Dhimmi ploy to get a reduced sentence?

An Australian model gets busted for drug possession in Indonesia and is now appealing for mercy from the court. From the AFP:

Michelle Leslie told a court on the resort island of Bali that a friend gave her the pills and told her they were medicine for stress that would replace Ritalin, a drug prescribed by her Australian doctor, lawyer Christo Imanuel Dugis said. “A day before she was arrested, she ran out of Ritalin. Her friend gave her a drug which she said had similar effects. She didn’t exactly know what it was until she was arrested,” Dugis said.
“Miss Leslie apologised to the people of Indonesia for violating the law here. She said it wasn’t her intention and she did it out of ignorance. She appealed for mercy,” he said.

The lawyer said he expected Leslie to be sentenced to three months in prison if the court considered her an “occasional user”. This means she could walk free as soon as the verdict is passed because of time already served. In their indictment, prosecutors said Leslie had “unlawfully possessed psychotropical drugs”, an offence carrying a maximum sentence of 15 years.

Denny Thong, a doctor testifying as an expert witness, said that Leslie had sought occasional refuge in stimulant drugs to overcome anxiety and stress due to her career as a model and troubled childhood, lawyer Dugis said. Thong said Leslie as a child was often in conflict with her mother, who is from the Philippines, because of their different cultural backgrounds.

Leslie was arrested during a police raid near a party in Bali’s Jimbaran area in August. She said last month she had converted to Islam a year ago and that her new faith had prevented her from going “crazy” in her police cell Bali. The 24-year-old had modelled lingerie and swimwear before her arrest but she has been wearing an Islamic headscarf in Bali. Leslie is among 12 young Australians facing execution or long prison sentences in Indonesia for drug offences.

Is this some sort of reversed taqiya? Before and after images of Ms. Leslie's transformation can be seen here (scroll down). Whatever may be the case, who can blame her?

I'd tell the Indonesians anything they'd want to here as long as it would keep me out of jail (and from being raped while in jail) and get me back to the free world.

Anyone here besides me notice that Indonesian authorities are very good at finding tourists with small quantities of drugs but cannot find terrorists with kilos of explosives?

Is it just me or does the "mugshot" look to be of a woman with Asian origins?

Jay: very prescient observation. I have to wonder if the conversion was a cover for being a drug mule.

Oh, she's obviously lying through her teeth about everything. The Muslim bit, and now that she's some poor little drug addict who is in need of help, boo hoo hoo. She's a party girl, out having fun, needing a few eckies to get her really in the party! party! party! mood. But ooops, she got caught. By Indon cops who spend more time harrassing tourists for drugs, than they do stopping jihadis from slaughtering tourists.

But hey, if it works, why not try whatever gets you out of that corrupt country that shows obvious prejudice against anyone not Muslim.

Pictures of her in that article don't show her modelling nothing but body paint. I doubt a good little Muslimah would be caught dead doing that. Or else, she'd be literally dead. Although I don't know at whose hands. Her boyfriend's not Muslim. Neither are her parents, it seems. Just her business manager (female) seems to be Muslim.

It's definitely a tactic, a strategy. I have to admit, I'd probably try it myself. Their jails are supposed to be literal hellholes.

Yeah, I've heard ectasy can be used in place of vitamins, aspirin, midol, insulin, you know, ritalin etc. I'm currently using for an acne medication. WTF, it doesn't work but who cares?

The stupidity and arrogance of these women is astonishing! Who in their right mind, and in Bali, takes ectasy? Hewwww, sounds like a bad trip to me. Don't think she's going to get an Oscar for her performance though -- nice try.

Hope she likes black.

I know. How stupid can you be? After the whole Shapelle Corby drama, on tv day after day, knowing how every Asian country deals with people caught with drugs, and this twit can't have fun without drugs. I don't know whether its stupidity or arrogance. You're in Bali, a lovely place, you're on holidays, isn't that enough? No, you can't enjoy yourself without getting high. How pathetic.

Trouble is, there are probably hundreds of young tourists in Bali doing the same right now, and will continue to be. They just won't learn. And when they get caught, you get the whingers condemning the government for not saving them.
