Man sentenced to have eyes gouged out in Iran

Sharia alert from Amnesty International via Iranian.ws, with thanks to Anthony:

Amnesty International is calling for a sentence of eye gouging against a man in Iran not to be carried out. The 28-year-old man, known only as Vahid, has been sentenced to have his eyes surgically gouged out for a crime committed when he was 16 years old.

The Iranian Supreme Court rejected an appeal earlier this month and ordered that the punishment should be carried out.

It may now be inflicted at any time and Amnesty International has issued an 'Urgent Action' appeal against the sentence and is urging the authorities to abolish punishments such as eye-gouging which constitute cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment, amounting to torture.

Amnesty International UK Media Director Mike Blakemore said:

"This is a truly shocking case amounting to a sentence of judicial torture.

"We appeal to the Iranian authorities to guarantee that this punishment is not carried out and would further appeal to all medical practitioners in Iran to have nothing to do with this gruesome punishment."

According to Iranian press reports, Vahid was convicted of deliberately pouring acid from a battery on the face of another youth, Gholam-Hossein, blinding him. This took place in 1993, when Vahid had been working as a labourer in the capital, Tehran.

Vahid reportedly maintained throughout his trial that the attack was not intentional and that he had only meant to threaten the youth with the battery during an argument, but the battery's lid had opened accidentally, causing the injury.

The trial court reportedly ordered that Vahid's eyes be sprayed with acid as retribution (qesas) for his actions. Vahid's lawyer appealed, arguing that the rest of his face would also be damaged from the acid.

The appeal was reportedly rejected by a second court which ruled instead that Vahid's eyes would be surgically gouged out in order not to damage his face.

This punishment is in accord with the Qur'an: "We ordained therein for them: 'Life for life, eye for eye, nose or nose, ear for ear, tooth for tooth, and wounds equal for equal'" (5:45). However, even this verse continues: "But if any one remits the retaliation by way of charity, it is an act of atonement for himself."

Eh?

So what does this make Iran?

After all, if Gitmo, that prison for Jihadi psychopaths is the gulag of our time, what hyperbole fits into this ghouish and wicked crime?

I am of mixed thoughts about this one. In a culture where throwing acid is endemic, the punishment DOES fit the crime.

However, a less barbaric punishment would be for him to provide his victim wth life long care and support.

but...but...but....in Gitmo, the abuse, the horror, the Aguilera music!!

why is AI wasting time worrying about intentional blinding when they should be rescuing
the poor, victimized, misunderstood detainees.

kind of puts things in perspective

WHere's Amnesia Iternational just when we need them?

Loudly protesting Sudan, N Korea, China and Iran, am sure? (Do I need mention Saudi and Nigeria and other pretty-places??)

Why Irene Khan could do well looking at her home country B'desh's treatment of Ahmediyas and Hindus and Buddhists?!?!

Maybe we sould have hope and faith in the UN possibly, eh? The same UN whose Human rights commission hosts worthies such as Sudan, Pakistan and China as board members; whose officials engaged in pedophilia in Africa....Yuck.

I thought that eye goughing was something that was reserved for people in Hell.

Maybe this would be a great opportunity for the Iranian government to promote itself internationaly? It could set up giant billboards depicting a close up of the man's face with his eyes goughed out, blood gushing out of his sockets and his eyes lying on a platter.
"Come to Iran where Hell lasts 24 hours a day. Can you see?"

"the abuse, the horror, the Aguilera music!"

Very funny.

At this website, given what we all realize, we all need cheering up.

Lest everyone forget, Iranian TV also produced and broadcast a TV program, Zara's Blue Eyes, which alleged that Israeli doctors were removing the eyes from Palestinian children for transplantation into Jewish patients.

What a fetidly sick society.

Jay-

You got it right!

Are the Iranians so short-sighted (sic)?

They should simply sentence the criminal to act as the live "seeing-eye dog" for his victim (since dogs are such 'unclean' animals in their sight, that would be an ongoing humiliating form of punishment in itself) ---until the day when eye transplantation becomes a reality.

And then give the acid-attack sufferer one of the guy's eyes. (Leaving them each able to see...)

Literally "an eye for an eye".

That way they could both understand more of their culture's brutal structure, and the Koran's possiblility for wiser re-interpretation beyond this 7th century literalistic sickness.

Don't the Iranian ayatollahs and their lackeys believe that medicine will ever advance to such a humane point?

Or are they just cruel dogmatists bent on vicious payback for a deranged crime (common in that region, but usually for women)?

BTW- There are images posted online of this "eye gouging" 'surgery'... and they don't just stab a stick in the victim's eyes, but do it as if it were some kind of 'real' medical procedure. Strapped to an 'operating' table, head secured, sheet over the body, sterilized instruments, ad absurdum. (Although the only Doctor I know of who would be a model for performing this kind of mutilating madness was named Mengele.)

If Gitmo is "a gulag for our time", then Iran is literally "Hell on Earth".

And the devils just won the election.

So then we have the right to pick the 2 tallest buildings is Saudi Arabia and take planes full of Saudi citizens and fly into them?

Muslims like corrosive acids and things that go BOOM!

Posted by: Aiken Bryce [TypeKey Profile Page] at June 28, 2005 12:32 PM

Certainly this a cautionary tale for us in the West. Let the world see the true face of Islam. Our news media should do specials on a regular basis that depict actual events, whether historical, or contemporary news, which is really the "first draft of history."

Let the world see the true face of Islam. These broadcasts should show what would happen to individuals in the West IF Islam and Sharia would come to the West,in any form,>/b> either in "voluntary" Sharia family courts, in partitioned parts of the country such as Muslim only cities or neighborhoods, or if Islam and Sharia became the law of the and either through war, derception, Da'wa, take over through purchase, traded for oil, jihad, demographics, or through any other means.

We should not shirk from showing the true nature of Islam. Let the world see the true face of Islam. Not what is told in the flowery texts, but through the evidence of our "lying eyes." News reporters should be present at every flogging, stoning, beheading, gang rape, acid-in-face punishment, and so on. Seeing is believing.

So the Iranians are the ones who are 'stealing the eyes' of their children. Recently they accused the Jooooos to be guilty of that.

But anyway, I'm surprised that Amnesia Intentional still gets involved in such cases. It's Islamic 'law' or is it not?

Irene Khan should be very much in favor of that! It's her job to try to make it palatable to us filthy kufrs that'divine Islamic law' from Allah must not be doubted.

Or is she also an apostate now? An infidel?

I don`t have any problem with this.
The punishment sims to fit the crime and as long as they are applying the sharia barbaric law to their own,i won`t lose any sleep over it.
Go ahead Itan, cripple your own, kill as many as possible, amputate their limbs, stone them to death, but keep it right there and leave us alone.

I concur with the previous post---I don't have any problem with this. The punishment fits the crime. The victim, who is now blind and whose face is disfigured, is screwed for life. It is more efficient to have the perpetrator support financially the victim for the rest of his life, but the then the deterrence effect is minimal, whereas gouging his eyes will gain a lot of publicity and make idiots like that think twice before doing such stupid things.
