Jihadists: We'll kill Paul McCartney if he plays Israel

1969lifemagazine.jpg
Paul: Not a dead man

This story takes me back to misspent nights of my youth, gathered with friends to spin The White Album backwards on a turntable (ask your parents what that thing was, kids) and hearing John Lennon saying, or seeming to say, "Paul is a dead man. Miss him, miss him, miss him." But Paul McCartney is still not dead, and he is showing some moral courage here in the face of jihadist threats.

"We’ll Kill Sir Paul If He Plays Israel," by Dennis Rice in the Sunday Express, September 14 (thanks to Kyros):

SIR Paul McCartney has been threatened that he will be the target of suicide bombers unless he abandons plans to play his first concert in Israel.

When you were young, and your heart was an open book, you used to say live and let live. But in this ever changing world in which we live in, makes you give in and cry -- live and let die...

Self-styled preacher of hate Omar Bakri claimed the former Beatle’s decision to take part in the Jewish state’s 60th anniversary celebrations had made him an enemy of all Muslims.

Such a mean old man.

Sources said Sir Paul was shocked but refused to be intimidated.

He never listens to them. He knows that they're the fools.

In an interview with Israeli media yesterday he said: “I was approached by different groups and political bodies who asked me not to come here. I refused. I do what I think and I have many friends who support Israel.”

I get by with a little help from my friends,
I get high with a little help from my friends,
I'm gonna try with a little help from my friends.

Sir Paul, 65, should have gone to Israel with the Beatles in 1965 but they were barred by the Jewish nation’s government over fears they would corrupt young people.

Always shouts out something obscene. Such a dirty old man...

Yesterday a number of websites described him as an infidel and suggested he was going to Israel only because of the reported £2.3m fee for the one-off concert.

Give me money. That's what I want.

A message posted on one website said: “Shame on you Paul McCartney for day trippin’ to apartheid Israel” and vowed never to buy his music again.

I'm gonna let you down,
And leave you flat,
Because I told you before, oh,
You can't do that.

Bakri, who made his weekly internet broadcast to fellow extremists from his home in Lebanon, where he has lived in exile since being banned from returning to Britain, said Sir Paul was “making more enemies than friends”.

Bakri: You'll get yours yet, however big you think you are.

Syrian-born Bakri, 48, went on: “I heard today that the pop star Paul McCartney is playing as a part of the celebrations....

I heard the news today, oh boy, about a lucky man who made the grade.

Stay safe Sir Paul.

Hiya Folks,,

The White Album is my favourite.

These people are just everything negative. Kill whatever doesn't think or do like you. It's a sad savage way to live life. No wonder so many embrace death,, living is just too intolerable for them.

I wonder, if it's a karmic retribution on a global scale,, that puts all these souls in such abject misery and hate. Islam could very well be,, hell on earth??

I must apologize for my sillyness last night, on Robert's awesome Let it Be,, thread,, I was making up wacky anti-jihad spell titles.

My friend

(whose bud,, stones with little rocks),

and me got going about the Jinns,, these people snot outta their noses 5 times a day, in ablution, and I kinda got carried away.

I can't imagine living life,, with such hate for everything. Or be so weak, and afraid of living to have such a savage mind/body/life control over them. To give up even free will, to the evil men that run islam.

They are so twisted they even put sex on tomatoes and cucumbers. That is INSANE, to see sex in veggies!!

Everyday, I shake my head,, with all the crazy crap these fools rant and rave about.

From the article:

"" A message posted on one website said: “Shame on you Paul McCartney for day trippin’ to apartheid Israel” and vowed never to buy his music again.""

"Apartheid Israel??!" Um, please 'splain how Isreal is Apartheid? Especially when compared to the number of Jooose in Saudia Arabia, problems with religious identification cards in Egypt, and gays in Iran.

Apartheid Israel? Too bad the rest of the Middle East doesn't have the same "apartheid" policies as Israel.

These "people" truly are evil--down to the very core of their tiny, putrid souls.

This is all they know how to do: threaten, kill, destroy, and intimidate. That's all they exist for.

And when it suits their means, they yell and scream and demand concessions, and recognition and services like a spoiled brat who didn't get his piece of candy before dinner.

At the very least normal criminals, unlike jihadists, have a certain degree of honesty when they commit their crimes. Normal criminals don't claim to commit their crimes because it was the "right" thing to do.

