Iran: Girl With Mental Age of Eight Given Death Sentence After Mother Forced Her Into Prostitution From Early Age

From Amnesty International, with thanks to Twostellas:

A 19-year old girl, “Leyla M”, who has a mental age of eight, reportedly faces imminent execution for “morality-related” offences after being forced into prostitution by her mother as a child. According to a Tehran newspaper report of 28 November, she was sentenced to death by a court in the central Iranian city of Arak and the sentence has now been passed to the Supreme Court for confirmation.

Leyla M was reportedly sentenced to death on charges of “acts contrary to chastity” by controlling a brothel, having intercourse with blood relatives and giving birth to an illegitimate child. She is to be flogged before she is executed. She had apparently “confessed” to the charges. Earlier reports stated that there would be an appeal, and the 28 November report indicates that this process is now at an end.

Social workers have reportedly tested her mental capacities repeatedly and each time have found Leyla to have a mental age of eight. However, she has apparently never been examined by the court-appointed doctors, and was sentenced to death solely on the basis of her explicit confessions, without consideration of her background or mental health.

Leyla was forced into prostitution by her mother when she was eight years old, according to the 28 November report, and was raped repeatedly thereafter. She gave birth to her first child when she was nine, and was sentenced to 100 lashes for prostitution at around the same time. At the age of 12, her family sold her to an Afghan man to become his “temporary wife”. His mother became her new pimp, “selling her body without her consent”.

At the age of 14 she became pregnant again, and received a further 100 lashes, after which she was moved to a maternity ward to give birth to twins. After this “temporary marriage”, her family sold her again, to a 55-year-old man, married with two children, who had Leyla’s customers come to his house.

The newspaper report makes no mention of her family or the men to whom she was married. In Iranian law, in a case of “intercourse with a blood relative” both parties are considered culpable, but only Leyla M has been referred to in the reports of which Amnesty International is aware.

The numbers... there's always a lot in the numbers.

It should come as no surprise that a girl who is whored by her mother, raped repeatedly, and was given 100 lashes as "justice" would have her ability to mentally mature be SERIOUSLY stunted.

The only question on the minds of the Iranian Mullahs is how they can make this out to be some kind of Zionist plot.

Posted by: kj [TypeKey Profile Page] at December 13, 2004 1:12 PM

I feel so sorry for her. I wish the hell of her life could be undone and she could find peace.

We should not be surprised. There are no provisions for reconcilliation and forgivness with God in Islam, unlike Christianity.

Not to mention a preponderance of the circumstances. How can a mentally tramautized and defecient child, pimped by her mother and forced into a life embodying the most evil degree of base human nature not be shown mercy, love and understanding, rather than Islamic law which mandates her death in a symbolic execution designed to erase the shame and blame of allowing such things to exist in the first place?

This must be one of the most apalling 'travesties of justice' of all time.WE SHOULD PROTEST OUR OUTRAGE AND HORROR FROM ROOFTOPS.The terrible things which have happened to Leyla already would melt hearts of stone yet not those of wicked Mullahs who having condoned the exploitation of this poor girl now want her KILLED! I spit upon the filthy cult of Islam which barbarously uses girl children, rapes babies,flogs and stones victims to hideous death...

Just another case that will go unnoticed by Western (US as well as European) academic feminists who are still too busy fighting for Muslim women's right to wear burqas and against the "imperialist" idea that women in Islamic countries should have some rights, too...

Yet another fine example to add to the list of victims of the the "infinitely compassionate and merciful" cult of islam. /

I have yet to read an article that would give credence to indicate existence of a thread of compassion or mercy.

Leyla M. gave birth to three children . . .the twins were born after (if not because of) the second lashings . This article mentions that Leyla was examined by Iranian 'social workers'. I apologise if this sounds like a silly question, but. . .

Do Iranian social workers' ideals resemble western social workers' ideals ? Has there been any intervention on behalf of these vulnerable children - as an effort to protect the children from this horrendous cycle of abuse?

