They are attacking female students because of the dictates of the Sharia -- in other words, for the same reason they are attacking Iraqi Christians: they want both groups to resume the subservient places dictated for them by Islamic law. And note that non-Muslim women are also being forced by these threats to wear the veil. From the Washington Times, with thanks to EPG:
BAGHDAD — Islamist extremists are targeting the city's universities by threatening and even attacking female students who wear Western-style fashions, setting off bombs on campuses and demanding that classes be segregated by sex.At least 1,000 of an estimated 3,000 women who want to postpone their studies for fear of violence will be granted leaves of absence, a student affairs official here said.
Guards at al-Kindi University in Baghdad last week arrested a man carrying nearly 10 pounds of TNT in a bag.
"The terrorist admitted that he belongs to an Islamic group," university security chief Sameer al-Sumaidai said. "When we asked him about the one who sent him, he replied, 'It is God who sends me.' "Pamphlets found on campus declared: "If the boy students don't separate from the girl students, we will explode the college. Any girl student who does not wear a veil, we will burn her face with chemicals."
At Mustansiriya University, a bomb exploded earlier this month in the college of sciences, injuring two students, one seriously.
The explosion occurred shortly after pamphlets also appeared on that campus demanding that men and women students be separated and that women abandon Western clothing and cover their heads when in public.
Two days later, student Rana Fuad was abducted as she was leaving the campus. Within an hour, the young woman, still dressed in blue jeans, was found unconscious at the college gate.
Miss Fuad stopped going to classes and refuses to talk to the press.
"Rana is in bad psychological condition," friend Sheatheh Ahmed said. "She was kidnapped by three masked men who told her they would burn her face with chemicals if she puts on such clothes again, and that this was her last chance."
The campaign of intimidation already is leading to an exodus of students from campuses.
"According to the reports of the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, 3,000 women students want to postpone their studies for this academic year because of the lack of security and the threats," said Ali Abdul Zahra, the official in charge of student affairs in Baghdad.
He said the ministry will approve leaves of absence for at least 1,000 women.
Some female students feel obliged to wear the veil when going to and from school for fear they will be identified and targeted by terrorists watching outside the gates.
Even non-Muslim women, who are not normally expected to cover their heads in a strict Islamic society, do not escape the threats, students said.
Vian Kiryakus, a Christian electrical-engineering student at Baghdad University, wears a veil outside the college when waiting for her father to give her a ride home.
"I have no choice but to wear the veil; the terrorists keep watching and targeting the unveiled girl students," Miss Vian said.
"The terrorists get more powerful day by day," said Fadwa, a Christian chemical-sciences student at Baghdad University who asked to be identified only by a single name. "They can put their threats into practice. I'm afraid of them because I know what they mean by 'chemical liquid.' "

And European Leftists still claim we have nothing to fear from Islamism, only "certain extremist strands":
http://blog.bearstrong.net/001465.html
The many faces of Islamism
Islamists are far from as faithful to tradition as many believe. Khomeini even broke with classical Islam in the area that probably was closest to his heart, the Islamic legislation. Before the Iranian revolution he categorically stated that the holy law, sharia, could only be implemented when religious judges where completely free from state influence. After the revolution a centralised and state-based juridical structure was retained. The word "fundamentalist" falsely suggests stiff, orthodox ideas, a clinging to tradition and a flat-out denial of new ideas. Khomeini was, though he often denied it, highly flexible. Classical shia-Muslim concepts where disregarded and replaced with ideas and slogans from the non-Muslim world. The result, as Ervand Abrahamian writes in his essay collection “Khomeinism”, was closer to Latin-American populism than to fundamentalism.
While one should be careful with historical parallels, it can be interesting to look at the many similarities between Islamism and political Marxism in Western political history. In the last few years Islamism has gotten a “social-democratic” branch of its own. The last election in Turkey was won by the Party of Justice and Development (AKP), a party with Islamist roots. Under their rule, Turkey wants a European Union membership, and has conducted a series of democratic reforms. While the country has a long way to go, especially concerning minorities, it is today ironically the secular Kemalists who play the role of reactionaries in the country today, while the “Islamists” are promoting reforms towards a – that's right – Western-styled liberal democracy.
It is tempting to wish for such an Islamism also in Arab countries, and perhaps we can already see it. In the September edition of the Washington Report of Middle East Affairs, Charley Reese points out an interesting fact: most of the reformists in the Middle East the last years have been Islamists, and sometimes even Islamic fundamentalists. They have provided social services where the governments have failed and has often been they who demand democratic elections and honest government.

