Christianity Dying in Its Birthplace

Daniel Pipes writes in the New York Sun (via his website) about the persecution of Christians in Taybeh:

What some observers are calling a pogrom took place near Ramallah, West Bank, on the night of September 3-4. That's when 15 Muslim youths from one village, Dair Jarir, rampaged against Taybeh, a neighboring all-Christian village of 1,500 people.

The reason for the assault? A Muslim woman from Dair Jarir, Hiyam Ajaj, 23, fell in love with her Christian boss, Mehdi Khouriyye, owner of a tailor shop in Taybeh. The couple maintained a clandestine two-year affair and she became pregnant in about March 2005. When her family members learned of her condition, they murdered her. That was on about September 1; unsatisfied even with this "honor killing" – for Islamic law strictly forbids non-Muslim males to have sexual relations with Muslim females – the Ajaj men sought vengeance against Khouriyye and his family.

They took it two days later in an assault on Taybeh. The Ajajs and their friends broke into houses and stole furniture, jewelry, and electrical appliances. They threw Molotov cocktails at some buildings and poured kerosene on others, then torched them. The damage included at least 16 houses, some stores, a farm, and a gas station. The assailants vandalized cars, looted extensively, and destroyed a statue of the Virgin Mary.

"It was like a war," one Taybeh resident told the Jerusalem Post. Hours passed before the Palestinian Authority security and fire services arrived. The 15 assailants spent only a few hours in police detention, then were released. As for Khouriyye, the Palestinian Arab police arrested him, kept him in jail, and (his family says) have repeatedly beat him.

As the news service Adnkronos International notes, for Palestinian Christians "the fact that the Muslim aggressors have been released while the Christian tailor-shop owner is still being held, at best symbolizes the PA's indifference to the plight of Palestinian Christians, at worst shows it is taking sides against them."

Read it all. Good links in the original.

The hymn Jerusalem has become the anthem song of the English Cricket team who have just defeated the Australians in a test series for the first time in many years.

Next stop for the team is Pakistan in November.... will England supporters singing a Christian Hymn be guilty of any crime in that Islamic country?

Jerusalem
(From 'The Preface' to 'Milton') (Notes:)
And did those feet in ancient time
Walk upon England's mountains green?
And was the holy Lamb of God
On England's pleasant pastures seen?

And did the Countenance Divine
Shine forth upon our clouded hills?
And was Jerusalem builded here
Among these dark satanic mills?

Bring me my bow of burning gold;
Bring me my arrows of desire;
Bring me my spear; O clouds, unfold!

Bring me my chariot of fire!

I will not cease from mental fight,
Nor shall my sword sleep in my hand,
Till we have built Jerusalem
In England's green and pleasant land.

Imagine if the US and Allied legions in Iraq had a different mission: to carve a Christian state out of Lebanon; to fortify it, to defend it in its infancy, and to assist with the relocation of the remnants of Levantine Christianity to a haven on the Mediterranean. Call it the "West Timor Project."

This will have no effect on those whose attempt to disguise their antisemitism as purely righteous indignation at "occupation" (a word which requires paying no attention either to the terms of the League of Nations' Mandate for Palestine, or to all the rules which have governed territorial adjustments after successful wars of defense against aggression -- vide World War I, vide World War II), and who have managed to infiltrate into the bureaucracies that claim to speak for Christians -- i.e., the World Council of Churches, the Presbyterians and Episcopalians in the United States, and of course the Anglican Church, which needs to be told, like Master Ridley, to play the man.

But, but, islam is a religion of peace......isn't it ? It makes Hooper's mob (CAIR) look pretty silly in the grand scheme of things.

To Londonistan Calling

England supporters singing a Christian Hymn in the Land of the Pure will almost certainly be beaten and, as you suggest, will likely be considered to have committed a criminal offence.

I fervently hope that neither of these things comes to pass.

Seeing you blokes kick some Pakistani arse on their home turf would go a long way to easing my pain (yep, I'm an Australian!).

In any event, I can't see the Barmy Army being indhimmidated.

I read the complete article. Well worth the read. I have two small gripes: First, Pipes mentions two women who were murdered for being "prostitutes," but goes on to state they were, in fact, virgins. While this detail is interesting, it behooves us as Westerners, non-Muslims, and non-nutcases to remember that their murders would be no less horrendous and repugnant if they, in fact, had screwed all the willing men in their neighborhood. Second, a lot of so-called Christian men in the Middle East also treat their women in barbaric fashion and sometimes engage in honor killings. I say so-called Christian because their faith is obviously contaminated by the world around them.