Without reading about such protection, one is led to believe that by not prosecuting Leyla's mother, husband and mother-in-law, they are then free to exploit the innocents.

Regardless, this is one really sick culture.

How about organizing a demo outside the Iranian Embassy

Posted by: shiva [TypeKey Profile Page] at December 13, 2004 2:47 PM

this would have more effect making more people aware of the sickness and dangers of islam than long discussions concerning wallies like Lesvine

send X-Mas cards to Leyla M.
C/o the Iranian Embassy
while about it,a card for the young lad that was flogged to death a few weeks ago

The Islamic Republic of Iran is the archetypal model of an Islamic society that implements "Sharia Law" - and our leaders (at least those in Europe) want stronger diplomatical relations with this regime. There shouldn't be any Iranian Embassies. Countries like Iran should be isolated, their goods boycotted and their leaders should be put under extreme political pressure. Are there any people with decent morals left or is it just the small band of contributors to jihadwatch.org who are still mentally sane? I'm really wondering...

Temporary "marriages"... how vile. Who came up with that idea?

Posted by: Border Collie [TypeKey Profile Page] at December 13, 2004 3:56 PM

Sad story.

How rare is it for a girl to be of child bearing age at 9??? Isn't this girl something like one in a million in that respect? I've never heard of sexual maturity so early...does it indicate a physiological problem? Or was the age of 9 inaccurate?

Posted by: ed [TypeKey Profile Page] at December 13, 2004 4:30 PM

Ed:
re giving birth at 9 yrs.

It might not be so rare for girls to menstruate at that age, I went to school with 2 girls who started to menstruate at between 9 and 10.
it may have been that she was nearer 10 than 9 when you take into consideration the gestation period of 9 months.
Having said that it's probably unlikely she gave birth at 9 OR even 10 years old.

It's deplorable, disgusting and seriously depraved.
I wouldn't insult animals to call these people animals, because animals behave a hell of a lot better than many humans.
That poor girl !!!. it's the adults that should be sentenced not her.
THE SHAMELESS BASTARDS !!

disallusioned German -- I agree with you totally -- total boycott, isolate, etc., would be great

shiva -- if it were your daughter the Iranians were about to execute, would you tell people -- as you did in one of your comments above -- to send xmas cards to her even though xmas cards will annoy the executioners you are presumably trying to save her from?

If people really want to save Leyla, they won't send xmas cards to her. Below is the Amnesty International information to help you take action on this issue plus the Iranian addresses, fax numbers, emails, etc. If you believe the death penalty IS sometimes a valid punishment, then simply do not use that aspect of AI's suggested message below:

Recommended Action from Amnesty Int'l on Leyla:

Please send appeals to arrive as quickly as possible, in English, Arabic, French, Persian or your own language:
· expressing concern at reports that Leyla M has been sentenced to death for offences committed when she was a child, pointing out that she has been found to have a mental age of eight and urging the authorities to carry out an urgent review of her case;
· calling on the Supreme Court to ensure that Article 41 of the draft law on the Establishment of Children's Courts has been implemented, which requires social workers and psychiatrists to examine defendants such as Leyla M;
· reminding the Head of the Judiciary that passing a death sentence on Leyla M would violate the International Convention on Civil and Political Rights, to which Iran is a state party;
· asking for details of the trial proceedings and any appeals related to her case;
· seeking assurances that the authorities will uphold their obligation to ensure that Leyla M is represented by a lawyer who is able to act in her best interests;
· calling for Leyla M to be granted access to any medical treatment that she may need;
· stating your unconditional opposition to the death penalty, as the ultimate cruel, inhuman and degrading punishment and violation of the right to life;
· expressing concern and dismay that Amnesty International has recorded 10 executions of child offenders in Iran since 1990, three of them in 2004, and calling on the Iranian authorities to immediately halt further executions of child offenders.

In case I haven't been clear: In using the template from AI in the comment above to send a protest letter to the Iranian government about Leyla's case, be polite to Iranian officials (that is if you really care about saving her life).

