Let's see. Is this a case of extreme Sharia or smiley-face Sharia? Hmmm. From Reuters, with thanks to Sr. Soph:
KABUL — Afghan authorities have detained the editor of a women’s rights magazine on the orders of a presidential adviser who deemed one of his articles blasphemous to Islam, a senior government official said yesterday.Mohaqiq Nasab, editor-in-chief of Hoqooq Zan, or Women’s Rights, was detained on last Thursday on instructions from a religious adviser to Western-backed President Hamid Karzai, the official said....
In his article, the 50-year-old Nasab questioned the need for harsh Islamic punishment for apostates, thieves and others, Sangcharaki said.

Goodbye Mohaqiq, we hardly knew ye.
And neither did allah, for he knows not.

It is obvious that Mohaqiq is in for some good old fashioned "harsh Islamic punishment". probably in the "other" category.
More work for the Stoners.

I have often thought thats exactly what most mohammmedan loons really need - a big bifta, a shag and some vodka shooters, they'd be less inclined toward the old C4.
Oh, not that kind of stoner...my mishtake...

Oh, she'll get a shag alright. Them there Moslem Men really enjoy a good ol' fashioned RAPE.
Takes you back to 625AD or so, when men were men, and women were... abject subservient cows. My how times have changed.

Read the item again.
"In his article, the 50-year-old Nasab questioned the need for harsh Islamic punishment for apostates, thieves and others"
The pronoun "his" is used twice. It may be a women's rights mag, but the editor is a man.

Yes we need to get really behind the malalai joyas of this world. malalai was standing for election in the recent poll in afghanistan - i dont know whether she got in or not.
she was shouted down in the constitutional loya jirga when she got up and spoke for democracy and women. her mike was switched off to cries of allahu akbar. she refused to apologize for her comments and was called a "rude little girl, and a communist"
she has to go about incognito with bodyguards, as four attempts have been made on her life.
needless to say posters have appeared calling her a prostitute etc
under afghan law there has to be twice the number of women in the lower house of parliament as there are provinces, of which there are 34.
but will the women be listened to, and what will they dare say in the face of these warlords?

Sounds like she insulted Islam -- so according to Islam she is just getting what she deserves... That's "the way" and Allah knows best!

By the way, it may sound harsh of me -- and perhaps I should be championing those who stand up against the fascism of Islam in their own countries -- that's what Pipes, Rushdie, Bush, Irshad Mangy, perhaps Robert Spencer and others would have us all believe we should be cheering for... When those voices have enough force to change the 99% + of Muslims who disagree with them or have always been too cowardly to stand against the vast VAST majority who embrace the fascism of their religion, THE THE PIGS WILL REALLY BE SEEN TO FLY -- It aint' gonna happen, folks --
AND THE SOONER WE COME TO GRIPS WITH THAT INELUCTABLE FACT, the BETTER OFF WE'LL BE FIGHTING THESE EXECRABLE THRALLS OF ISLAM... To vainly hope for more voices to speak against the awful terrorism of Islam only to be slaughtered, raped, and exterminated is FOOLISH, and extremely DANGEROUS... We must begin looking out for OURSELVES -- those unfortunate to be born under the star and crescent are LOST already -- It is far far too late for them -- let's not wait until it's too late for us too!!!

Sounds like she can go and join the Afghan beauty queen who is now in hiding all because she showed to much flesh (she wore a dress, swimwear, you know dared to be a woman).
Thank goodness this new Islam democracy is working! NOT.

jsla:
you are going beyond harsh. the muslim community around the world is not homogenious and if you think it unlikely that the moderate voices are going to get anywhere, how likely is it that over a billion Muslims are going to disappear. And we can't build a separation wall around them to protect ourselves, either.
Islam needs to undergo a pretty radical reform, but to be a meaningful reform, it has to come from within, as a popular movement and not imposed a la Attaturk. But it can only come from within if Muslim reformers are supported and the non-Muslim world, in addition to supporting the reformers, also maintains pressure on the Muslim world to clean up its act and refrains from supporting Islamist regimes in the interest of "stability", etc. Bringing Turkey into the EU without forcing it to meet EU standards on human rights and civil liberties is a key example of the wrong thing to do.

Waterdragon52 -- I don't disagree with your theoretical proposition for 'what the Muslims need to do...' However, in an unqualified manner I'm stating that I SEE NO EVIDENCE WHATSOEVER that Islam is undergoing anything remotely like "radical reform" or that there is a scintilla of evidence that there is intent for "meaningful reform..." in any measure. I don't see it happening ANYWHERE, except in impossibly small enclaves of fantasist Muslims sheltered in the West and cheered on by their desperately hopeful Western advocates... Nothing like it can exist in the Muslim world because of the content of the article above --
In the early 90s cold fusion was held out as a panacea for all the world's energy woes -- remember? For about 3 months the media treated this utter lie like it was something real that held genuine promise for mankind. A mass hysteria abounded, and everywhere you turned the media was discussing cold fusion... but it was a COMPLETELY FALSE fantasy...
Believing in reform in Islam is almost exactly like believing in cold fusion -- a nice fanciful idea that WILL NEVER COME TO PASS...
The big difference lies in the fact that to decieve yourself into believing that cold fusion is possible, little harm can be done.
But casting all your hopes for humanity's future by believing in 'reform in Islam' (no matter how fervent you belief) holds DIRE consequences. I imagine it is the same vain hope that has plagued ALL who have seen Islam bounding towards them over the horizon for 1400 years, only to eventually be forced to 'surrender...' The ascendancy of Islam's dark tide isn't stopping, my friend, and I am the first to admit I don't know what to do about it -- The possible responses are probably all pretty grim -- but to play "let's pretend" and vainly hope for an impossible outcome is nearly insane...
I think your response to my posting (and the responses from the vast majority of Westerners, and poster here too) stem from our collective inability to contend with the grotesque deformations of Muslim thought which we witness gaining momentum -- What to do? I don't know... But I know IN MY BONES that hoping for them to reform is a MISTAKE of gargantuan proportions...

Perhaps I should have said above:
But I know IN MY BONES that hoping for them to reform without rationally discussing other options, even if they are extremely ugly, is a MISTAKE of gargantuan proportions...
