Yesterday I noted that Pompeo was wrong in saying that Muslim leaders in the U.S. had not condemned jihad terror attacks, since they did issue vague and pro-forma condemnations of terrorism. What they are not doing is anything effective to counter the spread of jihadist beliefs within the American Muslim community -- and meanwhile, their circle-the-wagons-and-don't-talk-to-the-FBI mentality remains, and impedes counter-terror efforts. That is what Pompeo should have criticized; instead, he left himself open to this predictable counterattack from the Hamas-linked Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR).

That was careless, but it doesn't negate the genuine value of what Pompeo said. As Pamela Geller observes, "There is plenty he got wrong, but when have we ever before seen anyone rightfully condemn complicit imams on the floor of the House? That's a first."

Indeed, and for that Pompeo is to be commended. What is most noteworthy about CAIR's outrage over his remarks, however, is that he assured the House that terrorists had "hijacked" Islam and that Muhammad would condemn modern Islamic jihad terrorism. Yet despite the fact that he genuflected to these politically correct fictions -- with which Hamas-linked CAIR supposedly agrees as well -- that didn't stop Hamas-linked CAIR from going after him. This demonstrates yet again that there is no one who opposes jihad terror who is acceptable to Hamas-linked CAIR and its allies. When Hamas-linked CAIR targets so-called "Islamophobes" and details all their alleged enormities, some on the Right think that they can avoid this demonization and defamation by highlighting the work of "moderate Muslims" (Zuhdi Jasser, call your office) and talking, as Pompeo did, about how the true Islam is peaceful. But this CAIR attack on Pompeo shows that even they will not be spared. In its "Islamophobia" report a few years back, Hamas-linked CAIR affirmed that there was acceptable and legitimate criticism of Islam and jihad. But the report offered no examples, and Hamas-linked CAIR has never offered any such examples. In reality, anyone and everyone who dares to oppose jihad and Islamic supremacism will become a target for a Hamas-linked CAIR smear campaign. CAIR's real agenda is not to distinguish legitimate resistance to jihad from bigotry and hatred, but to stigmatize all resistance to jihad as bigotry and hatred, and clear away all obstacles to the advance of that jihad.

"CAIR Asks Kansas Rep. Pompeo to Correct 'False and Irresponsible' Attack on Muslims," a Hamas-linked CAIR press release, June 12:

WASHINGTON, June 12, 2013 — /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation's largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today called on Rep. Mike Pompeo (R-Kan.) to correct "false and irresponsible" remarks he made about American Muslims on the floor of the U.S. House yesterday. In those remarks, Pompeo alleged that American Muslim leaders have failed to speak out against terror attacks.

In a letter to Pompeo today Corey Saylor, the director of CAIR's Department to Monitor and Combat Islamophobia, wrote:

"We are writing to address your June 11, 2013, remarks on the House floor alleging that Muslim leadership has failed to condemn or act against terrorism. These remarks are false and irresponsible. You opened your comments by saying, 'Mr. Speaker, it's been just under 2 months since the attacks in Boston, and in those intervening weeks, the silence of Muslim leaders has been deafening.'

"In the hours after the Boston bombings on April 15, which occurred at approximately 2:49 p.m., a number of Muslim institutions issued statements whose themes included prayers for the victims, calls for Muslims to assist humanitarian efforts, and condemnations of terrorism.

"These included, but were not limited to, the Universal Muslim Association of America (5:17 p.m.), the Muslim Public Affairs Council (5:53 p.m.), the Council on American-Islamic Relations (7:46 p.m.), the Muslim Peace Coalition (8 p.m.), the Muslim American Society Public Affairs and Engagement (10:52 p.m.), and the Islamic Society of North America (12:09 a.m. on 4/16)."

In the letter, Saylor provided links containing dozens of anti-terror statements of the type Pompeo claims Muslims have failed to make.

Saylor concluded his letter by stating:

"It is our sincere hope that you will return to the House floor, correct your remarks, and acknowledge the strong messaging coming from American Muslim leadership that clearly states there is never any justification for terrorism, that denounces violent extremist leadership and is a reliable partner in pushing back against the ideology of Al-Qaeda and its allies."

NOTE: Also today, CAIR's Minnesota chapter today called on the Minneapolis Police Department to offer retraining on proper documentation and investigation of reported bias incidents following claims that two recent attacks on Muslims in that city were mishandled.

Big surprise. "IRS exempts terror front group over tea party," from WND, June 3 (thanks to Mackie):

At the same time the Internal Revenue Service delayed or denied requests for tax-exempt status from hundreds of conservative non-profit groups, it was quietly restoring the tax-exempt status of an Islamist front group accused of collaborating with terrorists.

Last year, the politicized agency reinstated the Washington-based Council on American-Islamic Relations’ tax-exempt status despite years of delinquent tax filings. CAIR officials had met with officials inside the White House before the decision was made.

Though Democrat-connected CAIR did not officially endorse Obama, many of its staffers helped turn out the Muslim vote for his re-election. CAIR boasted that its own polling showed more than 85 percent of Muslim-Americans voted for Obama.

In 2011, the IRS stripped the group’s national office of its nonprofit status for failure to file annual tax reports as required by federal law.

The moved followed requests by then-Rep. Sue Myrick, R-N.C., and other congressional leaders asking the IRS to investigate after the 2009 bestseller “Muslim Mafia” called attention to CAIR’s missing IRS filings and foreign donations.

Fight back against CAIR’s attack on First Amendment by making a contribution to WND’s “Legal Defense Fund.” Donations of $25 or more entitle you to free copy of “Muslim Mafia” – the book so devastating to CAIR the group is trying to ban it.

During the years CAIR failed to disclose its donors to the government, it solicited funds from Libya, Sudan and other terror-sponsoring foreign governments, according to “Muslim Mafia.” CAIR is not registered as a foreign agent.

CAIR repeatedly failed to file its annual disclosure report, IRS Form 990. CAIR blames a clerical error for the delinquency and claims to have completed the forms. However, several news organizations, including Politico.com and Gannett Co., have asked CAIR for the 2007-2010 documents, and CAIR has not been able to produce them.

“Given CAIR’s status as an unindicted co-conspirator in the Holy Land Foundation terror-financing case, this failure to comply with federal disclosure laws is all the more troubling,” U.S. Rep. Frank Wolf, the co-chairman of the Congressional Human Rights Caucus, wrote the IRS in a separate request for investigation in 2011.

CAIR’s terrorist ties run deep. The Justice Department lists it among U.S. front groups for Hamas, a Palestinian terrorist organization. And several CAIR officials have been convicted or deported on terrorism-related charges.

The FBI says that until suspicious ties between the leadership of CAIR and that of Hamas are resolved, it will no longer work with CAIR as a partner in counter-terrorism efforts.

Despite these red flags, the IRS in June 2012 sent CAIR-Foundation Inc. a letter stating the controversial nonprofit had regained its tax-exempt
status as a 501(c)3. At the same time, the IRS demanded tea party and other patriot groups turn over donor rolls, membership lists and contacts with political figures, among other things, before the agency would consider granting tax-exempt status to them.

CAIR Foundation, which is listed at the same 453 New Jersey Ave. address as CAIR’s national headquarters in Washington, told the Washington Post that “all the paperwork issues have been resolved” concerning the organization.

However, WND has obtained CAIR-Foundation Inc.’s latest filing, and even this tax document is incomplete. It is a partial return for the calendar year 2011, covering only the period from Aug. 9, 2011, to Dec. 31, 2011. The final page of the return, in fact, requests an extension from the IRS.

“Additional time is required to obtain information necessary in filing a complete and accurate return,” states CAIR’s accountant Joey Musmar.

The filing says the organization solicited $3,964,990 in gifts, grants and other contributions that “were not tax deductible.” An annual fundraiser raised a net $106,879.

At the beginning of 2011, CAIR’s liabilities exceeded its assets by $940,279.

It also owed “CAIR Inc.” $722,261 for “charity consulting.” This amount is listed as a “loan.” CAIR Inc. is listed as a “C Corp.”

CAIR insists its tax returns for 2007-2010 exist. Yet it still won’t produce them, despite repeated requests. According to the IRS, nonprofits must make their tax returns available to the public upon request.

CAIR lists Todd Gallinger, director of chapter development, as its contact for such matters, at (202) 488-8787 and tgallinger@cair.com.

It’s not clear what, if anything, the IRS investigated concerning CAIR’s filings. The agency did not respond to requests for comment.

Pamela Geller published a piece at Breitbart News yesterday, challenging self-proclaimed moderate Muslim groups to do something effective, beyond vague condemnations, to stop the jihad terror attacks they ostensibly oppose. Not surprisingly, the Council on American-Islamic Relations, the notorious pseudo-moderate Hamas-linked Muslim Brotherhood group, was quick to pounce:

CAIRJohnson.jpg

They were linking to a hit piece by Charles Johnson at the blog Little Green Footballs. Longtime Jihad Watch readers may remember Johnson as a once-prominent counter-jihad blogger who, for reasons still unknown, betrayed all his principles and began devoting his time to smearing his former friends and associates. His site still exists, although it is now just a bitter, spiteful hate site wholly dedicated to defaming and destroying those who are trying to defend freedom. Having proven himself thoroughly untrustworthy, Johnson is shunned by the Left and despised by the Right. The only people who still take him seriously are the stealth jihadis at Hamas-linked CAIR, who find his hate screeds useful to demonize voices of freedom and clear away all obstacles to the advance of the bloody jihad that just struck on the streets of Boston, London and Paris. And so they eagerly distributed this piece: "Pamela Geller Spreads Hatred and Lies at Breitbart.com," by Charles Johnson at Little Green Footballs, May 29.

After smearing Geller as an "anti-Muslim demagogue" when he likely knows full well that portraying her work for human rights as "anti-Muslim" not only defames her but paints a big target on her back, Johnson quotes extensively from her piece at Breitbart about the non-response of the "moderates" to jihad terror and then adds:

Geller is simply lying. All of the major British Muslim organizations immediately spoke out against this murder, with no “deflection of responsibility” or “attacks on the kuffar.” Here are three examples out of many...

