Miss Indonesia under fire over 'insulting' swimsuit parade

svNADINE_narrowweb__300x468,0.jpg
Insulting to Islam

Sharia Alert from modern, moderate Indonesia. From Reuters, with thanks to David:

A MILITANT Islamic group has filed a police report against Indonesia's Miss Universe candidate, accusing her of indecency.

Nadine Chandrawinata's participation in the contest and display of her body in a swimsuit "is actually insulting for Indonesian dignity and women", Islamic Defenders Front lawyer Sugito said yesterday.

Ms Chandrawinata did not make it to the competition's final in Los Angeles on Sunday, which was won by Miss Puerto Rico, but she had drawn heavy media coverage in Indonesia.

Mr Sugito said the Islamic Defenders Front had also filed complaints against four people involved in sponsoring and organising Ms Chandrawinata's participation.

Under Indonesian law, police would have to investigate whether there was sufficient evidence for a case under the complaint, and if so, turn their findings over to prosecutors for a decision on whether it merited going to court.

The offences carried potential sentences ranging from two to six years in jail, Mr Sugito said. The posing requirements of the competition offended the standards not just of Islam but of other religions, he said.

A government decree against participation in beauty contests issued when strongman Suharto was president is still technically in effect in Indonesia, although in practice it has been disregarded since he lost power in 1998.

A beautiful woman, dressed very respectfully. Anyone who thinks otherwise would have to be insane. I hope the indonesian authorities are strong enough not to be bullied into taking action against this person or her proponents.

Marks out of two... I'd give her one.

Maybe she should have donned the "death rags", but would they still have whined? Before they tried to butcher her.

Posted by: moderationist [TypeKey Profile Page] at July 26, 2006 7:47 AM

Same thing happened with Miss Afghanistan last time.

My sympathies to anyone living in this country.

Show me a picture of her in the swimsuit. Then we can decide if it is an insult or not.

Posted by: JanuaryMan [TypeKey Profile Page] at July 26, 2006 9:28 AM

They are going after her for wearing a swimsuit in another part of the world? Is Indonesia a tourist attraction? Like with beaches and resorts where there are swimsuits all over the place? If so, the swimsuits are what supports them. They should shut up.

Nadine is a beautiful woman whose stunning beauty would have never been known to the world if she would have been forced to wear the burqa.

To all the women like Nadine in muslim-dominated countries: you have friends in the United States. We appreciate your beauty.

"A MILITANT Islamic group has filed a police report against Indonesia's Miss Universe candidate, accusing her of indecency."

Looks pretty decent to me.

A beautiful young woman showing her God given beauty with a lovely smile. And these mad mullahs want to imprison them in Burkas.

The riots (multiple deaths) in nigeria were caused when a journalist suggested the islamic prophet mohammed would have liked to marry one of the contestants. Such an outrageous slur on the world's most famous paedophile could not be tolerated so lots of innocent people were murdered.

You said it well, Celsius.

If this woman in a swimsuit is insulting, then I’d like more insults, please!

Seriously, it is quite shameful of her to prance around like that! If there’s anything I can do to help, I’d like to give her my phone number –I’m single and highly impervious to her insulting nature.

In fact, if she deserves punishment for these things, I’ll gladly bend her over my knee and give her a good spanking…

Leftist Feminists, of course, would agree with the militant Muslims in this case.

Posted by: remote_control [TypeKey Profile Page] at July 26, 2006 12:26 PM

Is Nadine a Muslim?

Posted by: Infidel Pride [TypeKey Profile Page] at July 26, 2006 1:27 PM

Infidel--judging by the given name, Miss Indonesia is probably non-Muslim.

BTW, there are parts of Indonesia where nobody under a certain age wears anything at all--something to do with an equatorial climate.

The muslims will have a field day with them!

I'm with MaxInfidel on this issue. I'm willing to sacrifice for world peace. If Miss Indonesia would come over here I'm willing to be insulted by her. Just trying to make some difference in the world.

Jesus, what is wrong with these people? Miss Indonesia appears to be NORMAL, so these ding dongs file police complaints?

From the above photo, she appears to be ALL GIRL...nothing wrong with that...

