In a display of political correctness, San Jose, Calif.'s police chief has promised to observe the Muslim month of Ramadan.Chief Rob Davis told the San Jose Mercury News that he was inspired after speaking to 7,000 Bay Area Muslims last year at the end of Ramadan, Islam's holy month of fasting.
He will join local Muslims in going without food and drink from sunrise to sunset during the monthlong observance of Ramadan because he realized during his speech that they were hungry when he was not.
He said they were celebrating an experience he knew nothing about.
"It just dawned on me," he recalled. "If I am truly going to understand the nuances of this religion, I should join them in this fast."
During Ramadan, Davis said, he plans to break the fast each night with a different Muslim family, who will be invited to dine at his home.
The newspaper reported that the chief's decision "carries enormous weight with Muslims, who remain worried about racial profiling, continued backlash from the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks" and a recent fatal police shooting of a Bosnian Muslim outside a coffee shop in San Jose.
"It is a remarkable gesture," James Zogby, president of the Arab American Institute, an advocacy group in Washington, D.C., told the News. "The fact that a major law enforcement figure in the country is making this gesture will help bridge some of the gaps in this country."
The chief, a Mormon, told the News his decision to observe Ramadan is not motivated by politics or publicity but by a desire to "truly understand."
Davis made the commitment when he was the deputy police chief and now, as the chief, he believes fasting can help him connect with a community that is growing in the area.
"Everyone needs to know that the chief is the chief for everybody - not just the majority, not just for those in power," Davis, 47, said. "I need to be a chief for everybody, particularly for those who've felt marginalized."

What idiocy! How will he "truly understand" Islam by skipping two meals daily and gorging himself at the evening meal during Ramadan?
There are better ways to connect with Islam and learn about its traditions, especially the predominate ones with less noble nuances.
Maybe his next attempt to empathize with muslims will be to participate in jihad; what better way to truly experience the glory of Islam?

Why wasn't I surprised when I read that he is a Mormon. It takes a cult member to know another cult member. BTW, I have a nephew who has a lovely Mormon girlfriend who has almost been completely de-programmed. We've had discussions about this religion.

OT, but everyone please take note:
Ramadan begins either Friday the 15th or Saturday the 16th (I have found numerous sites claiming to confirm either). I know this is based on the earliest sighting of the new crescent moon, so it must be faily late on the 15th...
With all the sudden action Mr. Spencer has been listing here in the US today, I have to wonder if/what and when things are going to hit the fan. Big 'If' I know, keep your fingers crossed...

What a joke.
I spent considerable time during last years Ramadan with some Yemeni friends.
They set their alarms in the morning so they can get up before the sun does (about 6:30 - 7am here in England at this time of year) And have a massive breakfast.
The sun goes down at around 4pm.
The women have been cooking nearly all afternoon, and at the exact time according to their 'sunset time chart' bring out the biggest feast you've laid your eyes on, and continue to trough all through the evening.
A lot of them actually put weight on over the month.

I tried an experiment today.
I printed a small sign that says NO ISLAM KNOW PEACE
I put this in the rear window of my truck and took off for lunch. While leaving a local fast food restaurant I noticed an suv tailgating me and driving real erratic, so I put the pedal to the carpet and merged onto the freeway at about 80mph, looked in the rear view and there is this suv. He passes me and I notice he looks middle eastern. Maybe I have an overactive imagination but this suv who couldnt wait to get around me, and now just sits 2 car lengths in front of me matching my speed at about 70mph... I wonder to myself, will I piss off some peace loving American Moslem enough to practice jihad on me?
Maybe then and only then will America wake up to Islam and the enemy among us....
The safest city in America may not be so safe anymore!!

The Qur'an does not condone offensive fighting.

The only 'gap' we care about is: the gap between a "religion" thinking it has the right to commit mass murder, and the rest of the world who thinks this is disgusting and unjustifiable and wants it to stop.
Why should the police chief care if the Muslims he was speaking to last year were hungry or not? If they were high on dope, should he toke up too? This guy has been spending way too much time with those multiculti fairies at the bottom of the garden. He's a police chief, in charge of cops and policing the community. What is unfortunate is your arrogance. We resent having our intelligence insulted with your blatant lies. We can read, ok? We have read the Quran; difficult as it was, senseless as it is, we managed to trudge through it without going blind or developing incurable stomach ulcers.
In addition to the magnificent Quran, we have also read Islam's co-scriptures; the mind-boggling Sunnah (Book of Jihad was my personal favorite). So we KNOW that offensive war is the very soul of Islam. Take a hike.

Whilst the second Sura deals with retalitory fighting, Suras 8 & 9 deal with offensive.
And, as we all know, under the "law of Allah couldn't make his mind up" ooops, sorry; "law of abbrogation" Suras 8 & 9 get the final say.
" Say to those who have disbelieved, if they cease (from disbelief) their past will be forgiven. But if they return (thereto), then the examples of those (punished) before them have already preceded (as a warning).
And fight them until there is no more Fitnah (disbelief and polytheism: i.e. worshipping others besides Allâh) and the religion (worship) will all be for Allâh Alone [in the whole of the world[]]. But if they cease (worshipping others besides Allâh), then certainly, Allâh is All-Seer of what they do"
Sura 8:38-39.
Another example from the Hadith;
Saheeh Muslim - 1765
Narrated Abi Hurayrah:
"While we were at the Mosque, the Messenger of Allah (SAW) came to us and said,
"Go to the Jews."
So we went out with him until we arrived. So the Messenger of Allah (SAW) stood up and called on them,
"O ye Jewish people, become Muslims and you will be safe."
They replied,
"You have delivered [your message] O Aba Al-Qasim [Mohammad's Kunyah (title)]."
So he said to them,
"That [delivering the message] is what I want. Become Muslims and you will be safe."
They replied,
"You have delivered [your message] O Aba Al-Qasim [Mohammad's Kunyah (title)]."
So he repeated what he said for the third time and said,
"Know that the land is for Allah and his Messenger, and I want to exile you from this land. So let him he who finds something valuable in his possession sell it; or know that the land is for Allah and his Messenger."
ie. m12390, The Jews here had done nothing wrong (except of course the grave sin of refusing to become Muslims) and this, in Muhammeds mind, gave him a free ticket to kill them and force them from their homes.

As far as the Hadith is concerned, that body of literature was written 200+ years after the passing away of the Beloved Prophet.
I am not interested in A heard from B who heard it from C who heard it from D who heard it from E who heard it from F who recalls what the Prophet might have said/done.

Well, please wake up and smell the coffee m12390, The remaining 90% of Muslims, your Sunni 'brothers' accept the Hadith as authoratative.
You have to obey the Qur'an as the word of allah, The Hadith are the words of Muhammed, which, according to Sura 33:36, and Sura 4:80 you also have to obey.
Maybe you should have checked all this out before signing up to a cult that you can only get out of by the death penalty?

Has anyone considered that there may actually be a good "police work" motive for this action?
I mean, sure, on the face of it it does look like a sickening PC attempt to suck up to the muslims, but maybe it's really an acknowledgement that at least certain elements in the local muslim community may pose a current or future threat?
I find it hard to believe having the police in the good books of the muslim community is a bad move.
If his motive is solely to "truly understand", umm, has he ever heard of "reading a book"? (Or is that considered too much work these days?)
