The University of Miami's Hurricane Online (thanks to Twostellas) reports that the Islamic call to prayer sounded last Friday from the university's bell tower.
At 12:50 p.m. last Friday, the Richter Library bell tower sounded, but passers-by heard something different than the normal hourly chime. Students and faculty squinted up at the tower, their interest piqued by the sound of a man chanting Adhan, the Muslim call to prayer. The Islamic Society of UM [ISUM] came up with the idea to play Adhan on Friday afternoons this March as part of Islam Awareness Month.
According to Sahar Ullah, president of ISUM, the goal of Islam Awareness Month is primarily to promote awareness about Islam on campus.
Is the University of Miami a public university? Do they broadcast Christian or Jewish prayers from the prayer tower -- uh, that is, bell tower? Just wondering.

So, how soon before ISUM begins demanding that women on campus wear the hijab, whether or not they're muslim?
Posted by: Helen at March 12, 2004 10:28 AMOUTRAGEOUS!!!
Posted by: Lilith at March 12, 2004 11:04 AMWheres the ACLU? Oh, I forgot, too busy pushing Nativity scenes and Christmas trees out of the public square.
Posted by: Susan at March 12, 2004 11:05 AMFrom the article:
"I hope people leave the [Taylor] lecture knowing that Muslim women wear the veil because they choose to, not because they are oppressed," Ullah said."
Yeah, say that to the Afghani and Iranian and Saudi women, you jerk...
And what about March being Islam Awareness month? September should be Islam Awareness month. It was on September 2001 that most of us saw the true face of Islam.
Posted by: zorkmidden at March 12, 2004 11:36 AMThis seems intrusive, and something that the ACLU should oppose (unless one pursues 'equal opportunity' for every group instead).
And, regardless of the church-state issue, I should think any broadcast call to prayer that would be effective, would also simulateously be too loud for community standards.

Posted by: Troy at March 12, 2004 11:41 AMIt is only fair to ask for the inclusion of Gregorian and Buddhist Chants now. After all we are an equal opportunity nation.
Posted by: David at March 12, 2004 12:48 PMACLU indeed is pushing nativity scenes and christmas trees out of the public eye and not saying anything about islam, for one and only one reason:
They do whatever they are being allowed to do and they are doing it to whomever they allow them to do so.
So if they are doing things to us,is only because we allow them to do so.
And if they don`t do anything against islam,it is only because muslims don`t allow them to.
It is as simple as that.
And America being a free country, nobody can stop any of us from making our voices heard....but ourselves.
It is our fault, yours, mine and everyone`s else, and if we are not going to make a stand, whatever will happen to us and to our country,we deserve it.
Adela,USA.
and who is going to speak up against this? and if they do - we all know that CAIR will be called in due to hate speech, etc labelling those who do stand up as Islamophobes, etc - University of Miami should allow equal access to all religious groups on campus - or none!
jihan
Correct....call or write the Univ. of Miami and insist on equal time for other religions as well.
Posted by: milford at March 12, 2004 7:40 PMUM is a private university. The president of the university is Donna Shalala. You know who she is. (Full disclosure: I was born and raised in Miami and my uncle was a meteorologist/professor at UM. Tales of shenanigans at that place are not news to me.)
Posted by: Andrea Harris at March 12, 2004 10:13 PMDonna Shalahla was the head of the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus back in the 80's. I believe she served in the Clinton Administration for a period of time during his first, maybe second term.
If you know anything about UW-Madison, it is a very liberal university. Dr. Shalahla is very liberal as well.
Can someone post or send me the phone number to the University of Miami, the Florida ACLU and Gov. Jeb Bush's office.
Christian and Jewish groups at the University should be outraged. This is the promotion of a religion not a group.

Posted by: John at March 13, 2004 12:00 PMThe UM gets federal funds so it is subject to federal equal rights and prohibitions etc. Donna Shalala is of Lebanese heritage - she was Chancellor of UW-Madison when I went to school there. Yes she is a liberal. She was the Secretary of Health and Human Services in the Clinton Administration (Tommy Thompson's job now -- also from Wisconsin - former Gov. for 16 years)
I agree, where is the ACLU? You want to know what living under Sharia law is like in a jihadist fundementalist state? Come to the forum at FAU-Boca Raton sponsored the the student Human Rights Organization and hear first hand how Saudi Arabia -- continue holding American women and children against their wills -- torturing them and abusing them -- and our government looks the other way -- Meet an american woman -- also from Wisconsin -- who suffered for 10 years in Saudi arabia at the hands of her Saudi husband and only got her one daughter out with the help of 60 minutes last year. Event is April 4 (sunday) at the Friedberg Auditorium 3 - 5:30 pm - email fauhroboca@yahoo.com for details.
Do a web search for the numbers you want. It's easy.
Posted by: Emily at March 13, 2004 9:03 PMnon moslems, like those at the U of Miami, who accommodate, or defend the islamist just don't realize that their act which they think is a sign of tolerance, is taken by the islamists as a weakness which they (the islamists) are taking advantage of.
The majority of moslems in the US are immigrants, newcomers, yet they have all the freedom they want to practice their religion, built their mosques (the bigger the better and the more obvious even better, like building them on major roads), etc. while the christians in these same immigrants' home countries are being persecuted. These christians are natives, not newcomers/immigrants like the majority of moslems in the US, yet their churches have been burned, their people killed, they're banned from building new churches ....... the list goes on and on. It is not jus the government's policies, but it is also the attitude of their moslem fellow citizens. You'd think that the 'moderate' moslems would come to the defense of the christians, since that kind of treatment is against basic human rights. The tolerant/moderate moslems do exist, but few and far between, and they're too afraid to speak out, since the reasons given by the oppressor moslems are that what they're doing are what is commanded them by their religion. And, sad to say, that is the truth.
Having lived in a moslem country and knowing a lot (too much) about the moslem religion, I must say that unless there is a revisionist view of the current moslem holy book by the moslems, believe you me, we're not going to see an end to the moslem aggression.
And what are the chances of that to happen? Nil at best, since they believe that every single word in their book is God's own. So how could they go against their God's words?
I'm telling y'all that that is the truth.
Don't people know that the islamists's first allegiance is to their religion and their fellow moslems, just as what is taught by their book. So, I'm asking what business do they have living in the States? If people don't keep their pledge (allegiance to this great US of A), doesn't it make them traitors? And shouldn't we send those traitors back to where they came from??????