Posted by: SCV [TypeKey Profile Page] at July 26, 2006 7:05 PM

She is Catholic, says so here. Sounds rather religious as well, but then everyone in Indonesia at least seems rather religious. There has been a big debate about her on my site here.

Posted by: patung [TypeKey Profile Page] at July 26, 2006 10:57 PM

Patung: thanks for the article.

I cut and pasted a quote from the article that I found to be reprehensible.

It gives us some insight to the backwards ways of Muslims in Indonesia.

" FPI lawyer Adnan Assegaf, who accompanied Mujahidah Secretary Noni Supriyanti Budiani, gave the following explanation:

We have reported Nadine Chandrawinata as she has harassed Indonesian women by appearing in vulgar poses at the Miss Universe 2006 contest on behalf of Indonesia. "

Mr. Assegaf believes that Nadine is harassing other Indonesian women by wearing a bikini and making vulgar poses.

Puh leeese!

Uptight Muslims in Indoensia obviously don't have anything better to do with their time. Mocking a beautiful Indoesian woman seems more important to them than criticizing Islamic jihad that supports killing innocent Australian tourists in Bali nightclubs.

Posted by: Johnathan [TypeKey Profile Page] at July 26, 2006 11:23 PM

Given Indonesians' penchant for blowing up nightclubs our suggestion would be to have Indonesia substitute an orangutan in a swimsuit in the place of an Indonesian female contestant in such pageants.

Orangutans do not blow up nightclubs! So I would therefore be inclined to vote for an orangutan over an Indonesian in a beauty contest.

The same applies for any Islamic country.

oooooh! Deary me....

http://www.chinadaily.com.cn/world/2006-07/25/xin_1307032522501761389950.jpg

but those islamists have their priorities soooooo right....

indonesia: child labor , corruption , out of control birth rates....and those are good bits....

but lets all get upset because a very pretty lady is proud of herself.....

yup , great call , islamists.....

Posted by: ewha1 [TypeKey Profile Page] at July 27, 2006 2:33 AM

She's amazingly beautiful.

Now let's wait for a rampaging mob to stone her to death.

Posted by: Jesus Christ Supercop [TypeKey Profile Page] at July 27, 2006 10:08 AM

Well they dont have to watch it if it upsets them . . . do they ?

Posted by: beckyb [TypeKey Profile Page] at July 27, 2006 10:33 AM

So Muslims feel Islam can be insulted. I notice here they did NOT state al-lah was insulted--they said Islam is insulted. I doubt that this is the type of verbal slip it may appear to some to be.

I find it particularly curious that Islam (supposedly a collection of 'religious' ideals and directions)is seen by Muslims as possessing autonomous powers of cognition that would render it capable of being insulted. Exactly WHO or WHAT would be included in the term "Islam" that would make Islam capable of being 'insulted'? Since al-lah wasn't mentioned we can safely assume Muslims don't mean him.

My guess would be all the demons in Hell (including Satan) which comprise the REAL Islam that Muslims don't want us to know about and lie like the real hell in order to conceal from us...

ps-In my humble opinion, voting for write-in monkey candidates in beauty pageants is preferable to voting for Muslim contestants in them.

A fine looking lady; You Go Girl!

Posted by: alexon [TypeKey Profile Page] at July 28, 2006 3:49 PM

"Leftist Feminists, of course, would agree with the militant Muslims in this case. "

A nasty lie. As a feminist I think as follows:

1. She is lovely and I appreciate seeing beautiful people.

2. I wish that women everywhere in the world could dress as they wish, without restriction or harassment.

3. I wish women everywhere had plenty of options for success in all professions and trades, so that beauty pageants were only a freely-chosen option.

4. Regarding any restrictions on the display of the human body, I am concerned about the influence violent pornography can have on actual sexual violence and am therefore opposed to it.

5. Any restrictions on pornography should obviously not punish the victims of it. Jihadis think any display of flesh outside of the hijab should be punished!

Show me one feminist statement that calls for the punishment of beauty queens!

I suppose everyone has a right to do whatever s/he wants as long as it does not harm others. i don't see any harm of her action of joining the miss universe to ensure world peace and dressing up in a swimsuit.
She should be given freedom to promote Indonesia country.
Indonesians should be proud that she can jooin the miss universe to show people how great and intellectual indonesian are.
