what do you think? will "muhammad" be lower case too? i doubt it. "No more "Christ" with a capital C in the Netherlands," from catholic news agency, with thanks to epg:
According to a new grammar rule in the Netherlands and Belgium, the name "Christ" will soon be written with a lower-case "c", as stipulated by an orthography reform published last Friday.Posted by Robert at October 22, 2005 07:41 AM | Email this entry | Print this entryAccording to the Kath.net agency, the new spelling rules also will stipulate that the Dutch word for "jews" (joden) be spelled with a capital "J" when referring to nationality and with a lower-case "j" when referring to the religion. The changes will be mandatory starting in August 2006.
Isn't the word for Jewish nationality Israeli?
Will the Muslim religion be in lower case?
Pathetic.

The article is incorrect. 'Christ' will still be spelled with a capital C, as it has always been. The new spelling 'christ' is only to be used for images (sculptures, pictures) of Christ.

Syme - thanks for the link. Looks as if the story was incorrect.
What would e.e. cummings have to say about this?
How are 'grammar rules' enforced? Do grammar police go around arresting hapless greengrocers for advertising apple's and banana's? Six months for a Oxford comma, ten years for a hanging participle?