Jihadists, on the other hand, conceive, and act out their vile, heinous crimes in the name of their demonic lord allah.

One can only imagine what this planet would be like if these folks actually channeled their energy into something positive and constructive instead of the pig crap they rant on about.

What a total and complete waste of humanity.

ROBERT: "This story takes me back to misspent nights of my youth, gathered with friends to spin The White Album backwards on a turntable...and hearing John Lennon saying, or seeming to say, "Paul is a dead man. Miss him, miss him, miss him." "

If this is a reference to Revolution #9, then John appears to be saying "Turn me on dead man."

I was always a "John" guy...because of his raspy scream-singing (Dizzy Miss Lizzy, Slow Down, etc)...and the depth of his lyricism (Strawberry Fields and Happiness is Warm Gun among many others). When the Beatles broke up, I remember buying into the line that Paul was the bad guy.

As the years have gone by and I've accumulated a little more wisdom, and technological advances have allowed us to access old interviews with the Beatles, I've come to realize John was a fruitcake whose world-view vacillated between adolescent and infantile (has anyone heard the latest audio, where he talks of the desire to have sex with his mother?).

Don't get me wrong, I still love his music, but I've developed a real appreciation for what Paul might have had to endure in all those years of his association with John. Needless to say, their musical collaboration was extraordinary.

After 9-11, Paul spent a month in America, attending Yankees games and offering his support to our grief-stricken nation. The man is fantastic.

am having a crisis.

i thought the album (played backward) said, "Paul is dead now," not "Paul is a dead man."

i no longer have the album. or a turntable.

Cornelius,

If this is a reference to Revolution #9, then John appears to be saying "Turn me on dead man."

No, I was referring to the mumbling at the end of "I'm So Tired," played backwards.

Right. Mr. Billioniare needs the cash.

I'm surprised that Paul was "shocked," however, by the Mohammedans' supremacist and menacing behavior. Isn't he aware of what's going on in the world?

Yeah,, big time. If our civilization didn't have to spend the kazillions protecting all of us from them,,

if they learned to read,, learned the truth, and threw away their pervo mullahs and brainwashing.

They actually suck positive white energy with all their crap and ruin it. (tsunami relief effort)

I worked that rescue,, pisses me off all the work us white light workers did,, most of it went to fund more brainwashing at madrassas and jihad.

They are holding us back, from reaching out to other worlds,, they are holding us back from making this planet healthy and whole, they are holding us back from saving species from going extinct,,

all the effort we have to take to protect ourselves from this,, it's outrageous,, I resent it,,

And we are still pissed off they smashed up the pagan arabians idols, at the kabaa,, then they stole the kabaa too,, they are destroyers of everything beautiful and LIFE affirming.

They are the perfect representation of BAD KARMA!!!!!

just pure unrelenting hate, perversion and decay.

I just don't understand why people who lived free, would willingly convert and live such a hateful non-existance.

boggles my mind,,,

£2.3m ain't chicken feed when you have an ex-wife and kids to support. Maybe the Muslims can match that or do one better.

Posted by: Mystical Time Traveler [TypeKey Profile Page] at September 13, 2008 9:54 PM

I read a few years ago that when Paul was recording Band on the Run in Nigeria (1970s), one day he brought his little daughter to a public swimming area and wanted to have her swim naked but the people told him this was forbidden, and he was dumbstruck because she was only a toddler. Wonder if it was a Muslim area.

Posted by: DenverRodeo [TypeKey Profile Page] at September 13, 2008 9:56 PM

Mystical, the ex-wife got a settlement. He doesn't support her anymore. Also, only one daughter, toddler Beatrice, requires financial support from Paul.

Robert,

The "miss him, miss him, miss him" immediately made me think of 'I'm So Tired'...but I had no idea there was a "Paul is a dead-man" quote. I suddenly miss my turntable.

Recently, I sent a collection of culled articles from here and elsewhere - as I periodically do - to friends and family, hoping to raise the level of awareness.

My older bro, a bona-fide flower child who actually went to Woodstock, wrote me back that he thought "love and peace are the answer".

I was so disappointed.

Him and I were very close growing up; we partied hard and shared many-a-joint of Red Bud. But his world-view today crystallizes the naivety of that era. When I think of the 60s and 70s, I think of the drug abuse that fogged so many minds (including my own) and took so many lives (including my sister), the sexual freedom that brought us an epidemic of STDs and unwanted pregnancies and that culminated in the AIDS tragedy,...and the utterly misplaced idealism of pacifism and multiculturalism that have done so much to undermine our identity and fortitude as a nation.

