Turkey not ready to join the EU, says cardinal

More evidence that the Vatican is awakening to the realities of the contemporary global situation. And of course, Cardinal Kasper is absolutely right. From the EU Observer, with thanks to all who sent this in:

"It is not the right moment for Turkey to join the European Union", cardinal Walter Kasper, head of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity said after another catholic priest was attacked in Turkey over the weekend.

On Sunday (2 July) 74-year-old French priest Pierre Brunissen was stabbed, suspectedly by a mentally unbalanced man in the Black Sea port of Samsun. The priest left hospital on Monday and Turkish police have detained a 47-year-old suspect.

But Pierre Brunissen was the third catholic priest attacked or harassed in Turkey since February and the latest attack prompted strong reactions from the catholic church.

"Islamic fundamentalism is growing in Istanbul and there is hostility towards foreigners," cardinal Walter Kasper, head of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity, told Italian daily Corriere della Sera.

"It is not the right moment for Turkey to join the European Union. What is still missing [in Turkey], is a secular state capable of assuring real religious freedom, and this is a long process which needs time."

No what is missing is the millions of people that were murdered and butchered in the name of Islam. Their crime being of another religion. Until Turkey makes an attempt to make amends it should be considered a rogue nation.

They need to accept responsibility for the Armenian genocide.

By "mentally unbalanced" does the EU Observer mean "muslim"?

What are the chances that Turkey will be included into the EU, in the next ten years? Is USA still pushing that idea? If they are still encouraging that then maybe EU should encourage USA include central america as states too.

Oh no now i fear the wrath of the Texican!

Morning tea time in Sydney.. anyone care for some English breakfast?

Since Turkey is not part of Europe, and never has been, where did this massive delusion come from to attach it, unnaturally, to something it is alien to, in every sense?

The demographic Turkish flood, waiting to mooch on the well-to-do infidel dogs in the richer parts of the EU, makes "sense" from the Muslim side.

But what would Europe gain?

Free taffy?

A mess of pottage?

Only 3% of Turkey falls within Europe, albeit including their #1 city Istanbul. But that doesn't make Turkey an European country - to claim that it is is fraudulent. Anatolia is very much a part of Asia. And I doubt that a majority of Turks live in the European part of the country.

To an extent, I'm even hesitant to call Russia an European, rather than an Eurasian country, but at least, culturally, it's more European than Asian. That's not the case with Turkey - historically and culturally, they had more in common with Turks from Turkestan, Afghans, Arabs and dare I say Iranians.

I rarely support Europe against the US, but in this case, if it's the US behind this pressure, this would be one instance where the EU would be justified in giving Rice the middle fingered salute.

Turkey is NOT a European country.

As if that alone wasn't a valid enough reason to keep Turkey out of the EU, they are muslim.

That's an even MORE valid reason to keep them out of the EU!
How can they even CONSIDER Turkey as a European country, worthy of joining the Union?

Western Europe made a huge mistake by allowing Turkish (kurdish?) guest workers in here starting about 50 years ago!!! The guest workers rarely went home! Now we have 3rd an 4th generation Turks who only know Turkey as a vacation land, but who still are loyal to the traditions of their islamic roots. Some barely speak German and cause nothing but trouble in our inner cities!
Example: The Rütli school in Berlin.

Personally, I think a lot of Germans are getting sick and tired of seeing parallel muslim societies, but whether they will ever have the courage to strongly go against the PC disease in this country is another matter!

No one could even conceive of the idea that mass deportations of those already living here would ever be a possibility.

It's not a question of when Turkey will be ready for Western Europe, but when Western Europe will be ready for Turkey.

My guess is that will be the case about 25 years from now, in light of the current Moslem vs. European breed rate differentials in the EU nations.

Wise words, the french and german societies are very clear in this, Turkey isn´t Europe. Benedict XVI, Kasper, and many french people have said this clearly. But the politics who enjoy bothering to the people think that Europeans want Turkey Europe. And this is false. I hope that US see this too but I am more pessimistic.
