THE dusty Berhampur Central jail, 120 miles north of Calcutta, provided the setting for a bizarre wedding last week between a rapist and his victim.The victim faced a life as an outcast, ostracised and stigmatised by Indian society for being on the receiving end of a violent sexual crime.
But if her assailant married her, the shame would be lifted in the eyes of the local Muslim community.
On the order of the court in Berhampur, Ahammad Shaikh, 30, tied the knot with Sabina Khatoon, 18, inside the local prison where he is serving his sentence.
Shaikh kidnapped Khatoon - the daughter of a daily wage labourer - from her village and raped her in a nearby forest in March this year.
After her father complained of the rape to the police in June, Shaikh was arrested. In the court he admitted having raped the teenager and was sent to prison for the deed.
Shaikh’s lawyers failed to bail him out and he expected to be handed at least a seven-year sentence within a few months.
Then, with permission from the court, an activist carrying out work among rural women, approached Shaikh inside the jail and informed him of the woman’s miseries after being ‘tainted’ by his rape.
The women’s rights activist suggested that Shaikh marry Khatoon. Shaikh said that he needed time to respond to the overture.
The court also said that if Shaikh came forward to marry Khatoon, it could consider his case with sympathy and a possible release.
Shaikh’s lawyers and Khatoon’s parents then petitioned the court that the defendant was willing to marry Khatoon, and they sought his release from the jail for the purpose of the marriage.
The court observed that it could never release Shaikh until he married his victim. However, it ordered that the two could get married inside the prison if they wanted.
As bride, Khatoon turned up in the jail with her relatives. In the presence of Shaikh’s relatives, the jailhouse wedding took place according to the Muslim rites, followed by a registration.
The jail officials and about 60 remand prisoners took part in the marriage celebrations, which included a feast.
"I took advantage of her weakness and assaulted her while she was alone. What I did was wrong," the apparently repentant Shaikh said at the end of the ceremony.
"Now I am happy to get a chance to make amends for the crime I have committed."
Khatoon, who looked very happy after the marriage, said: "For that act [of rape] I hated him. Sometimes I felt like I wanted to tear him to pieces.
"But I have a different feeling for him now. I have forgiven him because he has chosen me as his wife. I have to love him now."

I don't think this is a laughing matter.
Actually this rape victim marrying the rapist is not specifically a Muslim thing. Until recently in Peru they had the same law (rapists got off if they married their victims).
Having said that it is likely to happen in backward, rigid societies, and Muslim societies are among the worst of those.
Basically it's a patriarchal bit of shit that should have died out in any decent society. But in a society governed by sharia it may be here to stay.

The villagers and her parents should be in jail for submitting to such a warped mindset...

All cultural values are of equal merit. The action taken here was a wise and judicious response in this cultural milieu. Obviously, if people of a similar cultural background move to Western countries, we must allow them to have access to the same wise and judicious legal decisions. After all, Western culture is no better or worse than Islamic culture.

Hey, just a moment! What happened to all the pure
values of Islam?? Rape only happens in decadent West, doesn't it...So Pakistan that PURE Muslim country has one of the highest incidents of Rape -
obviously the Rapists aren't marrying their victims there. The poor girl in India knows her future is bleak as 'damaged goods' : she has no
welfare agencies or any real protection and knows

Don't be surprised if a Muslim judge suspends his 7-year prison sentence because he has "made amends."

I read recently of a case where several men were held in jail for YEARS on the allegation of a rape victim that later turned out to be false (they were held for a long time even after she confessed that she made it up.) But Muslims clamour and whine for "their own" religimous crap to take precendence.

Then again, in a gdmf-Muslim culture, if four adult Muslim men don't testify that there was a rape... then there WASN'T a rape.

Wow, Keith, I think that's a first, a quadruple post!
I like the appelation "gdmf" for the Mohammedan faith - it has a bunch of uses too, for Reza - he/she/it can simply use one abbreviation instead of multiples: "Allah(gdmf)..." or "Mohammed(gdmf)..." Just one muscle memory (or clipboard paste string) to work with!
I agree wholeheartedly with you. Not sure about juries here in CA however - they might not agree with violence, however justified.

Doesn't sound like a ringing endorsement on her side for the marriage does it? "Oh gee... I'm tainted goods. I guess I have to love him now" - sigh.
Too bad the father didn't take a shotgun and blow a hole through his chest. If anyone wanted to send a message to those attempting to do such a thing in the future, that would get the point across quite nicely. But, of course, being as they came from a Muslim society, maybe the father didn't care as much for his daughter's virtue. She was just a woman after all.