I've begun to believe that the ONLY good to come out of the sixties was the music.

Posted by: Cornelius [TypeKey Profile Page] at September 13, 2008 10:04 PM

OT, something cool to do, when you get sick of the 7th century ideologie's crap,, cos,, it's the same ol'crap,, day in and day out. They are so consistenty hateful and TROLL like,, the gollums of real life. The stuff of bogeymen and nightmares,, bummer is they are REAL!!!

Jihadists: We'll kill Paul McCartney...
..........................................

Well, Islam was like this from the very beginning. How many poets did Mohammed have killed? Asma bint Marwan comes to mind, and the two slave girls who at the request of their master sang satirical verses about Mo. Then there were the bans on pictures, and sculpture, and musical instruments.

How many artists have been threatened in the past few years? Salman Rushdie, most famously, with one of his translators murdered and an editor stabbed, and bookstores that carried "the Satanic Verses" firebombed; Nobel prize-winning novelist Naguib Mahfouz stabbed; filmakers Theo van Gogh and Ayaan Hirsi Ali, he brutally murdered and she under such severe death threat that she had to step down from the Dutch parliament; cartoonist Kurt Westergaard and the rest of the MoToon artists and their publisher Fleming Rose under threat; Lars Viik of MoDoggie fame, actress Sienna Miller, sundry Western female pop stars contemplating appearances in the Muslim world, and now Sir Paul.

Most of them have been threatened for the content of their work, and a few for their "insufficiently modest" appearances, or for associating with people Islamists disapprove of, as with McCartney.

This doesn't even address all the others--who censor themselves out of fear of Islam, such as Random House's pulling Sherry Jones' "The Jewel of Medina", and that German opera with the mask of Mohammed shut down amid threats of violence, and all the cringeing disavowals of Denmark over the Motoons, and the Netherlands over Geert Wilders' "Fitna", and British artist Grayson Perry, who said "I've censored myself. The reason I haven't gone all out attacking Islamism in my art is because I feel real fear that someone will slit my throat."

This is just off the top of my head--except for the Grayson Perry quote, I didn't look up a single thing.

I'm sick of it. Here we have this wealth of creativity--singing, songwriting, painting, cartooning, playwriting, filmaking, prose, poetry--and radical Islam's only thought is threats of death and destruction. They represent nothing but pure nihilism.

Good for Paul McCartney. More artists have to stand up against this insanity.

Posted by: gravenimage [TypeKey Profile Page] at September 13, 2008 11:12 PM

I also want to add a song to the list, Lady Mohamed and of course Blackbeard eternally howling in the dead of night. Anything, everything in life that brings joy is haram in this insane death cult. Maybe that is what drove them insane, having nothing enjoy at all, just all these stupid rules to regulate your life 24/7.

If the Mohammedans did that, then the whole world will truly know that they, Mohammedans, are insane.

Paul is playing Israel?

Yeah! Yeah! Yeah!

Posted by: give me doughnuts [TypeKey Profile Page] at September 14, 2008 12:18 AM

I think I read in "blogging the Koran" that mohammed executed a few poets because they ridiculed him. I don't hink Sir Paul has ridiculed Mo yet, but wouldn't it be rich if he did? It seems they've put a price on his head just in case.

Another irony is that in another era ANOTHER one of the most vile cults claimed that the white album was the catalyst for their heinous acts.

Maybe the Iraqi "bob dylan" can warm up for Sir Paul?

Posted by: charlie [TypeKey Profile Page] at September 14, 2008 2:31 AM

Also this makes the decision to play "Let it Be"
at the 9-11 memorial a lot more palatable. Some paranoid islamics probably think it was planned that way.

Posted by: joeblough [TypeKey Profile Page] at September 14, 2008 2:41 AM

Posted by: Papa Whiskey [TypeKey Profile Page] at September 14, 2008 3:05 AM

If Sir Paul goes ahead with this gig in Israel, defying the threats from the Mohammedans, then he will indeed have *earned* the right to be called a Knight. And we can put his name in the pot for Anti-Dhimmi 2008 (Performing Arts Division).

A further thought: these are testing times, and just as in the 1930s and 1940s, those who will rise to the challenge and step forward to stand with the House of Israel, ignoring the Big Lies, defying all the forces of evil, will sometimes be people that no-one expected.