Johnson then quotes statements from the Muslim Council of Britain and several other Muslim groups, condemning the attack. The Muslim Council of Britain was an especially unfortunate choice on Johnson's part, as it is hardly moderate by any standard.

That illustrates the hollowness of the "condemnations" Johnson trumpets, and it highlights Geller's point. In the wake of the jihad attack in London, she wrote, "we are admonished and schooled on a mythical narrative of anti-Muslim backlash and 'Islamophobia.' We hear, meanwhile, no cries for reform. 'Moderate Muslims' hold no protests against the jihad here or abroad." And it's true. The condemnations Johnson quotes are not calls for reform of Islam. They are backed up by no action: neither the MCB nor any other Muslim group in Britain has any program to teach Muslims to reject Adebolajo's understanding of Islam, even though they ostensibly reject it. There are no Muslim rallies against jihad terror to rival the many, many rallies and demonstrations we saw against Muhammad cartoons and remarks by the Pope. All we have are these pro-forma condemnations, which only fool foolish Useful Idiots like Johnson.

And he is, as Hamas-linked CAIR's tweet demonstrates, quite useful indeed to those who are working to advance the jihad against the West.

This always happens: every time there is a jihad terror attack or foiled plot, the mainstream media fills up with stories about Muslims worrying about a "backlash." The "backlash" never materializes. In reality, the stream of stories about fears of "backlash" are designed to deflect attention away from the jihad attack and onto Muslims as victims, who as victims ought to be exempt from scrutiny and accountability (even though no U.S. mosque or Islamic school has any program designed to teach against the al-Qaeda version of Islam that they ostensibly reject). In reality, as David J. Rusin noted in National Review last January, "a detailed analysis of FBI statistics covering ten full calendar years since the 9/11 terrorist attacks reveals that, on a per capita basis, American Muslims, contrary to spin, have been subjected to hate crimes less often than other prominent minorities. From 2002 to 2011, Muslims are estimated to have suffered hate crimes at a frequency of 6.0 incidents per 100,000 per year – 10 percent lower than blacks (6.7), 48 percent lower than homosexuals and bisexuals (11.5), and 59 percent lower than Jews (14.8). Americans should keep these numbers in mind whenever Islamists attempt to silence critics by invoking Muslim victimhood."

No victimization of even one innocent person is ever acceptable. These "backlash" stories are just tools in the hands of Islamic supremacists, which they use once again to evade any responsibility to clean up their communities and stop the spread of the jihad doctrine and Islamic supremacism.

And note the author of this piece: none other than Manya Brachear, who is ever ready to enable Islamic supremacists. Brachear doesn't mention (of course) that Ahmed Rehab is an operative of a Hamas-linked Muslim Brotherhood group that has had several of its officials convicted of jihad terror activity. CAIR is an unindicted co-conspirator in a Hamas terror funding case — so named by the Justice Department. CAIR operatives have repeatedly refused to denounce Hamas and Hizballah as terrorist groups. Several former CAIR officials have been convicted of various crimes related to jihad terror. CAIR's cofounder and longtime Board chairman (Omar Ahmad), as well as its chief spokesman (Ibrahim Hooper), have made Islamic supremacist statements. Its California chapter distributed posters telling Muslims not to talk to the FBI. CAIR has opposed every anti-terror measure that has ever been proposed or implemented.

"Muslims guard against backlash," by Manya A. Brachear for the Chicago Tribune, April 19 (thanks to Kapil):

The [Hamas-linked] Council on American Islamic Relations again offered sympathy to victims of the Boston Marathon bombing on Friday, but added a plea for Americans not to generalize and conclude that Muslim teachings influenced the suspect in any way.

"Our focus is primarily on the victims," said Ahmed Rehab, executive director of the Chicago chapter at a press conference Friday afternoon. "We don't want to be drawn into defending ourselves."

Citing acts of violence in Boston and New York, Rehab blamed Islamophobic forces for inciting hate crimes. He said that phenomenon poses a bigger threat than "innocently ignorant individuals."

Pointing to the Jewish leader and pastor by his side at the news conference, he said Muslims have discovered a powerful source of support since the September 11 terrorist attacks.

"Friends of Muslims are emerging as a great force in America," he said. "American people are fed up with the dumbing down of America."

If that is so, then you must be on your way out, Ahmed.

The irony is that, as I have explained many times (as in this National Review article), the term "Islamist" is often used by those who believe that Islam is a Religion of Peace that has been hijacked by a tiny minority of extremists, to create a distance between Islam, which is supposedly entirely benign and peaceful, and Islamism, which teaches political authoritarianism, subjugation of non-Muslims, and everything else about Islam that is unpleasant and at variance with Western principles of human rights.

You can see a recent example of this in Martin Amis's fatuous statements here: "In 'The Second Plane,' a collection of nonfiction published in 2008, Mr. Amis noted that he is an "Islamismophobe," not an Islamophobe. The events of Sept. 11 left him bereft and angry and in desperate search of distinctions. 'Let us make the position clear,' he wrote in an essay titled 'Terror and Boredom.' 'We can begin by saying, not only that we respect Muhammad, but that no serious person could fail to respect Muhammad. . . . But we do not respect Muhammad Atta.'" No serious person could fail to respect Muhammad? Despite the fact that Atta and others like him look to Muhammad as their exemplar and inspiration, not without abundant justification for doing so from the canonical accounts of Muhammad's life?

Anyway, now even the word "Islamist," although it is usually used to exonerate Islam and distance its teachings from the violence and hate propagated in its name, is unacceptable for Hamas-linked CAIR, and they're crowing today about their victory over AP. Clearly Hamas-linked CAIR's amiable stomach-stapled beekeper, Honest Ibe Hooper, sees how successful he and his fellow Islamic supremacists have been in co-opting the media, government, and law enforcement in recent years, and is pressing on toward final victory: the total silencing of any resistance to the global jihad and Islamic supremacism.

"The Associated Press Revises Another Politically Charged Term, by Steven Nelson for U.S. News and World Report, April 4 (thanks to all who sent this in):

...The term "Islamist," the AP clarified in a Thursday afternoon alert to online stylebook subscribers, should not be used as "a synonym for Islamic fighters, militants, extremists or radicals."

"Islamist" is frequently used as a label for conservative Islamic political movements, particularly Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood and Hamas, the group's Palestinian offshoot. It generally carries a negative connotation.

The AP first added the term to its stylebook in 2012. The definition initially read:

Supporter of government in accord with the laws of Islam. Those who view the Quran as a political model encompass a wide range of Muslims, from mainstream politicians to militants known as jihadi.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations, an American advocacy group sometimes labeled "Islamist" by critics, previously lobbied for the AP to drop the term. In a January op-ed CAIR's communications director, Ibrahim Hooper, wrote the term "has become shorthand for 'Muslims we don't like'" and "is currently used in an almost exclusively pejorative context."

As of Thursday's update, the AP definition reads:

An advocate or supporter of a political movement that favors reordering government and society in accordance with laws prescribed by Islam. Do not use as a synonym for Islamic fighters, militants, extremists or radicals, who may or may not be Islamists.

Where possible, be specific and use the name of militant affiliations: al-Qaida-linked, Hezbollah, Taliban, etc. Those who view the Quran as a political model encompass a wide range of Muslims, from mainstream politicians to militants known as jihadi.

CAIR praised the AP's update. "We believe this revision is a step in the right direction and will result in fewer negative generalizations in coverage of issues related to Islam and Muslims," Hooper said. "The key issue with the term ‘Islamist’ is not its continued use; the issue is its use almost exclusively as an ill-defined pejorative."

I sent Pamela Geller the notes below about this egregious example of mainstream media distortion and propagandizing, which she posted here. "Campaign Aims To Reclaim True Meaning Of 'Jihad,'" by Heather Maher for Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, March 29:

WASHINGTON -- Ever since Osama bin Laden used the word “jihad” to describe the September 11, 2001 attacks on the United States, the ancient Arabic word has been saddled with its darkest possible meaning.
Osama bin Laden didn't invent violent jihad. Violent jihad is as old as the Qur'an (2:190-193; 4:89; 9:5; 9:29; 47:4, etc.) and Muhammad. Even according to the hadith (which doesn't appear in any of the canonical collections and is widely rejected by Muslim scholars as inauthentic anyway) in which Muhammad designates the spiritual jihad as the "greater" jihad, the "lesser" jihad involving warfare against unbelievers is not rejected. He not only preached it; he practiced it. If anyone "saddled" the word jihad with its "darkest possible meaning," it was Muhammad or those who developed his myth, and all the violent jihadists who followed his example and obeyed his words throughout Islamic history. In writing as if this was all Osama's doing, RFE/RL minimizes the problem of jihad violence, obscures its roots in Islamic teaching, and fosters Hamas-linked CAIR's deception campaign.
In the decade since, “jihad” has come into widespread use by non-Muslims and Muslims alike as shorthand for Islamic war against the West.

Ahmed Rehab says his jihad is to take that word back.

With his own money and donations from supporters, the director of the Chicago office of the Council on Arab Islamic Relations has launched an ad campaign that promotes a lesser-known meaning -- one he says is to “struggle to get to a better place, to improve one’s life and the lives of others, to do what’s right and not what’s easy.”
Rehab doesn't say it, but that's not a "lesser-known meaning" -- that's the basic definition of jihad in Islam. That's the basis for jihad warfare, as well as for the interior spiritual struggle that he is elaborating on in his campaign. Islamic jihadists don't wage war against unbelievers for the joy of making war or just to sow mayhem for the fun of it; they wage war against unbelievers to make the world a "better place" and to improve their lives and the lives of others by imposing Islamic law over the conquered land: since they believe Islamic law to be the law of the supreme god, they think that imposing it is best for everyone and right for societies.
The ads, which are displayed on buses and trains in Chicago, San Francisco, and Washington, D.C., feature images of smiling Muslim-Americans.

“My jihad is to stay fit despite my busy schedule,” says a hijab-wearing woman holding a dumbbell. “My jihad is to march on despite losing my son,” says a mother holding a framed photograph of a child. “My jihad is to never settle short of my best effort,” says a bearded businessman.

The ads reflect Rehab’s understanding of the word, which he learned from his grandmother -- a woman who was paralyzed and bedridden for much of his childhood.

“When I asked her, ‘How do you deal with this?’ She simply said, ‘My son, it’s my jihad,’” he remembers. “And this was so powerful as I grew up because it was an acknowledgment from her that it’s a test, a barrier, a challenge.”

RFE/RL doesn't mention (of course) that Rehab is an operative of a Hamas-linked Muslim Brotherhood group that has had several of its officials convicted of jihad terror activity.

And Ahmed Rehab would have us believe that his understanding of the word jihad is all about getting exercise, working hard, and dealing with illness and grief? Pull my other leg, Ahmed. If that were so, there would be no way he could work for a Hamas/Muslim Brotherhood group. The cynicism of this campaign is breathtaking, and this Hamas-linked Rehab must be laughing up his sleeve at the gullibility and naivete of reporters like Heather Maher of RFE/RL.

'Taking Back Islam'

Rehab says his campaign is aimed both at Muslims who have all but surrendered the word to extremists and non-Muslims who are unaware that “religious war” is only one narrow definition. The campaign’s slogan is, “Taking back Islam from Muslim and anti-Muslim extremists alike.”
This is worse than Rehab's lies about jihad. The daily headlines from around the world refute him on that, and more people are waking up to that fact every day. But here -- and he has done it many times before, as have other deceptive Islamic supremacist spokesmen such as Faisal Abdul Rauf and Daisy Khan -- he engage in an unconsionable moral equivalence, lumping jihad murderers together with those who are trying to resist them as "extremists." So Rehab is equating people who slaughter innocents in the name of their religion with people who are trying to defend those innocents. What is the purpose of doing that? It's this: everyone agrees that the jihadis who slaughter innocents are evil. If Rehab and his cronies can convince people that those who resist those jihadis are just as evil as the jihadis themselves, he will stigmatize opposition to jihad terror, make people afraid to resist it, and thereby clear away obstacles to the jihad's advance. This shows more clearly than anything else what side Rehab is really on, and what he is really trying to do.
He laments the fact that moderate Muslims “have been sitting out the debate” and allowed it to be hijacked by two extremes who have defined how the West should see Islam and how Muslims should see the West.

“To us, it’s time we fought against the dumbing down of the conversation,” he says. “There is no inherent schism, there is no inherent conflict, and here am I, as living witness to this -- an American Muslim who very much loves America and very much practices my faith and actually sees jihad as something I would do to make America a better place.”
Oh, indeed, I am sure you do see it that way, Ahmed. But note how carefully he is speaking: he says he loves America; he doesn't say he loves Constitutional freedoms. And indeed, he has already shown that he hates the freedom of speech. And he wants to wage jihad to make America a better place? Remember: the goal of jihad is to impose Sharia. A Shafi'i manual of Islamic law that was certified in 1991 by the clerics at Al-Azhar University, one of the leading authorities in the Islamic world, as a reliable guide to Sunni orthodoxy, stipulates about jihad that the Muslim community "makes war upon Jews, Christians, and Zoroastrians...until they become Muslim or pay the non-Muslim poll tax” ('Umdat al-Salik, o9.8). This "non-Muslim poll tax" is the jizya, the tax specified in Qur'an 9:29, which mandates that Muslims must fight against the People of the Book (primarily Jews and Christians) until they "pay the jizya with willing submission and feel themselves subdued." Imposing that would be making America a better place, as far as Rehab is concerned.
Ahmed al-Rahim, an assistant professor of Islamic Studies at the University of Virginia, says the Muslim extremists the ad campaign refers to are jihadi Salafis -- Sunni Muslims who believe violence is justified to achieve their political objectives.

This subgroup “takes a particular puritanical interpretation of Islam -- and they emphasize the jihad that is here, the holy war aspect," he says. "They are emphasizing the violent, war-like nature of the term, as it’s used [today], and for them, that is also an attempt to reclaim what they think is the original meaning.”

What is the original meaning? Muhammad said: "Fight in the name of Allah and in the way of Allah. Fight against those who disbelieve in Allah. Make a holy war...When you meet your enemies who are polytheists, invite them to three courses of action. If they respond to any one of these, you also accept it and withhold yourself from doing them any harm. Invite them to (accept) Islam; if they respond to you, accept it from them and desist from fighting against them....If they refuse to accept Islam, demand from them the Jizya. If they agree to pay, accept it from them and hold off your hands. If they refuse to pay the tax, seek Allah's help and fight them." (Sahih Muslim 4294) But what could Muhammad possibly know about the original meaning of jihad?

Counter Campaign

In that sense, he adds, “there is a kind of jihad for reclaiming or redefining the term ‘jihad’ among Muslims.”

The other group of extremists is represented by people like Pamela Geller, who eagerly embraces the word's most violent meaning.

This is the basest libel. Pamela Geller doesn't "eagerly embrace" jihad's "most violent meaning." She dares to notice it, when Rehab and others are trying to obfuscate it. She is trying to call attention to it so as to increase resistance to it.

Geller, who leads an anti-Islamic group called the American Freedom Defense Initiative, even promoted it in controversial ads she ran in New York City last year and this year in Chicago, in response to the “My Jihad” campaign.

Geller "even promoted it." This is like saying that Winston Churchill "eagerly embraced" and "promoted" Nazism.

Pamela Geller, an anti-Islamist activistPamela Geller, an anti-Islamist activist
Rehab and his supporters, she says, “are sanitizing and whitewashing ‘jihad’ and, in effect, disarming the American people in what is clearly the greatest national security threat that this nation faces.”

Geller insists that her group “doesn’t editorialize” to make its point because it doesn’t have to. “Our ad campaign that uses the texts and the teachings of Islam to justify violence and supremacism uses actual quotes by Islamic supremacists and jihadists,” she says, “including the prime minister of Turkey, [former Al-Qaeda-leader] Osama bin Laden, and the Times Square bomber” Faisal Shahzad.
I asked Pamela Geller what she said to Heather Maher, and she told me that she said that the ads show how jihadists use the texts and teachings of Islam to justify violence and supremacism. This is something that both she and I have pointed out many times. But Heather Maher twists her words so that it sounds as if she is saying that our ads justify violence and supremacism -- a typically dishonest mainstream media move.
But Jamal Elias, a professor of Islamic thought at the University of Pennsylvania, says -- strictly grammatically speaking -- the ads err because they reduce the meaning of "jihad" to one definition, when it actually has many.
It doesn't seem to occur to Heather Maher or Jamal Elias that exactly the same thing could be said about Rehab's jihad ads, since they say nothing about jihad violence which, as history shows, has been the primary understanding of jihad among Muslims since the beginning of Islam.

“It’s defined in several different ways. It’s a term that actually means ‘struggle’ or ‘striving,’ and the longer term is actually ‘striving in the path of God,’” he explains. “So in a most literal sense, it is not -- as people sometimes wrongly assume -- an explicit reference to some form of violence, whether justified or unjustified. It’s a very loose definition which can fit a lot of things within it.”
Elias probably knows that jihad fi sabeel Allah -- striving in the path of Allah -- actually refers in Islamic theology and law specifically to hot, armed warfare against unbelievers. And some wrongly assume that it has to do with violence? Maybe it's because of Qur'anic passages like this: "Against them make ready your strength to the utmost of your power, including steeds of war, to strike terror into (the hearts of) the enemies, of God and your enemies..." (Qur'an 8:60). Why are "steeds of war" necessary for an interior spiritual struggle?
In a political context, he admits, the word is widely understood to mean some form of armed activity. But he adds that “generally when Muslims have used the term -- and this is historically true -- they’ve frequently used it as a struggle for self-improvement at a personal level.”
Frequently but not solely. Warfare against unbelievers, called jihad, is a constant of Islamic history. The fact that some Muslims understand the term differently doesn't mitigate that jihad warfare.
Al-Rahim says plenty of medieval Islamic legal texts refer to jihad as a religiously sanctioned, or holy, war, but he also points out that the Koran tells how the Prophet Muhammad once told his fighters after a battle that they had “achieved the minor jihad.”

When his followers asked why their battle against infidels and pagans was only minor, al-Rahim says Muhammad replied, "The greater jihad is that against the lower self, or the purging of the self or the soul of evil intention, a kind of spiritual struggle."

Rehab’s campaign  -- which he plans to take abroad -- may have begun with a disagreement over a word, but it’s landed him squarely in the larger debate over who speaks for Islam.

It’s a role he sounds happy to take on. “It is a huge loss to humanity if we live on believing that these extremists are the only voices,” he says. “In fact they’re not. In fact, they’re a minority.”

RFE/RL ends with Rehab repeating his outrageous moral equivalence of mass murderers with those who oppose them. It shows how far RFE/RL, and mainstream journalism, has descended.

Pamela Geller has the story:

Help us keep our pro-freedom ads going: CONTRIBUTE HERE!

Islamic supremacist and leftist goons have launched a campaign to intimidate the fundraising site Indiegogo into taking down our AFDI fundraising campaign for our jihad truth ads.

They're asking their fellow fascists to write to Indiegogo here to complain about their hosting our campaign. So please use that same link to implore Indiegogo not to give in to pressure from Hamas-tied Islamic supremacists. Remind them that Hamas-CAIR's Zahra Billoo, who has urged people to tweet complaints about our truth campaign to @indiegogo, has advised Muslims to shun law enforcement and called U.S. troops “terrorists.”