Posted by: ed [TypeKey Profile Page] at December 13, 2004 5:23 PM

And to think that when President George Bush included Iran in his axis of evil speech so many academics and leftists whinged and objected.
Why should anyone with a conscience defend the regimes that mutilate and butcher children, the innocent and the weak? Where are these people’s consciences? Sitting under the 800 pound gorilla of their failed utopian ideologies? That is something the Iranian mullahs' and western ideolgues share in common.

Any time I hear this sort of news from Iran, it's as if we're in some sort of time warp. This is the sort of thing you'd expect to read about in some history book, about the goings-on in the 12th century or something. Not today. Iran is in a time warp. The time warp that Islam drags you into.

It's astonishing that people today want to go back to that era. Or that they're so blind that they can't see that that is where they will inevitably end up, if they insist on adhering to Islam and never reforming or changing it. Islam does an amazing job of either brainwashing, or brain cell elimination, not sure which.

Border Collie: "Temporary "marriages"... how vile. Who came up with that idea?"
It's Islamic doctrine, so I'd say Allah. It's acceptable at least in Shia Islam, if I remember correctly, and Iran is Shi'ite (no pun intended).

On the topic: Why should the Iranians feel guilty? After all, they're following their religion perfectly, and probably sleep quite well at night. That's the horrible thing about Islam.

just a little thought,how many people have been murdered by Islam while Ihave been writing this comment

Temporary marriage? This is how Islamics go around all self-righteous and pious, denouncing the West for its prostitution, while claiming they have none of that. They do but they call it something else, making it sound honorable when it's basically prostitution.

Again, brainwashing, or brain-cell-elimination on display. Along with 1400 years of inbreeding. Scrambles up the brain alright.

Posted by: feralee [TypeKey Profile Page] at December 13, 2004 10:45 PM

Mutah.

It's a Moslem, and, I think, mostly shi'ite concept of temporary marriage, which is a typically stupid and sleazy Islamic concept of brazen lying in the face of the reality of reality.

The Iranian government, as it were, is going to kill the girl regardless of what we do. You might well be dirrernt from me but I can't recall the name of the boy they beat to death a few days back, nor can I recall the name of the young girl they hanges some time ago. In fact, as I sit typing I can't recall the name of the girl the Iranians are going to murder next. I can't declare any affection for those kids. I'm not more upset about them than I am about others. I do care that anyone, especially children, is murdered by the government that should be their servants. There comes a point that whether I know these people or I don't, wrong is wrong. I canb't stop the Iranians from murdering another little girl. A letter won't help.

I do like Shiva's idea of a protest in front of Iranian buildings. A boycott isn't going to make any difference because too few people would notice it. But a demonstration in favor of Human rights in Iran, that might draw some attention to the murder campaigns the Iranian government indulges in. Amnsety International has reams of paqper reports detailing atrocities committed by the Iranians. We could sort through some of the more recent detaails and come up with a hand-out wed could give to passers-by in front of Iranian buildings. We might even co-ordinate our efforts and call it a world-wide demonstration. We could pick a day in Jan. when we could actually do this for a few hours. We could make some effort toward bringing this to the attention of our community members rather than to the attention of Amnesty International and the Iranian government. We could come yup with a one page hand-out that details some recent Iranian govt. atrocities that we could give to people in our communities. Maybe they'd read it and come here to find out more about the nature of Islam. I do bedlieve that boycotting a store isn't going to help Iranian people one bit, but that if millions of people boycott Iran, yes, that would make a difference. The point is getting to those millions of people who would care enough to boycott the nation.

Is anyone willing to draw up a sheet of facts to hand out? Is anyone willing to set a date for us to stand outside and risk the weather and the possibility of ridicule from our Leftist brothers and sisters? I'll go for it. That girl is as good as dead right now, but we might begin to save the rest the Iranians haven't yet gotten to. That, to me, seems like a practical measure. Step over the dead and save the living. I will protest, regardless of the weather and the lefties. Will you? if so, when?