Cornelius, like you, I was always a fan of John, but "...(A)s the years have gone by and I've accumulated a little more wisdom, ... I've come to realize John was a fruitcake whose world-view vacillated between adolescent and infantile..." Not unlike a rather substantial portion of the 60s generation, in retrospect. Paul was always the level headed one, comparatively speaking.

Be safe in Israel, Paul.

Living is easy with eyes closed
Misunderstanding all you see
It's getting hard to be someone but it all works out
It doesn't matter much to me

I've always been a fan of George and Paul. I never cared much for John, because of his Leftist activism, and his advocacy for some murderer's (forget his name) release, although I did consider Lennon's murder a crime. However, Sir Paul, with his criticism of the US for 'squandering the post 9/11 goodwill' by going to Iraq, did lose it with me. George will always be my favorite due to his philantropic pursuits like Romania's orphans (okay, I disagreed with him on Bangladesh, but I guess in 1971, who could have blamed him?), and steering clear of political controversies. I just wish all the Beatles had steered clear off narcotics.

Mr. Spencer, when I think of islam I think of the Beetle song: Helter Skelter. Remember the one from the time of Charles Manson. Manson was convicted with his followers of breaking into a house in Beverly Hills murdering Tate/LaBianca and scribbling on the house walls with blood of their victims the word pig. Manson had a cult that wanted to precipitate an apocalyptic war between himself as messiah and the rest of the world.

The murderous Charlie was endearingly referred to by his followers as "Charlie is love." Yeah, Charlie is love. Notice Charlie’s cult showed some similarities with the cult of islam. He referred to non followers as pigs. He sought their blood for a ritual murder to a higher force. He like Mohammed dominated his followers and deluded them into believing a homicidal maniac was love itself! Sir Paul, perhaps while in the Middle East you can dedicate a rendition of Helter Skelter to Mohammed.

Kudos to Paul for playing in Israel and defying these barbarians.

Wasn't there also a message played backwards at the end of Sgt Peppers?

Infidel Pride: As far as I know, none of the Beatles indulged in narcotics ie opiates...except perhaps John, probably because he had more personal pain and rage to deal with. They ingested other substances without which classic songs like 'Strawberry Fields Forever'...which you quote...would not have been created.

Posted by: johndoe [TypeKey Profile Page] at September 14, 2008 7:50 AM

As we have seen, music is haram to rigid Islam.

Paul is a high priest of Haram because of his popularity and history of haram music.
He deserves to be killed even if he never appears in Israel...or so think the depraved and demented.

Islam is the denial of nearly all things humans are attracted to. Humans are naturally attracted to music. This is why it is almost impossible to not tap your foot to some kinds of music or shut your eyes and be carried away by others. Every culture and tribe developed music and instruments, if only drums. Music is historically popular, even the angels sing to Allah.

But Allah is jealous, he wants to keep music for himself and deprive his muslims of it.
So the serious among them try to wipe music out.
For everyone if possible. If Elvis were alive they would threaten him also, to kill the Kuffir King of Music, would make Allah very happy.

But Elvis was in heaven a half hour before Iblis found out he was dead, so muslims can't do anything about him. But Paul they can at least threaten. Kill him even better.

Paul is a good man for not letting threats throw him off...Beatlemania forever...

Put that in your pipe and smoke it Allah...

How do you spell insanity? I S L A M.....

Posted by: flowerknife_us [TypeKey Profile Page] at September 14, 2008 8:42 AM

Darcy: The Finsbury Mosque is not in his part of town and he is very unlikely to venture to that area. And I can't imagine him reading this site. Perhaps this brouhaha over his concert in Israel will awaken him to what his civilisation is up against. I suspect he's unaware of the reality of Islamic supremacism. I hope he doesn't sing Let It Be in Israel. It's inappropriate now and it would appeal too much to the Peace Now traitors and appeasers there.
I think he does inhabit a comfortable insulated world. With that kind of money, who wouldn't? £180 million!! I'm reminded of a Dylan line 'I'm helpless as a rich man's child' not to mention the camel through the eye of a needle.

Posted by: johndoe [TypeKey Profile Page] at September 14, 2008 8:43 AM

"Let it be" are the words Mary spoke when the angel Gabriel came to tell her of her impregnation by the holy spirit (God). Since Jews do not believe that Jesus is the Son of God, perhaps Paul would leave "Let It Be" out of his repetoire in Israel. I don't know, what do others think?