And these are the people our "anti-war" protesters are siding with ! Great piece over at "iraq the model" blog site where a pro-democracy Iraqi (yes, Kerry, Moore etc. they DO exist) reports how the terrorists in Iraq are now threatening all civil servants with beheading if they don't go on strike. It's mind boggling to think that the Left are supporting these anti-women, anti-education, anti-gay, anti-christian, anti-peace, anti-prosperity islamic thugs. Where are the BBC reports on these threats against women students ? Oh that's right - it doesn't fit into the BBC's pro-islamic view of the world so it doesn't exist.

Still the monkey-in-chief says "Freedom's on the March!"
Oh yeah Gary, I really trust Newsmax.

I am sure Al Qaeda Kerry would do a much better job! Maybe he would make the food blister head of state... Flush the John’s...
kj
Read the article it is about a newsweek article not a newsmax article... but maybe you think newsweek and the house of Bush are in cahoots! Maybe he took Saudi money that came from OBL and Syria to payoff newsweek reporters so they would run Pro-Bush articles. did you think that Islam would rollover and just let us make Iraq a democratic state without a fight? If so, you are not as smart as I gave you credit for! It is very stupid to think that Iraq would have true freedom in such a short time. This Country took much longer to become a free Nation.. I just don’t understand why Iraq is having problems, It shouldnt take more than a few hours to take them from stone-age to modern day!!
Great link, Gary....

Thanks Bar. KJ has just proved by that 'newsmax' comment that CONTENT means nothing to Leftist thinking. Labels do.

Son of Albion: And these are the people our "anti-war" protesters are siding with!
Yes, and the anti-war, and anti-American people don't easily change their opinion when exposed to facts like these. It is amazing to what lengths they go with finding excuses, everything from the terrorists' sad but understandable desperation to their legitimate right to protect their country and their "culture" (in other words, blame the Americans). Ironically, among the progressive, left-green academic youth it is the "feminists" and womens' studies people who are most eager to defend this brutality against women, because in women's studies, postmodernist relativism has literally become a religion - this means, among other things, that the cultural purity of the "others" is more important than the lives and dignity of the women they brutalize. As if the women weren't part of "them"; it is almost as if they can blame themselves for being stupid enough to endorse the "western imperialist" values.
There was a call on a women's studies mailing list over here recently, to demonstrate against worldwide oppression of women and gays in the name of religion. Do I need to add that the protests were directed against the Catholic church?

Stories like this make you wonder why there aren't more people in the dar al-Islam who hate Islam.

I post this even if I do not know if it is the right thread.
Again I have to point out that I am a Swede that means that we eventually have a different perspective most because I see what is going on in my country you see what is going on in yours.
The Scandinavian countries once was infected by the communist disease, not saying any of them really got a communist regime but close. It was the proper way to handle the Soviets, close your eyes and agree. What you discuss between four eyes is not for public consumption, express yourself to clearly and you might go to jail.
This behavior somehow got rooted and today it is Islam. Together with the political correctness that has infected most of the western world the old habits are still there. Never admit the problem, if you are forced to do so blame your native population never the immigrant even if you know that is not true.
Those who can express themselves are the immigrants. I remember a paper written for the final exam by a student at a university here in Sweden. She was a former Muslim from Kosovo and the sentence I remember said: “The problem is that the government is pampering the immigrants so much that they are allowed to form their own society within the society and with government funds. What is needed is a rethinking of the whole problem, it is not good enough to aim for ‘integration’, the demand from the society shall be ‘assimilation’. If the culture you came from had so many virtues that you can not assimilate into your new country then you shall immediately return to where you came from with or without help from the government.”
Do I have to explain that she had to do her exam all over again? This was to harsh words even from an immigrant.
We have to many PC and ignorant people and the main problem is to get them properly educated. How to do that is a riddle to me.
This afternoon I had a visit by a “Muslim” girl in her 30’s. She has secretly married a Christian and she is scared stiff that her family will find out. She want to cut her ties but is too afraid to do it, as her life is a stake. We took a couple of hours to go through this site and she said to almost every comment “How true!”.
Islam is the biggest threat to mankind you can find – fight with all means!
And to all (mostly) who post on this site – keep up the good work, you are needed.