True to form, the anti-freedom thugs have deliberately launched this campaign just as Pesach is about to begin -- when they know that many freedom fighters will be busy with life.

Don't let them get a jump on the lovers of freedom. Again: write to Indiegogo here and tweet to @indiegogo thanking them for allowing voices of freedom to use their service.

New York Times reporter Anne Barnard is much more respectful toward the jihadist Hitto than she was toward the counter-jihadist Pamela Geller. Par for the course. As far as the mainstream media is concerned, Hamas-linked CAIR is a sainted, sinless organization -- even when one of its former officials becomes the leader of a group that will unavoidably contain violent pro-Sharia jihadists.

"Syrian Rebels Pick U.S. Citizen to Lead Interim Government," by Anne Barnard for the New York Times, March 18:

BEIRUT, Lebanon — Syria’s main exile opposition coalition elected a naturalized Syrian-born American citizen early Tuesday to be the first prime minister of an interim Syrian government, charged with funneling aid to rebels inside Syria and offering an alternative to the government of President Bashar al-Assad.

By choosing Ghassan Hitto, 50, an information technology executive who lived in Texas until recently, the Syrian opposition coalition concluded months of contentious efforts to unite behind a leader, under pressure from the United States and its allies, which demanded that the opposition set up clear chains of command as a condition of increasing aid to the rebels.

Mr. Hitto, a relative unknown in opposition politics who rose to prominence recently through efforts to improve the delivery of humanitarian aid, was far from a unanimous choice. After a day of maneuvering and voting on Monday that lasted into early Tuesday, he won 35 votes, just three more than Assad Mustafa, a former agricultural minister under Mr. Assad’s father and predecessor, Hafez al-Assad.

Mr. Hitto faces formidable challenges in his quest to to establish administrative authority over areas of northern Syria that have been secured by the rebels....

With his many years in Texas, Mr. Hitto may seem like an unusual selection to lead a government struggling to establish street credibility with rebels — or an uprising facing allegations from Mr. Assad’s supporters that it is an American creation.

But he said he could not resist getting involved, especially after his son Obaida, 25, sneaked off to Syria and joined rebel fighters to shoot videos, deliver humanitarian aid and spread word of their struggle.

Mr. Hitto and his wife, Suzanne, an American schoolteacher, have four children, all born in the United States, where Mr. Hitto advocated for Muslim Americans after 9/11 as a representative of the Council on American-Islamic Relations....

The mask slips. "'We are above the law of the land,'" by John Griffing in WND, March 3 (thanks to Pamela Geller):

A leader for the Texas branch of the Council on American Islamic Relations has told a crowd at a rally for Islam that members of the faith really shouldn’t be bound by American law.

“If we are practicing Muslims, we are above the law of the land,” said Mustafa Carroll, the executive director of the Dallas-Fort Worth CAIR branch, a keynote speaker as the recent rally.

The event was a rally in Austin, a part of the nationwide effort to hold “Muslim Capitol Day” events.

CAIR itself has been under investigation for its documented ties to terrorist organizations in the past. Some details revealed by Daniel Pipes are that:

  • CAIR funded the Holy Land Foundation, which was used to funnel money to Hamas. President Bush shut down Holy Land Foundation, which CAIR called “unjust” and “disturbing.”
  • CAIR denied Osama Bin Laden was behind 9/11, even though Bin Laden said so on camera.
  • CAIR demanded removal of a billboard in Los Angeles in 1998 that described Osama bin Laden as “the sworn enemy,” saying that this description was “offensive to Muslims.” [Osama had by this point released his Declaration of War on the United States.]
  • CAIR called the conviction of the 1993 WTC bombers “a travesty of justice.”
  • CAIR called the conviction of Omar Abdel Rahman, the blind sheikh who planned to blow up New York City landmarks, a “hate crime.”
  • CAIR labeled the extradition order for suspected Hamas terrorist Mousa Abu Marook “anti-Islamic” and “anti-American.”

CAIR also had on its advisory board Siraj Wahhaj, an unindicted co-conspirator in the attempted 1993 WTC bombings. It was the same Siraj Wahhaj who was asked to deliver the “Juma,” or invocation at the Democratic National Convention for President Obama. He also once remarked, “It is my duty and our duty as Muslims to replace the U.S. Constitution with the Quran.”

According to the website about the event, Muslims from around Texas went to the Capitol in Austin to “promote civic and political activism throughout the wider Muslim community.”

The organization reported, “One major issue discussed was the recent House and Senate bill proposals involving the implementation of ‘anti-Shariah’ legislation, where the First Amendment rights and freedoms of Muslims would ultimately be hindered.”

Critics allege that Shariah prohibits other faiths from free exercise when enforced, and would actually invalidate the American First Amendment, unless practitioners were Muslim.

Carroll’s statement was similar to a statement made by CAIR Chairman Omar M. Ahmad, who is on record saying, “Islam isn’t in America to be equal to any other faith, but to become dominant. The Quran…should be the highest authority in America, and Islam the only accepted religion on earth.”

Carroll began joking about the widespread concern surrounding Shariah, the religious code that governs all Muslim civil and political life, saying, “We tried to downplay Shariah, because we didn’t want to give the other side any excitement for being here.”

He dismissed critics who express concern about Shariah as simply “anti-foreign,” telling the audience, “When you even say the word Shariah, people get nervous. We are not advocating for Shariah. We are not trying to make Shariah the law of the land.”

Carroll claimed that all Muslims want is the “right to practice our faith.”

But he also said, “If you understand Shariah, the foundation of our faith…how we treat our neighbor, how we treat our parents…how we participate in society, all of that is part of Shariah.”

Carroll is on record defending Hamas, considered by many to be a terrorist group.

“I think you can only blame Hamas for so long. It takes two to tango. And I think, you know, that what we’ve heard for a number of years is this terrorist, terrorist, terrorist, terrorist, Hamas, Hamas, Hamas, was not just Hamas,” he’s said.

And at CAIR’s Dallas banquet in 2007, Carroll said, “Look at the true cause of the terrorism. It’s not somebody is reading a book, reading a Quran, and then go out and say, ‘Well, the Quran told me to blow this up. I’m gonna blow it up.’ The cause, the root cause of terrorism is oppression. The root cause of terrorism is oppression.”...

On this week’s episode of the world's challenging chat show, The Glazov Gang, PJTV’s Alfonzo Rachel joined Hollywood actor Dwight Schultz and PolitiChick warrior Ann-Marie Murrell to discuss how a regional director of the Hamas-linked Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) called for Sharia punishments in the U.S. for those who "insult" Islam. The discussion occurs in Part II and focuses on Hamas-linked CAIR-St. Louis Director Faizan Syed’s solution for the problem of people publishing “anti-Islamic” views on the internet. The segment also deals with the nightmares posed by John Brennan, Chuck Hagel and John Kerry. (Part I topics: The Left’s Romance with Chris Dorner Romance as well as on Obama’s Obedient Media.)

The Organization of Islamic Cooperation is leading a global campaign to intimidate free states into criminalizing criticism of Islam. Considering that Awad's Hamas-linked CAIR leads a relentless campaign of defamation against anyone and everyone who dares to stand up against the jihad and Islamic supremacism, that war against free speech doesn't seem to trouble Awad. Nor, apparently, does appearing in the same forum with the genocide-minded Jew-hater Ahmadinejad. CAIR: A "moderate" "civil rights" organization, says the mainstream media.

In "Savage summit and its 'Islamophobia' problem" at WND, February 11, Pamela Geller unmasks Hamas-linked CAIR yet again:

The Hamas-tied Council on American-Islamic Relations, or CAIR, took off its mask last week and joined the modern-day caliphate, the 57-government Organization of Islamic Cooperation in Cairo to discuss the No. 1 issue to the Muslim world: “Islamophobia to be major issue discussed at meeting of heads of state.”

Islamophobia: in other words, the imposition of the Shariah. You might think that the leaders from every Muslim country would convene to discuss the brutality of Shariah: the persecution, oppression and slaughter of non-Muslims in Muslim countries and the subjugation of women. You would think that they might look inward – but you’d be wrong. They want more of all that.

Hamas-CAIR Director Nihad Awad’s Facebook page carried this announcement: “CAIR Director to Tweet from OIC Summit in Cairo: Nihad Awad, the national executive director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, will tweet updates (@NihadAwad) from the two-day summit of the 57-member Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) in Cairo that begins on Wednesday.”

The announcement continued: “At the summit, Awad will meet with heads of state and other foreign dignitaries and will offer input on the growing phenomenon of Islamophobia in the United States and around the world.” Said Awad: “It is critical to understand the damage Islamophobia is causing not only to Muslims, but also to the fabric of Western society, which is based on diversity and inclusion.” Awad also “noted that growing Islamophobia damages relations with the Muslim world, fuels anti-Americanism and is driven by a tiny minority of individual hate-mongers and hate groups.”

In the eyes of OIC officials, no problem in the contemporary world is more urgent than “Islamophobia,” which it calls “a crime against humanity” that the U.N. and the EU must officially outlaw. Even discussing why so much terrorism is carried out in the name of Islam is to be forbidden. The OIC insists, too, that international bodies ban “defamation of religion,” by which it means criticism of anything Islamic. Defamation of Judaism, Christianity, Bahai, Hinduism and even heterodox Muslim sects such as the Ahmadiyya is common within the borders of many OIC countries, a fact the OIC refuses to acknowledge.

While there, Awad can rub elbows with Iran President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. Ahmadinejad, said Iran’s PressTV “is leading the Iranian delegation to the Cairo summit of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, which begins on February 6.”

Target.jpg

"Given the upsurge in shootings across our country, we have a concern that someone who has been shooting at targets may run across someone wearing similar garb and commit an act of violence against them," said Dawud Walid of Hamas-linked CAIR. And he said of the ironically named Mr. Jihad: "He told me we're at war and we were trying to kill Usama bin Laden. I told him there are people here who may dress that way and they aren't like Usama bin Laden."