"Perhaps this brouhaha over his concert in Israel will awaken him to what his civilisation is up against. I suspect he's unaware of the reality of Islamic supremacism." --johndoe

I hope you're right. Sir Paul McCartney, former Beatle, would be a HUGE ally in the fight against Islamic supremacism.

Whereas John Lennon, were he alive, would probably be on the side of Islam. What do others think?

Ditto. We have a large toad in our garden, and I have a terra cotta "toad house" for him (don't know if he uses it, lol!) I often see him sitting in a big pot of purslane, or in the small yellow rose pot. He likes to be watered a bit with the hose. I really enjoy seeing him as I water, very relaxing, and a good tonic to get away from all of the Mohammedan nightmare that is happening.

I think of Mr. Toad of Toad Hall in "The Wind in the Willows."

Me too. Lefties of the world, unite!

What would happen to us under Islam? The medievals were afraid of people who used the left hand. I knew a woman who had her left arm tied to her side to force her to write with the right hand. By the time I went to Catholic school, that was over and done with.

"John Lennon, were he alive, would probably be on the side of Islam. What do others think?"
Posted by: darcy

I think he will be turning in his grave at the mere suggestion.

Lennon hated ALL religions equally for their ability to divide humanity.

The idea that he would have any time, never mind support, for the most divisive religion of them all is well wide of the mark and misses the point entirely of what he believed in as a humanist.

"Imagine there's no heaven
It's easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us only sky
Imagine all the people
Living for today...

Imagine there's no countries
It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people
Living life in peace... "

Amen to that, John.

Posted by: Rab [TypeKey Profile Page] at September 14, 2008 12:34 PM

Darcy and Zena,
I don't know if John would be on the side of Islam but I'm pretty sure he would be on the side of the Palestinians and would be excusing their violence. I see him as more of an enabler. It's a trademark of the Left. They are anti-establishment. They weren't afraid to speak up against Western governments so why are they afraid to speak up against Muslim governments that are brutal with their citizens? Many in the upper echelons of the Left have a lot to lose (certainly more than I do), which makes their silence all the more difficult to comprehend.
So where is Yoko now? Why is she keeping quiet? Does she think she wouldn't be affected?
How about Prince Charles? Does he think he'll be king if England is taken over and put under sharia? Will his queen and any female members of the family be allowed out in public without their hijab?

Paul's last wife, Heather Mills, was previously married to a British "businessman" named Alfie Karmal (a Muslim? -- "Alfie, the son of a Greek mother and Palestinian father"). According to Karmal in an interview, during their 2-year marriage, "his former wife had been a 'party girl' entertaining rich Arab men and was, unknown to him, the mistress of a Lebanese multi-millionaire during their five-year on-off relationship."

Those who still have a turntable (or can playback mp3 in reverse mode), the specific lyric ("Revolution #9" from the White Album) is the phrase, "NUMBER NINE" which is spoken by John several times throughout the track.

"NUMBER NINE" backwards sounds roughly like, "Nern me-on reb-mun" which, with a little imagination can resemble, "turn me on dead-man".

Also listen to Led Zep's "Stairway to Heaven" the lyrics, "It's just a s(pring clean for the May queen)" and you will hear, "six six six"

You could be right, darcy. But, except for a few old farts out there who collect Golden Oldies, the 60s and 70s anti-war hippie mind set the Beatles spoke to barely exists any more, at least not in the form it did back then. They are from a time when no one could possibly have conceived that the centuries old battle with Islam would flare up again. The hippies' world view was basically atheistic-socialist, which does not provide the tools for analyzing religiously motivated social forces. It would be good if Paul McCartney would take up the cause of Western culture, but I can't honestly see him doing it. Would be delighted to be proved wrong, though.

"It would be good if Paul McCartney would take up the cause of Western culture, but I can't honestly see him doing it. Would be delighted to be proved wrong, though."

Perhaps you forget that within days of the attacks on 9/11, McCartney flew to New York City to perform a song he wrote especially for the occasion -- "Freedom".

I like the lyrics, though they don't mention Islam or anything specific, they are quite relevant to the situation:

Freedom

This is my right
A right given by God
To live a free life
To live in freedom

Talkin' about freedom
I'm talkin' 'bout freedom
I will fight
For the right
To live in freedom

Anyone tries to take it away
They'll have to answer
'Cause this is my right

DenverRodio, I had forgotten about that. Thanks for the reminder. It would be good if in the intervening seven years since 9/11 he has taken the same journey of educating himself about Islam that many others have. Is there any indication that he has? (Just asking - I don't know).

