On Sunday, February 27 at 7:30 amEurabia: The Euro-Arab Axis
Bat Ye'orDescription: Bat Ye'or talks about her new book, "Eurabia," at the Hudson Institute in Washington, DC. She looks at the relationship between European and Arab countries since the mid-20th century and argues that Muslims living in Western Europe have significantly influenced their governments' attitudes toward Israel and other countries in the Middle East. During the talk, she also discusses why Turkey should not be allowed into the European Union and addresses the question of European anti-Semitism. Bat Ye'or answers questions from the audience following her remarks.

The questions asked were alot better this time than when she appeared on that Bible bouncer radio station and all the questions had to do with the Bible in some way in that radio interview. The interview started 7:30 and ended 9:07 EST, but it seemed longer, she has a thick French accent. It is probably quicker to read it, when it appears on Google Video Search which lets you read transcripts of Television programming.
One Jewish questioner asked what she thought about the American president saying Islam is a religion of peace. Her answer: "America is a big country, it cannot break all relations with the Arab countries, it cannot offend one billion muslims, it is very wise."(obviously I am paraphrasing using the notes I took) The thing is earlier in her speech she was criticizing Europe for deflecting the true causes of terrorism and instead blaming Israel and the United States for terrorism. When the US president deflects the true causes of terrorism it is uniquely good, and when Europeans do it, it is evidence of Eurabia and dhimmitude at work. Another phrase she could not help but use was "Europe is finished", on the contrary she made numerous rosy references to reforming Islam that there were good muslims who assimilate in Europe and make a more positive force in Islam.

I have very mixed feelings. Ms Ye'or is obviously brilliant and has a vital message, but her speech is painfully difficult to understand. That plus the weird name and the controversial nature of her work means she won't get the media exposure she deserves.

Nikephoros_Phokas:
When Bush refers to Islam as a religion of peace, it is as likely as not that he is simply being the politician that he is, not only not wanting to alienate people whose cooperation he sought in bringing Saddam down, but also the product of western, liberal thinking (in the larger, post-enlightenment sense, not current political sense) trying to appeal to the better nature of others. Unfortunately, such appeals tend to be lost on people who forsake common sense and decency for a brutish totalitarian ideology masking as a religious belief.
As imperfect as Bush is, as soft as he has been on the Saudis, he has been far less the appeaser or aider and abettor of Islamofascism than such European nations as, say France, or even of many US presidents before him. So perhaps Bat Ye'or isn't guilty of applying a double-standard here.