No innocent people should ever be victimized, and there is no justification for such a thing. Yet Thompson Targets, the source of the target, also sells a “Wall Street” zombie target, and yet no one is complaining to them about the possibility that someone may start shooting Wall Street bankers because of it. Certainly there are "people here who may dress that way and they aren't like Usama bin Laden," but that is true of virtually every violent group -- that there are non-violent people who may dress and act the same way. Walid's jihad here is part of Hamas-linked CAIR's larger and ongoing effort to rule out of the bounds of acceptable discourse any examination of jihad violence and Islamic supremacism, with the goal of removing all impediments to them, and of portraying Muslims as victims of unjust suspicion, so as to intimidate non-Muslims into dropping any and all counterterror efforts.

Note also that neither the local paper nor Fox bothers to mention that the Justice Department named CAIR an unindicted co-conspirator in a Hamas terror funding case. Nor do they mention that CAIR operatives have repeatedly refused to denounce Hamas and Hizballah as terrorist groups. They say nothing about the fact that several former CAIR officials have been convicted of various crimes related to jihad terror. Nor do they mention that CAIR’s cofounder and longtime Board chairman (Omar Ahmad), as well as its chief spokesman (Ibrahim Hooper), have made Islamic supremacist statements, or that its California chapter distributed posters telling Muslims not to talk to the FBI.

"Royal Oak range to stop selling target wearing Muslim attire," from the Observer & Eccentric, February 9 (thanks to Mitch):

ROYAL OAK — The owner of a gun range in Royal Oak has agreed to stop selling a specific target that depicts a skeleton with a beard dressed in traditional Muslim clothes and holding an AK-47.

Ray Jihad, owner of Target Sports on Woodward Avenue, was approached by Dawud Walid, executive director of the Michigan chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, last week following a complaint from a customer who was concerned the targets sent the wrong message.

“Given the upsurge in shootings across our country, we have a concern that someone who has been shooting at targets may run across someone wearing similar garb and commit an act of violence against them,” Walid said.

Jihad said if it made Walid happy, he would stop selling the targets.

“If they are offended by it, I told him as soon as I sell out of them I will not purchase any more,” he said.

The target is sold by Thompson Targets in Ohio, which also sells a “Wall Street” zombie target and another skeleton target that is wearing a mask and holding a knife.

Walid said he spoke with them and they asked his request be sent to them in writing.

His issue is that there are Muslims around the world who are “friends of our country” and don't mean harm, but who dress a similar way.

“Would he find it acceptable if there was a target with someone wearing a hoodie and saggy jeans, because there is a small population of black and Latino youth involved in gang activity?” Walid said.

The organization is in the process of researching other retailers in the area that may be selling the target to urge them to stop.

Walid said Jihad was “extremely friendly” and understood where they were coming from, and he is hopeful other gun ranges and retailers follow suit.

And from "Muslim group appeals to gun shop to stop selling target of skeleton wearing turban," from Fox News, February 10:

"He told me we're at war and we were trying to kill Usama bin Laden. I told him there are people here who may dress that way and they aren't like Usama bin Laden," Walid told the Macomb Daily.

In "Prosecuting Muslim bomber 'alienates Muslims'?" at WND today, Pamela Geller sheds light on yet another indication of the true allegiances of Hamas-linked CAIR:

In what could have been a jihadi bloodbath of unimaginable proportions, a young American Muslim attempted to mass murder upward of 25,000 infidels (mostly women and children) at a Christmas tree-lighting ceremony in Portland, Ore. Mohamed Mohamud has now been found guilty, and the Hamas-tied Council on American-Islamic Relations, or CAIR, is enraged. According to Reuters, Hamas-CAIR’s Ibrahim Hooper “said the case could alienate the Muslim community.”

Mohamud’s undercover handlers offered him several choices in the service of jihad. He could have opted just to pray for the destruction of the infidels. On the other hand, he could have opted for Islamic martyrdom: killing infidels and getting himself killed in the process. He chose something in-between: a plot to kill infidels in large numbers without killing himself. He told the FBI he wanted to “become operational.”

Now the jury’s verdict is in. Mohamud has been found guilty. And the Muslim Brotherhood front CAIR says has the audacity to say that the prosecution of Mohamud “alienates Muslims.”

Again, there it is. Plain as day. Hamas-CAIR exposes its real agenda yet again. The prosecution of this jihadist “alienates Muslims”? Shouldn’t Muslim groups be standing with those of us who are fighting against this very thing? They should be condemning this attempt at jihad mass murder. But no, instead they stand with the would-be murderer. They are claiming that Mohamed Mohamud was a victim of FBI entrapment. What is the goal of this obfuscation? It is revealing of the true nature of “moderate” groups in the U.S.

Entrapment? Could anyone “entrap” you into mass murdering tens of thousands of people?

Mohamed Mohamud pushed the button twice. It failed to detonate, thanks to FBI surveillance programs (that very ones CAIR is working fiercely to stop).

On the morning of the planned jihad murders, Mohamud told one of his friends that this was “the greatest morning of my life.” No one was forcing him when, a few hours after that, he pushed the buttons on a cell phone that he thought would set off his jihad bomb and murder thousands upon thousands of infidels.

But Hamas-CAIR and other Muslim groups aren’t denouncing jihad and the Quranic verses that inspire these attacks. Why? Why aren’t they critical of jihad? Aren’t they supposed to be “moderate”? Why are they telling Muslims not to cooperate with law enforcement? On two occasions, Cyrus McGoldrick, who was then an official of Hamas-CAIR’s New York chapter, issued threats to “snitches.” Is anyone investigating Cyrus McGoldrick, and trying to find out what he was afraid Muslims would “snitch” about?

Hamas-CAIR’s Ibrahim Hooper also said, “I think convictions in these kinds of cases are almost forgone conclusions based on the government’s actions. They are the same in each case.” Yes, it’s the government’s fault that devout Muslims want to slaughter in the cause of Islam. Let’s blame the government for stopping this mass slaughter.

Why did Bill O’Reilly have CAIR on yet again last Thursday night, giving them the imprimatur of legitimacy?

Hamas-CAIR is a subversive Muslim Brotherhood group that was implicated in the largest terrorist funding trial in our nation’s history, and is (according to the U.S. government) “operating in concert with a host of individuals and organizations dedicated to sustaining and furthering the Hamas movement. … The object of the conspiracy was to support Hamas. The support will be shown to have taken several forms, including raising money, propaganda, proselytizing, recruiting, as well as many other types of actions intended to continue to promote and move forward Hamas’s agenda of the destruction of the State of Israel and establishment of an Islamic state in its place.”

The international Muslim Brotherhood ordered the Muslim Brotherhood chapters throughout the world to create Palestine Committees, whose job it was to support Hamas with “media, money and men” (more here). Clearly, that’s where CAIR comes in.

And the mainstream media aid and abet them. The Reuters report on Hamas-CAIR’s outrage over the Mohamud prosecution is ridiculous. Why go to Hamas-CAIR for comment at all? Why not ask those who are fighting jihad what they think of Mohamud’s actions and the verdict?

Here's the latest in the ongoing Islamic supremacist war against the freedom of speech. "Shariah thugs: CAIR's latest jihad," by Pamela Geller at WND, January 13:

Killing free speech and oppressing freedom-loving people is #MyJihad, what’s yours?

In that I’m paraphrasing the Hamas-tied Council on American-Islamic Relations’ ridiculous new ad campaign claiming that jihad is all about getting in your exercise or making friends among people of a different political perspective, as I wrote about in my WND column last month. But Hamas-CAIR’s real jihad is against the freedom of speech, as it proved again last weekend.

On Saturday, I addressed a standing-room-only crowd at the Maryland Conservative Action Network’s annual conference. Other speakers included Stanley Kurtz, Commissioner Richard Rothschild, Commissioner Blaine Young, Tom Fitton and Delegate Nic Kipke (R-Pasadena), the new chairman of the Anne Arundel County delegation to Maryland’s House of Delegates.

In the run-up to the event, Hamas-CAIR attempted to intimidate the elected officials who had planned on speaking there also into canceling their appearance. Why? Because I was also speaking, of course, and the subject was, “In Defense of Free Speech” (ironically enough). Hamas-CAIR continued its jihad to silence champions of freedom by also urging the organizers to cancel my Saturday morning address.

They meant to threaten and bully our elected officials with a smear campaign designed to destroy them if they dared to attend a conference where I scheduled to speak. This is how these Nazis roll. They did the Hitler jig and demanded that the Maryland Conservative Action Network self-impose the most radical and extreme ideology on the planet, the Shariah. Thuggery, intimidation and the silencing of critics of jihad and Shariah: This is Islamic supremacism in action in a free country.

The original Nazis were cocky, too. Once. This century’s Nazis and brownshirts must prohibit and restrict the truth in order to triumph. Who are they to enforce a punitive code of savage laws on non-Muslims? For those who chose to live under this system of barbarism, that is their great misfortune. But Western politicians and leaders under Western law are abandoning the pillars of our freedom, centuries of Western philosophy, the era of enlightenment. And why? Fear of the savage.

But the Hamas-CAIR thugs failed. One man stood tall and said no. You wouldn’t think that you’d have to applaud an elected official for standing in defense of freedom, but in the low state of the world today, it is a rare man who does. Nic Kipke is such a man.

Kipke said this about me to the Anne Arundel Patch: “She has strong views, but on comparison they are no more controversial than that of someone on the left like Michael Moore. Pamela Geller may say things that are politically incorrect, but she’s protected by the First Amendment.”

Even better, he told the Maryland Gazette: “I don’t know Ms. Geller personally. What I do know about her is that she has pointed out gross atrocities that occur in some Muslim countries against women.”

In all this coverage, it is no surprise that the media tools described Hamas-CAIR as a Muslim advocacy group, despite its unindicted co-conspirator status in the largest terrorist funding trial in our nation’s history, and the convictions of several former members of its leadership of terror-related crimes and its being known as a Muslim Brotherhood proxy.

