The ordeal of Abdul Rahman of Afghanistan is shared by many converts from Islam and poses the problem of Islam’s systematic violation of human rights. If Sharia kills a man who changes religion, it is to be condemned and cannot be the principle inspiring law, in that it destroys any ideal of coexistence and contradicts the UN declaration on human rights, approved in 1948 by almost all Muslim countries.Rome (AsiaNews) – Abdul Rahman, the Afghan who converted from Islam to Christianity, was released from prison with a juridical ploy: deemed to be mentally unfit and thus incapable of undergoing trial, he was able to avoid the death penalty foreseen by sharia in the case of apostasy. But his ordeal is just one case in tens of thousands each year. In Egypt alone there are at least 10,000 Muslims who convert to Christianity each year. At the same time, there are at least 12,000 Christians who become Muslim.
This phenomenon of conversions from Christianity to Islam is rampant throughout the Middle East and in the world. Fundamentalist violence that currently characterizes the Muslim world brings many to ask themselves: can such a violent religion truly come from God? But what is the lot of former Muslims? That of having to flee, hide, emigrate.
A friend of mine who wanted to be baptized was forced to flee from his university friends because one day they found a pocket-sized Gospel in his room. They began to threaten him with death and he fled, abandoning his university studies.
The solution found in Afghanistan is the best one, but is a compromise. It must serve to lead us to a radical question: what takes precedence in Islam? Internationally recognized human rights or Islamic sharia? And if sharia runs counters to human rights, is it not time that the international community condemns it? And if sharia is inscribed – as fundamentalists maintain – in the Koran, there are two things to consider: either the Koran denies human rights, or it must be reread to purge it of false and violent incrustations.

Hope Mr. Abdul Rehman will be a forerunner to many more Muslims, who want to convert to Christianity,but are afraid to do so,due to the Shariya law of killing those who reject Islam.
In our Western countries, how these Muslims beat their chests and proclaim that Islam is fastest growing in the West,due to so many non-Muslims people converting .But when it comes to the other way around,they say they will kill any apostate.
Similarly,Muslim Men can entice our girls and they can marry them ,and convert them to Islam. But, a Christian cannot marry a Muslim girl. If it happens,they will kill that man(unless he accepts to convert to Islam).It is a dangerous situation to our young innocent girls in schools and coleges,where they are unaware of these death-traps in Islam,and fall for any Muslim. Once they convert,there is no reverting back.
Parents of non=Muslims must be very careful in the affairs of their daughters.

Yes indeed it is. It's almost as if there are only two religions, and there is a revolving door between them...with lots of people revolving.
How can anyone in their right mind, believe that Jesus was the son of God and the Messiah, and suddenly replace that with the Islamic version that makes Jesus an important Prophet, but not the Son of God or messiah, and, he is behind Mohammad in stature and importance. On the otherhand, how can anyone abandon Allah and the perfect man and last prophet, Mohammad, and replace him with Jesus? There is a song named for that 'Slip slidin around'. Converts have unstable mentalities. Thats who goes through the revolving doors of the prison system, mental institutions and religions. Cant make up their minds, fleeing from one religion or another. Sometimes trying exotic stuff like magick or witchcraft, Satan worship ect...always seeking stability but never finding it.
Some people do find stability in their religion, or a long prison sentence, but they are not who I am refering to. The unstable convert is known to the terrorist masters, and they know how to exploit that for jihad...

It is interesting that the article shows that 10000 convert from islam and 12000 to islam.
The muslims (as sofia pointed out) beat their chests and shout about islam is the fastest growing religion.
What interests me is that EVEN THOUGH they are threatened with death muslims still convert. I wonder how many are not counted because of fear of admitting conversion from islam. Also, how many more would convert if they were not told they would die for doing so.
Doesn't strike me as the fastest growing religion when you look below the surface.

They need a slogan. Someething like:
Islam- once you join, it'll kill you to leave.
