California: Muslims Hold Forum, With Absences

CAIR plays, but DHS doesn't dance. However, the FBI cuts a mean jig. From the LA Times, with thanks to JS:

Muslim American groups from Southern California held a town hall meeting Monday to discuss with federal officials what they call unfair targeting of Muslim travelers and immigrants in the wake of 9/11.

Nearly 500 people attended the meeting, held at a La Mirada hotel. But not everyone on the coalition's guest list showed up.

A representative of the Council on American-Islamic Relations said that a week ago he invited officials from the Department of Homeland Security, including the local heads of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the Transportation Security Administration.

The officials declined, said Omar Zaki, director of government relations for CAIR's office in Anaheim. The officials said that their local offices handle only enforcement and do not set policy, Zaki said.

Lori Haley, a spokeswoman for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, declined to comment Monday.

The Department of Homeland Security has "completely closed the door on this community," said Zaki at Monday's meeting. "They've taken the position that it isn't important for them to be here. They've avoided every opportunity to talk with us. Their arrogance is not acceptable. This is about accountability."

The FBI, which is part of the U.S. Department of Justice and not Homeland Security, did send a representative. Matt McLaughlin, special projects coordinator for an outreach program to the Muslim community, told the audience that the FBI "wants to be sensitive when it makes sense. Our government isn't perfect — mistakes can occur. We are trying to treat everyone with dignity and respect, but also do the very difficult job of protecting you all."

In an interview before the meeting, McLaughlin said that the FBI and the Muslim community "need to remain in dialogue, whether it's a happy day or a sad day. I think it's important that the FBI be here to listen to the community."

Now we see the results of 'sensitivity training' by CAIR, it reads like a first grade handbook! Are we all having a 'happy day?' Perhaps the Homeland Security was excused from the training...one can only hope..FBI..on record....(do our tax dollars pay for these sessions?)
"The Department of Homeland Security has "completely closed the door on this community,"
(seems as though HS failed the sensitivity training)
"The FBI, which is part of the U.S. Department of Justice and not Homeland Security, did send a representative. (FBI has taken sensitivity training by CAIR)
"Matt McLaughlin, special projects coordinator for an outreach program to the Muslim community, told the audience that the FBI "wants to be sensitive when it makes sense." (there is that word 'sensitive' again!)
"In an interview before the meeting, McLaughlin said that the FBI and the Muslim community "need to remain in dialogue, whether it's (here again is that sensitivity training at work) "a happy day or a sad day."

Considering that the FBI is the one government agency arresting would-be terrorists (but somehow doesn't seem to know how to make charges stick), I'm once again going to give them the benefit of the doubt and commend them for showing up at the hatefest.

What's that old saying? Keep your friends close, your enemies closer...

3812Michelle

"(but somehow doesn't seem to know how to make charges stick),.."

They certainly know how to mimic Hollywood "Sting" operations against people certainly not terrorists.

Regarding the statement: "They've taken the position that it isn't important for them to be here. They've avoided every opportunity to talk with us. Their arrogance is not acceptable. This is about accountability."

Doesn't this clash with the stories we read of the FBI and Homeland Security attempting to speak with the muslim community only to be rebuffed and laughed at or to have wild accusations of profiling hurled at them? Go figure.

When the government chooses to legitimize a front organization, such as CAIR, the organization begins to think - justifiably? - that it has some sort of official status.

Refusing to legitimize "a front organization" is a good point. The use of the term arrogance against non-Muslims make me want to gag. They are the arrogant, showing disdain and disrespect for the host community where they reside, DEMANDING that the hosts conform to them, a situation that is reciprocated in Muslim countries.

CAIR et al believe that using this terminology will push the correct buttons and get public opinion on their side to force the government to cave in. Well, I've got new for them: most Americans fed up with this state of affairs and will petition the government by the millions to turn the tables on them!

So CAIR organizes a whinge-fest for Muslims' perceived grievances and they expect all manner of govt agencies to drop everything and attend.

"Unfair targetting of Muslims" after 9/11. Yeah, tell that to the thousands of very non-Muslim looking grannies and grandpas who've been given a special going-over at airports over the past few years. Some so elderly and feeble they couldn't hurt a fly, let alone committ mass murder. Do we hear of senior citizen groups organizing such whinge-fests, even though they are definitely unfairly targetted?

I like the quote from the Fed. Sounds fair to me. What govts are trying to do, is protect everyone. Including Muslims. If Muslims feel this is unfair, they should leave the US.

"They've taken the position that it isn't important for them to be here. They've avoided every opportunity to talk with us. Their arrogance is not acceptable.

Oh they are hurt by this "insensitive" approach of HS. CAIR should be patient. I'm sure the dept of HS will be paying some of them a visit.

The whole thing makes me want to gag! Enough of them already, if they don't like our unsensitivity, and arrogance, let em go back to the Middle East. Oh, yeah, I forgot, their goal is to make the whole world a Muslim state!