Treatment suffered by Miss Vian and others is horrific but unless women's safety can be guaranteed better to hide under a veil - would myself under these circumstances! Detest the way these Islamo thugs intimidate and threaten women and how disgusting that they want to burn women's faces with chemicals - hatred of women is allowed full scope under under monstrous Sharia Law.

Yes, this is detestable and what is even more so is the aiding and abetting that the liberal, politically correct "intelligentsia" give these bastards! I have tried to understand this kind of suicidal thinking and all I can come up with is that they are cowards, COWARDS!
Where is the so-called western feminist movement anywhere in the f*cking world that speaks out and condemns this? Are they are so busy humiliating women with their "vagina dialogues" that they can't be bothered with the rape and slavery of women and children in Islam? Where is Barbara Striesand, Susan Sarandon, and Jane Fonda? Moral relativism is a mental disease.
Phony hypocrites!

If there is a lesson to be learned from the 20th century it must be that never assume that your enemy's enemy is your friend, and in fact can turn out to be a far deadlier threat.
However this is just the very mistake that the leftists are making now, in that they assume that they can work with militant Muslims because they share the same desire to destroy America and capitalism.
This is why they are loath to speak out, assuming that is that they even care in the first place.

So the brave warriors of Islam not only behead people that are tied up and out numbered about 5-1 ,now these thugs feel powerful threatening Female and want to destroy their right to educate themselves and see how oppressive Islam is.
Poor Islam,it tries to keep the people ignorant and in poverty just to help control them with the promise Allah will give you a victory through Peace and Justice.

I can just imagine what the open day at uni would be like if the islamists were in charge.
"Welcome everyone to friendly Islamofascist university. Women cover up or we rip your faces off".
Wow...such mastery of P.R.(personal relations). A picture of a womans face melting away from acid would be such a great advertisment to attract foreign students to campus!!!
The loony left students would love it. They will say "hey don't knock melting peoples faces off with acid...they have a right to melt womans faces off becuase they say it is their culture!!!"

I'm old enough to remember the Silly Sixties and Stupid Seventies. It seems that the up and coming revolutionary movement has taken a leaf from the book of the Leftists of yesteryear--and in a generation will ensure that mastery of Qu'ran and hadith are sine qua non for academic rigor in all fields.
Also, I'm out of the closet. I'm a RACIST. Sure, I don't mind people of a different skin color, and will even work under them or welcome them into my family should they marry in or get adopted; but I feel obliged to stand against the PC Left and the Islamofascist thugs they are now defending.

Kemaste asks,
Where is the so-called western feminist movement anywhere in the f*cking world that speaks out and condemns this?
Let me try to offer some answers (based on experience from US as well as Europe): they are too busy, not just with Vagina monologues, but also with
- questioning the reality of the existence of men and women (when talking gender issues);
- worrying for the rights of Muslim men in Guantanamo and Abu Ghraib (when talking human rights issues);
- protesting against religious oppression of women in the Catholic church (when talking about violations of women's human rights in the name of God);
- and, when it comes to Muslim women, fighting for their "right" to COVER THEIR FACES wherever they "choose" to do so.
See this news from Italy as an example of the last case:
