They don't need to. They only need to create enough disruption and fear that parents will willingly stop sending their children to school. How many acid attacks will that take? 10? 15? Probably a relatively low number. When the Beltway snipers attacked the DC suburbs in 2002, 10 people were killed and 3 wounded, including a 13 year old boy at school. Parents were refusing to let their children go to school, ride schoolbuses, or walk or play outside. It doesn't take a lot to shut things down.

Interestingly, the downfall of the Klan wasn't police work as much as ridicule. People succeeded in turning the Klan into buffoons and people quit joining. I saw how public humiliation did the same thing with El Sendero Luminoso in Peru. In order to keep their influence they need both respect and terror. It's pretty hard to take the second without removing the first.

Well, I *do* use acid responsibly--and sometimes it's still not enough. I do etchings every so often, and the lines are incised using a mild solution of acid. About 15 years ago, I spilled a tiny, tiny amount of acid--a small drop--of acid on my arm while moving a tray.

It was very painful, and even though I washed it off immediately, it left a small scar. It was tiny, but fairly noticeable for almost ten years. It's faded, but I can still see it if the light is right and I know where to look. I doubt anyone else would notice it now. I always wear long sleeves now when working with acid, no matter how warm it is.

I can't even imagine the agony of receiving a faceful of strong acid. That this is done deliberately--and to school children--is horrible beyond belief.
