Clash of Civilizations Update from Germany: "Ban On Headscarves For Teachers Widens," from UPI, with thanks to Sugiero:
BERLIN, June 1, 2006 (UPI) -- Legislators in Germany's largest state have voted to ban Muslim teachers from wearing headscarves at work. The regional parliament of North-Rhine Westphalia approved the ban on Wednesday, Deutsche Welle reported. Half of the country's states now have headscarf bans.
Muslims are the third-largest religious group in Germany after Protestants and Catholics. Critics of headscarf bans say the policies can make it almost impossible for Muslim women to become teachers -- and are unfair because they single out Islam.

I'm sure the Muslim teachers in Germany are going to be livid when they see the Christian and atheist teachers parading around in headscarfs when they can't wear them because they are Muslims.

That's a start, now how about banning the owners of those headscarves too?

Germany is paying the price for a mindless immigration policy that failed to integrate and assimilate migrants who now pose a very serious threat to their society.

Christianity had head cover aspects back in its heyday, many european women wore headscarfs, just half a century back. Oh but muslims want to make out its all about them!

Won't do.

On the face of it, I don't like this ruling. After all, some Catholic nuns and all Orthodox nuns wear veils. I used to live near a large Amish community, where the women all wore long dresses and bonnets when in public. The Muslim headscarf, unfortunately, has been used not so much as a gesture of modesty, but as a political statement. The Muslim scarf, in many countries, is also forced on Muslim and non-Muslim women alike, making it not a personal symbol of piety that a woman chooses but a show of force by the ruling Muslim clerics. Given all of the problems that Germany has with Muslims, the ban is probably the right decision. It might also help more independent Muslim women in Germany take off their headscarves, saying, "The Devil (the infidel Germans) made me do it."

Exactly that. I was sitting in a large shopping mall over the school holiday, having a cup of tea and a Krispy creme doughnut (maple ring, dear but delicious) when I saw a young woman coming towards me. Her hibaj was tied firmly about her head and neck. The long skirt looked very modest.
But the bare belly and midriff that wobbled above the fancy hipster belt, and the chap she was snogging rather spoiled the modest effect.

Rather than mindlessly parroting something out of Eurabia about who is to blame for the current situation, I am going to applaud the Germans on going the right direction.
Don't write off the Europeans yet. The Eurocrats are already feeling the wrath of the man on the street.

Totally agree on the headscarf ban. One of the French legislators of their successful ban called the wearing of them a "threat" or" provocation" some such term. ( which it is- a thinly veiled threat -pun intended )
Then there is the reason of denoting female subserviance ( not acknowledged by the usually shrill feminists )
Thirdly there is the factor of denoting religous differences in a secular society , already against the law in Germany. So many reasons to get rid of the " burka "in all its many forms ( hijab etc )
by the way, any posters know if the Berlin world cup knifer was a Mohammedan ? or offspring thereof ,natuaralised non-German.

would muslim women be allowed to wear catholic nun's wimples, then?
do you think that would benefit integration efforts, or not?

jehana,
Catholic nuns can be forced by the muslims to wear the hijab, I'm sure, but there is no way that the muslim woman would be allowed by their mullahs to wear a nun's wimples - no way!

Being German born and based, I have commented on the headscarf ban in my blog. Maybe it is worth reading for the regulars here. I am not as optimistic as your headline "Germany: Ban On Headscarves For Teachers Widens" might suggest.
Islamists are counting on converts I
This is interesting (and frightening) as well:
Islamists are counting on converts II

"...the policies can make it almost impossible for Muslim women to become teachers -- and are unfair because they single out Islam"
Because of a head scarf? What an insult to our collective inteligence. Muslims wouldn't stop at head scarves.
Problem with Muslim culture is that they'll push for more and more and more "freedoms" until their last request is to take all other freedoms away from everyone in the form of shariah law. Could take centuries but with a little preserverence (head scarves here, a little amputation there, some stoning on the side).
Seems the Germans are acting on an old addage "give them an inch and they'll take a mile". Bravo Germany, stopping with head scarves is a good start.

The Islamic headscarf is indicative of the oppression and subjugation which many Islamic women endure –
Most of the Islamic people in Germany are of Turkish descent. In Turkey today, the headscarf is banned in all state schools and government offices. By wearing the headscarf, these women are attempting to advertise their Islamic ideals to vulnerable young women, in state run schools. Muslim women generally accept their belittled and oppressed status, as being necessary in the submission to their God and Prophet. We don’t.
Abuse plagues Muslim women in Germany
Traditional attitudes linger, leading to forced marriages and violence

" After all, some Catholic nuns and all Orthodox nuns wear veils"
True, but I haven't seen nuns blowing themselves up lately.
Moreover, nuns *volunteer* to take the veil. It's not forced on all Catholic and Orthodox women.