OT but applicable to the White Album:

We did the White Album widdershins thing in my psychology class, in high school. (The Beatles were just a little before my time, but not by much.) Anyhow, we did it when we were studying about subliminal messages.

I had no problem, earlier in the semester, handling the boa (phobias), but the White Album thing, while it is of course only an oddity, had the power to give me chills. But then, so do alleged recordings of ghost voices.

My great grandmother, who "cured" me of my lefthandedness, would spin in her grave, if she knew how impressionable I can be.

Unlikely that John would be "pro-Islam" given his anti-religion, feminist stance and not sure he would be pro-Palestinian despite his dalliance with leftist causes. He did after all write the lines "If you go carryin' pictures of Chairman Mao you ain't gonna make it with anyone anyhow"

Merry Meet Abscedere!!

It's very interesting that you ask this question!!!

Actually we had just this discussion years back in our Global White Light Group.

We are the group that does the 2 daily 11:11's, and is tracked by the Princeton Mass Consciousness Lab.

We even put it to a poll, with other Reiki/Light Workers, Covens, Shamanistic groups, and other LOA workers.

We ran this poll for about 5 years to get good data on other's feelings about trying to knock down the power of Global Islam, through psychic energy.

(and you know as well as me,, at how BLACK and hateful, and HEAVY the psychic energy is, emanating from the medieval east)

In my own group, we put it to a vote and made it part of our rules of conduct.

We need to focus our enegies, on the Planet as a Whole.

It is a waste of psychic energy to try to drill into just ONE problem on this planet *even though jihad is the biggest problem*,

We need to heal the whole planet.

The karma generated by jihad, on innocents, creates more bad energy and it just reflects back on itself.

So,, my darling one,, send your white light and the power of the universe to this tiny blue dot,,

called Mother Earth.

Wrap your loving light, all the way around the equator of this planet, a belt of loving positive energy, and give it all ya got!

Join us at the 2 times in the day, 11:11,, in your time zone,, and send your light to our Goddess, to heal the sick minds that are dimming HER LIFE FORCE!!

It's just that the Qur'an, like the Kaaba, is so black, it would probably take a million years to fade it to grey.

I suppose you're right, though, about sending out white light to the world entire. It's been a while since I was a practicing Wiccan. (LOL...I got lonely and joined the Episcopal church, where I rarely attend the services, much as I enjoy them.)

Yepp,, agreed Abscedere,

That is the logic behind why we focus on the "blue dot".

And the Kaaba, USED to be a place of worship, joy and celebration of life for 100's of years, if not 1,000's. Of course,, that's before the muslims, smashed the idols,, insulted, and then murdered, the noble arabian pagans,,

This reminds me almost exactly of a tale of long ago.

Back in the nineteen-thirties, the most famous and best-paid musician in the world was the classical conductor, Arturo Toscanini. He was also an implacable enemy of Fascism and Nazism who had gone into exile from his dearly beloved country rather than bow to Mussolini (whom he knew personally).

In 1937, Toscanini offered to conduct the newly formed Palestine Philharmonic - now the Israel Philharmonic - in yet another poke in the eyes of Nazis and FAscists everywhere. The orchestra was barely able to support itself and certainly could not afford the living legend's enormous fees; but when that issue was delicately mentioned, the answer was - tush, tush, who ever said anything about money? Maestro Toscanini will conduct for free.

What is more, when the living legend came, he surprised - and even worried - the orchestra, by keeping his legendary temper under complete check for two days straight. When, on the third day, there was an eruption, some players actually felt relieved: thank God, he was now treating them just like any other orchestra.

The impecunious Philharmonic showed its gratitude by voting Toscanini a lifetime supply of Jaffa oranges.

Israel: the place where people prove that they mean what they say about freedom. Especially great musicians.

Paolo - what a wonderful story! Can you give us the source?

At this point I believe it appropriate to cite a very striking passage from John Roy Carlson's "From Cairo to Damascus".

After posing as a sympathiser with Arab/ Muslims and Nazis and spending months inside Arab Muslim ranks observing them during the period 1947-48 (except for one brief interlude in besieged Jerusalem), Carlson decided to enter Israel itself in his own persona, from Cyprus, immediately after the end of the war.

