Sharia Alert and Jihad Chic Update from the Guardian:
They are unlikely to grace any catwalk or adorn the figures of supermodels, but the latest in Islamic fashions got top billing from Iran's religious authorities yesterday in an exhibition aimed at promoting female modesty and countering the influence of western clothing.
Tehran's Imam Khomeini mosque hosted the country's first Islamic dress fair, in which ankle-length manteaus, or overcoats, and all-covering black chadors supplanted the sexually daring styles favoured by European designers. The 10-day event is being organised by Iran's police force along with the commerce ministry and the state broadcasting corporation, IRIB, to promote the idea of women dressing stylishly in line with the values in the Qur'an.
Hundreds of women, most wearing chadors or other forms of conservative dress, browsed an array of outfits, many of which appeared strikingly uniform in their dark colouring and full length. But representatives from the Tehran-based Superior Hijab Production Company modelled a blue chador that departed from tradition by coming with sleeves - solving an age-old practical problem.
Now there's progress.
The sales pitch was reinforced by a fringe exhibition of quotes extolling the virtue of Islamic hijab. One, from the prophet Muhammad, read: "Any woman with faith in Allah and the resurrection day won't expose her adornments to any man except her husband. Any woman who does these things for other than her husband has betrayed her faith and provoked God's anger."
[...]
But some young women were less impressed. "The designs here are not appropriate for the youth or people of my age," said Shakoofeh, 19, a student. "I came along out of curiosity to see what the authorities think we should wear. I would not wear hijab at all if it wasn't the law."

I knew they wouldn't wear them unless it was mandatory. I guess adornments is a woman's elbows, knees, ankles, wrists......
These muslim males have a huge problem. They need intense therapy.
A fashion show of tents. How fun.

Let's hope things work out better than they did for the Miss World contest in Nigeria a few years ago. Riots and murders followed when a journalist suggested Mohammed might have wanted to marry one of the contestants.
Of course he was wrong to suggest that...the contest was for young women and not 6 year old girls.

A little OT, but check out the "Vows" (highlighted couple of the week) of the weekend wedding-section in today's NYTimes:
http://www.nytimes.com/2006/07/09/fashion/09vows.html
The oh-so-modern and professional Muslim couple, who just didn't want anything to do with an arranged marriage, yet went with Islamic tradition all the way on the business end of things. And check out the photos.
(The crack about "wedding receptions...[being]among the few places where Pakistani boys and girls can freely mingle, unchaperoned" was particulary good.)
What was it Hugh was saying about the main thrust to spread Da'wa is not jihad?

First Afghanistan, then Iran...
One of the few non-lethal things (on the "face" of it) to come out of dar-ul-Islam

While shopping in a drug store yesterday, a tall woman completely wrapped in headscarf, robe, etc., walked past me, followed by her little boy of four or so who was dressed normally. It was 100F before noon. The islamic need to advertise their fixations and to draw attention to themselves reminds me of the equally pathetic souls who wear pink Mohawk hairstyles and run safety pins through their noses. One doesn't know whether to laugh or to offer the phone number for county mental health's offices.

It's one thing to wear garbage bags by choice, another matter to wear them or be butchered.

Too funny...
Actually, I have been out shopping for the Misses...had the idea of getting her a burka in teal...surprise her you see...anniversary coming up...but all they had were limited to the range of primary colours...alls the pity...apparently teal is not Islamic...go figure...

I used to wonder; How could a Muslim woman wear such de-humanizing clothing as a burka, but now I see the reason is better understood by looking at the Muslim man.
A Muslim man apparently has no control over his sexual urges, and if he sees a woman's elbow, or hair, his unchecked testosterone will give him no choice but to rape the offending whore. The rapist is the victim in the warped world of Islamic fundamentalism, so Muslim women must protect themselves from these beasts by completely hiding their identity behind "halloween costumes" AKA burkas.
Pathetic...truly pathetic, no matter how you analyse this.

I can't believe it's a ten day event to show what they've been wearing for centuries. How very exciting!

........
In a manner of speaking. Betty Mahmoodi, the American woman who was stuck in Iran during the late '70's wrote about this weird aspect of the chador in her book "Not without my Daughter". The chador gaps, and does not have buttons, snaps or a zipper--in fact, it was illegal to use pins or anything like that to keep them closed. So a woman, even one keeping track of several small children or carrying heavy shopping bags had to keep one hand free at all times to hold her chador closed.
Letting it accidently gap could mean you get beaten by the relious police or attacked by a man (for dressing immodestly). I guess anytihing that makes life more inconvienient and more humiliating for women is considered a good thing.

Of course, a woman in full burqua only draws attention to herself in a Western country--not in a place where all women must dress like this, by custom or law. As far as the comparison with dressing punk goes--no one is required to dress punk (or preppie, or goth, or any other style). Also, for most people, dressing punk is a phase--except for an unfortunate tattoo or so, it is something you can change at any time--grow out your mohawk, re-dye your hair to something approaching its natural color, etc. Not a style change you can make if the penalty for doing so is imprisonment, fine, or even death.
There was another recent thread about a burqua "fashion show" in Afghanistan. One poster asked why we should care what muslims wear--why should it bother us? But there have been reports now not just of moderate muslims in heavily Islamic neighborhoods in European cities feeling compelled to wear hijab for their own protection against roving Muslim gangs, but also *non-Islamic* girls as well. One 17-year-old girl had local thugs try to *set her on fire* because she wasn't wearing hijab. If I remember correctly, this was in Germany.
Very disturbing.

Apparently the police channel their testosterone into violence and merely beat the woman, occasionally breaking a bone or two. Why are they immune to the sultry seductions of the elbow or ankle? ***befuddlement ensues***
The virgins in Islamic heaven probably all wear black burkas.
It matches their eyes, you see.

"his unchecked testosterone will give him no choice but to rape the offending whore"
The truth is slightly grubbier - I've been reliably informed that new arrivals in the west from Muslim societies find that the amount of visual stimulation they receive turns them into chronic bishop bashers ( thay may beat up prelates as well, of course) although the phase passes in time.
