Pakistan: Case Lowers Marriageable Age for Girls

From AFP via Sify News, "Pak court validates marriage of 12-year-old girl," with thanks to Nicolei.

Lahore: A Pakistani court in the first verdict of its kind has declared valid the marriage of a 12-year-old girl, a lawyer and court officials said on Friday. A judge sitting at the High Court in the eastern city of Lahore gave the ruling on the grounds that in Islam a female can marry if she has reached puberty, the officials told AFP.

He accepted a joint petition by the girl, named as Zeenat Bibi, and her 25-year-old husband Babar Javed and dismissed charges of rape which were filed by her father.

"This is the first time that a court has validated marriage of a 12-year-old girl in Pakistan," her lawyer Azeem Sarwar said. The decision was handed down on Wednesday.

The ruling also overrides the Muslim Family Law under which the marriageable age for girls in Pakistan is 16 years, he added...

The girl, now aged 12 years and seven months, was medically examined and it was "proved" that she had reached puberty, the lawyer said...

Pakistan's government has sought to change the country's image and recently stepped into a high-profile gang rape case, ordering the rearrest of five men who had been cleared of attacking a woman.

The victim in that case, Mukhtiar Mai, herself became a noted rights campaigner while the acquittals earlier this year sparked international outrage.

Pakistan also ordered an inquiry last month into the case of a college girl who publicly threatened to burn herself to death after she was allegedly gang-raped by kidnappers and then by the police officers who rescued her.

According to Islam, Mohammed was the most perfect person ever, so if he did something it can't be wrong.

Mohammed married Aisha when she was six and consumated the marriage when she was nine.

This is why lowering the law to such an early age in an Islamic country shouldn't surprise us.

No surprise. Young girls, not knowing any better, are easily manipulated into marriage by family, or in this case, by a suitor. Older girls and women are more likely to rebel and refuse. Could this also be the reason why this ancient practice maintained in so many places in today's world?

I wonder how the non muslim peaceniks will justify this bit of wonder from the time capsule of Islam. Pakistan, the modern day wonder, and America's favored nation (outside NATO), is legally allowing 12 yr old marriages.

I need guns. And lots of bullets. Their going to be coming for all of us, and soon, so start stocking up now!

I will always believe, that if the women of islam were given a free choice to either stay in islam or run like hell... 99.2% would take the run like hell option, (especially if they knew they'd be safe and have protection from the predator males of islam). Which would leave the poor predator muslim males stuck beating puppies and kittens, and of course themselves hehehe.

"Gee, Achmed... since all the women left... there's nobody to rape, and nobody to beat. Oh well, we can still beat ourselves and blow up the kafirs".

What's the big deal - she's practically an old woman compared to Aisha.

If you just sit back and think about islam...I don't see how anybody with half a brain could believe that G-d would want this stuff, you use your brain and it is obvious some dirty old man wrote his desires and fetishes down and called it good. That one billion people have fallen for this pirate's treasure story is pathetic.

And the civilized nations looked in disbelief.

I think you guys should check this out first.

http://www.ageofconsent.com/ageofconsent.htm

It lists the age of consent for sex at countries around the world. Its even got the age of consent for homosexual sex, male-male and female-female, if it is allowed or defined in law.

Lol, check out Madegascar. I kind of think 21 is too old.

Hey guys,
How come the Netherlands can have 12 as the age of consent and escape criticism but if Pakistan allows marriage at the same age based on a physical assessment of puberty (which is probably for intimacy within marriage), it's wrong? How about more even-handedness? Or is the Netherlands' approach OK because they are European secular (largely) non-Muslim democratics? Personally, I believe 12 is much too young for sexual experimentation, regardless of religion, race, etc... How about letting kids be kids?

I don't know about what's going on in The Netherlands, but surely they're not allowing 12 year olds to have sex with adult men?

IF they do, I oppose it too.