Even worse, on the day of my talk, the Baltimore Sun ran a lengthy op-ed piece by Hamas-CAIR’s Zainab Chaudry. The same day that a standing-room-only conservative conference gathered in a deep blue state, the Baltimore Sun carried not a word about a conference itself, but just a libelous screed from an operative of a subversive group linked to the Muslim Brotherhood, which is dedicated in its own words, according to a captured internal document, to “eliminating and destroying Western civilization from within and sabotaging its miserable house.” And will the Sun accord me equal time to rebut these distortions and lies from Hamas-CAIR? Don’t bet on it....

The courageous ex-Muslim Ali Sina of Faith Freedom International and SION's Board has penned an extraordinary evisceration of Hamas-linked CAIR's cynical and sinister #MyJihad campaign. Pamela Geller comments here, and be sure to read the whole of Sina's piece here. Here's an excerpt:

MY JIHAD PUTTING A HAPPY FACE ON EVIL
FROM JOSEPH GOEBBELS TO AHMED REHAB

In response to the campaign of Pamela Geller (http://www.atlasshrugs.com/) and Robert Spencer (http://www.jihadwatch.org/)  exposing the evil Quranic verses of Islam - Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) started a MyJihad campaign displaying Happy Faces of young Muslims and their MyJihad personal struggles (greater jihad) masking the evil of the real jihad (lesser jihad) not of personal struggle but the conquest and extermination of non Muslims.  (For pictures created by Joseph Goebbels aptly named Nazi Minister of Propaganda and Enlightenment masking Hitler's personal struggle MyJihad against the Jews and pictures of young happy faces of fatherland pioneers masking the MyJihad of communism - read on.)

My jihad friends

Ahmed Rehab, executive director of  Propaganda and Enlightenment for CAIR-Chicago, and creator of the campaign, said the goal is to explain the very misunderstood and sometimes seemingly controversial concept of Jihad.

“Jihad in Islam simply means the struggle to a better place,” Rehab said. “Whatever barrier or burdens that you have in your life, you are asked, you are tasked to muster in the inner courage, the inner resolve, the inner determination to overcome those personal barriers, personal issues.”

He said the word has been misconstrued by Muslim and anti-Muslim extremists and it’s time to re-educate the public about Islam and its concepts. Often the term “Jihad” is associated with violence and those waging “unholy war.”

“The only two things that God judges you by in the tradition of Islam are the two things that you control, your intentions and your effort,” Rehab said. “Your intention being sincere and your effort being for the best. That effort is Jihad.”

THE TRUE REALITY OF JIHAD

Jihad is 24% of the Medinan Koran and 9% of the total of the entire Koran. Jihad takes up 21 of the Bukhari material and the Sira devotes 67% of its text to jihad

Amount of Islamic TrilogyText Devoted to Jihad (politicalislam.com)

Meccan Quran      0%

Medinan Quran    24%

Sira                       67%

Hadith                   21%

 Total Trilogy         31%

Percentage of Koran Text Devoted to Jihad

Statistics gives us a measure of the claim that the real jihad is inner struggle, the so-called “greater jihad”, whereas the jihad of the sword is the “lesser jihad”. These quasi - greater jihad hadiths total 2% of the Bukhari hadiths that relate to jihad. Of course, the other 98% of the hadiths devoted to jihad claim that jihad of the sword is the supreme act. The statistical answer to the true nature of jihad is that the “greater jihad” of inner struggle is 2% and the “lesser jihad” of the sword is 98%. In other words, jihad is overwhelmingly violent and a little inner struggle.

MYJIHAD AGAINST LESSER JIHAD

In their greater jihad personal struggle to build friendships across the aisle - CAIR and ALL American Muslims must reach out in friendship across the aisle to Pamela and Robert and join forces with them to struggle against the 98% teachings of  Islamic Jihad - the lesser jihad - that orders unholy war against non Muslims until they are totally conquered by Islam and either convert or submit to dhimmi status if peoples of the book or be murdered.

The 9/11 attacks, Ft Hood and Mumbai, London and Madrid massacres were all carried out by Muslims obeying the 98% of lesser jihad teachings of God and the Sunnah of Muhammad who ordered 62 lesser jihad massacres against kafirs and personally participated in 27. Since 9/11 there have been 20,133 (increasing daily) lesser jihad attacks by Muslims following EXACTLY the lesser jihad teachings. During the past 1400 years of Islam, 270,000,000 have perished in the Islamic holocaust lesser jihad.  Millions of women were raped and enslaved.

CAIR must organize an immediate 5 million American Muslim (10 million greater MyJihad boots on the ground) march on Washington hand in hand friendship across the aisle with Pamela and Robert and all Americans to declare MyJihad against all the teachings of  lesser jihad. They will renounce, denounce and demand an end not only to all jihad attacks from Muslims following (again) EXACTLY Islamic teachings not only in the United States (of which there have been many and thankfully although all have failed mostly because of incompetence, it is just a matter of time before luck runs out) but worldwide and  renounce, denounce and demand an end to ALL these murderous lesser jihad teachings.  At this great assembly - the largest in US history - MyJihad Muslims will declare MyJihad against not only lesser jihad but also:

MYJIHAD FOR THE WORLDWIDE TOTAL EQUALITY OF NON MUSLIMS WITH MUSLIMS DECLARING THEIR GOD GIVEN RIGHT TO LIFE, LIBERTY AND THE PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS LIVING THEIR LIVES IN DEMOCRACY AND FREEDOM.

In a field crowded with contenders for the prize, Hussam Ayloush of Hamas-linked CAIR may be the most arrogant, imperious, hateful, mendacious and self-righteous Islamic supremacist on the scene. A particularly revolting and unpleasant man in his unctuous presentation of evil as good, he readily retails libels against freedom fighters on Twitter, only to retreat into silence when challenged about Hamas-linked CAIR's ties to Hamas and the Muslim Brotherhood. One would think that his open, gleeful Streicher-like Jew-hatred and strutting, tinpot-dictator Mussolini-like arrogance would be too much even for California Democrats, but somehow I doubt it will be. With Obama in the White House, Hamas-linked CAIR sees its moment, and is advancing as far as it possibly can before too many lovers of freedom get wind of what is happening.

"CAIR's Ayloush Seeks California Democratic Party Post," from IPT News, January 11 (thanks to Jerk Chicken):

The head of the Council on American-Islamic Relations' (CAIR) Los Angeles office wants another term as a delegate to the California Democratic Party.

Hussam Ayloush was elected as a delegate to District 60 and executive board member in 2011 and seeks a second term in voting Saturday.

If returned to the seat, California Democrats will be represented by someone who likened law enforcement action against a Hamas-supporting charity to "an attempt at genocide" against Palestinians, who incorrectly blamed Jews for an Internet video about Islam's prophet Muhammad that sparked deadly protests internationally. In addition, he defended and lionized university students who tried to silence a speech by Israel's ambassador to the United States and defended a radical imam who called Jews "Descendants of the apes" and wants shariah law imposed over everyone in Egypt, including its Coptic Christian minority.

Ayloush, who was a delegate to the 2012 Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, N.C., casts the United States as controlled by Israeli interests. At a 2008 CAIR banquet in San Diego, he imagined "an America that respects and humanizes religion. It's an America that is free to act on its values and not on the interests of any foreign lobby."

He is advertising his campaign via his Twitter and Facebook pages, stating that "for over 14 years, I have been a fundraiser and activist for many Democratic Party campaigns. I have also helped register thousands of new voters. I work for a national civil liberties organization (CAIR-CA)."

In addition to Ayloush's sketchy personal statements, his organization – CAIR – is rooted in a U.S.-based Hamas-support network and has a history of defending accused terrorists and terror financiers. In 2009, a senior FBI official wrote that the agency could not determine whether CAIR leaders continue to be connected to Hamas.

He was referring, however, to my piece at Atlas Shrugs (which, incidentally, was about him and his ilk: "The Monstrous Moral Inversion of the 'Islamophobia' Industry"), which was not an interview at all, but a column. When someone on his side gently pointed this out, the intrepid journalist Seitz-Wald responded: "I'll admit I didn't even bother reading enough to determine if it was an interview or a column."

In light of his confessed carelessness and obvious dim-bulb status, it is no surprise that he would fall for a war-is-deceit sharpie like Hamas-linked CAIR's Ahmed Rehab, even if Rehab's deception skills are decidedly second-tier. Salon is an indefatigable exponent of the Leftist/Islamic supremacist alliance, and so even if they had sent a more intelligent writer than Alex Seitz-Wald to do this story, Rehab wouldn't have had to work very hard.

And ask Pamela Geller for comment in a story about ads she originated? Or me, who was involved in the process? Of course not! Salon has all the politically correct opinions; it doesn't have to be fair and balanced!

"Can 'jihad' survive Pam Geller?," by Alex Seitz-Wald in Salon, January 9:

So you want to rebrand a word. It’s hard to think of a more difficult rebranding project than “jihad.”

Since Sept. 11, the term has become synonymous with terrorism and villainy — but now a group of Muslims is trying to reclaim the word from the extremists, and redefine “jihad” to mean something normal and peaceful and good. They realize this won’t be easy.

Which group of Muslims? Alex Seitz-Wald doesn't tell you until much later in the article that it's the Hamas-linked Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), which the Justice Department named an unindicted co-conspirator in a Hamas terror funding case. Nor does he mention, and may not know, that CAIR operatives have repeatedly refused to denounce Hamas and Hizballah as terrorist groups. He says nothing about, and may not know, the fact that several former CAIR officials have been convicted of various crimes related to jihad terror. Nor does he mention, and may not know, that CAIR’s cofounder and longtime Board chairman (Omar Ahmad), as well as its chief spokesman (Ibrahim Hooper), have made Islamic supremacist statements, or that its California chapter distributed posters telling Muslims not to talk to the FBI.

