The place of Jesus' birth is almost completely Muslim now, after a concerted campaign to drive Christians out. From P. David Hornik in FrontPage: "Bethlehem’s Christians have been subject to discrimination and harassment and are abandoning the town to those aiming for an Islamic monolith in the Middle East."
The Islamists, among whom Yasser Arafat was a pioneer and is still at the forefront, want to drown the Judeo-Christian world in blood, and they’re succeeding. They’ve got Bethlehem and the Temple Mount, the parts of the Holy Land they control are almost empty of Christians and the Jews are supposed to be yanked out by their government, and they’re gunning for the rest. It may be that the Bush administration, out of a mix of geopolitical calculation and coziness with the Saudis and others, has a hand in making the Israeli government behave in ways that appear bizarre, suicidal, and criminally irresponsible. If Islamists can take over the town of Jesus’ birth, drive the Christians out, use it as a base to slaughter Jews in Jerusalem, and get away with it—we’re not doing well.

The Christians are leaving because the Joooos wouldn't let Arafat attend Christmas Mass in Bethlehem! :-)
Posted by: zorkmidden at March 1, 2004 10:58 AMI seem to remember that Israel yielded the town of Bethlehem to the Arabs. At the time, I thought it was a decision that many would live to regret, and I still think it. It was Israel who sold out a town that is of importance to both Judaism and Christianity. The irony is that the Israeli Arabs who are Christian side with the non-Christian Arabs in Judea and Samaria.
Posted by: helen at March 2, 2004 2:30 AMThe Christians in the Holy Land feel oppressed by the Isrealis because they are lumped in with the Muslims and thus experience the same retribution. They are oppressed by the majority of Muslims because they see Christians in the West giving unconditional support to Isreal. They feel abandoned by Christians in the West because we are ignorant of the fact that these Christians are the original decendents of our Christian Faith, and we have forgotten them and are ignorant to there plight.
