Attacks on women soar in Mosul, along with threats over "sacrilegious" clothing

What better motivation for "pious" behavior could there be than the threat of bodily harm? Then again, perhaps that's what being "victorious with terror" is all about. From Al-Jazeera: "Attacks on women soar in Mosul"

A recent spike in attacks on women has forced many in the northern Iraqi city of Mosul to retreat into their homes or resort to armed escort by relatives and tribal guards.

It seems likely that women going out unescorted would also be an issue here.

In recent weeks, Mosul residents have witnessed an unprecedented rise in the number of female corpses found throughout the city.
[...]
The increase in attacks on women has also been accompanied by a proportional increase in threats against clothiers and boutique shop owners, security officials have said.
In the Sarj Khanah district in Mosul, where many western fashion boutiques are located, shop owners have found threatening flyers and messages left on their doors.
One such flyer condemned "sacrilegious" clothing which it claimed corrupted young women with revealing clothes baring their shoulders and knees and called on all mannequins to be covered with proper Islamic garb.
The flyers included verses from the Quran as well as hadith (oral traditions of the Prophet Muhammed) followed by threats and a promise of death.
Abu Faris, a father of four girls and one boy, said he would not take any chances and have his daughters don the head covering veil as soon as they hit 10 years of age.
He said: "Mays, my oldest, is 14 and she has been veiled since she was about 12.
"Women who are not veiled risk attracting attention of some of the killers here."

If I remember correctly, Mosul is in the Assyrian heartland and during time of Saddam still had many Christians. I wonder how many of the victims are Christians or have the Kurds succeeded in expelling all of them.

The headline should read "MUSLIM MALES BARE TEETH AT WOMEN WHO BARE KNEES".

Or, " WOMEN ARE THREATENED BY THREATENED MUSLIM MALES".

Or "MUSLIM MALES ARE THREATENED BY MUSLIM WOMEN".

Or " MUSLIM MALES THREATENED BY CHANGE IN THEIR LEVI'S".

muslim males are pathetic. If I were of childbearing age, and it were up to me and a muslim male left to carry on civilization, I would be the last person left alive.

I like the thought, but it would be impossible to carry on civilization if the male were indeed a Muslim.

Much of the anti-war propagandists' defense of Saddam as a champion of women's rights rests on his willingness to allow women to vote (for him), drive cars, own property, get an education and work. What they choose to ignore, however, is the systematic rapes, torture, beheadings, honor killings, forced fertility programs, and declining literacy rates that also characterized Saddam's regime. A few examples can only begin to illustrate the cruelty and suffering endured by thousands of Iraqi women.
One torture technique favored by Saddam's henchman and his sons involved raping a detainee's mother or sister in front of him until he talked. In Saddam's torture chambers women, when not tortured and raped, spent years in dark jails. If lucky, their suckling children were allowed to be with them. In most cases, however, these children were considered a nuisance to be disposed of; mass graves currently being uncovered contain many corpses of children buried alive with their mothers.

During Saddam's war with Iran, nearly an entire generation of Iraqi men were killed, injured or captured, leaving a dearth of men of military age in Iraqi society. As a result, Saddam launched "fertility campaigns" that forcibly administered fertility drugs to school girls as young as 10 in an effort to drive up the population rate.

After the Gulf War--particularly after crushing the Shiite and Kurdish uprisings of 1991--Saddam reverted to tribal and "Islamic" traditions as a means to consolidate power. Iraqi women paid the heaviest price for his new-found piety. Many women were removed from government jobs and were not allowed to travel without the permission of a male relative. Men were exempted from punishment for "honor" killings--killings carried out on female relatives who had supposedly "shamed" their family. An estimated 4,000 women died from honor killings in the ensuing years. By 2000, Iraqi women, once considered the most highly educated in the Middle East, had literacy levels of only 23%.

Under the pretext of fighting prostitution in 2000, Saddam's Fedayeen forces beheaded 200 women "dissidents" and dumped their head on their families doorsteps for public display. These women obviously lost whatever "rights" granted to them once they got in Saddam's way.

Saddam Hussein was an equal opportunity killer who tortured, raped and gassed men, women and children alike. From Dujail in the South (the murder of hundreds of villagers for which he is on trial now) to the chemical obliteration of Halabja in the North, all Iraqis bore the brunt of the tyrant's wrath

Well, now that you mention it . . .you'll find just such a report online . . .at of all places -

NPR

Iraq Still Manages to Shock

. . . shepherds in the rural western Baghdad neighborhood of Gazalea have recently been murdered, according to locals, for failing to diaper their goats.

