipe-beating and me a trip to the morgue.

I live in the Philadelpia suburbs, where even here, it has become more and more common to see women in hijab shopping at Target and Shop Rite.
Driving through Philadelphia recently, it was downright startling to see a black American woman in full Burqa!
When a mosque opened up a few years ago in Yardley (central Bucks County, middle class white, mostly Christian and Jewish), it was applauded in the local newspapers that we have a "home for Islam here" inside an abandoned Christian church, I add.

I have been claiming for a long time that Islam creates psychotic episodes in believers...believers keep proving me right.

intervene physically if called for.
This is not always a good idea, but it is also something you don't stand around thinking about, you just do it. In my checkered careers, I have disarmed a number of people, knives, even guns.
Many times I have been inches from being murdered.
I am still here because I am hard to kill.
But oh how they tried.

In a group of hesitant people, if one person
tries to prevent the mayhem, others will usually jump in. But no one wants to be first, or go it alone. You have to be prepared that the attacker is going to turn on you, which he will if you give him a chance. So the best thing is to not give him a chance.
This is very dangerous work, if you don't think you are up to it, don't try it alone, or you will be victim #2. It is best to act in a group, or not at all, only King Kong can take down some of these people alone...

Police have apprehended a man in a mental institution in the hammer attack on a sleeping Philadelphia subway rider.

Investigators say that family members called police to identify the suspect. Police released surveillance video showing the attacker pulling a hammer from a backpack and assaulting a man dozing in a nearby seat.

The suspect apparently tried to hurt himself with the hammer following the attack early Thursday. Family members say they were not initially aware of the attack, but had the suspect committed to the mental institution. He was taken into custody Tuesday night.

The hammer-attack victim, 20-year-old Dewayne Taylor, has been released from a hospital. He says he has no idea who the attacker is or why he was targeted.

The puzzling case - which police sources described as the random work of a mentally unstable man - almost drew to a close yesterday.The sources said that the suspect, whom they wouldn't identify - a bearded, husky, 5-foot-9 black man in his 30s - surrendered to a local mental institution in the morning.

Even the victim is changing his story:

"I didn't notice anybody," Taylor said. "I was in my own world, just tired from work. I don't even know if he said anything [during the attack] because my headphones were on."

Fortunately, we have video reports that have the victim saying something very incriminating about the SJS attacker's Arabic words in other reported video which is documented on a variety of blogs.

The authorities never identify a muslim suspect by name. Just as the msm rarely reports the cry of "allah" during the attack.

"Something. Allah something, I'm not too sure. All I know it Arabic. I don't know when he did it"

They've learned to claim insanity as a defense by running to the funny farm right after their attacks.

This is why we must not give them that defense in our comments here or anywhere else.

We should send all the Muslims to 'funny farm' internment camps. I forgot to add that carrying a corkscrew is also a good idea. That's how I get away with having a knife on campus. I use it to cut the crossword out of the paper, but both the knife end and the corkscrew end could come in handy.

A guy tried to attack me once when I was 20 or 21 and living in Texas. He wasn't too bright because he knew I had my keys in my hand, as I was standing in front of one of those big, free-standing mailboxes outside my apartment. When he jumped out at me, which he did in front of me, not behind me, I put my car key through his cheek until I hit tooth. I think I might have taken his tooth out too. The sucky part was that the cops took away my keys as 'evidence,' but the guy did get locked up, because he went to the ER.

Ever since then I've carried mace, and I've started carrying a taser in recent years. It's ironic I think that tiny women like me are more likely to be prepared and respond if something like what happened in this story takes place. I sense evil/crazy when it enters a room. And I would respond in the face of it.

The diffusion of responsibility is a real phenomenon. Near the beginning of 'America Alone' Mark Steyn talks about an incident in which 4 'youths' in Brussels got on a bus and beat the driver to death while everyone walched, and only 3 people gave police reports. Nobody testified. People can do something. Would it be worth macing the driver and the whole front of the bus to stop a murder? Hell yeah it would.

Something the Russians advised after Beslan was that cops responding to such an event here should be mentally prepared and trained to shoot through hostages if necessary, to not stall an attack while waiting for the perfect head-shot, like on TV.

I'm not suggesting any private armed citizen should take that advice.

So, yes, it would be worh macing the driver and passengers to stop a murder, seems to me.

Pepper Spray? Tasers? Wrong answer. First, you must believe that the guy with the hammer DESERVES TO SUFFER. You must WANT to hear him scream in pain. Do you still not believe that this is life or death? Where were you when Bernard Getz shot those thugs on the subway all those years ago...how about Collin Ferguson, the Long Island Train killer? September 11th is tomorrow...let us remember the first person murdered...a female flight attendant who had her throat cut right in front of everyone. Then let us remember all those who were burned or crushed to death, as well as all the brave servicemen who have also passed to the great beyond...to protect me. the beaten subway rider has been victimized again -- this time by a petty thief. Someone picked up that phone and sold it on the street for about $150. That was caught on videotape as well, sources told Fox 29 News.

The alleged thief is seen on a surveillance tape after the 20-year-old beating victim, Dewayne Taylor, and his alleged attacker, 26-year-old Thomas Scantling, tumbled onto a SEPTA platform.

I think maybe my muslim brothers have taken up hammers because explosives have proved to be a self limiting enterprise for them. Bad idea bringing a hammer to a gun fight. The next one will likely end with a bullet if it is undertaken in a "red state" where folks still have the means to defend themselves.