Would such a group have an interest in obfuscating the meaning of jihad so as to foster the complacency of Americans? Alex Seitz-Wald doesn't investigate this question.

The campaign hinges on the idea that “jihad” has two commonly accepted usages. One is the violent, physical struggle most of us are familiar with. The other, which many Muslims and Islamic scholars consider the more correct definition, refers to the inner struggle to do good and follow God’s teaching; Muslims strive to attain this every day. This is the “proper meaning” being promoted by My Jihad, a public education campaign recently launched on billboards and on buses in Chicago.

"More correct" is a marvelously weaselly phrase. Is the idea that jihad is violent struggle correct or not? Apparently even the war-is-deceit propagandists who saw in Seitz-Wald the easy mark that he is couldn't bring themselves to tell him that violent jihad wasn't correct in Islam; they could only go so far as to tell him that the interior spiritual struggle was "more correct." Seitz-Wald doesn't notice the incoherence: to say that 2 + 2 = 4 is not "more correct" than to say that 2 + 2 = 5; it is correct and the latter is incorrect.

But in Islamic law, jihad as spiritual struggle is not the correct or "proper meaning," while violent jihad is incorrect; both are accepted understandings of the concept. A manual of Islamic law certified by the highest authority in Sunni Islam, Cairo’s Al-Azhar University, as conforming “to the practice and faith of the orthodox Sunni community” explained: “Jihad means to war against non-Muslims, and is etymologically derived from the word mujahada signifying warfare to establish the religion. And it is the lesser jihad. As for the greater jihad, it is spiritual warfare against the lower self (nafs).” After thus acknowledging the spiritual, “greater jihad,” the manual never mentions it again, but goes on for many paragraphs about the “lesser jihad,” that “war against non-Muslims,” giving rules for the taking of prisoners, the legal status of captive women, the subjugation of the infidels, and more.

This legal manual stipulates that Muslims must make war “upon Jews, Christians, and Zoroastrians…until they become Muslim or pay the non-Muslim poll tax.” It specifies that the warfare against non-Muslims must continue until “the final descent of Jesus.” After that, “nothing but Islam will be accepted from them.”

“The campaign is about reclaiming Islam, and not just ‘jihad,’ from both Muslim and non-Muslim extremists,” said Ahmed Rehab, the leader of the effort, in an interview. “Whether it’s the bin Ladens and the al-Qaidas of the Muslim world, or the Pam Gellers and Frank Gaffneys of the non-Muslim world, ironically — even though they come from the two opposite ends of the spectrum — they agree exactly on the same definition of ‘jihad’ and on the same worldview of Islam versus the rest of the world.”

Note that Rehab follows common and tired Islamic supremacist talking points in tarring as "extremists" both Islamic jihadis and those who resist them. He is trying to imply, with Alex Seitz-Wald's willing help, that those who resist jihad are just as lethal, just as dangerous, as those who commit it. The goal, of course, is to intimidate people into thinking there's something wrong with resisting jihad. To equate Pamela Geller, a political activist working to defend free speech, the freedom of conscience, and equality of rights for all, with Osama bin Laden, the mastermind of the murders of 3,000 people, is a monstrous smear. It sails right by dim Alex, who probably thought it was incisive if he thought about it at all.

Rehab is also trying to hoodwink non-Muslims into thinking that the view of jihad espoused by bin Laden and al-Qaeda is "extremist," as if the mainstream understanding of jihad is the bicycling-through-the-meadows type he is pushing. And we, of course, are greasy Islamophobes who are, in our hate, endorsing the view of the "extremists." He doesn't tell the ever-credulous and starry-eyed Seitz-Wald, although he surely knows, that warfare against and subjugation of unbelievers is the mainstream Muslim understanding of jihad, as I detailed here.

In fact, the ads were directly inspired by Geller, the anti-Muslim blogger and activist, who has plastered her own billboards on subways and buses in New York. They label Muslims as “savages” and incite viewers to “defeat Jihad.”

"Anti-Muslim" equals in favor of legal equality, the freedom to change one's religion or have none at all, and the freedom of speech as our fundamental bulwark against tyranny. The appellation says more about Alex Seitz-Wald than it does about Pamela Geller, and is designed to imply that she is motivated simply by race hate, even though Islam is not a race, and not by any legitimate concern for the principles that are threatened by Sharia.

The quoted ad only suggests that "all Muslims are savages" if all Muslims support the bloody jihad against Israeli civilians like the Fogel family, murdered in their beds by Islamic jihadists whose deed was then celebrated in Gaza. I expect that Ahmed Rehab does support that jihad, but for him and other Islamic supremacist writers in the U.S. to suggest that all Muslims do is more than a little..."Islamophobic." Doesn't the Vast Majority of Peaceful Muslims reject jihad violence, as we are constantly told?

“Everybody was talking about the ‘savage’ part, but to me, that’s just sort of an insult — she thinks I’m a savage,

If the shoe fits, Ahmed.

I think she’s an idiot, we’re even,” he said. “But the problem for me was the use of the word ‘jihad.’ When no one seemed to care about that, I realized that we have a problem.”

Indeed. One that cosmetics won't conceal.

In billboards on buses and subways, smiling Muslims and non-Muslims share universal human aspirations, personalized by the individual “jihads” of the non-actor volunteers who share their struggles. In this context, a jihad is no more threatening than a New Year’s resolution. “My jihad is to stay fit despite my busy schedule,” one woman with a headscarf and a barbell says. Others deal with raising children, doing well at work, and making friendships with different kinds of people. To Rehab, jihad means that when you are “confronted with two choices, you make the right choice and not the easy one.”

Ads have already gone up on buses in Chicago and San Francisco, and will soon go up in 10 other major American cities and a handful of international ones, including London, Sydney and Melbourne. There’s a website, Facebook page and Twitter hashtag where people can share their own personal jihads.

On Monday, Egyptian activists working with the group even unfurled a giant banner in front of the main church in Cairo wishing a Merry Christmas (Coptic Christians celebrate the holiday on Jan. 7) in contravention of hard-line Islamic proclamations that Christmas should not be recognized.

That may not sound so scary, but the opposition has been predictably vitriolic. The group’s Twitter and Facebook pages have received hateful messages from hard-line Islamists. Geller, predictably, is exercised.

She has written at least a dozen posts using the campaign’s #myjihad hashtag, which currently represent about two out of every three posts on the front page of her influential anti-Muslim blog. Geller also seems determined to play a game of bait and switch to sabatoge [sic] the rival campaign. She registered the domain name MyJihad.us (the real URL ends in .org) and is even trying to run copycat ads that are clearly designed to be confused with Rehab’s.

In her ads, the peaceful Muslim is replaced with pictures of Osama bin Laden and the burning twin towers. She trying to get approval from the Chicago Transit Authority for the ads to appear on city buses, but they may be rejected for infringing on My Jihad’s copyright to the template.

Funny how Seitz-Wald never raised that possibility, and neither did anyone else, when MPAC parodied one of our earlier pro-freedom ads. In any case, parody is not forbidden by copyright, and Seitz-Wald doesn't tell you, and probably doesn't know, that the only thing that is parody about our ads is the design; the quotes featured in our ads are all real usages of the term jihad by Muslims, or related to such usages. Rehab's ads, by contrast, feature people using the term "jihad" in ways that have nothing to do with how the term has been traditionally understood in Islamic theology and law.

One would think that My Jihad is exactly the kind of moderate Muslim voice that Geller — who claims to be so threatened by Muslim “extremists” — would want to promote. But in reality, “the extremists on both sides need each other for validation. And we’re a threat to both,” Rehab said.

"Moderates" who support Hamas and dissemble about jihad's meaning as enunciated by mainstream Muslim authorities throughout history. I myself am skeptical as to whether Seitz-Wald is really dealing with a "moderate Muslim voice" here, but no skeptical thought ever crosses the smooth contours of his brain.

Rehab is the executive director of the Chicago chapter of the Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR),

Now he tells us. But with no mention of the group's links to Hamas or jihad terror, of course.

but he’s doing this on his own time and with separate funds to keep it a grass-roots effort.

Probably because the national office of Hamas-linked CAIR found his campaign too risible to support.

What started as a Facebook group less than a month ago has grown into a sophisticated public relations campaign that has already raised $20,000 and recruited dozens of volunteers, most of whom are “soccer moms” who don’t want their kids to feel intimidated at school because of their religion, Rehab said. “These are the army of My Jihad,” he quipped.

But can the popular conception of “jihad” really be changed with some ads and a hashtag?

“I would look at this conflict as I would any other product: We have an image problem,” said Arash Afshar, an Iranian-American marketing consultant who is not involved with the campaign. “This is exactly what Muslims should be doing … The way to combat an image problem is not to simply sit back and hope it goes away. You develop a branding strategy and motivate your already existing fan-base.”

If Afshar and Rehab really want to change the image of "jihad," they don't need to attack Pamela Geller; they need to convince the Muslims who believe it has to do with violence to change their views. That they're not making any effort to do that is telling.

Seitz-Wald concludes his article with a long and incoherent disquisition on how hard it will be for Rehab to change the meaning of "jihad." It is incoherent because Seitz-Wald repeatedly asserts that the idea that jihad involves violence is wrong, improper, a "hijacking" of the term, but it never occurs to him to wonder why, if this understanding is indeed so illegitimate, it is so entrenched. Or if it did occur to him, he banished the thought quickly, before the thought police could possibly get wind of his ideological deviation. He's a proper company man, and in this ridiculous hit piece he did a proper company job -- no real depth of thought or genuine analysis is needed for Salon. As long as the article portrays Pamela Geller and the counter-jihad effort as evil, evil, evil, that's good enough for the enlightened Leftist hatemongers and enemies of freedom that make up Salon's core audience.

There are just two problems with this: the negative perceptions that people may have of Islam originate not with conservative media, but with the hateful and violent actions that Muslims do in the name of Islam; and there is no actual rise in "Islamophobia." But Hamas-linked CAIR plays the victimhood card wherever and whenever it can, because victim status means political clout in 21st-century America.