You see, strict sharia compliance has made it terribly sexually provactive to leave the goats naked.

"called on all mannequins to be covered with proper Islamic garb."

Now this is beyond insane. But aren't maniquins considered idols to jihadists? Or am I off base on that one?

Saddam, evil, no, he is just the typical traditionalist muslim. He just followed mohammed commands a little more.

What the army should do is to station snipers around the city. If a pervert starts manhandling a woman for her dress or for any other cause, just one bullet would stop it.

What was up with this perv mohamid? Grown women can't walk unescorted, modestly dressed, yet mo can bang a 9 year old child?

"One such flyer condemned 'sacrilegious' clothing which it claimed corrupted young women..."

Better to kill them, than to corrupt them.

My favorite Moslem remembrance is Cronulla and the other beaches in Oz. So, you've got godesses walking around in thongs, bikinis, cutoffs, and who knows what else. Young women so beautiful that it knocks the wind of a man's lungs. Sweethearts, too.

They are the pinnacle of Western civilization.

So, what do the Oz Leb Moslem activists do? They follow the godesses around on the beach sidewalks, angrily denouncing them, kicking gravel on their tanned legs, threatening them with an ass kicking and sometimes even with murder.

Now, is that sick or what. Like any real man, they shoulda been on their hands and knees, panting with toungues hanging out, barking like dogs punctuated with the occassional howl, begging for a belly rub.

Jill Ireland, your silence is deafening. Jeanine Garafollo, you're a pompous ass, but you're stupidity (or ingorance, or cowardice) is defeaning too. How about you, bigmouth know-it-all Rosie? Oprah, got anything on this?

Fed up,
There is a lot of propaganda against Saddam that is simply not true. Remember the young Kuwaiti woman testifying in tears before the US Congress about how she saw the evil Iraqi soldiers throwing Kuwaiti babies out of incubators while looting hospitals. Later, it was revealed that she was an Al-Sabah princess and the daughter of the Kuwaiti ambassador. She hadn't even been in Kuwait in five years.

It's true that Saddam was a typical Middle Eastern dictator who woulfd torture and murder his opponants but for the average Iraqi, he just left them alone. One thing is clear, the situation for women and non-Muslims in Iraq was infinitely better under Saddam and his secular Ba'athists than it is now under the US imposed Islamic Constitution.

I had a feeling that as soon as we started to put pressure on the goons in Baghdad, they would drift out of town and head to Mosul, where two years ago they were running rampant until we squeezed the juice out of them there.

The terrorists succeed in a society like Iraq's because the Iraqis are traumatized by decades of living in fear of the knock on the door in the middle of the night. Theirs is society where threats are not idle. Bad men collect on you when you tell them where to stick it (if you even have the temerity to do that). This is the one thing that most Americans still have a hard time grasping. I remember during the Cold War most Americans still had a hard time believing that life in the Soviet Union and most of its satellites was one of always being afraid. I certainly did. As one who used to be a former Gramscian Marxist I do recall that I thought it was all capitalist propaganda - until I actually met survivors of it and read other accounts of the effect of this kind of terror.

This is why Americans have, among other reasons, have so little understanding of why the mission is taking so long in Iraq. It is very, very easy for Iraqis to be intimidated by these goons. You ignore them at your peril. And since these thugs do not go mano a mano, they will catch you when you least expect it. It is difficult to defend oneself against these kinds of people. Turn your back, and they slip the knife in or they seize you and saw your head off.

Refinement is at the peak of civilization. From the Stone Age it took many generations to reach certain fashions concerning female clothing and make-up.

Islam wants to undo those civilizational achievemnts because Islam is the cry of rage from a desert-dwelling tribe which in the 6th century was barely above the level of the Stone Age.

Now they want to impose their regressive measures on the whole world. A product of their rage and jealousy against civilizations that were more developed than the desert Quraysh (practically all).

provo,

There is a lot of propaganda against bush/usa that is simply not true.

As the above article explained no dictator is a champion of women rights.

How do you explain the fall in literacy rate?

Posted by: FedUp [TypeKey Profile Page] at October 4, 2006 11:08 AM

FedUp, I don't deny that Saddam was a thug. But Saddam cared only about Saddam, not about Allah. That made him far better for non-Muslims and women than the Islamists who are now in charge.
