An interesting update on the claims the Australian Mufti is making concerning Wood's captors and his release. From the New Zealand Herald:
CANBERRA - Douglas Wood, the 63-year-old Australian engineer rescued last week from kidnappers in Iraq, flew into Melbourne yesterday to a joyful reunion with his family but with questions still surrounding his release...The spiritual leader of Australia's Muslims, Sheik Taj Aldin Alhilali also flew to Iraq to help find and free Wood, at one stage igniting controversy by claiming to have evidence that the still-hidden engineer was alive and well.
Alhilali returned to Sydney yesterday, claiming that Wood's captors had originally sought a A$25 million ransom, but that they had subsequently agreed to release him at 6pm last Wednesday, the day troops found him bound and concealed beneath a blanket in a Baghdad house.
He told the ABC Lateline programme that the group holding him when Iraqi troops burst in had been using the house as a transit station for his release, and had been unarmed because they wanted to deliver Wood safe and well.
"They didn't know who these forces were because they had agreed to deliver him to me, so they had good reason to be frightened for Douglas' life from any forces who attacked this house, of course," he said.
It still remains uncertain how Wood was discovered, with conflicting reports that the raid was either the result of a tip-off or a chance discovery during sweeps by the Iraqi Army and US troops.
Yesterday Prime Minister John Howard said Australian officials in Iraq had confirmed that the discovery was the result of a "sweep and cordon" operation, during which troops had been told that specific houses should be searched...

Scumbag Hilali had NOTHING to do with Woods 'release'- Wood was found during a raid and that has now been confirmed left and right.
I am only interested to know who paid for Hilali's wild goose chase to Iraq. Apart from Downers stupid remark 'Halali is an asset of our multi-culti society'- hardly anyone in the Australian government lined up for his support.
Some rumor-producing jerks from the lefty -loony press tried in vain to give Hilali credit but the Aussies are too cynical to buy any of it.
Sooner or later Hilali will give himself away. We know that he is a hatemonger, hatepreacher and a Jihadi. We need to get this MF out...

The bloody idiot was in Iraq for six weeks and he stated that he only required 12 hours more to secure Doug's release.
Those bad Iraqi and US forces ruining the mullahs moment of glory.

Wood was asked what part Sheik Hilaly had done to secure his release, and he said that he had never heard of him.

The mufti is 'seriously concerned' about two men who are long dead and buried. Obviously the familes he spoke to didn't see fit to tell him that their men were dead - or could it be that the mufti is simply telling lies?
This is a masterpiece in Muslim illogic. Trad appears to be seriously put out because Wood called his captors 'arseholes'. Obviously he was meant to toe the PC idiot line and praise them for their fair treatment.
Report from Sydney Daily Telegraph

Mufti mixup over murdered hostages
By Ian McPhedran
The Australian mufti claims that Iraqi forces risked the lives of two hostages during the rescue of Douglas Wood last month has been questioned - because the pair were murdered last month.
The men, Faris Shakir and Adel Najm, who were snatched with Mr Wood in April, were shot after being tortured. Their bodies were dumped in a rubbish tip in mid may. Their corpses were held by police and their families identified them on June 17. They were immediately buried.
Despite this, Sheik Tak el-Dene Elhilaly yesterday continued to insist that he was still seriously worried about the two men.
"He's quite concerned for those other two people, people who were friends of Douglas Wood, people who had worked with Douglas Wood, people who used to invite him into their homes" his spokesman Keysar Trad said.
"The mufti has dealt with the children of one of these people and he's concerned for these children that they might become orphans."
It is not clear why the families had not told the mufti of the mens's fate several days after they had identified and buried their bodies.
Defence Minister Robert Hill described the mufti's claims as illogical.
"The lives of any kidnapped persons are in danger and most of them don't escape with their lives" Senator Hill said.
" I couldnt understand the logic of his argument. He seemed to be saying Mr Wood shouldnt have been rescued, should have waited until a time might have occurred when all three had been produced "
He also said Mr Wood should be allowed to profit from his 47-day kidnap ordeals through book and media deals.
Mr Trad said that Wood would be in mortal danger if he retured to Iraq because he had called his captors 'arseholes'.
"I would be very concerned for his safety, especially after the comments he made yesterday with the negative references he's made to the people who were holding him hostage," Mr Trad said last night............."

