And use their plunder to fund the land jihad. "US official: 3 pirates may be dead in shootout," by Mohamed Olad Hassan for AP, September 30 (thanks to Jeremy):
Disagreements between Somali pirates holding a ship laden with tanks and heavy weapons escalated into a shootout and three pirates are believed dead, a U.S. defense official said Tuesday. The pirates denied the report. The U.S. destroyer USS Howard and several other American ships have surrounded the Ukrainian cargo ship Faina, which was hijacked Thursday and is now anchored off the lawless coast of Somalia. The pirates have demanded a ransom of $20 million and the U.S. Navy cordon aims to prevent them from taking any of the weapons ashore.[...]
[T]he pirate spokesman insisted the report was not true, that his colleagues were just celebrating the Muslim feast of Eid al-Fitr despite being surrounded by American warships and helicopters.
"We didn't dispute over a single thing, let alone have a shootout," pirate spokesman Sugule Ali told The Associated Press by satellite telephone Tuesday.
"We are happy on the ship and we are celebrating Eid," Ali said. "Nothing has changed."
The Islamic feast marks the end of the holy month of Ramadan.

Wait a minute! I thought Islam was a religion of peace. Why would murderous pirates be celebrating a Muslim religious holiday? Doesn't their religion (and their prophet) teach them that violently taking other people's things and murder are wrong?

there was no fire fight between the pirates and the US warships. The pirates were shooting amongst themselves after an agrument of what to do with the stole cargo.

I saw over at GoV that Bloomberg news ran this story explaining that there was a disagreement between the "moderate" pirates and the "radical" pirates.
I kid you not.

I would like it if the MSM would point out these pirates are muslim.
I am also assuming that U.S. Navy Seals have already boarded the boat, may still be on the boat, have inspected the cargo, place monitoring equipment and possibly placed charges.
Would that be wrong to assume?

Why not send the Marines as Jefferson did "to the shores of Tripoli" the Mohammedans and their dastardly Islamic ideology. Plain thugs and Murderers.

Why aren't Russian forces dealing with the pirates? It's their ship, not ours but as usual, we're risking American lives and resources to confront them and before it's over, we'll be condemned by the world for our trouble. They should all be shot and thrown overboard and this islamic piracy should be stopped immediately. I do not believe that a gang of illiterate Somali muslim pirates are more powerful than the civilized world's combined navies.

Actually, alaskan1000, the MSM sort of did.
The title of story as originally posted, at least as I saw it on Yahoo.news, was:
"Somali pirates on arms ship celebrate Muslim feast"
although that headline has changed throughout the day. At the moment the headline reads,
"US official: 3 pirates may be dead in shootout"
We have seen many times before where a headline like that was changed to be more politically correct. Or obfuscatory, I would say.
However, that might not be the case in this particular situation, since shortly after the story appeared on Yahoo.news, there was a development: shots fired, which made a better headline for them.

Why not just sink the ship? I doubt the Muslim pirates have the technology to salvage the tanks from an underwater wreck.

"Why not just sink the ship?"

Better still, why not load up a fire-fighting aircraft with lard and dump it on the ship during a flyover? It would be fun to watch what happened next.

Since when do pirates have spokesman? Is Sugule Ali the name of their parrot? What about getting into a union? Bet the benefits are great.

anclin...I noticed that also...Pirates need a spokesman to tell the world that they are cooperative, and basically nice guys celebrating Ramadan?
It's not worth one American life boarding the ship...But I bet the Us wants to inspect that cargo, so they may attempt to board it...

They lie even when there is nothing to be gained by doing so.....out of habit, I guess.

yo ho ho and a bottle of rum....
We hear from the MSM about how sophisticated these "pirates" have become, fast boats, controlled from a mother ship out at sea, etc. Seems like the USN could eradicate the whole enterprise in one afternoon.

Yo ho, yo ho, a parrot's life for me!
Eastview,
Good idea! Only one problem: we'd probably have to rescue all of them from their lifeboats after they fled the stinking ship.
at September 30, 2008 4:14 PM
It's probably been 63 years since an American sub fired a torpedo in anger. Why is that "mother ship" still afloat?

If three of the pirates are dead and the rest are still free and breathing, it's possible the celebrating idiots were shooting in the air and were hit by their own bullets. Or, they just started killing each other over who gets to play tank commander in the cargo hold.
A full-on fight between the Navy and pirates in a cargo ship wouldn't last long. It's always possible Marines sniping or storming the deck could have been temporarily disabled if they observed the pirates shoot into the air, then saw some of them hit by their own bullets; it's hard to shoot when you're laughing your ass off.

heck, just board the ship, capture the cargo, give the ship to Israel, and the tanks and weapons to the Christians in some town in Niger to defend their churches...

Hugh, YES, they do it all the time. The Age newspaper recently announced awards to dhimmi police and dhimmi Catholic church for their efforts re the furthering of "understanding" of Islam, given by a Muslim organization during the "holy" month of ramadan. It is NOT "the holy month", for goodness' sake! How can the Age, so full of sneering atheists, call it that? So fawning. It really annoyed me.

So are these "pirates" terrorists? Obviously they are Muslim. They are breaking the law, threatening, looting, causing harm and danger to others. Why can't the journalists call a spade a spade? The word "pirate" probably leads many readers to incorrect assumptions and doesn't educate or even clue them in about who these people really are.

All clever suggestions aside about various gratifying ways to deal with this scum, in fact the entire cargo needs to secured intact and undamaged. The cargo and ship's records will be needed as evidence so that a complete and thorough investigation can be made to trace it back to its source, and the network of suppliers and handlers can be uncovered. If it really is weapons grade uranium, as has been suggested, then there is only one place this could have originated, and that is the former Soviet Union. It's likely that this is not a one-off incident, and there exists a network connecting source and buyers, and a well-greased pipeline between the two.
The ship should be seized by the U.S. Navy before the Russians can intercede and taken, with cargo, to a friendly port where a complete forensic investigation can be undertaken.

>>The ship should be seized by the U.S. Navy....
But Eastview, that would require that the government people who could order such a thing had a genuine love of the truth. Odds are, they're talking to the Russians right now about how to give the ship and cargo intact to them so as not to offend their sensibilities or upset them in any way. Gosh, we wouldn't want to find out that our erstwhile friends are smuggling nuclear materials to our enemies, would we?
Just plant a row of charges under the keel, set it off, and shrug our shoulders about how that happened. The ship should go down fast enough that there won't be any lifeboats.
