Maybe this is a clue as to why the Qur'an must not be stocked below the top shelf at Borders?

terms and conditions.
let me see, korans on top shelf, no salman rushdie books, no books on anti islam or anti koran or anti muhammed. no books on jews and isreal unless it's about holocoust denial. seems the capitalists are determined to sell our freedoms for a few tokens of gold.

Doubt that this could be the reason. They just don't want trouble. No one wants trouble. But trouble is what they are going to get, for in these acts of appeasement, they have caused some people to decide never to darken their Borders doors again. Not enough, however, to take your custom elsewhere. You must inform them of why you are doing so -- so that they know. And so that other book chains or bookstores know.
It is a question of numbers. Are there more Muslims who will be angry, one way, or more non-Muslims who will be angry, the other way. That's it. That's the only calculation. Forget about appeasement, morality, that kind of thing. Numbers.

And I am starting to get angry.

They used the money we gave them for oil to buy FOX, and now they're buying Borders...and then they'll buy Barnes And Nobles, and then they'll buy Amazon.com, and then they'll buy the rest of FOX, and then CNN, and then they'll buy AOL, Time Warner, and Microsoft... and then they'll buy our ports, then our airports, then our military contracts, and then our farms and privatized prisons, and then they'll buy all the sports teams and private colleges...and then they'll buy our insurance companies and banks, and then they'll buy Clear Channel Communication, and then....
AND THEN...maybe we'll find a way to get by without Saudi oil.
But only then. And, Mother Mary and Joseph, don't buy any from Chavez, he doesn't hate Castro.

Perhaps they should look ahead to the near future and change their name to Bloody Borders.

KJ happens to be right on the issue with Chavez. He may not be perfect, but he's a hell of alot better than dealing with these Muslim oil trolls like the Saudis who spend millions to promote the Islamic scourge around the world.
First, though, we must find a politician with the ambition to not hold hands with and kiss the cheeks of the Saudis.
I'd rather deal with Chavez than the Middle Easterners any day.

Are Barnes & Noble and Amazon nothing to do with Borders? Just need to know where it's ok to shop.

Not quite. The "fair value" of a probabilistic event is calculated by multiplying the chance of an event times the cost of the event.
So, the numbers would give us the probability of a group, Muslim or infidel, to become angry. But the second part of the equation is the cost. If the infidels become angry, worst case is a few polite people sipping coffee and holding picket signs here and there. If the Muslims become angry, well, the cartoon jihad gives us some idea of their reaction. Since corporations are all about risk avoidance, even if the numbers of infidel vs. Muslim were equal, they would still be obligated to back the Muslims.

They just better not touch real news organizations like TheOnion.com.

Just finished a mischieveous test to this theory at a local Barnes and Noble.
Test one:
Five Qur'ans (oh so politely wrapped in moisture and dent proof wrappings) were placed two shelves below their original top shelf.
Three days later they were back on the top shelf.
Test two:
Turned the same Qur'ans upside down.
Two days later they were right side up again.
Test three (done at same time as test two):
Flipped several King James Bibles back cover - out.
Two days later (same observation time as test two)
The King James versions were by and large untouched.
I'm pissed off enough by this that I almost want to put a sticker on each Qur'an saying "Lovingly rubbed in thick cut bacon for your reading pleasure!"

Here's a little something you can slip into the Corans. Its something we do quite regularly over in France.
I am modifying from the original French, but you should get the idea
This is the text:
Addendum
Following recent California State Legislature, the text of the Holy Qu'ran is being revised by the Council of American Islamic Relations, to take into account the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (1948). Whilst waiting the definitive version approved by the State Supreme Court, the following verses will no apply within the state of California
2:191 Kill the infidels wherever you find them
4:089 Do not make friends with the infidels
etc etc
The 164 verses which preach endless genocidal war against infidels until the world has submitted to Islam, have since been replaced verses more in line with the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. C.A.I.R. hopes that you will enjoy the updated version.
The above clearly needs to be rewritten to reflect local flavour, but I'm sure you get the idea.
For those interested, here is the French version
Addendum

The fruits of apeasement are first more apeasement and inevitably violence as the bully knows he can get away with it. In historical time, we learned that from our experience with the Nazis, but, over many centuries, untold cultures on Islam's bloody borders learned that painful lesson.

Quantum Infidel,
You've correctly gauged the slamic dhimmitude through simple tests that any kufir can do at their local book store. May others follow your lead.
Take care,
BC

Hmmm - makes me tempted to grab a bunch of Qur'ans the next time I am at borders and put them on the botton shelf with a note.
Maybe you can join in as well!!!

Just visited Borders Books and Music all the Korans, 32 of them were on the Top Shelf marked Korans. I moved the Korans to the Bottom shelve and put the 5 copies of Robert Specer's P.I.G. to Islam on the Top shelf cover facing out. Next to one Koran. Bottom Korans are now next to the Jewish Scriptures. I feel wonderful now.

"I feel wonderful now"
It's great isn't it? If one in every 10 infidel did little acts like this. The problem would be over very quickly.
Give them every chance to make fools of themselves