Hilali's lies are being exposed all the time. Yet much of the mainstream media continues to fawn all over him, probably hoping he'll miraculously end up being the hero eventually. Afterall, bad Dougie Wood committed a horrible sin: he didn't praise & thank the "brave & noble freedom fighters" nor did he criticize & blame Howard and our involvement in Iraq. Wood didn't turn out to be an Aussie/American Sgrena, to the media's disappointment. Instead he called his captors what they were and praised the coalition's efforts in Iraq. To the msm (mostly lefties) this is a mortal sin. So they're busy denigrating Wood while continuing to give that Hilali airtime.
The media will scrutinize the government's statements and actions with fanatical obsession, yet they seem to ignore lie after lie coming out of Hilali's mouth. Gee, one would think the media is biased, even untruthful. It sickens me that they grovel at that liar's feet. I look forward to his Sunday Channel 10 interview. I can hear the howls of outrage from the media already.

It's good to see that other countries besides the US have meddling Jesse Jackson types sticking their pompous noses where they're not wanted.

Having read a few pieces about Wood's release, this "cleric" appears to be a right @rsehole and I doubt he is fooling many Aussies. Check this link out;
http://abc.net.au/news/newsitems/200506/s1395669.htm
Here is the crux of it though
Meanwhile, Sheikh Taj El-din Al Hilaly has arrived back in Sydney after his mercy mission to try to assist the release Mr Wood in Bagdad.
The Sheikh flew from Cairo where he was seeking medical treatment.
He said through an interpreter how close Mr Wood came to being killed before he arrived in Baghdad.
"The Sheikh says before he left Sydney there was a 20 per cent chance of Douglas Wood being freed," he said.
"Upon arriving in Iraq there was a 70 per cent chance Douglas Wood would be freed and in the third day of the Sheikh's presence in Iraq the Sheikh was able to secure a 100 per cent guarantee that Douglas Wood would be freed."
The Sheikh says the Wood family should campaign for the release of of other hostages.
In other developments:
The Australian muslim cleric who returned home today says Douglas Wood would have been released even if the raids had not been successful
If the "sheikh" said any of the above, dear oh dear, what an @rsehole !!

I saw this post this morning but decided to leave it until now to comment.
Since the media are too PC to say it I shall,Elhilaly you are a lying pig and you shouldn't even be here in Australia(typical Labor Government).
Hey Terminator,I was reading the Opinions page in The Daily Telegraph a couple of days ago and some loser said that Hilaly should get an Order of Australia for his part in this fiasco.I couldn't help but laugh my head off at such a ridiculous idea.Strange how the media don't even check thier own archives isn't it?
We all know its a crock, just the muslims trying to worm thier way into Aussies hearts.Well it didn't work for me so the 'Shake' should just go away somewhere.
What a bunch of no good no hoper wankers muslims are,I just get so tired of them.

I've read a couple of letters nominating the mufti for the Order of Australia also - its downright scary.
The thing that makes me curious is why the mufti thinks his lies won't be exposed. Apparently the head of the Australian hostage response team read him the riot act for revealing the existence of a video showing Wood alive.
First, he lied by saying that he had spoken to Wood on the phone, then, when that was proven to be a lie, he backtracked and said he had seen the video - thereby endangering Wood's life without a second thought.
Then he said he had seen the families of the other hostages and was very concerned about them - but the other two hostages had been executed a month ago.
How could anyone with half a brain believe anything that comes out of this man's mouth? Yet he is obviously used to being taken at his word, and never being questioned.
That's scary.