This is how he describes the voyage.

p. 450.
“I want to go to Israel”, I told Rabbi Schreibaum suddenly [this was in Nicosia, in Cyprus].

'He smiled, as if no request could be a surprise to him.

'"The HaTikvah is leaving for Haifa on Thursday with a group of immigrants. Why don’t you go along?’

'“I have no visa for Israel, and my passport is full of Arab stamps”, I said.

'“When you get to Haifa just tell them I sent you.”

"The Hatikvah grossed eight hundred tons and was formerly an American coast guard cutter.

"When it left Famagusta two days later, it was loaded with capacity with two hundred and eighty Jews and an American [i.e. Carlson himself].

"They were an ill-clad, ill-fed lot of refugees. Many were survivors of Auschwitz who bore their death number tattooed above their wrists.

"Most were from southern Europe – Rumania, Hungary, and Bulgaria. I had expected to find them elated at their homecoming. But there was no elation. Pain, hunger and frustration had been their lot for a decade and they were benumbed.

"'Among the bedraggled children a half dozen carried violin cases.

"I thought it significant that these harassed Jews thought of music as well as survival; at no time during my stay among the Arabs had I seen anybody with a violin, or with any musical instrument of any kind.

‘Nor had I ever seen so many wash-tubs as on the Hatikvah.

"All that a family owned was dumped into the tubs, which also served as cribs, for invariably on top of every well-packed tub was an infant.

" It was usually tended by its father; the mothers, exhausted, were asleep on the double-decked cots jamming every inch of space on the decks. These infants were the gifts the wanderers who had been through the torture-chambers of Europe were bringing to Israel.”

Violin-cases and babies. Music and life. People who had been through the bottomless abyss of the Shoah and the purgatory of the Displaced Persons camps - and they *still* had somehow preserved, or obtained, musical instruments, they had *still* mustered enough energy, enough hope, to create children. (The most haunting story I ever heard was of a Jewish couple who had seven children, before the War; during the Shoah the family were separated, and all seven children were murdered by the Nazis; the husband and wife survived and miraculously found each other and went to eretz Israel - and there, to their astonishment, discovered that HaShem was blessing them with Child Number Eight).

Note also Carlson's very telling remark about the Muslim milieu in which he had been immersed for months on end: "at no time during my stay among the Arabs had I seen anybody with a violin, or with any musical instrument of any kind".

(And note that those Jewish husbands were tending their babies so that their wives could sleep - whereas Carlson had observed, in the Arab world, an appalling lack of care both for women and for children - indeed, he had seen not just neglect, but gross cruelty).

Dumbledoresarmy: my source for the story of Arturo Toscanini and the Palestine Philharmonic was Norman Lebrecht's The Maestro Myth. Lebrecht is a nasty little man who likes to belittle all his subjects, but he does know an incredible amount of gossip, and in the case of Toscanini even he has to admit that the fiery old man put his money - repeatedly - where his mouth was.

Being a McCartney Fan for years upon Years..
im a bit lost over this whole israel concert!
If safety is a big concern, and death threats were made by crazy muslims.

maybe Paul should rethink and cancle the show
and tour somewhere diffrent! why take a chance!
life is too short already, his fans love him and his music.. God knows we have already lost George
and John !

isnt that enough already!! live and let live !

if Sir Paul goes, choosing deliberately to say Lan Astaslem to the jihadists, and to stick his neck out in support of Israel (at a time when many in the UK are being seduced by a resurgent antisemitism), and if the jihadists do in fact kill him for it, then I will say: he did right, and he will have made his Knighthood actually *mean* something, and he will be remembered among the Righteous.

"Once to every man and nation
comes the moment to decide
in the strife of truth with falsehood
for the good or evil side;
through each choice God speaking to us
offers each the bloom or blight
then that man or nation chooses
for that darkness or that light.

'Then to side with truth is christian
sharing in the heat and dust
ere the cause bring fame and profit
or 'tis prosperous to be just;
Then it is the brave man chooses
while the coward stands aside,
till the multitude make virtue
of the faith they had denied.

'Though the cause of evil prosper
yet the cause of truth is strong;
though her portion be the scaffold
and upon the throne be wrong;
yet that scaffold sways the future
and behind the dim unknown
God still stands within the shadows
keeping watch above his own."

Better to stand on the scaffold with Israel, than in the howling mob with Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and Hamas and the rest of the wannabe Jew-killers.
