A refreshing bit of anti-dhimmitude from José Manuel Barroso. Of course, he still repeats the tired cant about the vast majority of European Muslims accepting Western values, which has never been definitively established, but at least he is admitting that Europe's values are being challenged. And indeed, they already seem to be giving way. From the New York Times, with thanks to Abigail:
STRASBOURG, France, Feb. 15 — In the face of escalating attacks against foreigners in the Muslim world by violent critics of cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad, the European Union's chief executive said today that Europe had to fight for its core European values, including freedom of speech."We have to stick very much to these values," said José Manuel Barroso, the president of the European Commission. "If not, we are accepting fear in this society."
Referring to his youth during a totalitarian regime in Portugal, Mr. Barroso, a former Portuguese prime minister, said in an interview that Europe had to defend its right to have in place a system that allowed the publication of the cartoons.
"I understand that it offended many people in the Muslim world, but is it better to have a system where some excesses are allowed or be in some countries where they don't even have the right to say this?" Mr. Barroso said. "This reminds me of my own country up to 1974. I defend the democratic system."
He said European society was based on principles that included equality of rights between men and women, freedom of speech and a clear distinction between politics and religion.
Mr. Barroso has faced criticism that he has not done enough to support Denmark, a member of the European Union, after threats and attacks over the cartoons, first published in a Danish newspaper.
But in the interview, he expressed solidarity with the Danish people and said, "What is not right is to put the blame on a single people or say the people of Denmark have to be blamed."
In order to avoid a clash of civilizations in Europe and help integration, Mr. Barroso said, European leaders have to be careful to make a "clear distinction" between nondemocratic Muslims in Europe and those who believe in European values, which "are the vast majority of Muslims," and to reach out to those.
"Islam is part of Europe," he said. "We have a very important Islamic heritage."
Yes, of being invaded, conquered and subjugated. A very important Islamic heritage in Europe.

Yes, Europe is under seige, and it is the fault of Europe's governments themselves, which have propounded self-destuctive, meretricious policies, acting in concert under the EU umbrella. More than thirty years of collusion and capitulation to Arab/Muslim demands (with France as the leading culprit, spearheading all of this in response to the 1973 oil embargo) has resulted in the arrival and cosseting of millions of Muslims hostile to Western civilization. With the new arrivals outpopulating the native Europeans, Muslims will comprise the majority by the beginning of the next century. So now what, Europe? Nice going, EU. All of you readers please, please, read Eurabia by Bat Ye'or to more fully understand the dynamics and the historical background of what is unquestionably a catastrophe. Frankly, I despair.

Every concession made to the Muhhammadan minority will only whet their appetite for more demands. Wake up, Europe.

There's more than European Values under Seige here...Only time these Euro Wankers come out of the Woodwork is because of public pressure and that their Overpaid Jobs might be at risk. What democratic Muslims is he talking about? Muslim Leaders have told us in no uncertain terms : ISLAM IS INCOMPATIBLE WITH WESTERN VALUES AND DEMOCRACY. Guess Mr Barroso & his cronies meed it
spelt out in more bombings,death threats,beheadings,car burnings,church burnings,flag burnings,McDonald's burnings etc.
Perhaps when half of Europe's buildings are aflame, these twits who are supposed to be our leaders will get it...

"Guess Mr Barroso & his cronies"
Barroso's "croonies" were Bush, Blair and Aznar - at least at the Azores conference, remember? And trust me, that costed him a great deal of popularity at home, and eyt he did what he thought to be the right thing to do.
If you ask me, I thought that at the Azores conference he looked ridiculous - like some sort of butler, welcoming the VIP guests - but in the end the truth is that there were ONLY three European PMs supporting Bush and he was one of them.
I helped to elect Barroso and I do not forgive him for having accepted the presidency of the European Commission - thus abandoning his own country to political instability - but one thing he has is consistency in his foreign affairs views. He is and has always been a stern pro-American and a stern defender of a REAL Euro-American Atlantic alliance.
This man is not a leftist or even a centre-left: he is between centre-right and the right. Do not try to make a liberal out of him because that is one thing he is not!

European values at at stake because the Europeans who cherish those values are themselves under seige by an enemy who wants to subjugate, enslave or kill them. Their values will die with them if they don't get serious about learning how to win this war, pronto. Think 1938.

All of this "Islam is part of Europe. We have a very important Islamic heritage" crap reminds me of the rote phrase "Heil Hitler" forced on the German military in the 1930's.
If the officer corps in pre-Nazi Deutschland had resisted this kind of slow subversion of their basic sense of decency, we might have been spared the 12 years of blood-soaked lunacy called "The 1000 Year Reich".
Islam is as much a part of Europe as a melanoma is part of a sunbather.
The Alhambra can be crated up and shipped to Mecca tomorrow if that'll put an end to this b.s. about an "important Islamic heritage" in Europe.
I like Dutch and Italian tile work far better.
The hands were free and the joy is evident.
Islamic craftsmanship all too often seems like the theory without the humanity.

My kindest heart does NOT recoil at war with these fascists! I will not kiss their effing flag -- and nobody who lived in a pretty how town would be wise to try and make me... nor would anybody who did not!

In case some missed the point of the poem by ee, he was talking about the bombing of Pearl Harbor. Manhattan’s Sixth Avenue Elevated Line, made redundant when the Sixth Avenue Subway was opened beneath it in 1936, was demolished that year, and its structural steel was sold as scrap iron to Japan where it was turned into munitions that were used against the United States.

And I meant the "el's cousin" was the WTC's, of course.