Order of Australia?!?!?!! My God, are people that stupid? I just cannot comprehend this blind adoration for that fraud. He has lied. Over and over and over. It is obvious he was only trying to ingratiate himself with Australians, in light of Islam's bad PR here in Australia lately. Even Blind Freddy can see that. Yet he continues to get the media fawning over him, while Wood gets snide sneers and criticisms. I find this self-loathing that afflicts many people bizarre and disgusting.
If common-sense prevails, and they don't tarnish the Order of Oz by giving it to that liar, he could probably be assured of getting the Sydney University Peace Foundation prize. Afterall, they gave it to Hanan Ashrawi, the Palestinian propagandist. Those type of prizes seem to have the type of people behind them who'd think Hilali is a fantastic person, instead of the con-man he is. Like the Nobel Peace Prize, with that Arafat getting it. They're not about rewarding those who deserve it, but all about sending a nasty, petulant message.

DT, feralee, DianaC:
Did you watch George Negus tonight? Hilali and his bearded assistant made calls to Iraq to confirm the lies that couldn't be confirmed:
Turned out the 2 other hostages 'together' with Woods already dead more than a month ago! Negus kept his poker-nose right to the grindstone to the ridiculous end, after all he is a true Muzzie-friend...
They are so f*#@ing primitive it is not even funny!

I read in the local Taiwanese English Press that Wood apologized to the coalition governments for making statements under duress and spoke well of the Iraqi soldiers who found him.
As for the intelligence, I strongly suspect that there are lots of Iraqi Muslims and others who have declared their own "jihad"--but against the goons and thugs rather than the coalition, and hence reported suspicious-looking actrivities.

Terminator, no I didn't catch Negus' interview with the perpetually lying Sheikh. I reckoned that even a rerun of CSI: Miami would be far more enjoyable than watching Hilali continue his fabrications and Negus continue to kiss bum.
I did read the transcript, however. Nothing surprising there. Same rubbish, and typically, Negus not doing a proper journo's job. Instead of going for the Sheikh's throat, he backed off. Pointing out the obvious discrepancies but always allowing Hilali to worm his way out. Yet put an Israeli checkpoint soldier in front of a journo and they'll lash into him/her with a fury that's shocking. (A la Richard Carlton in a 60 Minutes interview I saw a few months ago, where his hatred for Israel was so blatant it was embarrassing.)
I like how at the end of the interview, Hilali, still grasping for legitimacy, allegedly phones Iraq, to have Negus talk to Hilali's supposed "go-between", to "prove" Hilali's story. LOL! Priceless. This "go-between" even insisted there was no rescue. That Wood was released, thanks to the mufti. Hilali has no shame, no conscience. He just keeps lying. And Negus just goes along with it. It's amazing how the media, most of them loony lefties, tiptoe delicately around the obvious lies of Hilali, and yet vent their spleen on Wood. It's an eye-opener. Dismaying that our media is biased & so full of loathing. And not just the media. There was a letter to the Age where some nong suggested Wood should give his interview fee to Hilali!!! There are people out there who are just as full of loathing for Australia. Frightening.

Let us all remember that every cloud has a silver lining !
Maybe it is my age (little change out of 66 yrs), maybe it is because I am a Christian but more likely it is because I am a typical laid back dinky-di Aussie as I personally am very pleased to have the spiritual leader of Australia's Muslims represented by Sheik Taj Aldin Alhilali.
The reasoning is simple - with leaders like that, it allows our intelligence and counter terrorism organisations to stay well within budget !!
You can count me in as one of the very large numbers of Aussies not fooled by the claim of "peaceful religion".
BTW - I am curious as to where the finances came for his "rescue" trip to Iraq - does anyone know the answer to that ?
DOG !!

Hi feralee:
Could you post the link for the transcript?
Or the transcript itself? I couldn't find it on the Negus website... thanks!

Terminator, it is on the SBS site. Here ...

Seems strange for a bigshot religious leader in an English-speaking country to not speak English after all these years here. I wonder if he always uses a translator (Trad) so that if he's taken to task for what he says he can claim Trad mistranslated him?
Lazydog: I know that I've read, in a couple of places, that his overseas jaunt was paid for by the Australian Islamic Council (or whatever their name is). I don't believe it was the government. I sure hope not.

Throw another shrimp on the barbie!
(And Wood can call anybody he likes an arsehole, because I doubt he'll be rushing back to Iraq any time left in this lifetime.)
Bloody fine news for a change!
Good work all in-country!