"CAIR Rep Blames Conservative Media for Rise in 'Islamophobia,'" from IPT News, January 9:

Fox News and conservative media outlets are perpetuating an Islamophobic narrative that leads to a rise in anti-Muslim hate crimes, an attorney for the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), alleged in a recent interview with Russian Television (RT).

"There are people who are professionals whose main job is to say and do negative things about and against Muslims, these people have been now given wider stages, have been given more time on the air, on news media," CAIR legal counsel Nadhira Al-Khalili said. "For example, Fox News, as the gentleman stated before, has now been featuring many more Islamophobes than they ever had in the past, and we believe that the media has a direct correlation to the things that are happening in real life."

While there have been isolated attacks on Muslims by deranged individuals, law enforcement data fails to show the kind of alarming spike in attacks Al-Khalili and CAIR want people to believe is taking place.

From this, she jumps to a theory that there "is a small group of people who are profiting" by perpetuating bigotry against Muslims so that the American people will buy into the narrative and support Congressional funding for the expansion of the U.S. military and drone strikes to combat "the other."

Khalili states "Muslims are being portrayed as 'the other.'"

This type of sentiment illustrates CAIR's strategy – to propagate that the United States, the West, and key individuals are perpetuating a war on Islam, as opposed to a radical fringe of Islamists who exploit the religion for political goals.

This is a consistent pattern: Islamic supremacist spokesmen in the U.S. regularly make unsupported claims and then refuse to back them up. The most egregious example of this is the regularly-repeated Big Lie that counter-jihadists quote the Qur'an out of context, ignore or deny its peaceful passages, and generally misrepresent Islamic teaching -- the element that is lacking every time such claims are made is an interpretation of the Qur'an's violent passages, and an explanation of their "context," that renders them benign.

An update on this story. "CAIR chief claims Muslims discovered America first," by Neil Munro in the Daily Caller, January 4:

Muslims discovered the Americas long before Columbus sailed the ocean blue in 1492, the head of a D.C.-based jihad-linked Islamic lobbying group told a Saudi TV station Dec. 27.

“There are historical accounts according to which the Muslims preceded Columbus, who is said to have discovered the U.S.,” claimed Nihad Awad, the co-founder of the Council on American Islamic Relations.

“Some documents and accounts indicate that Muslim seafarers were the first to reach the U.S., [so] the bottom line is that Islam played a part in the establishment and development of the U.S.,” Awad told the Saudi interviewer, in an interview in a New York studio.

CAIR did not respond to The Daily Caller’s request for an explanation of Awad’s comments, which were recorded by the Middle East Media Research Institute.

Awad’s group bills itself as a “civil rights” group, but five of its former employees have been jailed or deported for terror offenses, and FBI officials refuse to meet Awad because of his ties to jihadi groups, such as Hamas....

MyJihadStayFit.jpg

The thoroughly mendacious Zahra Billoo of Hamas-linked CAIR says that it's a "misconception" that jihad means "armed struggle or holy war." She doesn't bother to explain why so many Muslims worldwide every day buy into this "misconception."

Jihad in Arabic does indeed mean “struggle,” and the Arabic word carries as many connotations as the English one. One may struggle to lose weight or to exercise regularly, and the same word is used for great struggles, such as those against Nazism and Communism. The Islamic Republic of Iran has a Department of Agricultural Jihad, which has nothing to do with blowing up farm implements, but merely concerns itself with the struggle to increase crop yields.

However, the principal meaning of jihad throughout Islamic history and in Islamic law is armed struggle against unbelievers to subjugate them as inferiors under the rule of Sharia. The four schools of Sunni Muslim jurisprudence are clear about jihad:

Shafi'i school: A Shafi'i manual of Islamic law that was certified in 1991 by the clerics at Al-Azhar University, one of the leading authorities in the Islamic world, as a reliable guide to Sunni orthodoxy, stipulates about jihad that “the caliph makes war upon Jews, Christians, and Zoroastrians...until they become Muslim or pay the non-Muslim poll tax.” It adds a comment by Sheikh Nuh ‘Ali Salman, a Jordanian expert on Islamic jurisprudence: the caliph wages this war only “provided that he has first invited [Jews, Christians, and Zoroastrians] to enter Islam in faith and practice, and if they will not, then invited them to enter the social order of Islam by paying the non-Muslim poll tax (jizya)...while remaining in their ancestral religions.” ('Umdat al-Salik, o9.8).

Of course, there is no caliph today, and hence the oft-repeated claim that Osama et al are waging jihad illegitimately, as no state authority has authorized their jihad. But they explain their actions in terms of defensive jihad, which needs no state authority to call it, and becomes "obligatory for everyone" ('Umdat al-Salik, o9.3) if a Muslim land is attacked. The end of the defensive jihad, however, is not peaceful coexistence with non-Muslims as equals: 'Umdat al-Salik specifies that the warfare against non-Muslims must continue until "the final descent of Jesus." After that, "nothing but Islam will be accepted from them, for taking the poll tax is only effective until Jesus' descent" (o9.8).

Hanafi school: A Hanafi manual of Islamic law repeats the same injunctions. It insists that people must be called to embrace Islam before being fought, “because the Prophet so instructed his commanders, directing them to call the infidels to the faith.” It emphasizes that jihad must not be waged for economic gain, but solely for religious reasons: from the call to Islam “the people will hence perceive that they are attacked for the sake of religion, and not for the sake of taking their property, or making slaves of their children, and on this consideration it is possible that they may be induced to agree to the call, in order to save themselves from the troubles of war.”

However, “if the infidels, upon receiving the call, neither consent to it nor agree to pay capitation tax [jizya], it is then incumbent on the Muslims to call upon God for assistance, and to make war upon them, because God is the assistant of those who serve Him, and the destroyer of His enemies, the infidels, and it is necessary to implore His aid upon every occasion; the Prophet, moreover, commands us so to do.” (Al-Hidayah, II.140)

Maliki school: Ibn Khaldun (1332-1406), a pioneering historian and philosopher, was also a Maliki legal theorist. In his renowned Muqaddimah, the first work of historical theory, he notes that “in the Muslim community, the holy war is a religious duty, because of the universalism of the Muslim mission and (the obligation to) convert everybody to Islam either by persuasion or by force.” In Islam, the person in charge of religious affairs is concerned with “power politics,” because Islam is “under obligation to gain power over other nations.”

Hanbali school: The great medieval theorist of what is commonly known today as radical or fundamentalist Islam, Ibn Taymiyya (Taqi al-Din Ahmad Ibn Taymiyya, 1263-1328), was a Hanbali jurist. He directed that “since lawful warfare is essentially jihad and since its aim is that the religion is God’s entirely and God’s word is uppermost, therefore according to all Muslims, those who stand in the way of this aim must be fought.”

Majid Khadduri was an Iraqi scholar of Islamic law of international renown. In his book War and Peace in the Law of Islam, which was published in 1955 and remains one of the most lucid and illuminating works on the subject, Khadduri says this about jihad:

The state which is regarded as the instrument for universalizing a certain religion must perforce be an ever expanding state. The Islamic state, whose principal function was to put God's law into practice, sought to establish Islam as the dominant reigning ideology over the entire world....The jihad was therefore employed as an instrument for both the universalization of religion and the establishment of an imperial world state. (P. 51)

Imran Ahsan Khan Nyazee, Assistant Professor on the Faculty of Shari'ah and Law of the International Islamic University in Islamabad. In his 1994 book The Methodology of Ijtihad, he quotes the twelfth century Maliki jurist Ibn Rushd: "Muslim jurists agreed that the purpose of fighting with the People of the Book...is one of two things: it is either their conversion to Islam or the payment of jizyah." Nyazee concludes: "This leaves no doubt that the primary goal of the Muslim community, in the eyes of its jurists, is to spread the word of Allah through jihad, and the option of poll-tax [jizya] is to be exercised only after subjugation" of non-Muslims.

"SF buses help teach what 'jihad' really means," by Ama Daetz for ABC7 News, January 3 (thanks to Pamela Geller):

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- Buses in San Francisco are carrying messages of jihad, but it's not what you might think. It's a campaign to educate residents about the real meaning of the word. It's a campaign that began in Chicago and has now reached the Bay Area.

One statement on the side of a Muni bus reads: "My jihad is to stay fit despite my busy schedule. What's yours?"

It's part of an educational campaign created by CAIR -- the Council on American-Islamic Relations. The group has put 35 ads on buses rolling through the streets of San Francisco.

"The intention of the campaign is to educate our fellow Americans about what the word jihad means," said Zahra Billoo, the executive director of the Bay Area office for the Council on American-Islamic Relations. She said, "A common misconception of the word jihad is that it means armed struggle or holy war and that is something that has been perpetrated by many who've made careers out of pushing anti-Muslim sentiment."

We asked some Muni riders if they knew the definition of jihad. Most of the answers we got were "a religious war" and "a holy war".

Miriam Webster also defines it as a holy war, but it lists a second definition -- one that Billoo says is much more appropriate.

"The proper meaning of jihad as many of us frequently describe it is to struggle. And that's it. For many, that is anything from building relationships with their neighbors to making it to work on time or doing better on their diets," said Billoo.

It's a meaning many don't know.

"I didn't know the definition either. It's interesting to be educated on it," said one Muni rider.

But Muni rider Nicholas Thomas doesn't know how big an impact the ads will make. He said, "I think for so long it's been ingrained in people's heads that it has such negative connotation, that I think that's sort of rooted in people and that for that idea to change, it would probably take a little bit more than just people talking about it."

Yes, it would take peaceful Muslims taking some real action against their coreligionists who further violent jihad. Meanwhile, the ads we have developed telling the truth about jihad are still awaiting approval in Chicago -- doubtless dhimmi officials are trying to figure out a way to block them:
