Baku Says Cemetery Still Intact

Update on our earlier report that this precious Medieval cemetary had vanished from AP:

BAKU, Azerbaijan -- An aide to Azerbaijan's president on Tuesday denied a report that a centuries-old ethnic Armenian cemetery had been destroyed.

The report by the Institute for War and Peace Reporting said the medieval Djulfa cemetery in the exclave of Nakhichevan, which once included thousands of intricately carved crosses, had vanished. The report said its journalist was not allowed by accompanying security forces to go to the cemetery site, but that the journalist was near enough to see the cemetery was gone.

"This is an absolutely lying publication and statement," said Ali Khasanov, an aide to President Ilham Aliyev. "Not one cultural-historical monument, not one Armenian cemetery in the autonomous Nakhichevan republic has been destroyed."

Accusations that Azerbaijan had destroyed the cemetery have raised tensions between Azerbaijan and Armenia, which are at odds over Nagorno-Karabakh, an enclave in Azerbaijan that has been under control of Armenian and local Karabakh forces since a separatist war ended with a shaky cease-fire in 1994. The Djulfa cemetery site is generally off-limits because it lies in a security zone along the Iranian border...

I'd feel much better if this report had included some time-stamped pictures of the cemetery showing it to be untouched as claimed.

Why do I not believe the government. Could it be because muslims are known to destroy everything from other cultures that they can get their hands on?

They wouldn't take him there because it would prove it was gone. Such a shame.

This is one of the many proofs of the irresponsible cult of islam.

"Not one cultural-historical monument, not one Armenian cemetery in the autonomous Nakhichevan republic has been destroyed."

He is right.
Not one, not two, not three, but hundreds of tombstones, several cemeteries, numerous memorials have been destroyed.

I wonder how he gets his nose through the door it must be so long.

I agree. Images have been released showing the alleged destruction. Until there is photographic proof that the previous images were false how can this be taken seriously. It wouldn't be hard to prove that the cemetary is intact if it were.

Granny,
Your explanation (not "one", but rather hundreds...) may be correct.

Another alternative is:

My recollection from reading around a little on this is that from the (self justifying) point of view of the Azeris, the cemetery is not Armenian, but rather Caucasian-Albanian. Such a revision of history then easily allows a nominally "true" assertion that "not one Armenian cemetery" has been destroyed, even if there has been destruction...

at least 1,587 mosques and 23 madrassas had been destroyed in what was once the Muslim-governed Yerevan Khanate - now part of Armenia. In the Zangezur and Echmiadzin areas alone, more than 830 mosques have been demolished, it said, adding that more than 500 Muslim cemeteries have been destroyed within the territory of Armenia.

Unfortunately, the Azeris have the full support of the United States and NATO in whatever actions they take. The US is trying to undercut any possiblity of a Russian economic recovery and has supported Russia's enemies in every case, including the Azeris and the Chechen terrorists.

Because of this, Russia has been backed into a corner, having to seek allies in China and Iran. The same is true for Armenia. Iran has supported the Christian Armenians in Nagorno-Karabakh even though the Azeris are fellow Shi'ite Muslims. This is one of the few cases where realpolitik has triumphed over religious fanaticism.

Armenia, with the support of Russia, ought to be sending planes over the area and do a photo-survey of the ground to see all that has been destroyed. Then show the world that Azeri lies cannot be told with impunity.

More proof of my contention that the American Establishment is pro-Islamic
