West: Twisting history

The impeccable Diana West takes on the peculiar unreality that prevails at the White House:

So what if Article 2 in the Iraqi constitution states, "no law that contradicts the established provisions of Islam may be established." If people participate in an election for anything -- including sharia, including Hamas -- it's the Spirit of '76 all over again, or so our leaders say. Never mind that worried Iraqi Christians, concerned for religious freedom, say they're likely to ask Pope Benedict XVI to intervene. Meanwhile, according to the Bush Happy Face Doctrine, if any religious book goes onto the White House shelf, including one that's uniquely venomous toward "infidel" non-believers, it's a Hallelujah moment....

After September 11, Mr. Bush declared "Islam is peace." Now, he insists that "extremists" "distort the idea of jihad" into a rationale for terrorism. Maybe Mr. Bush will read his new Koran and discover that the idea of jihad is itself extreme. Better still, maybe Mr. Bush will go so far as to add another book to the White House collection: "The Legacy of Jihad" by Andrew G. Bostom. This extraordinary compendium of primary and secondary source material, much of it translated into English for the first time, elucidates the theory and practice of jihad over 1,400 years. With its chronological span across the centuries, "The Legacy of Jihad" goes a long way toward bridging the void in Western understanding of the institutional role of jihad within Islam.

The White House may have its own Koran now, but the president's reckoning with the legacy of jihad is still overdue.

Read it all.

"no law that contradicts the established provisions of Islam may be established."
-- provisional Iraqui constitution

Now wait just a dagblamed minute!

Just this morning, KingTolerance assured me that Islam is a religion and not a nation, but the above clause sure looks national to me.

Wherever Sharia is adopted (and Sharia is in effect in many Moslems nations) woluldn't that render these countries to be provinces in a loosely coupled nation called Islam?

KT, get in here and explain yourself.

I would like to thank Andrew Bostom for pricing his book so competitively. $18.48 for 759 pages.

I haven't received it yet from Amazon but look forward to reading it and doing a blog report at my site.

Right now I am finishing Muhammadanism by Snouck Hurgronje (1916). It is fascinating reading his observations on society in the late 19th century and early 20th century. All those fruitcakes who defend Islam - They all lived backed then, had a 'rejuvenation' treatment and now go by the names of John Esposito, Karen Armstrong, and David Forte. ha ha

In any case, I will be doing a 'book report' with some extensive passages from Muhammadanism on my blog soon. It's only 180 pages and easy to read.

Everything Snouck Hurgronje wrote is worth reading. If you are near a university library, read his book on the Acinese. He also wrote on Mecca, and was one of the very few non-Muslims to travel there and report on it. He was, for a time, an adviser to the Dutch government in the East Indies. Imagine someone of that formation, and ability, in the highest levels of the American government, explaining the nature and doctrines of Islam to members of the Cabinet, the State Department, the Pentagon, the Congress. But of course all they, or their eager staffs, have to do -- is read. They can read Snouck Hurgronje. They can read Margoliouth. They can read Joseph Schacht and Antoine Fattal. They can read "The Politically Incorrect Guide to Islam and the Crusades." They can read "Islam and Dhimmitude" and "The Decline of Eastern Christianity Under Islam" and "Eurabia." They can read "Whi I Am Not a Muslim" and "Leaving Islam." They can read "The Legacy of Jihad." They don't have to listen to Esposito or members of MESA Nostra. They don't. This isn't elementary particle physics -- one can read, and look at what the day's news presents, or the week's, or the month's, or the decade's. It all holds together. It all makes sense. It all can be explained -- if only Islam is thoroughly understood. Then what was constant confusion clears up.

I don't find the ban on laws that are inconsistent with Islam too worrisome, since it is stated as a negative. There is no requirement that all laws called for by Islam are mandatory. Indeed, there are other negative requirements--such as a ban on any law that violates any of the U.N. human rights accords--that will bar much of the Sharia law from having legal force. For limited government, multiple negative requirements can be propitious. If only the Iraqies can get a Supreme Court that is far less willing to than ours to rewrite fundamental laws at will.

A Quranic concept of terrorism

Jihad is the ‘evil ideology’ that is driving terrorism. Muslims should take the lead in rooting out this barbarism.

In his laudatory foreword to the book, General Zia wrote:

“JIHAD FI-SABILILLAH (Jihad in the path of Allah) is not the exclusive domain of the professional soldier, nor is it restricted to the application of military force alone. The book brings out with simplicity, clarity and precision the Quranic philosophy on the application of the military force, within the context of the totality that is JIHAD.”

Indeed it does. Brigadier Malik writes,

“the Holy Prophet’s operations …are an integral and inseparable part of the divine message revealed to us in the Holy Quran. … The war he planned and carried out was total to the infinite degree. It was waged on all fronts: internal and external, political and diplomatic, spiritual and psychological, economic and military.”

Another point made by the author is that the war should be carried out in the opponent’s territory. “The aggressor was always met and destroyed in his own territory.” The ‘aggressor’ is anyone who stands in the way of Jihad.

Koran is the root cause of terror.

Belloc once observed that "We sit by and watch the Barbarian, we tolerate him; in the long stretches of peace we are not afraid. We are tickled by his irreverence, his comic inversion of our old certitudes and our fixed creeds refreshes us; we laugh. But as we laugh, we are watched by large and awful faces from beyond: and on these faces there is no smile."

You're right, so far as it goes.

Trouble is, only a tiny fraction of the 300 million souls living in this country will read so much as one book on Islam.

The way to bust up this civilization-threatening logjam is mass communications. In other words, advertising.

I outlined a feasible plan in the 2-page short story that called "The Only Way Out of this Nightmare" that I sent to dozens of anti-Dhimmitude commentators, including Robert Spencer. And I think it's a fun read.

But not a peep. Not a single posting on a high traffic website.

You guys need to wise up that this is not a nation of grad students. Where's the marketing plan?
