Azerbaijan: Birth certificates denied to children with Christian names

"AZERBAIJAN: Will Christian children now get birth certificates?" From Forum 18, with thanks to Ali Dashti:

Having repeatedly refused to register 18-month old Luka Eyvazov's birth, because his parents gave him a Christian name, the authorities have at last given him a birth certificate, after Forum 18 News Service reported his case. Unusually, the authorities also apologised to Luka's parents "for making us wait and suffer for so long," Luka's mother Gurayat Eyvazov told Forum 18. Without a birth certificate, Luka was not able to go to kindergarten or to school, get treatment in a hospital, or travel abroad. Luka's case was the last known case of a series of Baptist parents in the mainly-Muslim town who were refused birth certificates for their children because they had chosen Christian, not Muslim first names. However, Mrs Eyvazov said it was unclear if the next time Baptist parents try to register a child's birth with a Christian name they will face similar refusals. "Officials said nothing on this." At the age of nearly 18 months, Luka Eyvazov has finally received his birth certificate just weeks after Forum 18 News Service reported the authorities' repeated refusals to issue a birth certificate because they did not wish to register him with a Christian name. Luka's parents, who are ethnic-Georgian Baptists, live in the small town of Aliabad in the north-western region of Zakatala [Zaqatala] close to the border with Georgia. "The town administration phoned my husband on 17 December to say the birth certificate would be there and he collected it on 20 December," Luka's mother Gurayat Eyvazov told Forum 18 from Aliabad on 10 January. "They said they had no permission earlier to issue the birth certificate and even apologised to us for making us wait and suffer for so long."

Luka Eyvazov is the fourth child of Novruz Eyvazov, the leader of one of three Baptist congregations in Aliabad.

Now that the parents are forewarned, they can pick a name of a prophet from the Koran for their next child:

Jesus.

My brother in law converted to Christianity more than 15 years ago. In Indonesia, where he lives, everybody is required to have a national ID, which states one's gender, and most importantly one's religion.

Since he became a Christian, he's been trying to change the religion section on his ID numerous times. On acation after application, during renewal time, he stated that his religion was Christian, yet it always came back as "Islam".

So, until now, his religion as per his ID is still Islam, which means that when they die, they will have to be buried in seperate cemetaries - my brother in law in a Moslem cemetery, my sister in a Christian cemetery.

This is what happened to another relative of mine.

She married a prominent Muslim man after he divorced his first wife who is muslim. After a marriage of 30 some years, he died. In the meantime he had converted to Christianity. It is common practice in Indonesia to have visitation at home where the body is laid out instead of in a funeral home. The first wife's extended family, took the body and buried him in a Moslem cemetery. There was nothing she could do.

Following is an illustration as to how Indonesian muslims have become more Islamists these past years.

A friend of mine came from muslim parents who were very modern in outlook, send the kids including girls to college and even took it in stride when the kids became Christians. When her mother died the moderating influence on her father died with her also. He remarried a staunch muslim woman. He is now living according to the 'real' Islam, ie. he is willing his daughters only half what he's giving to his sons.

Luckily she lives in an infidel country :-), and she and her husband have been doing very well themselves.

That is life for an infidel in a 'secular' muslim country.

There are lots of stories like that in the 'moderate' and 'secular' Indonesia, but the non Muslims have to just bear it and pray. I'm afraid it's going to get worse, since some elements in the government are behind the really radical groups in Indonesia.

Jasmine: Thanks for the information, it's always an education to read about someone's personal experiences in situations like this. Good luck to you, your family and friends.

Pressure in every facet of life to be a muslim. No freedom in any part of life.

Jasmine
If your brother in law wants to change his
KTP {ID card} and you are living outside Jakarta, then the best thing to do is to go directly to the person taking care of the ID cards at the Kecemantan, and 250,000 rupiah, for coffee money should do the trick
I was able to change my wifes ID from Islam to Buddha
Good luck and take care

I think the break up of the former Soviet Union tells us much about Islamic civilization.

The Christian countries, such as Latvia, Estonia, Lithuania, Ukraine etc. are (by and large) democratic, peaceful and are making great efforts to improve themselves. Belarus is still a mess, although I did a few weeks work in Minsk (Belarus) back in 1993, and from what I saw the common people there seem quite capable of turning the situation around, eventually.

On the other hand, the Muslim countries like Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan, etc. are all quite brutal dictatorships and are going nowhere. (I'm also reminded of Cyprus, when it split, the Christian part flourished and the Muslim part slipped into terminal decline.) What is most interesting is that the Christian and Islamic Soviet Republics all had an identical background, viz: the USSR, so when they gained independence, all had similar political and economic institutions to start with.

There is something very corrupting within Islam.
