Cartoons of Mohammed cause death threat

The cartoon jihad in Denmark is escalating. Now the Jamaat-e-Islami party in Pakistan (which was founded by Maulana Maududi, whose jihadist theory I discuss in Onward Muslim Soldiers) is offering a reward to anyone who kills any of the artists.

So far the Danish authorities have reacted well, emphasizing that freedom of speech prevails in Denmark. And certainly it is true that Christians and other religious groups endure lampoon and attack all over the Western world without resorting to threats and violence.

Now this story has become really interesting, since it has become internationalized a la the Rushdie affair. It bears following even though the Pakistani ambassador in Denmark has distanced itself from the threats. From DR Nyheder, with thanks to Filtrat:

The events surrounding the publication of drawings of the prophet Mohammed in the Danish daily newspaper Jyllands-Posten a couple of months ago has taken an even more dramatic turn for the worse.

A large Islamic extremist party in Pakistan has offered a reward of 50,000 kroner to anyone who kills any of the artists.

The Danish ambassador in Islamabad, Bent Wigotski, reports that it is the extremist Jamaaat-e-Islami party and it youth organisation who have offered the bounty money. They have also demanded the ambassador leave Pakistan.

Can you post the cartoons? I've tried going to the original magaizine site and get an error message.

Please post them. My intention is to print them and make collages under the caption:

Why Muslims kill people

Posted by: Tom [TypeKey Profile Page] at December 3, 2005 8:19 AM

The slightest provocation can send muslims into a murderous rage when it comes to anything demeaning, or anything that is desecrating to their religion. They are without any compunction when it comes to their religion. This is why so many are bending over backwards so as not to offend them.

But at what cost do they do this? We see countries, towns, schools , and businesses hiding their religios expressions so as not to offend these people and thus we end up compromising ourselves, our values, our foundations, and our religions so as not to offend them. But a closer look is that it is more out of fear than it is out of offending them. But when it comes to the expression of their religion, they are completely in your face about it; even demanding its practice while in work, or anywhere.

Did you hear about the Jews who threatened to bomb the basilica in Rome because Michelangelo's sculpture of the prophet Moses housed there has horns?

Funny, neither did I.

Tom,

Best not to use cartoons #6 and #12 in your collage.

Posted by: PRCS [TypeKey Profile Page] at December 3, 2005 11:51 AM

I am offended by much that passes as art ---and by much that is said and done against Christianity --- BUT, you won't find me threatening the lives of those offensive miscreants. And I find Muslim arrogance, intolerance toward non-Muslims, and incessant demands for religious accommodation to be offensive and I demand an apology!!!

Posted by: epg [TypeKey Profile Page] at December 3, 2005 12:37 PM

I think #11 is my favorite.

I find everything muslim to be offensive. I demand that they immediately withdraw their religion from the world.

If they dont, I will do something really bad, like...like...pout and frown and stamp my foot. You heard me!

[The Danish ambassador in Islamabad, Bent Wigotski, reports that it is the extremist Jamaaat-e-Islami party and it youth organisation who have offered the bounty money. They have also demanded the ambassador leave Pakistan.]

The people behind the death threats are not the party itself, but some official in the party's youth wing:

The party's leadership distanced themselves from the threats.

"The slightest provocation can send muslims into a murderous rage when it comes to anything demeaning, or anything that is desecrating to their religion. They are without any compunction when it comes to their religion. This is why so many are bending over backwards so as not to offend them."

Fear is only half the reason. The other half is the dominant PC mentality, by which no Problem of Islam exists at all.

For infidels that means:

To allow Moslems to immigrate, to settle, to build mosques and madrassahs in the Dar'al Harb is a big mistake that must be reversed.

The presence of Moslems makes the life of the infidels very unpleasant, dangerous, uninteresting and expensive.
(You've heard this line before?)

Moslem infiltration does not contribute to the economy, but puts enormous pressure on the welfare system. Mohammedans are not an asset but a liability. They do not integrate, they will not assimilate. They want to make us Islamic. Nothing else.

In England and France they seem to succeed.

Islam is a Religion WITHOUT JOY, WITHOUT HUMOUR and WITHOUT TOLERANCE. In other words it has damn
all to recommend it...The Danes are doing absolutely the right thing BY NOT BACKING DOWN DESPITE DEATH THREATS. Our Mantra should be - 'OFFEND MUSLIMS EVERY DAY IN EVERY WAY' so the buggers might 'QUIT OUT SHORES FOR EVERYMORE' - Oh, that would be soooh nice!!

Time for Denmark to deport their Muslim population back to Arabia....

Posted by: abad [TypeKey Profile Page] at December 3, 2005 9:28 PM

Mohammad realized just how damaging ridicule, lampoon, and criticism, could be to his attempts to maintain and increase his circle of believers. There is something about ridicule that is devastating to weak, bad ideas. Many religions have survived quite a bit of criticism and lampooning. Islam, as it is now, probably cannot. This is why intimidation such as death threats, threats of law-suits, cries of Islamophobia and racism, political pressure from Islamic countries, etc., are used to protect Islam. It cannot stand on its own merits. Quoting the Islamic texts doesn't work for the Islamists because the quotations would only confirm the reasons for the ridicule and criticism.

More cartoons, more criticism...why should we let up? Look what the Koran says about us!

I wish that every time someone issued a death fatwa against a Rushdie, or Van Gogh, or the Danish newspaper artists, we could legally collect money and hire mercenaries to go and blow up the fatwa issuer's house, after giving a 5 minute warning. If he didn't withdraw the fatwa after that, we could have the mercenaries hunt him down and kill him. I would chip in, if only it were legal. These death fatwas have put a chill on free speech in our societies (though not on the internet), and must be met with a powerful deterrent response of some sort.

We need a comic book 3-D art website irreverantly but fairly and accurately portraying Muhammed's life.
